Apple released iTunes 4.5 today and with it they introduced the apple lossless codec which claims to make lossless versions that are half the size. I will have to play with this tomorrow and see how it works...

finaly. if itunes sells lossless media, i will personaly change my stance and support them. granted, id download it and change it to flac for the sake of ease, since im sure it would be propriatary crap that apple is trying to peddle on us, but regardless of that, its nice to see them taking the right step towards digital distibution.

yeah...i'm interested to see if it is really lossless or not...
i'm going to do some tests with it tonight to see if the md5s on the .wav are the same before and after encoding...
because on the apple site it says "Apple will also include a Lossless Encoder in the new version of iTunes so users can "import CDs into iTunes with sound indistinguishable form the original recording but at half the size."
the word indistinguishable is what gets me

It would be fantastic if they sold in lossless, has that actually been announced yet? I would still put them on my iPod in AAC, but burning the CD as lossless would be very nice.

It does not support .shn or .flac It only supports its own type of lossless files. I don't know all the details, but I want to be able to play shn and flac files on itunes.

it seems that the lossless codes is mp4 doesnt seem to be an audible dif between the lossless and the CD, but i suppose that is the whole point of lossless.
