ok here's my situation...

i bought a Fender DG-11 acoustic dreadnought last year and have been doing pretty well for not having any lessons. my friends and i often play weekends and such but i have been forced to use a mic and PA system to amplify my guitar. I'm looking for a soundhole pickup (its not worth a real good pickup for my $170 giutar) to purchase that gets the best sound without spending over 80 bucks. I have done internet searches but its obviously impossible to hear sound quality in product desriptions. I am wondering if this is a worthwile purchase just to play for friends or a small gathering and also asking suggestions on brands and models. Additionally, do i need an equalizer or will i be fine with just the pickup if the amp i'm using has decent equalizer controls? Thanks for your help!

well it depends on who you're playing for. if your playing for the people you said then you don't need much.

i just bought a fishman neo-d (same brand dave uses on his taylor's but a different model) for $70. it's all passive (no eq/electronics/batteries) and sounds wonderful. i haven't played around places with a lot of noise so i don't know how it sounds when playing hard and loud over things, but it sounds great when strumming hard for a small group (less than 50) of people.

if you want to get one with an EQ grab the fishman rare earth, but those run like $150

also, if you want a sound clip of my soundhole pickup just ask :)

im really new at this and know nothing about pickups, but wouldn't the amp combo have more to do with how it sounds when the volume is up then the actaul pickup?

the amp just projects the sound from your guitar. true if you have a shitty amp you'll probably have the shitty sound, i'm not too well versed but a good pickup/eq is the basis of your sound along with the guitar itself. if you start out bad there how do you expect to improve it?
