I was at all 3 games this week (what a waste of my money).

First off, Rays fans are the RUDEST I've ever met and I've been to lots of stadiums. They were mean, hostile and threatening. They'd yell stuff at the Sox fans, curse, etc. during and after each game. I realize they have never been good, but at least act like you have some class. I can understand Yankees fans talking smack, they have all the championships. But Rays fans? They have the #1 pick (for being the worst team) every year.

The Trop is a hell-hole too. Indoor baseball is just stupid. I'll never go back to that stadium and those unbelievable fans.

And Rays fans, if you don't like the 15-18,000 fans chanting "Let's Go Sox" then maybe you should find some fans and actually get them to your games. It is pathetic you are in first place but it takes Boston to get a sell out at your place.

Finally tonight's game. The reason we lost was Terry's mis-management of the bullpen. I would have started Dice-K one more inning; if he gets in trouble then you pull him. But the pen sucks, and going to it so early, I knew we were in trouble. Then Okajima is great and he pulls him after one inning - cost us the game. They should have left him in for another. Declarman had already pitched the previous night and we all know Hansen is turning into a version of last year's Gagne.

But with the bases loaded in the 7th, he should have brought in Papelbon. You can't always save your closer for the 9th, b/c tonight's game showed that the game might not even get there. He should have brought him in during the 7th, pitched the 7th and 8th and gone to someone else in the 9th. HORRIBLE job Tito.

We need to trade for some bullpen help, or we'll flame out in the second half. Hopefully Clay and Colon return maybe then we can put Masterson in the bullpen.

Also, Tek is KILLING us. He can't even put the ball in play. I wish we could pull a softball rule and make him a DFO and not let him back. He'll be below the Mendoza line by the end of the Yankee series. I think they need to sit him for a week or so and let him get his mind back into it.

Manny too was horrible. The Tampa fans were merciless, and he didn't do anything to quiet them up.

What's the point of bringing Paps in early? He might've secured the lead, but who then are you going to go to in the 9th? Timlin? Delcarmen? With the way the bullpen is, surely someone else would've blown it then. If Paps was a four-inning-a-night guy, the sox would be sweet.

Doesn't matter. In a situation like that, you bring in a guy you KNOW is going to shut the door, break the other team's back and hope someone else in your pen can finish things off. This whole "closer can only pitch in the 9th" philosophy is bullshit. He's the best pitcher in your pen, you bring him in when you need him the most, not just in the 9th...

I disagree. The sox tried the whole "closer by committee" thing a few years back and failed miserably. Of course they didn't have a Papelbon in the pen, but they did abandon the philosophy in mid-season. The players apparently wanted stability in knowing when they were going to be called on.

I ask again, what's the point of bringing in your closer in the seventh to prevent a lead, only to have someone blow it in the ninth? It leaves the team vulnerable at the end of the game. Im more of the thinking that your closer should be able to come in early and get those four, five or six out saves if necessary.

I think that if the bullpen has 3 or 4 surefire guys, then the closer by committee would work. Clearly though, the sox don't have that, and they desperately need bullpen help.

The point is you use your closer when the game is on the line. Managers nowadays pigeon-hole the closer to the 9th. Sometimes (Wed. was an example) the game is won or lost in the 7th inning. You bring your best pitcher out and kill the rally. That is what a closer does.

I've rather Pap pitch the 7th (and maybe the 8th) and get out of the jam, and then roll the dice on someone else in the 9th (against different Tampa hitters).

Closers are too good and make too much money to not pitch in different situations, in my opinion.

I think maybe you learned WORLD CHAMPIONS from NY and Boston fans.

Your team is good, no doubt. But putting down the World Champions is not how you go about it when your team is winning. Learn how to win classy, b/c as I saw this week, there are no classy Tampa fans.

Be happy your team is in first, but smack talk to the Red Sox and our fans is only going to come back and bite you in the ass (karma).

But either way it's a gamble. You can choose to use the closer in the 7th, and gamble that the lead isn't lost later, or you can gamble by not bringing him in in the 7th and hope that the lead isn't lost then.

However, say you spend your closer in the 7th and the lead is then lost in the 9th. The lineup will only have three outs to make up that difference. If the lead is lost in the 7th, the lineup will have 9 outs to make up that difference.

Im not saying there is only one way to manage bullpens. I just think that with the way the sox bullpen is now, it is too much of a gamble to have paps hold the lead that early in the game.

I see both sides, and there have been some good arguments made.

Here is my point again. I don't think it should be used a lot (bringing the closer in early) but every once and awhile I think it is a good decision. Paps hasn't pitched in a week now. Waiting to get the game to him proved to be a bad decision (as did only pitching Okajima 1 inning). I think when you are in grave trouble (bases loaded, no outs) you take the chance there and hope for something later. The odds that the Rays would have loaded the bases again, were slim, IMO.

Either way, I think Tito needs to think about it for the future.

Theo needs to earn his money and make some magic this month. This team - as is - won't even make the playoffs. I don't have a good feeling about Big Papi either, so we need a big bat and some relief pitching. A big bat that was a utility player (and could catch) would be sweet, but I think that is asking too much.

I went to a cubs game this weekend in Chicago. It was a good feeling when I got home and got on the internet to see the Sox won today and the Rays and Yanks lost. I also found my missing iPod this weekend in a bag. I had been missing it for about 5 months and couldn't believe it either when I found it. Great day overall!

Over in the Yankee thread they are talking about a story that A-Rod left the stadium after being removed from the game on Tuesday night. If he did, that is just being a poor sport, IMO.

But here is the question I pose for Sox fans ... Is not getting MLB approval to sign A-Rod the best thing that ever happened to Boston? There is no doubt he is a hell of a player, but he is a "me-first" player and definitely not the team type guy Boston needs. The Yankees sign him and have nothing to show for it except a lot of meaningless HR's and postseason struggles. The Sox don't get him and now have 2 World Championships in that time period.

I just wanted to throw that out there and see what you all thought.

Although A-rod's numbers would be awesome to have in Boston, I agree. With A-Rod on the team in 2004, the dynamic would have been totally different and there's no way they would've won it, especially down 3-0 againsts the yanks. A-Rod would've mailed it in at that point.

07-17-2008, 02:22 AM
Here's another question: Would you pull the trigger on the Ramierez/Beckett/Lowell deal again?

On the one hand, Ramierez would be the premier young SS of the league, and Boston wouldn't have it's SS problems that they've been having. On the other hand, you lose a #1 pitcher, and a solid 3rd baseman.

I have to say yes, because without Beckett, and lowell for that matter, they probably wouldn't have won it last year.

rickyh24
07-17-2008, 02:26 AM
I would take Hanley back in a second......but that trade got a ring.....so I would never want to go back in time and not make that trade. We needed an ace at the time and Theo went out and got him. We got a huge bonus with Lowell. He was injury plagued before he started with the Sox. He has been nothing short of great since then.

Theo knew what we were giving up. It just had to be done.

DavefaninNZ

The other question is would Hanley develop as quickly in boston as he did in florida? He might be a different player if he never left boston.

rickyh24

Well he got thrown right into the mix in Florida. I really would have never thought he would have became so good so quick. I always knew he would be this good. I just thought it would take a year or two more.

Two weeks ago he was talking about when we lost to NY that "Boston is 7 games back in the lost column and that will be hard to overcome." It was JULY Joe. A week later we were in first place.

Well let's see, you mentioned nothing at all about the Wild Card in your previous post and because I read what is written not what was intended, that is what I responded to.

Secondly, still not in the realm of the reality of the situation, which is that currently the Rays are in first, the Sox are in second and the yanks are in third. Last time I checked no one had an accurate crystal ball, but then again, I live in the real world, not the pretend one.

you made a bad assumption. er...perhaps I made the bad assumption in thinking you would know what the WC standings were.....when I said 3 games, I assumed you knew the yankees were only 3 back of the sox in the wc standings.

The goal isn't to win the Wild Card then hope to win the AL East. The goal is to win the AL East. You don't need to 'pass' the wild card standing first. You want to be in first, the Wild Card is the hopes for the 'almost made its'. So, like I said, I don't pay attention to the Wild Card until it's the Red Sox last chance. The first hurdle is to win as many games as possible to be in first place for the division, not first place in the wild card.

Yikes. The Yankee fans are out in full force in this thread today...

It was a good weekend...

Are there any Sox fans who are at least a little disturbed by this sweep that just occured? With this weekend the standings become a bit more interesting, but then again, you guys did get swept by the best team in the league. I think it would have been unacceptable to be swept by the pitching staffless A's.

The Angels are the first team to 60 wins, and K-Rod will probably shatter the saves record. John Smoltz reached 40 saves fastest at 108 games. K-Rod has matched that feat in 90 games...

Ah, but the Angels are the best team right now. It should soften the blow a smidge, unless you guys meet in the postseason, but since the Sox aren't making it that far.... :lol

What should make the Sox fans more nervous is the way the Yankees have kicked off the season post ASB on fire, and the Sux have been cold as ice. That could be potential trouble in the long run. A 7.5 game lead is now a 4.5 game lead....

Manny Ramirez's on-again, off-again relationship with Boston management seems like it's off again. Speculation in Boston is if Matt Holliday becomes available the Red Sox might let Ramirez walk and take a run at Holliday. Ramirez, 36, is represented by Scott Boras, who thinks Manny can play until he's 40, and will likely seek a four-year contract for his client, should Boston not bring him back.

I'd like to see Holliday in a Sox uniform!

1. elsbury is not the fastest man in baseball. hes not even the fastest man in the al east..thatd be justin christian.

2. Id rather have a lead off guy hitting .315 than a lead off guy hitting in the .260's.

If he isn't the fastest, he is one of the top 3. Who else is faster (maybe Jose Reyes). Seriously. Have you really watched him play? If he is at first and the ball hits the outfield he is at third. In the playoffs last year the way he ran the bases as a rookie, I was so impressed with his speed and acceleration.

And of course the Yankees want the older player ... that is why you are in the situation you have been the last 5 years and why the Sox have 2 World Championships.

See? It's not always Yankees fans that start the championships shit talk...

And there's plenty of fast players in the MLB besides Ellsbury. He's fast, but off the top of my head, I'd say Ichiro, Carlos Gomez, Carl Crawford, Willy Taveras, and Juan Pierre rival his speed.

Yes I've seen him. And I've read the scouting on him. Justin Christian is faster. case closed on that one.

And do you follow baseball? You would see the Yankees aren't out there buying old stars. THey are cultivating their minor league system...which is why its one of the best in baseball. And if you want to talk championships.....26>7. suck that bitch.

At the bottom of the screen. The news ticker.

You see them on ESPN, Fox News, and CNN and stuff. It's the little bar at the bottom that gives tidbits of information.

I had to watch the Braves/Phillies game at work, so I had to watch the baseball ticker when I got the chance.

I dont see that carrying them very far this year. We have the exact team we had last year minus Schilling, but plus a healthy Ortiz (soon) and more experienced Clay, Lester and Masterson. I'm not speaking of last night specifically, I'm just looking at our BP as a whole and I'm not happy with the MR. Delcarmen is hit and miss, Timlin is near useless, Hansen is unproven, Masterson is solid, but can't be expected to carry the load and Okie is not fooling anyone anymore. Gotta give credit where credit is due. Francona is handling this Manny mess with his customary class. The Boston media are vultures, possibly more than NY, and they keep goading him into trashing Manny. The front office seems pretty ticked with Manny. Fans as well seems frustrated. However, Francona is doing all he can do to diffuse tensions. I think he know the rather obvious fact that the team is better off when Manny is in there and doing all he can to keep the man happy. I like Francona, he is the consummate professional, always doing what is best for his team. I applaud him for that.

Also, for what it is worth I don't think Hansen was throwing at A-Rod, he control was awful yesterday, not sure he could have hit ALex if he wanted to.

As for Joba and Youk - I honestly don't know. Given the past between than I can understand Youk's reaction. However, if Joba wanted to hit him tat is about the last spot in a game you want to do that.

Hopefully this is over.

I do however, get a kick at the ire of RSN in regards to this thing. Not like the Sox haven't had a headhunter recently with mango tree boy who seemed to drill people with immunity, mainly Jeter - and a ball at KArim Garcia's head (who I will admit was a scumbag) but still a head ball is a headball even to a jerk.. :)

If Boston's pitching is bad, then what is NY's? Boston's pitching is better than the Yanks.

Beckett > Mussina

Dice-K = Pettitte

Really? I think differently here.

Beckett 3.83 ERA < Mussina's ERA 3.26. Not to mention he's got more starts.

Lester over Chamberlain isn't a fair comparison. He has a 2.03 ERA since making his first start, and 6 out of 10 have been Quality Starts. And he's given up 3 HR to the 323 batters he's faced. I think Joba would have a better line with the same amount of starts, but that's just speculation.

Dice-K over Pettitte makes sense.

It depends on what the Sox can get for him. There aren't a lot of teams that will take on his salary, there's trade talk every year, but nothing's happened yet because the Sox want a lot for him and no one's been willing to cough it up for him. I want Manny to stay and I think he will. It isn't the first time he either demanded a trade or said it was okay to trade him. He is an emotional player. But tonight's performance showed he still has it, whether he is currently happy right now or not.

Papi/Manny in the lineup is a feared duo, and the Sox need to keep that in-tact. I say keep him, pick up his option for next year and then see where it goes. Nobody is going to give him 4-years/$100 million. He should be happy taking $20 million from Boston next year.
