Don't talk down to me because of my age, I'm a 5th generation Red Sox fan. I know more about players from the old days than most people who were alive to see them because of stories from my father and grand father.
They're not going to retire the number of a guy who was only a 3 time all-star, never won an MVP, isn't in the HOF, hit above .300 once in his career, and is only a .272 hitter lifetime. It doesn't happen...
I'm not trying to do that, but perspectives are different when you actually see the players in action. His numbers weren't among the all-time greats, but there are other intangibles involved in how great a player is besides offensive statistics. Being a team leader who is there every day, and is the heart of your team counts for something that numbers don't show.
Let me give you a hypothetical: Jason Varitek. His careers numbers do not put him among the greatest catchers of all time, but you cannot dispute his importance to your two championships. Say 20 years from now someone says to you "Yeah that Varitek guy, what was so great about him?", what would you say?
I always preferred the players who did not seek the limelight and just did their jobs. players like Dwight Evans, Don Mattingly, and my all-time favorite player Robin Yount. I'd take a team full of those types any day over the players who think money=respect and get their talent from a syringe.

Amazing what lust for money will do, eh? How greedy can a man be? The man is a gazillionaire, and he's pissed off because his old team was thinking about paying him only 20 Mil next year.

^ No shit...when has he ever tried that hard??? It wont last long it was just opening night motivation.
Bay looked great at the plate and in the field last night. I'm glad Theo made this move. They would have gotten nothing for Manny he just would have walked in the off season. Now we at least have a solid left fielder, who will give 100 percent at all times.

I'll be interested to see what happens with Manny in the off-season. For as good as he is, he's certainly not young, and his history of antics almost makes me think that $20 million/year is going to better than what he might get after this season.

It's certainly possible.
That said, I still kind of wish Omar had traded with Pit and flipped him for Manny instead of LA :BANG

so I was in Boston for Manny's final game and the first game with Bay. When Manny came up there were an assortment of boos and cheers, but I think the boos outweighed the cheers easily
When Bay did anything there were people on their feet cheering and giving standing ovations. It was so much more fun...not only because they won...but because Manny was gone at Fenway.
I'm glad he is gone too!

I'm glad Bay has done as well as he has for his first three, but it was hard to watch Manny go 4-5 and be as locked in as he was tonight for LA. I think the Sox should run more. Crisp, Ellsbury, Lowrie, Lugo can all run and I think Pedroia, Bay and Drew could all steal 15 bases a year if given the chance. With less pop in the lineup I think it may be time to evaluate playing a little more (read: minimal) small-ball.
rickyh24
08-04-2008, 02:44 AM
Less pop in the lineup??? Bay's power numbers are identical to Manny's this year. If Bay keeps it going he will make Theo look like a genius...again. Since his price tag is about 14 million cheaper than Manny's.

Honestly, I'm glad the Manny ERA is over. Obviously, losing his bat is a huge blow to the lineup, but it's not as bad as I initially thought. Jason Bay is a upgrade in speed, fielding, can hit for power with a solid batting average, and not to mention the guy shows some hustle and a great attitude. I mean, since being here he's said all the right things, and has backed everything up with solid play in left field, not to mention he's cheaper, younger, and will give us more years than Manny.
Losing Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen is a huge blow, but the Sox have enough youth to make up for that.
And to Manny actually showing hustle for once, and having two great games in a row. Just wait a couple weeks and the true Manny will come out. We'll be seeing the half ass Manny that we all know.

Nady had 6 RBI yesterday (should've been 7, but that's a different story).
Bay is pretty much an even swap, minus about 15 million dollars.
But like I said, I don't think he'll put up numbers as good since he's in the AL, the AL East to be specific. But he won't be a scrub or anything.

It's the fact that people are forgetting that Bay is coming FROM PNC park (one of the most notorious pitchers parks in the game), where he put up all-star numbers, TO Fenway (with a HUGE wall only 320 ft. away for righties) and then act like they know what they're talking about...

Bay tripled with 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th in his first game as a Sox. He then scored on an infield hit by Lowrie. While obviously Manny has a proven track record I'm not going to write Bays clutchness off yet...he does have a lot to prove though. I was seriously sick of Manny and I am more than happy with what we got. Manny was gone after this year anyways. Bay will be around for a few years at a much cheaper price tag.

Bay will be around for a few years at a much cheaper price tag.
so your answer is...?

so your answer is...? I take Bay because I know if he hits a grounder, he's going to leg it out...

I'm pretty sure Manny would have not turned a ball hit of the monster into a triple, like Bay was able to do that game. So I guess it depends on the situation.

Second, where's the crying on our part? All I'm seeing is a Yankee fan trying to make himself feel better about his loser team by pointing out the fact that the Sox aren't in first place at the moment.

Good point. The first post about the shitty team was a joke... being that you don't frequent these threads, I had to take the opportunity. Looks like it's that time of the month though, and nobody thought it was funny.
It was an accident eating the mold. I grabbed the bread and it was still soft. I ate the sandwich while reading, so I didn't focus on the crust too much.
I woke up this morning to make lunch, and the whole half of the loaf was rather green. Still soft, but moldy. The crust was a bit hard yesterday, but I cast it aside.
