whats the difference?
in easy terms

cuz im looking at getting the new
takamine cool tube preamp for my guitar
just wanna know what itll do

i like tube amps. don't know what a tube preamp is. tube amps rule my faces.

Piezo is a type of pickup, not amp. Tube preamps consist of tubes such as 12AX7s which will give your tone a warmth not often found in solid state amps. Tube power amps (not preamps) come with tubes such as 6L6s, which are larger than preamp tubes. They both help greatly in tone, but tube power amps will give you more power. For instance, while playing in a medium sized club, guitarists should generally have a 100 watt solid state amp. If they have a tube preamp, though, with a solid state power amp (also called hybrid amps, probably what youre looking at) you need maybe only 70 watts. For an all tube amp, though, (with a tube preamp and power amp) anything above 50 watts is overkill. Overall, more tubes will generally give you better tone (subjective, though) and more power. Only problem with tubes is they are a little more high maintenence. Tubes need replacement on average every year or so. Some tubes last decades though, so it kinda comes down to luck.

Piezo is the type of pickup that was used in the Chet SST. It picks up the vibration of the string, as opposed to other pickups where the strings are magnetized.

it is not a tube pickup, i have seen the guitar. it is a piezo pickup (UST) with a built in mini tube preamp that you would presumably run through a solid state acoustic amp or directly to a pa system.

oh...well thanks id never seen it before. i guess that clears a lot of stuff up.
