View Full Version : Dave's voice...will it make it through another summer?

As you may know Dave's voice got pretty tired last summer, especially for the 2nd leg of the tour. My question is, do you think he will be able to make it this summer? I think it kinda sucks when you don't get to hear him sing falsetto/high parts of songs...almost like the song is not complete. Is there anything he can do to stop that from happening?

Yeah, I know what you mean, but I think most people find it taboo to talk about that stuff around here. At the Nashville (Antioch) show of 2002 it seemed he just couldnt put up as much of a punch in the songs as he was before.

Well, I'm just glad I'm getting the opener in St. Louis. He will be pretty rested up you would think. He's had about 5 months of little singing, granted that's not really a lot of time but he knows what he's doing. How many years of touring straight is it now?? 13??

No. I fear it's not strong on the new album. He hasn't had much of a down time and being a smoker hurts too. Trust me in a few years his voice will be shot big time due to constant touring, smoking, and yelling. Enjoy it while we can.

The summer tour is only 66 dates. That's nothing for him. And who really knows how much singing (or just using his voice period) he's been doing lately.

i'll be seein him towards the beginning of july so i'm not too concerned. His voice will be shot by the end though most likely.

I'll be seeing him at the end of aug and I am concerned. last year I saw him on 8-2 and wasn't really aware of it at the time, but he wasn't hitting any of the high notes and his voice did sound tired. I realized it after I did a B&p and got the show.

is there anything that he can do medically that would help him. Obviously he could quit smoking, but are there any procedures that he could have?

If he would stop screaming so much, his voice might last a little longer.

Not really sure if there is a medical procedure, and if there is, there is probably a pretty big risk that he might never be able to sing again. If I was him I would lay off the smokes. I am not sure if he does this, but he could probably get some kind of voice lessons that could allow his voice to last longer.

I kinda like the way his voice is maturing. Listening to some of the early 90's stuff
he sounds like a kid just out of puberty. Now his voice has some of life's wisdom behind it.....................

The general trend of the tour is that Dave's voice is on in the beginning of the tour and he loses it towards the end. The music (the band), however, progressively gets tighter and the jams get better towards the end of the tour. It's a trade off. My thought is that the most solid shows are midway or a little past midway of the tour, but either way you're in for a good show.

I agree. I think his voice finally became perfect on BTCS. Before that it sounded a little weird (I still love it on the older stuff, but it's just not as good as BTCS and later).

whatever happens to his voice I'm sure he'll make the best of it and make it sound good

It'll be about the same as previous tours...by the time he makes it to the Gorge his voice is shot (has happened the last few years '01, '02, '03, and again I'm sure in '04).
Although I think it's sometimes sounds awesome when his voice is gone and he can't hit the high notes so he has to wail them out (see KKJ in '02, unreal version with a shot voice).

I love that KKJ. He is trying so hard, you gotta give it to him. Even when his voice is shot he can still put a certain spin that makes it sound good.

This shouldn't really be a question. Do you honestly believe there's a shot in hell that Dave doesn't know his limits as a musician? If Dave couldn't perform for an extensive amount of time anymore he wouldn't do it. We know his voice has definately gotten worse over time (and it will get worse over the course of a tour), but most musicians do. No worries, he'll be fine and I truly believe he will be for a long time.

I listened to Kit Kat Jam from the Sleep Train show in '03, and it really sounded like shit. He didn't really try to do anything with the high notes that time.

Ray Charles has managed all these years. So shall Dave I'm sure.
On June 30th in TO he will sound brilliant as always.
