I am still bumfuzzled every time i see someone throwing down what would be a good down payment for a car on an axe.

For some (including my purchase of the brazilian Taylor), it's an investment. Cars rarely increase in value, whereas guitars rarely decrease in value (assuming you take care of them).
If your car's paid off, why not invest in a nice guitar? You get to play a high end instrument for a while, and then probably make a little money when you sell it. win/win

What a bloody nice taylor. o_o And yeah, it's most always worth it to buy a higher end guitar for resale purposes. Especially Taylors and Martins

are there any other ways to go about purchasing a DM3MD other than ebay? they are i think way over priced---5,000$?!?!? thats kinda high. Or would i be better off getting a 912 or 914 ce? what do yall think?

Not really... they are so hard to come by that it would be a waste of time looking at shops. Most people know by now that eBay brings top dollar for them, so you're best waiting for the one or two that pop up every month or two on there.
If you are undecided about spending that much, I wouldn't jump to a 912 or 914... those are completely different guitars than a DM3MD. If you want a DM3MD, you'd really need to stick with a Martin to get a similar guitar... I posted this comparison a while back...
List price, model (number produced, year)
---
$????, D-35 30th Anniversary Edition (207 made, 1995)
$4499, D-35 Ernest Tubb Commerorative Edition (90 made, 2003)
$3199, M3SC Shawn Colvin Signature Model (120 made, 2002)
$3349, HD-35 (standard production model)
$3479, HD-28V (standard production model)
The Shawn Colvin may be the most interesting of the group. It is M sized (Jumbo shape, but with less depth) and has a mahogany body with a center wedge of rosewood in the 3-piece back.
The other option is to find a late 60's D-35. They are made with Brazilian rosewood and generally cost around $3000 (5,517 were produced).

thanks is not really the cash--i dont mind spending the money on a new guitar just not a used one--on ebay its hard to tell how used the guitar is. i only wanted a dm3md cause its daves sig. guitar i really prefer taylors and ill probably go with a 912ce i know dave uses a 914 but thats a little to big the 912 looks just like it. ive got a good friend at the local guitar shop who will do it for $3000 i think thats a good deal?

That's probably good that you are gonna get a Taylor if that's what you really like... I'd hate to see a DM3 go to somebody who would rather have something else, if you know what I mean.
As for the price, that's a good price on a 912ce. 40% is really becoming the standard maximum discount nowadays, and that's where his price is at. If you called around you might be able to get it a bit lower, but that's up to you... the only downside is that you will have to pay almost $200 in sales tax if you buy local (unless he has a scheme set up to get around it).

As a side note, I think you should stop worrying about what Dave plays, and get a guitar based on what you really like. If you're getting a 912ce solely because of Dave, you're really wasting a lot of money. If you closed your eyes, you could play a brand new 712ce and never know the difference, except for the extra $1000 that you would have saved.

Make sure you read about the different between the X12's and X14's, it has to do with the body shape/size. Make sure you get the one that will fit what kind of playing you want/around going to do.

i dont want it only cause thats what dave plays--it is a beautiful guitar i love the pearl inlays around the body and the vine inlay on the fretboard is killer but dont get me wrong i love martins and the dm3md, but i want a guitar with a cutaway right now i will prob buy a dm3md when the mood hits me again. i was just looking on ebay and came across a dm3md and it got me thinking about it. .... did you sell your taylor after all?...2600 was a good price.

Yup, I got $2600 for the Taylor (paid $2400), $1200 for the OM-21 (paid $950), and $300 for a Big Baby (paid $175)... it was a good week :D
