Just pointing out, that's all, we all saw how well the Clemens thing worked out.
Then again, Clemens was pratically kicked out by the head office of Boston, they did all they could to keep Pedro around. What Pedro did may have been business, but it's still pretty lousy on his part.

also looks like we've finally completed our starting rotation... although, the last thing we need in a another name like this! Now we've got Mueller, Millar, and Miller. hah.

Absolutely.
I'm very interesting in seeing how some of the new guys adjust to the ways of a Sox player...as well as how the dynamic of the team will change. In '03 it was a team of Cowboys, in '04 it was a team of self-proclaimed idiots, what's in store for '05?

should be interesting. We all know Schilling can pitch. Clement's coming off a 9-13 season. Miller was injured half of last year. Wakefield's coming off a 4.87 ERA season. And Wells is 41, who knows how much he's got left in the tank. My guess would be not much.

I think they're gonna be alright. The only problems don't come from them the come from the Bronx. If the can get that Randy Johnson deal up off the ground again and do end up signing Beltran it will be bad news.

awesome! let us know how that is; I've been meaning to check that out.
today's red sox tally:
-2 copies of the Stephen King Sox book "Faithful" (hopefully exchanging one for the series DVD)
-3 framed posters (world series champs, ALCS victory photo, and a vintage 1903 world series poster)
-world series champs edition monopoly
-world series hoodie and t-shirt
-ALCS champs throw blanket
-2 red sox christmas ornaments (including a sox nutcracker which my dad is convinced looks like millar:freak)
(and a series champs beer glass which I'd given to my father).
now all I need is the DVD and I'll be set :)

my immediate family isn't doing christmas til tomorrow morning, so i'll have to update then... but so far i've gotten:
2 WS on field celebration pictures
"Faithful"
WS throw blanket
Sox bottle opener
signed Varitek ball
2 shirts
2 hats
and a framed picture with shots of Schilling, Foulke, Pedro, Manny, Ortiz, and Tek.
edit: almost forgot to mention my Varitek bobblehead!

My update: this afternoon, I got a poster entitled "Bad Boys of Boston" that shows Foulke, Damon, Millar and Kapler on motorcycles. Apparently a relative heard that Millar would be signing at a Harley store nearby, so they got me an autographed one! I'm not really one for motorcycles, but it was still wicked cool...I'm hoping to track down a few other autographs before getting this one framed. :)
and I also received a pink WS Champs T-shirt (which is nice, because my pink ALCS champs shirt got damaged in the wash :()
anyone get the set of 4 WS shot glasses? I saw them on eBay and thought about it, but I decided the regular Sox one I already have was probably enough...

If that's so, you can make out the check to Tom Geragh... :p
Something I've been wondering is what the identity of the Sox is now. For the longest time, they were the underdogs, the lovable losers, the laughingstock of baseball. Now that they've won it all, aren't they just another team with a mind-numbingly high payroll, signing all the talent, bringing more disparity to baseball? Aren't they, in a way, just as bad as the Yankees in buying a championship?

I'll be pretty interested in seeing what their role is in the upcoming seasons as well. I think it's safe to say that this upcoming season, they're expected to do big things. I see a lot of Patriots comparisons in the future (atleast in Mass., anyway) and be expected to repeat this year or next. As much as I love the Sox, I'd be surprised (and pleased of course) if they pull that off. There will be a lot of "greatest comeback in baseball history" talk this year... but once the thrill of all that has worn off, I really don't know what their role will be. The press is going to have to get pretty creative.

Also... I've been reading "Faithful" the past couple days and in it, there was a great line that explains a lot to people outside Red Sox Nation about our feelings towards the Yankees. Very simple, but right to the point: "We hate what we fear, and we fear the Yankees." I'm sure there are some people who claim to not be fearful of the Yankees, or claim to just hate them for no apparent reason. In a twisted, Bostonian sort of way, it's a sign of respect to hate the Yankees. And yes, I suppose that in a way, the Sox are similar to Yankees in buying their championship.

There are some boo's that are obvious boo's of respect. Someone that boo's Jeter or screams how much he sucks is really just showing they fear and respect his talent enough to be so outspoken.

It's a shame we don't play the Mets at all. I'd be really interested in seeing how Boston reacts to Pedro as an opposing pitcher. As far as the fans go, atleast. I've actually had quite a few people tell me they're kind of upset that he didn't go with the Yankees since he decided not to stay here. That's exactly it. Those of us who were lucky enough to see it, are still in shock and relief that why would we want to spoil such a great thing by spending our energy rubbing it in people's (Yankee fans) faces? Because the fact of the matter is, it's still only 1 win to the Yankees 26.
However, and I suppose it's easy for me to say this, but I think I'd much prefer this one win to your several dozen. It just feels like it means so much more. I suppose that's a hard thing to fully understand though unless you've lived it.

Your distaste for Varitek is to be expected, but he is definitely a real player...a real TEAM player. He is the glue that holds this team together both on and off the field. If we weren't able to work a contract with him for next year and beyond, there's no way we'd be able to contend for a while. I mean, I'm sure we would've held our own for a little while, but we wouldn't get too far into the post season if at all.

His resigning actually gave birth to a new club rule. Any player who is with the Sox for 8 consecutive seasons (which Varitek will be, come Sept.) can't be traded without consent of the player in question. Which, I think is a great idea. Loyalty to a team deserves a little perk every now and then.

looking at the rising average salaries the players get paid is also depressing. at one point, these players were real people, many of whom took secondary jobs in the offseason and settled into new careers once their playing days came to an end. I realize that much of this could be taken as nostalgia for the "golden age" of baseball, and I'm sure that may be part of it, but it seems that our game was once a more pure creation. Whether that's the product of looking back on history in a more favorable light is debatable, of course, but I think we can all agree that baseball today is a much different entity than what appeared in the 1940's-1960's. (In his book "Beyond the Sixth Game," Peter Gammons places the dividing mark on the 1975 Wolrld Series, which seems as reasonable a place as any)
I blame the current state of the game on many things, such as greedy agents making decisions based solely on the bottom line (and often completely ignoring their clients' intangible preferences), an overactive, intrusive media intent on conflating sports figures and hollywood celebrities (do we really need ESPN to chronicle all of Derek Jeter's love interests? this was actually on the front page several days ago), and the players uninion -- after all, the concept of a union was certianly not implemented to help millionaires players battle billionairs owners, which may be cliche but is nevertheless the case. All of this has taken away a fundamental aspect of the game which linked players and fans, and as the players' salaries keep rising and the price of tickets follows suit, the fans will become more and more apathetic. At this point, if we don't get a salary cap soon, I'm not sure how the game can continue to flourish.
wow, I didn't expect this to turn into a rant. :ugh: sorry about that -- it's late and I'm not thinking clearly. eh bien...tant pis.

Oh, also... congratulations to Varitek for finally becoming the official team Captain :thumbsup
Our first since Jim Rice in 1989.
I've never understood why they name people captains in baseball. It's not like they have any more on-field authority than other players like they do in hockey (or do they?). I just don't see the need for a C on their jersey?
Either way, good deal on keeping Varitek.
But yeah, salaries are outragious. Since when have players made $10M/yr for leadership and defense, like Renteria and Varitek?

Slappy comes from the ever-so-noble swipe he took at Bronson Arroyo's glove when he realized he was going to be tagged out trying to get on first in game 6...seriously, what a cocksucker. Also, we found out in the postseason that his lips turn purple in the cold (we wouldn't know this until now because Senior Overpayed never could help the Rangers get that far). Sad times in Beantown
The "Big Unit" wanted the Big Apple. It appears to have finally reached fruition.
ESPN is reporting that the New York Yankees have acquired five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitcher Javier Vazquez, prospects and cash.
According to ESPN, paperwork needs to be submitted to the commissioner's office before the trade is finalized.
On December 17, the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers were working on a three-way deal which would have sent the 41-year-old Johnson and pitcher Kazuhisa Ishii to New York, outfielder Shawn Green and pitcher Brad Penny to Arizona and Vazquez and prospects to Los Angeles. However, the Dodgers backed out at the last minute.
Yankees president Randy Levine and Arizona's incoming chief executive officer Jeff Moorad resumed trade talks after Christmas without involving a third party and apparently reached an agreement.
The Diamondbacks wanted money to offset the difference in Johnson's $16 million salary and the $35.5 million owed to Vazquez over the next three seasons.
According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees will sign Johnson to a two-year extension for another $32 million.
Arizona likely received two minor leaguers - catcher Dioner Navarro and either third baseman Eric Duncan or pitcher Brad Halsey - and money along with Vazquez in the deal.
After blowing a three games to none lead to the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series, the Yankees have focused nearly all of their energy into upgrading their starting rotation with the free agent signings of Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright.
But Johnson was the centerpiece of their plans all along and his addition makes the Yankees the clear favorite to win the World Series for the first time since 2000.
Known as the "Big Unit" because of his 6-10 size, Johnson received little run support last season with Arizona. Despite a 2.60 ERA, Johnson was just 16-14.
A 17-year veteran, Johnson has finished in the top three of the Cy Young voting in nine of the last 12 years. He is a workhorse, logging at least 240 innings in six of the last seven seasons.
Third on the all-time strikeout list with 4,161, Johnson has a career record of 246-128 with a 3.07 ERA. He has been a clutch postseason pitcher, sharing Most Valuable Player honors in the 2001 Fall Classic, when the Diamondbacks bested New York in seven games.

A good defense always beats a good offense. That holds true in baseball, football, basketball and, if it ever comes back, hockey.

I rooted for the yanks in game 4 of the alcs. seriously. I just wanted them to beat us and get it over with quickly. part of the reasoning was that aqua teen was on at midnight, and we were watching with a yankee fan who wouldn't let us change the channel until the game was over. as midnight neared, I pleaded with her..."come on, you know they're gonna win!" no avail. finally, the clock passed 12, and the near certain loss combined with not being able to watch the one show that might have cheered me up got to be too much, and I stormed out in frustration. I watched the comeback at my place a few minutes later. it was great and all, but I didn't get too excited.
the whole of game 5 I spent still rootin for the yanks, started to feel ill (not game related) and left before the ending. I found out about the win as I layed in bed from the screams outside.
didn't even watch game 6 cuz I was sick in bed. I was still doubting, but starting to come around.
after that, I KNEW we were going to win game 7. no doubt in my mind. loaded up on wine and painkillers before the game cuz I knew we'd be heading to fenway to celebrate when it was over.
I failed to "keep the faith". oh well, we won, that's what matters.

a friend and I went down to NYC the weekend of nov. 5th to see a concert and drink with some friends from the area. the trip had been planned for some time, but after the series I was beside myself with excitement at the idea of wearing the sox hat in town all weekend. our friend warned me when we got down there "you'd better not wear that to the bars tonight. people are gonna be dumping beers on you, guys will be taking swings at you in the bathroom." the only reaction I got to the hat in any of the bars was one bartender we were talking to at last call who poured our beers, then poured three shots of yager "for red sox fans". turns out the guy was from cape cod. go figure. (in an unrelated aside, 10 minutes later we were outside smoking a bowl on the busy street right in front of the bar. I LOVE manhattan.)
all weekend long, every person I saw in a sox hat I gave the point, smile and greeting to, and it just felt amazing. the only sox hat I saw and didn't acknowledge was one GUY in a PINK sox hat (I dunno, don't ask me). sat. night after leaving a bar and all being smashed, I told one of my yankee loving friends that posada is actually a bitch. no less than 5 seconds later I was in a suffocating headlock on the ground having "posada's a ballplayer! he's a fuckin ballplayer!!" screamed into my face. if I could have breathed, I would have been laughing hysterically.
on the bus back, we passed yankee stadium. literally drove on the street right next to it. 4 hours later we rattled by fenway on the last stretch of the mass pike...my own personal victory parade of sorts. what a great weekend in my life.

the tig's won today, 9-1 over the phillie's. i'll tell you what folks, don't be surprised if the tigers flirt with the AL central crown. i'm not basing this on a spring training win. but this team has a solid lineup, should get decent starting pitching, and has improved their bullpen big time. yes, the central isn't great, but it works out for the tigers.

yeah, HR looked good tonight. i'll be looking forward to seeing him some more during ST.
Clement did okay i thought, a lot of trouble with command though... which can be very dangerous in this league. we'll see what working with Tek and Schill can do for him.
I'd say overall though, I was most impressed with Stern. i think he's got a real shot at being the 5th outfielder.

The Astros really have no hitting outside of Biggio, Bags and Berk (who is hurt). The earlier two are old and could easily be hurt. While the pitching looks good, who knows what might happen to 41 year old Rocket, Andy was hurt all last year, and Oswalt might not be able to stay healthy all year.

They have one of the best 1-2-3 lineups in the league (Reyes, Matsui and Beltran) Wright is a stud, Piazza will be better than now that the pressure if off him, Cliff isn't much, Cameron hit 30 HRs last year, and Dougie is the best defensive 1B in the league.
If the pitching stays healthy, they can be awesome (Pedro, Glavine, Trachs, Zambrano, and Benson) The only concern is the bullpen which isn't all that good outside of Loop.

You are overrating Reyes and Matsui. They had on base percentages of .271 and .331, not what you want from the top of your lineup. Piazza hasn't had 100 RBI since 2000. Cameron can give you some pop, but hits crap for average. Doug is great defensively, but can't hit worth beans. One thing you are right on is Wright is a stud. He and Beltran are the only two places in the mets lineup that stand out at me.
You are asking a lot if you expect that pitching staff to take them to the playoffs.

Matsui now has a year of MLB pitching under his belt. Reyes would look so much better in all numbers if he hadn't been hurt as much (big concern). If he stays healthy for the whole year, look out.
Piazza isn't that great anymore but since 2000, he's been the face of the Mets. Now it's Beltran which will mean pressure of Piazza and he's also not playing first anymore (he hit 100 points higher when he caught last year!)
Cameron is all right when you need the useless HR but can steal whenever he gets on. I agree about Dougie but he will save lots of runs and errors while patrolling first base
The pitching staff will be good IF IF IF IF they stay healthy

Exactly. Here's the article I alluded to...
Six Red Sox players tested for steroid use
By Howard Ulman, AP Sports Writer | March 10, 2005
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- At least six players on the World Series champion Boston Red Sox were tested Thursday as part of major league baseball's program to curb steroid use
Team vice president Mike Port said six to 12 players were tested but he was not allowed to give out names. He was contacted Wednesday night by the independent company handling the tests and told they would be conducted the following day.
"We never get the results," Port said. "I guess, as best I know, the only news that a club might get is that which might be less than desirable. Otherwise, no news is good news."
Players from several other teams already have been tested.
Under baseball's new steroid program, which still has not been finalized, first-time offenders are suspended for 10 days without pay.
"There might be some relief from a majority of the players," manager Terry Francona said. "Let's prove, I guess, their innocence. But I didn't see anybody panic in there. I didn't expect to."
Pitcher Curt Schilling, who has been outspoken about steroid use, was subpoenaed to testify March 17 before a congressional committee with six other current and former players.
He was unavailable for comment on Thursday. On Wednesday, after he was invited to testify voluntarily but before the subpoenas were issued, he said, "I think they asked me because I have an opinion. I think it's pointless because I don't think this is about opinions."
Johnny Damon, Boston's player representative, supports the testing program agreed to by the commissioner's office and the players' association. He said he wasn't tested Thursday.
"The game really needs to earn its credibility back," he said. "It's going to be good for this game, but, most importantly, it's going to make us aware that we can't cheat in this game and we have to play on an even playing field. Hopefully, kids can see that, too, and say, `hey, we can't get away with it either. That's the most important thing."
On Thursday morning, Port received the list of players to be tested and said all cooperated. Additional Red Sox players will be tested later.
"I'm glad this is happening because I've heard so much, read so much that I know is not true," Francona said. "This is the best way to do it. Just go ahead and test people. Then it takes that conjecture out because right now everybody's guessing."
I hope Francona's right about "proving their innocence" -- no Red Sox players have come under any suspicion, but at this point it's hard to realistically expect a completely clean clubhouse anywhere. :(

Sadly, it's the nature of the beast. The fans wanted to see huge home runs and high scores, not pitchers' duels. Everyone's to blame here. The Congress thing is only going to make it worse, almost like a witch trial. Everyone's guilty until proven innocent.
I still think the policy now is too lenient. In my world, everyone gets tested. You get caught, you're banned for life and all your stats erased from the record books.

I agree with Tom. Its cheating, and in my book, its the worst form of cheating. If Pete Rose gets banned for gambling, players should be banned for using steroids. Any player who uses steroids is cheating in a worse way than Rose cheated when he bet on baseball. I dont' think there is any way baseball can justify NOT banning a player who uses steroids.

Yeah, winter has been wicked long, but it's been GREAT!! One part of me doesn't want baseball to start cuz I love having the Red Sox as the World Champs :cool Quite frankly, I'd like to keep that title as long as possible. I haven't had nearly enough time to rub it into fucking Yankees faces (but then again, will there ever be enough time :lol ).
Anyways, this should be a very exciting year for us. Lots of aquisitions. Our bullpen should make us or brake us. I guess we'll have to see. Also, am I the only person who could care less that Pedro "The Fuckin Trader" Martinez left?

aw, thanks so much! but if it's too much of a hassle don't worry about it...I've seen them before and they don't yet have a big enough catalogue to vary their setlists that much.

I need people's opinion.
I was born and raised in Connecticut. (East of the River, so I follow Boston teams). Growing up, we went to about 3 Sox games per year. When the strike happened, my dad (like MANY Americans) went on strike against baseball. I was 13, so I was still heavily influenced by what my dad did, and therefore went against baseball also. I didn't pay attention til last June when I met a girl that like baseball. She is from CA, but went to school in Boston, and became a HUGE Boston Sports fan (I was/am already a Patriots fan for life, and Bruins (not Celtics... remember, I'm from CT, so It was all about UConn). So I started to get back into baseball. Not enough to buy any gear or anything, because for years, I was bitching about how much baseball sucked, but now all of a sudden I show up in Sox hats and jerseys and stuff?? How would that look. Like a big fat bandwagon fan. Admittedly, I did 'just' start to like baseball again. Not just because of the girl, I was actually excited for the games to come on. So since we both like the Red Sox... and they just won the series... does this make me a bandwagon fan??? I celebrated when they won the championship, but I felt shallow about it... like I didn't 'deserve' it.
Basically... I am a Boston Red Sox fan, but should I feel bad about being a Boston Red Sox fan now?

as long as you hated on baseball as a whole and didn't switch teams or anything like that... still a little shady, but i wouldn't call you a complete bandwagon fan.
edit: My dad was the same as yours... he has not watched a single game since the stike..

I'm a Indians fan...diehard and all, but I'd have to say that I'm pulling for the Red Sox a little this year...any time a team dryrapes the Yankee's the way the Sox did I owe them that much.

As if this uber-rivalry needed any more hype, the Red Sox will send the 21st century Babe to the mound in the fat form of 41-year-old David Wells, a collector of Ruth memorabilia and a man who owns one of the best winning percentages in the storied history of the Yankee franchise. The portly portsider will wear the Babe's No. 3 on his Boston jersey, channeling the Big Fella who pitched against New York the last time the Red Sox were defending world champs back in 1919.

All right Red Sox fans, you've got to go check out the movie Fever Pitch as soon as possible! I saw it last night with my dad and it was truely PERFECT! I could relate to this movie on so many levels it was scary (both as a Red Sox fan as well as a Dave Matthews Band Fan). I think it officially opens next weekend. Check it out.

I'll definitely be going to see Fever Pitch.
I don't care how terrible a movie (not saying that this will be one of them, but you never know), if it's about the Sox, I'm seeing it.
Although, I'm a sucker when it comes to movies about baseball. Even if it weren't about the Sox, I'd see it eventually.

If you haven't seen the extended trailer for "Fever Pitch," click here.
So here's my question: Why am I rooting so hard for a movie that prominently involves footage of Fenway Park, David Ortiz, the 2004 World Series celebration, the city of Boston and everything else to fail?
I narrowed it down to four reasons:
1. Not only was Nick Hornby's book about following an English soccer team, not only was it one of the better sports books ever written, but they already MADE it into a movie eight years ago. If you're going to bastardize the idea and Americanize it about the Red Sox, at least call it something different. I'm not sure why this enrages me, but it does. The lack of creativity in Hollywood is appalling. It really is.
2. If you're making a Red Sox movie, and you want Sox fans to like it, you cannot cast Jimmy Fallon. You just can't. It's bad enough that he admitted he doesn't like sports, and that he's had three favorite baseball teams over the course of his life -- the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox. More important, it's Jimmy Fallon! He's your choice as a diehard Sox fan, a guy who always looks like he's wearing makeup? Who was the runner-up for the role, the lead singer from Train? Think of it this way -- imagine if Jimmy Fallon played either of the lead roles in "Good Will Hunting"? Would that have EVER happened? So why the hell is he in this movie? I always thought the casting of Timothy Hutton and Michael Rapaport in "Beautiful Girls" was the least realistic casting of any Massachusetts character ever, but this one takes the cake. They could have hired 50 Cent to play the lead character and it would have been more realistic.
3. The trailer screams "chick flick," which is bad enough, but the scene where Fallon's character drops to his knee and makes the Opening Day proposal ... I mean, what guy would ever do that, and what woman wouldn't kill him with her bare hands afterwards? Is it possible to take the movie seriously after that scene? I say no. I'm also worried that this is one of those movies that will give women ideas -- like, "If Drew Barrymore can tame Jimmy Fallon and get him to stop watching so much sports by the end of this movie, maybe my man will follow suit!"
4. I don't blame Fallon and Drew Barrymore for being on the field right after Game 4 of the World Series, since they were actors just doing their job; if anything, I blame the Red Sox for allowing it to happen, as well as the Farrellys for not understanding how offensive that moment was for every Red Sox fan who had been waiting their entire
