:thumbsup Agreed.

It's definitely far too early to SERIOUSLY worry about anything. I think it's in our blood as Boston fans to worry (although we have had tremendous success the past few years...). Not to say that I entirely discredit everything prior to the all-star break, but look at what happened in 2006. We were in command for what appeared to be the entire way leading up to the break and then we completely fell off the radar coming up THIRD in the AL East. Too many things happen throughout the course of a season. It's a marathon.

Thats the thing about Fenway even the bleachers is not that bad of seats and still a damn good time.

I was two rows from the back wall in right field for Papelbon's first start ever. It was also the game Manny came off the bench to pinch hit (after the crowd chanted Manny for like 5 minutes) when everyone thought he might get traded that day. The place erupted when he got off the bench and put a helmet on. He singled up the middle to win the game. Damn that was an awesome game. It felt like it was the ALCS or something. I have never been part of a Fenway crowd that pumped except for when DMB played Sweet Caroline there.

I'm sitting right behind the Sox on deck circle and when JD stepped in to start the bottom of the fifth I yelled, "hey JD, how about you get your shit together and start earning your paycheck!" He turned around and smiled then went out and singled. When he got to first he turned and winked at me and I replied, "alright, bout damn time!" Then to end the inning he looked at me and I turned and pointed to the back of my jersey, which is a number 7 jersey (originally bought when Trot was 7), then he yelled that it was missing a signature so he wants me to meet him after the game so he can sign it...

Nah, I disagree. I think they learned after renteria to wait at least two years to decide if the person can play in boston before trading them. They really took it in the ass with how much they payed atlanta to take him off their hands. They'd probably have to pay even more to get rid of JD and/or Lugo.

:thumbsup That's some good shit!

I'm willing to let one year of less-than-spectacular performance slide if it occurs in the first year with a team, but only if the player comes from an outside league. Dice-K, JD both got free passes last year from me because I do feel there is some learning curve to playing in a different league AND getting used to playing in Boston. I'm REALLY hoping we see even more from Dice-K this year. He had a very good season last year, but I'd like to see less home runs hit off him this year...

Japan Trip Boycott?? From Boston.com.

Manager Terry Francona and Red Sox players were upset this morning after learning the team's coaches were not going to be paid for the trip to Japan. They were so irked that there was a players-only meeting held and the possibilities raised of refusing to take the field for today’s spring training game or even threatening to not board the plan for Japan unless the situation was rectified.

"That's one of the things we've been talking about," David Ortiz said of the potential Japan boycott. "It's really [expletive] up."

Francona and his players were under the assumption that his coaches would receive a stipend for their season-opening trip to Japan, albiet a smaller one than the players. He informed his coaches they would be paid $40,000. However, the Sox manager was told by members of the Oakland coaching staff that they were not being paid. Francona had thought it was unusual that one team would be paid and the other not. So he checked into it and found he and his coaches were getting nothing. Francona said he doesn't care about himself but that in some cases the $40,000 represents some two-fifths of a coach’s salary.

The Red Sox are scheduled to leave Fort Myers after today’s scheduled Grapefruit League finale against the Blue Jays (12:05 p.m.), but now it appears both the game and the flight are somewhat in question.

The scene here in Florida is an odd one, for sure. There have been conversations going on about the issue among the Red Sox staff, including one between Mike Lowell and Francona and between Lowell and Theo Epstein. There is definitely a threat the players will take some action. Meanwhile, there are a couple hundred suitcases outside the locker room being tagged and weighed for the trip to Japan.

The Red Sox are scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics in two season-opening games in Tokyo on March 25 and 26.

The flight isn't too bad. The trick is to sleep through it as much as you can. When I did my first trans-pacific flight, it was horrible, but by the 2nd and 3rd one, i slept through it the entire way. Its kinda like time travel. Leave the States on a monday, arrive in a new country on a wednesday.

Air NZ is pretty cool because each seat has its own tv screen with loads of movie, music and gaming options. Im pretty sure most trans-oceanic flights do this now just to combat boredom. But yeah, nothing like stepping on land again after being in the air for so long.

Are you watching it on anything other than MLBTV? I'm willing to gamble on him for a while to see if he pans out. I'll tell ya, I remember what I was doing and where I was when all that happened. I'm not giving up on Clay just yet. I am, however, somewhat familiar with the statistics of rookies that throw a no-no in their first year. The stats for them usually aren't good.

Yeah, I mean he has a lot of talent in my opinion. People just have such high hopes for him, and expect him to be amazing right now. We'll see once the season starts, but based on his spring I am not feeling to good for him right now.

I just saw it on the boxscore on mlb.com. I wasn't watching it.

Cmon guys, hes only 23 years old. Sure the hype is high, but you can't expect him to be a professional for a few years. Look at Josh Beckett. As great as he was in 2003, he wasn't an utterly dominant pitcher until last year. No worries, Clay will be fine.

Edit: And by professional, I mean being a mature pitcher, relying on smarts and game experience rather than just pure stuff.

I realize that, and that is what I don't like. There are going to be a lot of people expecting great things right off the bat. And the fact is that he might not be ready yet. We'll see once the season starts though.

It's hard out here for a top prospect in a big media market. Mets and Yankees have the same kind of problems.

I wonder if Pelfrey would have been a good #3 starter in Detroit or Atlanta by now

Me and my buddy have an annual $50 bet on the Yanks/Sawx season series. Last year it was weird cuz they only played 18 games instead of 19, meaning there could have been a push, but the Yanks took it 10-8. Stupidly I bet another buddy in early August $50 that the Yanks would take the East, which they almost did. In the end my one buddy simply paid the other one. And the arrogance of Yankee fans has been so annoying for the years prior to that. What you don't understand (and probably never will understand) is what it was like being a Red Sox fan all those years prior to 2004. And those horrible, gut wrenching, abyssmal years make the past 4 years seem all the better! That's what makes the Red Sox fans so high and mighty and arrogant.

Oh, and there's no "supposedly" about Yankees fan having been arrogant and annoying before, they were. And I don't care to know what it was like. Them and their fans are sore winners as well as sore losers and they make everybody aware of it, that's the issue at hand.

And again, I just wish that "The Nation" would perhaps mature a little bit and stop hiding behind the fact that "they did it all those years so now it's our turn".

Not one Yankee fan I know tries to wrangle pity out of any willing/unwilling listener because their team hasn't won a series in 7 seasons since '00. Also, not one Yankee fan I know stuck it to any Boston fan before '04 for any other reason than those teams and it's fans always blaming something else other than their own shitty play (i.e. a curse), and that's the difference.

These Yankees don't win world series because they're not good enough to, and every Yankee fan knows that. It's not because of Babe Ruth, A-Rod, or some fucking Goat.

Listen Laurie, I like you, this rant is not directed towards you or any other Red Sox fan in this thread in particular but towards the collective. Have fun, I've gotten to see the Yanks play in a night game against Cleveland and a day game against the Rays, both at the Stadium.

C'mon, these threads were not only made for the fans of the team in the title but also for the fans of said teams arch-rival and also any haterz!!!!!!

Have fun, I've gotten to see the Yanks play in a night game against Cleveland and a day game against the Rays, both at the Stadium.

While both experiences were out of this world, I'm sure they'd both pale in comparison to a Yanks v. Sox game....especially one with probable playoff implications.

Again, although only 1 and 3 games in, both teams look dece.
Yes I know! And don't worry, I don't really mean it, but I was still going to say it!! :lol

I've never been to Yankee Stadium so my goal was to get to a game this year, and it didn't even matter who they were playing against. I just lucked out with the baseball gods and managed to get a Yanks/Sox game near the end of the season! ;) I'm going with my brother, it'll be quite special. :)

I obviously missed the Yankees perfomance yesterday and forgot to check on it, otherwise I would not have made such a blunder! Don't worry I won't let it happen again!

i waited on four yankees fans on Monday....they started harping on me like CRAZY when I let a "wicked" slide out. They all got really drunk and started singing "New York, New York" and I'd just keep singing "Sweet Caroline" to them as I refilled their drinks.

They were obnoxious as fuck, but a lot of fun :) It was cool just going back and forth. They left me 30 bucks on 80 dollars worth of beer. Hot.

People can say what they want about Sox or Boston sports fans, but I think its pretty impressive that you can watch a game in Oakland and crowd wise it sounds like the game is being played at Fenway.

People love, and love being associated with, a winner. It just straight logical that they're going to draw on the road.

I realize that most of ya'll in this thread have "been a fan since birth" or whatever, but it's just plain fact that there's going to be people hopping on the bandwagon no matter what team it is that wins.

Guaranteed that if the Rays won a series you'd see nothing but Rays fans all over the place.

Who knew who the fuck the Bulls were until Jordan started winning Championships for them?????????
