Just thought I's through this out for discussion.

I was scouring the liner notes of Folsom Field to find out who played the guitar solo on Watchtower, but then having watched a downloaded vid I realized it was Butch playing a guitar patch..:ugh: His phrasing is so good I believed it
was a guitar player, and a bloody good one at that. And the tone on the patch was great. Much better than Timmy's thin over processed sound on RR.
My admiration for Butch continues to grow........

Any thoughts?

James

wow... a keyboard sounds as good as a les paul into a marshall...

and i've never heard a les paul nor a marshall desribed as "thin" before... other things i've heard criticized but never being too "thin"...hmmmmmmm.

In this case I think, yeh. It's also got to do with how it's recorded and mixed,
I was thinking also along the lines of how tim fits in with the band.

D&T is one thing, DMB&T seems to be something completely different.

I agree. When I first heard it I thought, "Who is playing that?" So then I popped in the DVD and saw Butch pounding away on the keys and was like oh wow...thats cool. I like Butch, he adds alot to the band in my opinion.

i know it sounds good but i cringe when i see that. it's just not natural.

i just meant tone... i dont doubt the technically butch's solo was solid...

tonewise i like tim on red rocks (and the playing) ... i think hes subpar on chicago though. especially liog...

that said i can't honestly sit and compare the tone of a les paul/marshall and that of a keyboard; and not because they're not SUPPOSED to sound different... because they DO, the fact of the matter is, you get better sound out of a high end guitar into a tube amp.

its like comparing the tone of butch's keyboard and a real high end grand piano. (obviously when butch was playing a piano part)

Off with his head...off with his head. Tim Rules!!!:twak
Though I wish he would lay off that processor at times. He's such a talented player without it. But hey, I love the natural sounds of instruments.

I didn't mean this to be a dis Tim thread, but pro Butch. I like Tim too!
Especially his acoustic work with D&T.
But as a guitar player of 20+years, for me it's all about tone as well.
I was just siting that as an example of where a great player, with an over processed
sound and poor mix (even if it's a Les Paul into a vintage marshall head, listen to early Al DiMeola, or early Van Halen for great examples) totally takes the focus away from the player and puts it on the effects, sucking some of the life out of it.

:thumbsup

Though I wish DMB would bring a lead guitarist back into the mix. I always loved it when there was a guitarist along with Butch (a la the Central Park Concert). Hey Trey is free these days...on the other hand, the Phish heads would really blame DMB for breaking up their favorite band.

I personally have never seen Butch play guitar, but I know he does play. I visited his studio last weekend while I was in Virginia because a family friend owns it, and, since I visited after dinner, Butch had left, in his control room was a Danelectro guitar. I take that to mean he plays.

I only know one thing. Timmy RR rules your face so bad.

I personally have never seen Butch play guitar, .
The thread was a reference to how Butch plays very "guitaristic" sounding lead lines on the the keyboard with a guitar patch. Not that he actually plays guitar.

Butch adds a tremendous amount to their sound. I was listening to a Crush from 98 before, and it was soooo empty without him on the keys.

I like the occasional guest guitarist, but their lack of a lead guitar is part of what makes their sound so unique.

Now I am listening to a DDTW from 98, and again, no Butch. Very empty.

Oh, OK, I thought you were saying for his phrasing to be so good, he must be a guitarist as well.

i hear what your saying... it IS in the end all about the tone, and i agree tim's could be better at times...

on the other hand; van halen?? oh no, i hate his tone, i really do... great guitarist though. in his own way.

tim's acoustic tone is amazing though, that hd28 is the best acoustic i've ever heard. i'm not kidding at all either there.

Eddies tone in the early days smoked!, I don't like his current sound now either.
I saw them as unknowns in '79
backing up black sabbath from the front row. (am I dating myself here?)
It just blew me away. Guitar straight into a full on Marshall.
My hair stood on end for days.
I do agree ,there's nothing like the sound of a guitar straight into an
amp with the tubes red hot. Some things you just can't duplicate with chips and software. SRV is another great example.

This is so funny. It's been a couple of years since I bought the Folsom Field CD and I always thought the solo is Tim on a guitar. I guess that speaks plenty about my ear.
On another note, it might sound cool to have Trey join the band, but in my opinion it would never work. I have a feeling that Trey would just take over and overshadow some of the other band members. Just take a look at Warren Hayes in Central Park. Even during Jimi Thing his solo was by far the best part of the song. What I want to see is Dave playing some lead guitar. I'm sure he can do it. The rest of the band can always lay down a groove for him to work over. I really don't understand why he is content just playing rhythm guitar, especially after being around Tim Reynolds for such a long time.

prolly cuz he has Timmy at his finger tips any time he needs him. daves an awesome writer and player, but im sure he knows he cant out play tim. also, i think the bottom would totally fall out of the songs live if dave was playing a lead rather than rhythm
