hey, just started learning how to play guitar..thought it would be fun to have a dave song to work on so its not just all memorizing how to play notes and shit right now...just wondering what the easiest song to play would be

easiest is crash. ddtw is fairly easy as well. satelite is easy once you get a hang of moving your fingers for the intro. but these are all imo...so what do i know

crash is not the easiest, don't start with crash.
Easy to play would be Proudest Monkey and Typical Situation. Next, to work on chord changes try Song That Jane Likes. Grey Street is pretty easy and gets you to learn some common chords that Dave uses.
Start with those. I'm not saying Crash is hard, but it takes quite a stretch and a really good sense of rhythm. So you can use that song to work on stretching out your hand.

song that jane likes is probably one of the easiest, except for the ending if you are a a beginner, and also grey street is easy. Finally, #41 is pretty basic, but you have to have some sense of rhythm and pimpabilitivityness.

#41 has lots of...weird chords/chord changes in them, but it can get easy after practice. when i started i found that crash was very easy, but it's different for everybody. watchtower is kind of easy, four chords(i believe) w/ lots of strumming that can be overwhelming at first, but you get used to it after a while. too much is easy and can be used with lots of improv fills. everyday is also fairly easy, you might have trouble with the ending at first, but you also get used to that. there might be some easier ones that you could do as well, i'm just too lazy to find them...hope this helps...a little

yea, crash is definetly not the easiest song. The bass notes meshing with teh strumming is tough. Halloween is pretty simple, as is AATW. LIOG isnt bad either.

WAYG works too

WAYG and GIG are virtualy the same chords, so they are pretty easy. digging a ditch is easy too.

GIG isn't easy

it just depends on who you are talking to. i've been playing for about 3 1/2 years and i thought it was fairly easy, maybe not to a beginner tho. so, what may be easy to someone who has been playing for a few years may be really hard to someone else, which is why i'm not a really reliable source :monkey

Halloween is not too hard either.
I just started learning how to play guitar myself about a year or so ago, but have not kept up with it as I should have. So I am still basically still a beginner. I found that Proudest Monkey is probably the easiest, as you all say. Some others that I can play right now are: Typical Situation, Loving Wings, Halloween (most of it), Grey Street (most of it), and #41 (learning to play that now, trying to get the rhythm down). :)

if you wanna do the song its proper justice, #41 is not a good one to start on.

And what go you think about Granny or Christmas Song?

granny is fairly tough for a beginner. if you want to sing while playing then it becomes a whole lot tougher.

isn't proudest monkey just 3 notes, because the first note played is just played an octave higher?

no.
yeah, proudest monkey and ddtw are the easiest ones, along with all along the watchtower. i dont know what these people are thinkin when they say 'oh, LIOG is easy for me' noone cares about you, its the guy who is beggining to play thats asking which song is easy. dont get him discouraged by telling him to play LOIG. try..hmmm...loving wings, thats simple, or grey street, as mentioned before. maybe two step might work, because you dont have to do a lot of hand changes, it just stays basically the same throughout most of the song. space between is also really easy, once you get the rhythm of the chorus down. big eyed fish is just simple.
good luck

pig is easy and lover lay down verse is easy but the chorus is hard.

Grey Street is easy, but not for an absolute beginner, cause you do need to use a bar chord. I remember it took me a good couple of months before my bar chords started sounding anything close to what they should sound like. Plus, I think it takes a little getting used to if you play it the way Dave does (using the pinkie and the ring finger). I usually just ride the ring finger on the G string and alternate my middle and pointing fingers on the E string, just 'cause its easier.

Speaking from experience...I taught myself to play guitar using exclusively Dave songs. If I were you, I'd work on these songs, in (approximate) order...
Proudest Monkey
Typical Situation
I'll Back You Up
Halloween
Watchtower
Lover Lay Down
Grey St.
Big Eyed Fish
Two Step
Everyday
Ain't It Funny...
#41
Say Goodbye
Also, a couple of really good skill builders are learning the instrumental intro to One Sweet World (just keep playing it very slow until you know it, and then speed it up)...and also the riff to Minarets.
Anyway, that's my lengthy advice.

I think LIOG was the first or second DMB song that i learned. If you just play it as open chords, Say Goodbye is easy too. Actually, even if you don't it's relatively easy. Crash is slightly more difficult because of the syncopation, but maybe that's just me.
go to www.dmbtabs.com (http://www.dmbtabs.com) and try everone until you will find which one is easy for you.

whoa, canīt believe someone listed satellite in their easiest...iīve been playing for about 2 years and i still canīt touch it. iīd say grey st, bartender, donīt drink the water, typical situation, minarets, hold me down, and proudest monkey are good starters...satellite is real hard, 41 isnīt difficult per se but you need to have good stretchable hands to do that. also, try the chorus or bridge of bowa.
edit: or this beautiful little jam in my sig is pretty easy too
well it all depends on the person. One song that is hard for me, may be easier for another. If you have long fingers most Dave songs are easier to play.
