Welcome to the Best Recording Opinion/Feedback/Source File Thread of Summer 2004.

This thread/forum can be used to post comments about recordings. Also use this thread to find out when a recording has become available. So use this thread to your advantage. Get other opinions, list your opinions, and just keep track on the current recordings being spread.

Listed below is each of the played tour dates with taper info (purposely in alphabetic order). If you click the tapers name the source file for that recording will come up for you to view.

Look through the thread for opinions on recordings. Many times Ants will make a list of their choices.

If you happen to have a recording not listed here please at least send me the source file so that i can host it for others to view. My AIM screen name is JoeMal1121 and my email is Joe@antsmarching.org.

NOTE: It is very important that the tapers want you to know that this is nothing offical. Everyones opinions will differ. Each taper puts a great amount of work into them. If you can, download them all and listen for yourself. That's what I would recommend. Once again thanks to the tapers for everything they do.

the schoeps source is louder, but the bass sounds sloppy, and the recording is more airy in my opinion. i'll stick with the akg source. i'm biased though.

i'd be interested to know what type of playback systems people are comparing tapes on. if you've got some crappy playback system you really shouldn't be comparing this stuff. :)

be on the lookout for a dvd-a disc of my tape.

I think both sound similar, and it's more about personal preference. I haven't had a chance to compare them on my high end system. Thanks for getting the tape, and I look forward to your dvd-a version since I actually have one of these players.

I'm no Connor, but here are my picks so far:

6/11: Berryman
6/17: Shambro
6/18: Sarnovsky (waiting for his reconvert)
6/20: Ice
6/21: Drews (I had a hard time deciding between Ice's and Drew's, both were outstanding)
6/23: Jones
6/24: Jones
6/26: Naylor
6/27: White (getting Naylor's now, this may change after I listen to his)
6/29: Naylor
6/30: Berner (haven't heard anything else yet)

OK, here's some preliminary opinions. And as I've said before, this is all my opinion, and all the tapes sound excellent. You should also know that I'm a sucker for AKG's :)

6/11: Ice (over Lynn, Berryman, and Maler)
6/17: Haag (over Diegel, Hoyt, Sarnovsky, and Shambro)
6/18: Sarnovsky (over Lesiak)
6/20: Ice (over Formwalt/Stockdale, Sarnovsky, Willoughby, White, and Cronk!)
6/21: Drews (shout out!) (over Ice, Formwalt/Stockdale, Sarnovsky, Haag, and Cronk!)
6/23: Jones (over Culbreth)
6/24: Jones (haven't seen any other sources)
6/26: Naylor (over Thoma, Berard, and White)
6/27: Naylor (over White)
6/29: Naylor (over Sisak)

OK, I don't really feel like going into this, but I guess I will. 6/17 was very close for Haag and Shambro. Both are solid tapes and sound great, and I listened to the both a ton before making a decision, but I decided to go with Haag because it's got a little bit more fuller sound and a tad less bass. Who knows...maybe that'll change if my Sennheiser HDR-45's ever come. As for 6/20, I was with Chris, and clamped on his mic stand, so it kinda captures the show from where I was at. I know that's kinda lame, but hey, these are MY choices :)

I popped Drew's 6/21 into my CD player this morning, and it sounded much different than what it did from my speakers at home. I'm re-downloading Ice's 6/21 now, and I'll pop it into my headphones and come up with a final decision then. :)

Also, 6/29 is Naylor, hands down.

I'd say Naylor's is a touch better than Hayden's, but not by much, not at all.

Chris' 6/21 sounds a little empty in my CD player. I'm going to give Ice's a shot again.

Doesn't Furbush's recording have distortion in it and isn't it a little thinner then Adam's recording? The only problem with Adam's tape is that the tracking on it changed with Warehouse moving to the end of disc one to make everything fit.

I am just wondering if I am the only one that noticed these things in the Furbush tape, if there is something I missed or other criteria that you used when you made your recommendation.

Thanks for your response

I have heard the Jon Koch tape from GGP and it is a bit on the quiet side. The clarity is not as good as some other recordings I have heard from 2004, but, still, the crowd noise / chatter is minimal and the quality is good enough to be able to enjoy the recording more than once. I actually listened to this source before Alex's. I will check out Alex's soon, but I was waiting for a second source because of the comments in his TXT file regarding the wind and crowd noise.

Just heard my first bit of Alex's tape, and I'd say that although it is louder, Boyd can be heard at a much higher level, for example, the Koch tape has more of a balanced sound to it--Dave's voice blends better with the instruments IMO. Based on the flat acoustics of the polo field, it may be hard to get a stellar recording of this show, but I must admit both recordings will keep me happy until the band releases the official recording of this show. :D
