I'm tryin to watch the ring ceremony on mlb.tv and everyone must be doing the same cuz it says the server is too busy to play in original form...The picture keeps freezing. They were lowering the banners and it the picture froze and I could hear everyone screaming. It's finally going smoothly...somewhat. I wish espn would jsut show it. Anyway...This is really cool.

I thought he was going to be better then Pedro and such a bargain. Isn't that why you got him?

Umm... By "our" history, I assume you mean Red Sox, and I think you're forgetting Lee Smith...
And they booed the balls off everybody but Mariano Rivera, who got the longest standing ovation of the day (including Pesky).

do you know who they will move to the BP when they come back???
Schilling
Wells
Miller
Clement
Bronson
Wake
????
Beginning of the season it was supposed to be Arroyo, but the way Clement is going...
My personal preference, btw, would be Wakefield- he's the perfect long reliever, can go anytime, and can throw all freaking day.

Flash got a good ovation for being a Yankee, and Gordon holds /held the record for consecutive saves for the Red Sox/ league, I remember going to games during that streak
Pitched in 21 regular-season games and five in the postseason for Boston...was on the 15-day disabled list from 4/18-5/10 and 6/12-9/27 with a strained right elbow...began the season by converting first 11 save opportunities, extending his streak to a major-league record 54...compiled a 2.08 ERA with a .174 opponents average through 5/31...was placed on disabled list after allowing four runs in two-game span from 6/5-11...underwent reconstructive surgery on right elbow on 12/13 in a procedure performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

Torre got applause, as did Rivera (for his "help" last week ;) )
and I was thrilled to see Pesky so included in the ceremony. After the previous ownership treated him so horribly, I was concerned that he would permanently turn his back on this team, but I'm glad he was able to put that behind him. To see him get a ring after coming so close in 1946 (and unjustly bearing the blame for the Enos Slaughter play) was truly heartwarming :)

nothing super horrible... just being cocky saying that he's now 1 for 1 with World Series attempts, how he's the only undefeated player on the team and that they should keep him around because of it. and when talking about how great it was to see former teammates today, he mentioned D-Lowe, Curtis Leskanic and BRIAN Roberts (as opposed to Dave Roberts)

We've been dishing it on them for a long, long time, they deserve to heap as much of it back on us as they want.
I don't like it, it goes against the natural order of the universe, but the Sox are the champs, nothing can take that away from them.
I look at the Sox friends I have, and they remind me of myself when the Rangers won the Cup back in 94. It didn't matter that the Islanders won 4 in a row or that the Rangers have sinced sucked serious ass since then. Nothing will ever change that wonderful year, that wonderful team back in 1994.

Uhh Genius, if you look back a few pages I actually told all the die hard sox fans to enjoy todays ceremony, we do have classy yankee fans. Check the thread some more before making a dumb ass comment. Some of us have lives outside a message board. Why would we hide? Because they handed out the championship rings...uhhh we know they won last October. Why because we lost the game? Umm only 150 plus games left! Not sweating the early season problems, as I am sure you are not either with the NEW mets! Try to stir up some shit. Your a Met fan. Your a Yankee hater. See I don't hate the Mets, I hate some of their fan base, They are the only fan base to talk shit, and never do anything on the field. The only fanbase to laugh at Yankee fans when we lost to the sox last year. Shit, atleast we were in it, the last 10 YEARS, I know you guys had that one great year, and then got your asses handed to you by the Yankees, and your friend Mariano Rivera.

sadly, I agree with most of that. the world series was heaven. the ensuing weeks-long wave of euphoria helped seal the deal for 2004 being one of the best years of my life.
but I officially got sick of the red sox just the other day, when in a three second span while paying at cvs, I saw johnny damon on the cover of entertainment weekly AND the tv guide. the excessive media coverage was dandy in the first few days of november. do we really need to equal it for the start of the season? with a team that I'm very skeptical of the reality of them even making to the postseason?
damon used to be my favorite sock (and that's well before everyone jumped on the johnny bandwagon solely cuz he decided to not cut his hair for a few months) but lately he's gotten pretty fucking obnoxious. he's going for 2005 curt schilling total over-exposure award. also, someone should let him know that no one is proud of his hot wife except for him.
EDIT: not to mention it's pathetic that he seems pretty proud of himself for cheating on his ex-wife. I give his current marriage 2-3 years.

Wow. I never thought you'd be the one to say something like that, Hench! I particularly like the idea of RSN. True - I live in SoCal, so I don't see the trendy mofos back in the NE that jump on the RSN bandwagon, but I love being able to go to a pub over here in downtown San Diego, walk in with my lucky Sox hat and have someone say "Welcome to RSN buddy!" That's a great feeling.
It's to be expected, though, that when teams win championships that people will jump on the wagon. It doesn't really help that the Pats happened to win the SB for the 3rd time in 4 years either this past season. Right now, Boston is the epicenter for sports fans. Everyone wishes thier team's city was Boston and it certainly has it's ups and downs. I'm going to suck it in and let it sit as long as it's gonna last, because it might not be like that forever. I'm proud (and extremely lucky) to be able to tell my kids that I saw the Red Sox and the Pats win thier respective championships within about four months of eachother.
And the Sports Guy's article kicked ass, as usual. That man is great. He an American Hero as far as I'm concerned.

He was signing autographs today at the barnes and noble 10 minutes from where I'm currently sitting. I had nothing to do at the time. I also had no desire to go meet him. Part of that is I wasn't sure if you had to buy his book to get in line to meet him, and I have no desire to buy the book, but that's beside the point. A year ago I would have gone anyway in hopes of just being able to shake his hand. My displeasure with the "new Johnny" made me completely indifferent. He's still an amazing ballplayer, but I must say I'm almost starting to regret the Damon shirt I bought the other week...at Marshall's...for 12 dollars. :lol

As I previously mentioned, Boston is home to two champions - the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Therefore, most people relate Boston to sports (I'm not saying everybody, just MOST people).

Yeah every morning when I get out of Penn Station, I am really in disbelief that I see tons of Suits wearing Sox hats, it amazes me, not because I am a Yankee fan, but for the simple fact of I am in NYC you know? There are two baseball teams in this city with huge fan bases. Half of them are Mets fans because they have to root for someone that beats the yankees. Its funny you say this...my brother has worked as a lawyer in downtown Boston for the last several years, and one of the things that struck him when he first got really involved in the Business world of Downtown Boston was how many professionals he would see in suits w/breifcases etc. wearing a ratty Sox hat. People would come into his building all the time wearing a Sox hat... Its like every grown man in Boston wears his Sox hat around, no matter how inappropriate the situation.

I think you're probably missing the ponit...
As I previously mentioned, Boston is home to two champions - the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Therefore, most people relate Boston to sports (I'm not saying everybody, just MOST people).
I can tell you what - I sure as hell don't want NYC being my team's city. I know of MANY people that equate NYC to "choke artist capitol of the world." Additionally, you're football teams are a weak joke, at best.
give it up man, the choke thing is useless and pathetic. We have too much greatness to think about just one season

Just curious - but what specifically did you mean by titles?
The point I was trying to convey was that why can't we call you the biggest choke artists in history if Yankees fans were able to get away with saying "1918" for 86 years?

I'm not convinced the guy was swiping at Sheffield... Yet. I'm certainly open to the possibility, but don't you usually look at the guy you're going to hit? The guy shouldn't have been over the wall at all, but it's possible the guy was yelling at the other fans hanging over the wall. The NESN announcers, Remy and Orsillo, initially condemned the man, essentially to death, but after watching the replays they weren't so sure it was a malicious act. What did you guys see on ESPN?

And let me thank you for giving me the :thumbsup on calling the '04 Yankees the biggest choke team in history. SI, ESPN, Fox, CBS, ABC all gave me the green light, but I was totally waiting on you. I bet NY fans are pleased with winning a bunch of pennants and championships. I would love to have all those titles, but I'm just as content being a Boston fan and having won last year's WS. Yeah, being a Yankees fan must be great - all those championships and victories. But I promise you it's more fun to hate them than to like them. It must be cool having immature pricks like A-Rod and Posada on there. Oh and Giambi's great! I mean shit, if the Giants can have a home run hitting steriod freak like Bonds, then why can't the Yankees have one too?! Gotta love them Yanks...

Ok, I do not believe the fan was trying to punch sheff, I believe he was drunk and trying to pick up the ball, grazed sheffs face, and interfered with the play, not like it mattered, they yanks still didnt score enough runs to come back. But the bottom line is, its interference, and fans need to stay out of the way. Sheff got pissed, maybe a lil too pissed, but fans have no right to be trying to pick up a baseball in play with a player trying to get the ball...It was right to boot the fan. I think fenway is an amazing park, I really do, but times have changed, that wall is a lil too low in my opinion.
Thank you for your rationality. Fan interference has no real deterrant, and I'd be 100% for arrest for so much as a fan touching a ball in live play. There's no defense for the fan being over the wall in that situation, and I never defended him. He didn't try to clock Sheffield, however, and Sheff's being flaunted as the "injured" party, here, and that's horseshit. On Baseball Tonight, they praised Sheffield for not hitting the guy. The only reason he didn't is the fact the guy backpedaled out of the way. Had Sheff landed that haymaker it'd be a totally different story this morning, and Sheff would have been no different than Ron Artest (he still isn't in my eyes).

11:30 after the replays were all over the place and impartial parties said he got beer poured on him is very convenient in the middle of your handicapped rant. Whether he was going for Sheff intentionally or not, he still struck a player while he was trying to field a ball. I've been in those seats in the corner (not for a Yankees game) and the fans aren't the most cordial. Not that that is an excuse for Sheff, but I'm sure that was part of the problem. Heckled all night then knocked in the head during the late stages of a then close game.

wow, the guy's OWN FIANCEE is sticking up for him...who woulda thunk it?
I love it that the only two people's opinions in the article are the woman who loves him who (from what I read into it) wasn't even AT the game...and a 16 year old girl. lordy I hate the herald.
keep in mind that this is a paper we used to get at my school for free until WE refused to accept it after they ran extremely graphic photos of the girl who was killed at the riots after the sox beat the yanks in the alcs. we now thankfully get the globe, and none of the spin like that BS article. sorry for the tangent...
as for the incident, I've had some time to sleep on it, and I still have to side with sheff. accident or not, he shouldn't have even been leaning over. you stay out of the playing area, period. he saw that ball coming and had more than enough time to back away. if that was me I certainly wouldn't have wanted to get in the way of sheff barreling towards me...he's not exactly known for being a shrinking violet. when I saw it happen watching the game all I could say was "what a scumbag!", but after seeing the whole deal, the scumbag was clearly the fan.
best game of the season so far. drama, tension, fireworks...and the boston win (against old man johnson no less). sweet.

We don't have to deal in hypotheticals. Jim Rice went into the crowd at Yankee Stadium after a fan stole his hat when it fell off when he dove for a ball down the left field line in the late 80s, but I'm sure Rice is a great guy.

i think both sides are at fault in the sheff/fan incident. the guy, and everyone around him, should not have been leaning over the wall... or atleast not trying to grab the ball. and i'm sure the fans in that section were anything but "classy fans" to sheff. topped off by the fact that it was late in the game and i'm sure those guys have had their share of beer. however... being a professional athlete, sheff should learn to just let it be. i think the only reason he "controlled himself" was because he still had a play to make. and once that play was made, there was already security all over the place.
all the same, fan interference is a problem everywhere. maybe more so at fenway 'cause of the low walls. but, if you remember in last year's ALCS... when bellhorn's supposed homer was dropped by the fan? in my eyes, if that person had NOT reached out their hands, i think that ball may have dropped either into matsui's glove or on the field.
shit happens, i guess.

Sheffield is full of it.
"I'm not sure if he punched me or not, it felt like it. You know, it felt like my lip was busted...It could have been worse if I didn't hold my composure."
Bullshit. You know if you got punched or not. He doesn't have a mark on him, much less a busted lip. Sheffield clearly swung his arms and made contact with the guy. Then he threw the ball and went back to the fence and started yelling; that's not holding your composure. He should have thrown the ball and kept moving towards the field, not back to the stands.

that right there shows he didn't hold his composure! he wasn't even SURE if the fan hit him. he just felt something (god forbid it be that his cheek hit the WALL on his way down) and assumed it was that guy. i mean... come ON sheff.

Mets fan take: The fan did not take a swing at sheffield, but sheffield was probably justified in thinking that he did (he was too busy chasing the ball). He probably didn't need to shove the guy, but it wasn't an entirely inexcusable response to the situation.
