The Red Sox have claimed Padres right fielder Brian Giles off the waiver wire. Thus, Boston entered a 48-hour period in which the Sox have exclusive rights to try to work out a trade with San Diego.
Giles? Really? Do we need another outfielder? How about someone that can pitch the 7th or 8th innings? Can Giles pitch? :)

That is most likely a move to keep him from going elsewhere...such as the Rays. Giles would veto any trade to Boston, no doubt.

Yeah, like scooby said, the Giles situation is just to block him from going to the D-Rays. Since the Sox claimed him, if they don't work out a deal he will return to SD and that'll be the end of it. The Rays won't even get a shot at him. Great, heads up move by Theo imo..

They currently have 5 on the roster but Gomes is a waste and Gross is generally used as a defensive replacement. And I'm not sure what's up with Upton. It looks like he doesn't even care at times. Maddon benched him yesterday for failing to run out a ground ball.

This is interesting...
The commissioner's office is investigating the circumstances of Manny's final hours with the Red Sox. The Boston Globe has learned (from a source with direct knowledge of the inquiry) that Bud Selig directed Major League Baseball executive vice president Rob Manfred to contact all parties for an explanation of how things unfolded around last week's trading deadline. According to the source, Manfred has yet to report back to the commissioner.
Here's why Selig's office is looking into the matter:
The Red Sox had an option to retain Ramírez in 2009 for $20 million. They had the same option for 2010. Ramírez, who will turn 37 next season, wanted to be a free agent at the end of this season. His agent wanted the same thing. Boras inherited Ramírez's old contract and stood to earn nothing until Manny signed a new one. It was in the interest of the player and the agent to have the options dropped.
Manny's only leverage was withholding services and playing at half speed. So that's what he did.
I don't think Selig can really do anything about this....but it is interesting that they are looking into it.

Giles exercised his no-trade clause earlier this afternoon, nixing the waiver claim the Red Sox had made on the 37-year-old left-handed hitter.

I think it's simple due diligence being overly dramatized by Dan Shaugnessy. He is a piece of crap writer who will not let the Manny saga just end.

Push to the end:
Boston remaining games:
White Sox
Texas x3
Toronto x3
Baltimore x3
Toronto x3
Yankees x3
White Sox x3
Baltimore x3
Texas x3
Tampa Bay x3
Toronto x3
Tampa Bay x3
Toronto x3
Cleveland x4
Yankees x3
Yankees remaining games:
Minnesota x3
Kansas City x3

Baltimore x3
Boston x3
Toronto x3
Detroit
Tampa Bay x3
Seattle x3
Angels x3
Tampa Bay x3
White Sox x4
Baltimore x3
Toronto x3
Boston x3
We have 12 against Toronto, 4 against the White Sox, 4 against Cleveland, 6 against Texas (who can't keep up their pace forever), and the rest of our schedule is between you and the Rays.
You have 6 against KC and Seattle, but 6 more against the Angels and Minnesota and 4 against the White Sox. We share the number of games against Toronto and Baltimore, then it's all Rays and us down the stretch.
Here's how I see things shaking out:
Boston:
9-3 against Toronto
4-2 against Baltimore
2-2 against Chicago
3-1 against Cleveland
4-2 against Texas
7-5 against Yankees and Tampa
29-15 down the stretch
Yankees
4-2 against KC and Seattle
3-3 against Minnesota and Angels
3-2 against Chicago and Detroit
10-5 against Baltimore and Toronto
8-4 against Tampa and Boston
28-16 down the stretch
A game here and there, but I think that's roughly how things will shake out. All I know is the race at the end will be for the WC slot...

Just curious....Do Yankee fans blame Girardi or lack of pitching for this season? Obviously the Yankees will be investing in pitching during the offseason but will Girardi stick around? Hank seems to have a short fuse.

In this order:
inability to be consistent at the plate.
injuries to our #1 and potential #2 starters
team not taking too well to Girardi after Torre.
As I said earlier in the Yanks thread, I don't think the pitching was as big an issue as the hitting.
Inability to get that "big" hit in a big situation, inconsistensy among hitters, etc...
The pitching wouldn't have looked nearly as bad if we scored runs and came through in those "must win" games/situations.
I hate to blame injuries, too, but let's face it, we were plagued this season...but that certainly wasn't the biggest reason we sucked.
Also, Girardi's managerial style is a complete 180 from what they were all used to in Joe Torre. The transition was probably a small factor as well...
Bottom line, no excuses, go out there, play hard, give 110% -- we didn't. If you didn't get that big hit this time, make fucking sure you do next time. Just didn't happen.
Seemed like some of the team didn't care nearly as much as the fans do.
That's the deal.

Fact of the matter is with this Pedroia thing is that the writers would never vote a player MVP with less than 20 homers and 90 RBI which is what he's on pace for. Sure he's hitting 1 out of every 3 and he's on base 38% of the time and slugging 47%, but lines like those just don't do it anymore. The year Jete got robbed out of MVP his numbers were better, sans homers, and Morneau walked away with it. As good as your second baseman is playing, I just don't think he's even got a shot. The writers will show their respect with a showing between 3 and 5.

Thing is though that writers cover baseball - managers their team. Managers don't have as much basis for comparison. They're not worried about what their players are doing compared to the field, they're worried about what their players are doing between the lines that night.

But managers are paying attention because they have to play against the other players. They strategize based on the performance of the other players in the league.

I agree with you too, because its almost always about numbers. But you have to wonder what a torrid september will do for him. Say he hits about .400, 5-7 HR, 25-30 RBI and the red sox come back from 5 games out on Sept 1st to take the division? Surely it would be noticed by everyone in baseball, and depending how other candidates finished, he could sneak into first.
Of course, that is purely hypothetical situation though.

If Pedroia continues to hit like he is the entire month of Sept. (which would be a difficult feat, but who knows) and the Sox win the East (which could happen), then I think he HAS to have great consideration.
A 5'9 player is hitting .400 with a 1.147 OPS the last month. Amazing. (The last week ... .600 with a 1.529 OPS - WOW!)

Lowell and Beckett back ... looking good. Tampa loses. It would be great if we could be 1.5 or 0.5 going into the series with them next week and then sweep them.

What a week. Toronto comes through for us, the Sox win 2 of 3 in Texas and are only 1.5 out.
I was worried a few weeks ago (when the Beckett stuff started) about even making the playoffs and now I think we'll definitely win the East But at least we are 6.5 up in the WC standings (thanks in part to the Republican National Convention and the Twins long road trip).
7 home games this week. I like the pitching matchups with Lester, Dice-K and Beckett going. 2 of 3 would be nice, a sweep would be great. Heck, 6 of 7 wins this week and we might just bury the Rays.

I'm telling you guys, they feel the footsteps. I've said all season they'd fold this time of the year and they are. They don't have the balls to hang down the stretch...

corrected for accuracy and to keep it updated. and you should change the record in your sig, that's from like 20 games ago.

i'm really liking the pitching match-ups for this 3 game series, especially on our side.
Lester v Jackson
Matsuzaka v Kazmir
Beckett v Sonnanstine

Lester v Jackson
Matsuzaka v Kazmir
Beckett v Sonnanstine If Lester can take game one like he should, we'll end the series in first place. No way Beckett and Dice-K both lose at home...
