crash, deed is done, #41 those are good to start if you have pretty good chops or want a challenge as a beginner try rhyme and reason to help with timing it only has two parts!

also anything you're able to repeatably play won't have you worrying about "memorization" even if it's difficult to learn, because it will become easier with practice and will stick in your head. once you get the hang of something, you'd be surprised how little you think about where your hands are moving, even on a tougher one like tripping billies. memorization is kind of a byproduct of practicing.

if you have what they call rhythm, then you will learn all songs in no time. I first started practicing Typical Situation. The verse is good practice and most chorus parts of Dave's songs are somewhat easy. The chorus in typical is easy and fun to play. Check out www.chordfind.com too.
Enjoy!!!!

Where are you going is a very easy song to play.
Last Stop (reprise) is also easy.
Gravedigger
Grey Street

STJL is pretty easy, only because it's all chords, and not so much a riff that requires stretching. It's a fun one to play.
i like tictacs

I've played bass for almost a year now, and just started guitar also...The first song I learned was crash. It helped that my hands were already used to stretching though, I picked the song up in about 20 minutes, and a month later can sing to it rather nicely. I think.

Gravedigger's got some fast chord changes in the bridge, not something I'd recommend to easily frusterated people. And yes, Billies isn't easy unless you're only playing the intro and the chorus. Where Are You Going takes time to learn fingerpicking, but if you're strumming it's simple.
First songs? Christmas Song, Crash, Grey Street Jane, Big Eyed Fish, Typical, Halloween and DDTW. Those 8 will give you a range of talents from slow, quiet fingerpicking to hard strums, stretches and rhythm. From there, go to #41, OSW, Satellite (slow at first), Say Goodbye, Ants, and LIOG.

use your thumb for every bass note. the strumming part, limit yourself to the last three strings. so its actually: thumb strum strum strum thumb strum strum thumb strum strum strum thumb strum strum thumb strum strum strum thumb strum strum thumb strum strum strum thumb strum strum
note: strum = one strum down followed a strum up
and im sure you know the chorus already
