It was like the 4th longest homer at the Jake.
Edit: 3rd longest...
Didn't know that... damn!
How about we go infielder for an outfielder? Jeter, thanks. A consistent leader for a consistent leader. (only Manny gets a 7 on the funkometer)
Sure, take Cano........... PLEASE!!!! Phillips maybe? Giambi? :lol
Umm, how about not...
HAHAHAHA! :)
Serious question though, why is it that every year they shop him around? They've even thrown him on waivers if memory serves. Is it the flightiness or the contract?

Nice! Pettitte is one of my favorite players. He is good and classy. Jeter is not a favorite of mine, I am just sick of his mug on commercials! Giambi, great guy, just made some dumb choices that will forever taint him! No love for Mo? ;)
Also, A-Rod is just amazing. I have enjoyed him since Seattle. He's just that good. When he came to NY I was ecstatic! I have been behind him since day one and it is damn annoying that all these same shitheads who have bashed him since 2004 are now singing his praises. If they have possibly run him out of town I will be livid, after all these are the same fools who booed DiMaggio, Mantle, Maris, Rivera, etc, etc. :rolleyes
Oh, Mo, right, sorry, my bad. He's my all time favorite Yankee!! Without him the Sox might never have won the ALCS in 2004!! Oh, and I agree with everything in your first paragraph (except for Jeter's mug, there's not enough of it around here! :evil ). Giambi won me over during a home run derby a few years ago. He won the derby and was so adorable and happy for the family that got the house and whatever prizes because he won. He had such joy for helping out someone else. I found that quite touching in this day and age when most athletes are concerned for what's in it for them. And Pettite is just classy.

As my nephew says all the time "I hate the Yankees in the baseball way" but not as human beings, and there are things that transcends baseball and moves into humanity. I would never wish anything bad on any Yankee player ever (well, mabye Bucky Dent - j/k). And I used to think I wanted the Yanks to play poorly all year, but that's not true either, I wasn't enjoying this season as much when the Yanks were 12 games behind the Sox. I like this way much better. :cool

So can I just say that I'm VERY excited about this Gagne move? Our starters essentially need to give us 5 innings per start. With Delcarmen, Okie, Gagne and Paps waiting, our starters have to have SO much confidence going into their games. Plus, with Hansen starting to pitch great after finding his slider again and Buccholz coming up in September, we're looking at a '96 Yankees type of bullpen...

We're getting our shit together slowly. Schilling's back, Gagne is finally able to settle in now that his first appearance is out of the way, and the offensive lineup is falling into line.
Once Buccholz comes up at the end of the month and takes Wake's spot in the lineup, we'll be good to go. I'm just glad we had that huge lead to piss away before we got our shit together...

wow, why did we get gagne he is doing so bad.
Yeah, he blows right now but Theo would have been crucified if he didn't pull the trigger and the Sox ended up blowing the division. The price was too good to pass up; even for a rental. Despite his troubles he is a definite weapon out of the pen. Plus, Okijima is coming up on 60 IP and it is only mid August; so you want him fresh for the stretch run in September. He is still technically a rookie, if it wasn't for Pedroia he'd have my vote for ROY but you still never know how his arm reacts to overuse.
Basically I can think of about ten reasons to get Gagne but not one to pass up that trade; despite that he is liability right now. As a Yankee fan I hope he caught Mark Wohlers disease but as a realist I am guessing he can work through this, his stuff is too good. Remember, even Mo had a stretch like this to open the last however many seasons.

Which is why I said 'technically' a rookie. ;)
Either way though, he's on pace for about 75-80 innings. I couldn't pull up his Japanese numbers so I am not sure what type of workload is normal for him but that many IP is pretty step for a middle reliever regardless of age or experience. However, you want to limit his use to an extent so he does not have a dead arm come late September going into a stretch run or short playoff series. Gagne will certainly lighten the load.

Agreed. Rivalry aside I am a baseball memorabilia nut. This is what I want now! Mantle, Dimaggio, and Williams; Steiner authenticated and framed. Just having a conscience crisis on price; but I caught up with someone tonight who owed me $350 worth of DMB tickets so I have the money in hand - just a question of whether to pull the trigger or not. Really could not ask for 3 better players to have hanging on my wall.
What do you think, buy or pass? Bear in mind I already have a DiMaggio, 4 Mantles, and a Williams that are authentic. Ahhh decisions decisions! If it goes for under 4 bills I am leaning towards yes!

I saw that too actually, last time I was there. The one with Ted and Joe I assume, that nicely framed one? Talk about expensive though! That whole store is nuts. They wanted 2 grand for a 1998 Yanks signed photo and I laughed, put my team set of 8X10's together for about $300 and I like having signed photos of everyone on the 40 man in a binder far more than a single pic.
Still trying to get my uncle to sell me his '27 Yankees ball. His dad was a stadium cop so there is no way it is fake, he was always interacting and drinking with those guys; his pictures with guys like Ruth, Gehrig, Lazzerri, Combs, etc, etc are amazing. He wants to sell it but not being authenticated the offers he got were far less than he expected - to which I said - ME ME ME - keep it in the family! :)

Me too on the window shopping, however if I was a millionaire I would buy a ton of stuff from there.
I go up there some time just to spend a hundred bucks on the slots, win or lose, and get those free drinks and I use my points for a room and get loaded! That place is much more fun than Foxwoods IMO. :)

Well in your defense (and you've got to know how hard that is for me to say) I'd pick up something similar if it was like Mickey Mantle or Whitey Ford, or Roger Maris, or Thurman Munson or someone like that. :thumbsup

Okay, I respect you about ten times more now and that is saying a lot since your a Sox fan! :)
I respect you intellectually and as a genuinely good person. Only one on your list I cannot seem to get an autograph from is Maris and I would love that but they are rare because he was so shy. My list of autographs is amazing to me. From Williams, to Mantle, to Joe D. to Gretzky!
Not to mention every Yankee involved in the most recent championship years from 1996 to 1998 and a few before they won that first title (Mattingly being the best example). Also a few who came on after the last title including Matsui, A-Rod, Shefifeld and of course Aaron Boone; who was not associated with a championship but was still the key player in a VERY dramatic moment!
Eventually I want a set of autographs from every Yankee HOFer and I am well on my way! Only problem signatures I will have to win a lotto to grab are Ruth and Gehrig unless my uncle bites and sells the ball to be at a decent price- family discount so to speak! :)
Also, I broke down and bought the DiMaggio, Williams, and Mantle framed and autographed (by all three) and authenticated picture! Cannot wait to see this! Just couldn't resist even if it ended up costing me $337 with shipping - I doubt you can get all three of those guys autographs on one picture for much less than that! I am psyched and eagerly awaiting hanging this one! :)

Well thank you very much for the compliment Jamie! As a true fan one should appreciate the greatness of any player, whether they are from the dreaded rival or not. And I am a sports fan. Granted with baseball I only really follow the Red Sox (and of course the Yankees), but I still believe in the purity of sport, and those guys of old were some of the last vestages we have of the true purity of the sport. It's a lot harder these days with all the scandals involving roids, and off field antics, etc.
I (thankfully) do not have the money to start a collection of autographs of the greats! So now that you will have two autographed photos of Ted Williams, then one would make a great gift to a new friend :D . I did actually get to see Ted Williams once. Back in the early 90's he finally allowed the Jimmy Fund to do tribute night to him. It was held at the Wang Center and I got to go! It was really incredible. I remember Stephen King, Dom Dimaggio, Carl Yazstremski, and a few others getting up and talking about him. He was clearly uncomfortable with all the allocalades! But he took it in stride and was very gracious. That is one of the most memorable evenings of my life and I'm very blessed to have had the opportunity to see that. I didn't get to meet him, but it was still a great event.
And Roger Maris, I just found out that he wasn't in the Hall of Fame. How can that be!? I had always just assumed that he was in there, what the heck is that all about? Even if he never put up big numbers for the rest of his career, breaking that record he deserves at least a special place in there or something! I've never been to Cooperstown, one of these days I'm going to take a trip out there.

I think I can agree with that. Nobody has been in shouting distance of Boston in the AL East basically all season, so I kind of think they've been lulled to sleep a bit. Coming into this series, the Red Sox had absolutely no pressure, while the Yanks came in basically having to win all three to keep any hopes of the division alive.

I was in the car on my way home from class listening on the radio when this happened, but I did see the play on the Yankee postgame show. Youkilis was on 2nd when a ground ball got hit to ARod at 3rd. He went for a tag on Youkilis, and then threw to 1st to get the "double play." But the 3rd base umpire ruled ARod missed the tag. This is because Youkilis ran out of the base path, and actually ran several steps along the infield grass, which is an automatic out. Well Torre came out to have a discussion, and the umps huddled. Then they reversed the call, and Youkilis went crazy. I think Boston knew that Youkilis should've been called out, but Francona went out to make the point that they should get the call right the first time. I agree with what Tito did.

I've got a question for the Red Sox Faithful here. Now me being from Philadelphia originally my main allegiance has always & will always be to the Phillies, and I lived in LA for 5 years leaving me still with some love for the Dodgers, but for several years now my sort of surrogate favorite team for the AL, if you will, has been unequivocally the Red Sox. The 2004 postseason, I was as enthusiastically into following all that about as close as I'd imagine I could be for anything short of the Phils being in the same place (plus one of my very dearest best friends is a Boston native, so that helps).
And as such, I was stunned and hurt when Johnny Judas Damon actually went and signed with the Yankees (& not that it matters, but he did once say that he'd "never" become a Yankee at one point, yea?). I was so disappointed by this, and wished so badly I could've been there in Boston at the start of that one year so I could've booed him as loudly as possibly in his new pinstripes.
I just happened to be wondering, now a couple years removed from the initial departure, do Boston fans still really give him a hard time, if not outright loathing him and practically wishing him death? Because frankly everytime I'm watching ESPN or something and come across Yankee highlights and I see him, I wind up scoffing at the screen and shaking my head, I wanna give him the finger for defecting. And shit like I said, I'm just from Philly. It just got me curious what the "forgiveness" factor is at this point in the heart of your city after this much time passed, if at all.

Whats your thoughts on the Joba high pitches? Honestly as a pitcher in high school you either hit a guy or you knock him down. Joba has had pinpoint accuracy, there is no reason he would throw well OVER his head twice. I just don't see it. It didn't prove anything. Now if it was neear his chin at 98 that's different. But as a pitcher if you don't hit him or knock him down it makes no sense. Not to mention there really was no reason for it. But what are your thoughts?

It's a little harder for me because I grew up in the era where players either finished out their career with one team, or did not end up at the rivals team! That being said, I also think the rivalry is half the fun, and part of the fun is being "upset" with someone for defecting! Does it affect my life? No, but does it affect how I watch a baseball game, yes! Because it's adds to the intensity of the game. Heck I still remember when the Sox let Fiske go and he ended up in a White Sox uniform, that was hard! But he was never booed because it wasn't the Yankees that he ended up playing for. So for me, it just adds to the fun of the game, but I don't take it seriously.

I listened to this online here in New Zealand. With 2 outs in the ninth, i found that MLB.TV was showing it for free, so i switched over, which used the same window as my audio. That cut out my audio, and the window played a 30 second commerical before it loaded the video. By the time it started up, Buchholz had struck out Markakis. I missed it.:BANG:BANG:BANG

I missed most of the game. I got home and saw Youklis hit the 3 run homer, then I jumped in the shower, got out and they kept showing Buchholz sitting alone on the bench and I couldn't figure out why! I can't wait to watch the replay of the game later on NESN.

Agreed, but he's also lost plenty of 2-1 games, 3-2, 1-0, etc. His record I'd say is pretty legit.
Meanwhile, how about your Red Sox? A week ago, they were starting a series, and winning even 1 out of the 3 would in effect put the Yankees in the coffin for the AL East. After last Thursday, it was 4 games. Now, 4 days later, it's back to 7, with 7 games less than there were last Tuesday. I'd say losing 3 straight at Yankee Stadium ended up meaning nothing to your division hopes, just a small bump in the road....

Honestly, I wasn't too worried about those 3 loses to the Yanks. It certainly makes it interesting for the later series against your Yankees! Of course, I won't really feel "safe" until the Red Sox are up by 7 and there's 6 games left to play. :lol I do wish they would take Tavarez out of the lineup, but then after yesterday's game with Dice-K "keeping it interesting" maybe we need to keep Tavarez in the rotation. I dunno. It's too bad Beckett is pitching against Halliday tonight, I'm not too hopeful for the Sox beating Halliday!

He had a small bump in the road. Sort of like Rivera has every year.
Good pitchers like Gagne get out of it, and he has gotten out of it.
Dice-K's record IS legit by the way. He is no more over rated than Wang is.

You can be a good pitcher and be over rated.
I'm not knocking Wang, but he does have the Yankee offense behind him.
Matsuzaka has been through a rough patch lately, but there is nothing indicating that he won't get back on track. He was lights out for a while this year. To say he isn't very good is an ignorant statement who one would expect to come only from a Yankee fan who doesn't even know how the playoff system works.
smeritt
09-10-2007, 06:59 PM
Your right because I ever said he was no good. I said he was over rated same as you about Wang. Problem is Dice-K is 14-12 with a 4.44 ERA and 23 home runs given up. The most on the Red Sox staff. Not to mention the 70 BB's the most on the staff. I simply said based on this year he was not worth the amount of money it took to get him. Now mind you I also pointed out the fact of the wasted money by the Yankees. But your right I am an ignorant Yankee fan. No one came in here picking a fight simply talking baseball and then you go throw insults. People like you make Red Sox fans look like douche bags which is why I don't normally come in here. I garuntee you many people don't know the exact science to the playoff system. Doesn't mean I don't know baseball. Based on this year Dice-K has not been worth it. With the Red Sox line up( which is just as potent as the Yanks) he shouldn't be 14-12. But I'm ignorant what do I know

I have read through some of the baseball threads and seen you say Matsuzaka isn't very good.
I also saw where you said Josh Beckett won't be very good. 18 wins later and probably the Cy Young award winner that statement proves to be stupid.
Next year, when Matsuzaka has a mid 3 ERA and 18 or so wins, we'll have this same conversation.
Dice-K is in his FIRST YEAR in the states. Wang wasn't anything special in his first year here. I agree that so far, he hasn't lived up to his hype, but to say he is over rated and not very good this short into his career is retarded.
BellybuttonKid
09-10-2007, 07:27 PM
O and i'll take my 18-6 record and 3.69 ERA and go be overrated......
To me, Wang is a solid pitcher. He is an innings eater. But, in my opinion, wins and losses don't tell the complete story with a pitcher. Wang strikes out virtually no one, and gives up more than a hit per inning. I just don't think he is the type of pitcher who will ever win a Cy Young award.
Just my opinion.
smeritt
09-10-2007, 07:29 PM
I've also said I felt like an idiot for saying Beckett wasn't very good. I admitted I was wrong. Good try.
I've also never said Matsuzaka wasn't very good. You quote me and I'll beleive you.
Wang in 05 his first year came onto a team struggling desparately and stabilized a dying rotation to help make the playoffs with an 8-5 record in 18 games. He didn't exactly have a full first year. Now his fulllll first year as a starter which would be last year when he was 19-6 with a 3.63 ERA and a Cy Young contender. So your argument has no bearing. He helped the Yankees make the playoffs inm his first year coming in half way.
Dice-K was talked up like he was going to win the Cy Young in his first year. To me he has been a bust. Everyone talked about how he could pitch so many innings and he looks tired.
Again, I'm ignorant so I'm probably wrong.

Odds are he wont win a Cy Young. And your right he isn't a strike out pitcher. You don't have to be a strike out pitcher to be dominant. He is a groundball pitcher. Your going to give up hits as a contact pitcher because groundballs find holes. Not everyone is a strike out pitcher. But even so not being a strike out pitcher in two and a half years he has compile 44 wins. Not half bad I'd say....
BellybuttonKid
09-10-2007, 07:53 PM
No need to get attitude. I never said Wang wasn't good. I am just simply throwing it out there because you seem to think Matsuzaka won't be good. You said Wang's first full year was a success, and I agree. But why does he get a pass in his first year? To me, this year is Matsuzaka getting used to everything. Next year will be the year he starts to be a bit more consistent.
But I think it's unfair to only compare Wang's "first full year" to Matsuzaka's first year because Wang still had a partial year under his belt where he had already gotten used to things.
In a couple years, Matsuzaka will be the better pitcher....
BellybuttonKid

This was pretty funny in todays Daily News:
In a bizarre set of circumstances, I got a "save" from Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon yesterday.
I hailed a taxi to take me to Fenway Park and happened to notice a cellphone lying on the seat next to me.
"Excuse me," I said to the cabbie, "But I think your previous passenger left his cellphone here."
"Oh my God!" he exclaimed. "He a ballplayer!"
"A ballplayer?" I said. "Was he with the Yankees?"
"No, no, he with the Red Sox," he replied.
"Did you get his name?"
"It was a long, funny name," he said, "beginning with a 'P.'"
"Papelbon?" I said.
"Yeah, yeah, That's him."
"Don't worry," I said. "I'm a sportswriter. I can get the phone back to him."
When I got to Fenway, the clubhouses weren't open yet so I headed up to the press box. As I was setting up my laptop, Papelbon's phone rang.
"Hello," I said, "Is that you, Jon?"
"Yeah," said the voice on the other end, "Who's this?"
"This is Bill Madden," I said, "with the Daily News in New York. I've got your phone as you can see. You left it in the cab that I took the ballpark."
"No way?" Papelbon said. "What a relief. I can't thank you enough."
"No problem," I said. "Just give me credit for a save."

I wouldn't worry much about Papelbon, I'd be more concerned about Okijima. Take it from someone who has watched a lights out closer for ten plus years - they have occasional bad days and they are not superhuman. Tough to bring a closer in with the tying run in the box, no one out, and facing the middle of one of the most lethal lineups in baseball. That is a tough order for anyone. I was surprised at how hard they hit him though, Jeter's single was a defensive swing but Abreu crushed that ball and Alex waited and hit a bullet up the middle. Chalk it up to a bad situation and bad night for him to be up in the zone.

But I was surprised too with how hard they hit off him on Friday, that just goes to show what an off day he was having! I am more concerned with Okijima. I think Hideki is just overworked, Yanks have slapped him around good in his last two outings against them. Not sure what his Japan high was but he is approaching 70 innings and that can take a toll on a setup guy. Better hope Gagne keeps pitching well or that bridge to Papelbon is treacherous! Luckily you are in a position to rest him up for the playoffs, a luxury no one but the Angels have right now.
Any concerns about Paps arm after last September?

:confused I don't know what you are referring to, I wasn't paying that much attention last September.

Yeah, I don't really see that as a factor this year. I think he's still going strong. Just a bad day on Friday is all.
Thanks Greg! :)

No Jamie None at all because I don't know what I'm talking about
He got Tired last year and injured it a bit, at least that's what I heard from my friends.
thats why they wanted him to start this year, because it makes total sense for a young kid with a shoulder problem to throw 200+ innings
Fixed it for you. And yes, I'm very concerned about the condition of his shoulder. They convinced him to close to relieve the stress on his shoulder. I'm not sure he can carry the load of a 45-50 close per season guy. I'd much rather see them sign Gagne as a closer for the next few seasons and let Paps work up his arm strength to become a starter in the future...

Interesting, two vastly different interpretations of Papelbon's status. To be honest I would have some concerns right about now.

Jamie They thought starting might help since he would have Four Days before Pitching
Where If your a closer you have to be Ready to go everygame
Really he has done good this year and there is no real worry

I bet you think DIce K sucks and are Bullpen is shit also ? Have you heard of the phrase "political front-office jargon"? That's all it was. Think about it. Closer compared to starter is the difference between throwing 80 innings a year and 200+ innings a year. Regardless of rest, being a starter is much more stressful on a shoulder. Use your head...

um no it is not dude
Innings is not the stress part
The Warming up and having to be ready to go everyday is stressful also
but we both know that nether of us will agree since were both stubborn New Englanders

Okay, sorry I asked! :lol
Anyhow, does Wakefield make your postseason rotation if he has another bad outing?
Lester/Burnett tonight. Good chance for the Yanks to get it down to 2.5; makes saturdays game loom even larger. Plus, I want to see how close to the edge we can get you Sox fans for the next two weeks! :)

Bringing Eric Gagne into a 1 run game in the 8th inning is practically the same as saying "please beat us, we want you to win".

god why does the red sox bullpen love blowing leads. or even the whole red sox team love blowing leads after like the 7th inning. its so fucking gay when they play well all night and then gagne comes in gets two quick outs. then out of no where he gives up 3 walks and 2 hits. i am so pissed off right now that they can't close out games anymore.
