mixing with taper sources

i did a search and didnt see a thread on this. i was wondering if anyone ever experimented with mixing a taper's source to reduce crowd noise. i have seen sources that have been modified, but are there any ideas on using studio equipment to do this. also, any ideas on equipment to use (kinda a dream listing), but this might irrelevent if the dmblive.com website comes into existence.

I bring some of them into Sonar 3 pe and do a little eq'ing and bring the levels up
occasionally jsut for fun.
