the walk was great, all things considered. it was really rainy for the first 7 or 8 miles, which might be part of the reason why I'm so sick right now, but I'd say it was worth it.

the final total appears to be $875 or so, which is pretty incredible -- almost double my previous best fundraising efforts. thanks again for your support :)

What a FUCKED up move by Francona, how the fuck is someone dumb enough to bring in a fucking rookie having his major league debut with a man on second in a tied game. The pen wasnt even tired from the first game, bring in any one else except for the one having his major league debut that didnt pitch in the first one. Im sure even Mantei or Mike Myers could have done a better job even though they pitched earlier.

can someone please explain to me why renteria is STILL batting 6th? because I don't understand the logic behind it. he NEEDS to be batting 2nd, if not first. maybe the reason he's not doing so hot is because he's been sunk to the bottom of the fucking lineup. while sluggish trot bats second...argh! this is the most blatantly stupid move I can imagine. while I'm not saying I'm smarter than tito...come on! even an idiot would know enough to switch the two of them.

that was last year. this is most likely a blown save loss. by your reasoning, he can continue to lose games because he won it for us last year?

and exactly how many more games is he allowed to blow before I don't have to cut him any more slack?

sorry, but that's a stupid ass response. I say three words and you immediately jump on it with the "you won the world series" business. I was expressing displeasure with the fact that he blew a save...is that supposed to make me happy??

I wouldn't count them out yet. pedro lit a fire up under them, and beltran should do a solid job lifting up the offense. once the nationals remember they're the expos, it'll come down to you, atlanta, and FLA for the east, and FLA is hanging on dontrelle, beckett, and burnett

I'll be the first to admit Sox fans are some of the most critical of management and coaches, but Dale Sveum has single-handedly lost the Sox more games as a 3rd base coach than anybody I can remember. He's so stupid he gets people hurt (Ortiz last year). These are not difficult decisions for him to make, yet he's consistantly wrong, and he retains his job. Complete horseshit.

PLEASE, Theo, fire this man immediately. My god, he's worse than "send-'em-in kim" -- and I never thought I'd see that.

Rob
05-27-2005, 11:34 PM
The positive thing for this team is the fact that, despite having the worst managing and coaching in the majors, they somehow manage to win a game here and there. I am appalled by the people that have taken care of this team over the years... Francona is a deer in the headlights, Grady Little was fucking retarded, don't get me started on Kennedy... Anybody remember Butch fucking Hobson? The man didn't have a brain in his head. Even Joe Morgan couldn't decide whether to pull his dick out and whack it or to pull his 150 pitch pitcher out of the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth up by a run. The only curse this team has ever had was that of horrible managers/coaches, and that continues. The truly amazing thing was the fact they managed to win despite it.

zigbaldi
05-27-2005, 11:44 PM
i dont think its francona as much as bad pitching. Over the last 12 games the sox have only gotten 3 Quality Starts. Thats horrible and has nothing to do with francona.

Their Relief pitching is horrible as well. They rank at or near the bottom of every meaningful bullpen Statistic. Embree has got to go.

Rob
05-27-2005, 11:54 PM
Francona is still a bonehead. He didn't have anybody up when Embree started to struggle. He left Embree, a straight-arrow fastball pitcher, in against a dead fastball hitter in Steroid Boy. The results were predictable.

Time and time again, he puts in "defensive replacements" before the game is anywhere near in hand. Then, when the lead disappears, people like Payton, Vasquez, and (no longer, at least) McCarty come up in clutch situations.

Everybody's at a low point right now, and it just happens in baseball. This is where management becomes key. By taking advantage of strengths at the right time, you can maintain a lead you'd otherwise lose. Francona can't do this- he was hired for the sole reason to entice Schilling to come to the Sox. Ironically, Schilling's now on the DL, so we're now down a pitcher AND a manager.

Time and time again, he puts in "defensive replacements" before the game is anywhere near in hand. Then, when the lead disappears, people like Payton, Vasquez, and (no longer, at least) McCarty come up in clutch situations.

Embree inherited the 1 of the runners when he gave up the HR to Sheffield. the other womack hit a bloop single the opposite way. Before embree gave up the HR, he wasn't exactly getting shelled. Embree came in because it was a lefty(womack) Fancona went with the Lefty vs Lefty matchup. The only guys you can trust in the pen right now is Mantei and Timlin, and you dont bring those guys in because embree gave up a bloop single. Maybe its because Embree sucks, thats why he gave up the HR. Nothing to do with Embree.

Boston Bullpen Stats:

ERA - 5.26 Last in AL
K/9 - 5.87 Last in AL
K/BB - 1.82 10th in AL
WHIP - 1.46 11th in AL
BAA - .278 Last in AL
HR allowed 17 12th in AL
K's - 82 Last in AL
SLG - .452 Last in AL

See a trend here.

im not going to touch the Starters, you get the point

I see your point about the defensive replacements, but that hasn't been an issue lately. Besides the guys you listed dont really hurt the lineup right now. They only use payton against LHP, which is a good idea considering Trot sucks against LHP. Remember too, trot's leg is injured and will be injured for the rest of the season, so the less he plays the field the better. otherwise he will be gone by next month. Vasquez only has 43 AB's most of which came when Edger was hurt. Besides until the last few days they were producing about the same amount of offense. I hate McCarty as much as you do, so no arguement there, but again the way Millar has produced, there wasn't a huge drop-off any way.

The offense sucks as well. The only player who is producing more than expected is Tek.

Tek - Is doing great
Trot - is doing very good

Ortiz - is about what is expected.
Damon - ditto, although he could use a little more power

Manny - under-producing
Millar - SUCKS, i mean big time
Bellhorn - see Millar
Mueller - under producing
Edgar - also is under producing by alot, although has been good last few games.

Also we are leaving too many guys on base. tonight we had 11 hits and only scratched out 3 runs thats horrible.

Not to mention our defense. It sucks. that is a HUGE part of why they lost thursday's game.

Again the reason for the Sox losing ways is HORRIBLE pitching all-around, alot of injuries, the defense sucks, and the offense is just FLAT-OUT not producing. Terry has made some bone-headed moves, but to blame him for the Sox's slide is rediculous.

however Sveum(3rd base coach) has got to go. He did this last year, he sends guys around and they constantly get thrown out. he is a bone-head for sure

Rob
05-28-2005, 09:40 AM
I don't blame Francona soley (and it's "ridiculous," btw). However, when you see consistant bonehead moves by a pitcher during the season, don't think it'll change for the playoffs. Grady Little consistantly left his starters in too long all season- his boner with Pedro was just the most visible. He did the same thing with Burkett in one of the previous games.

Sveum could well have earned the Sox their loss yesterday. Playing "what if" with baseball is pretty dumb, but it's safe to say the outcome of the game would have been different had his arm stopped waving on its own (see: Bill Simmons Cartoon: "The Wave").

Steroid-Boy's ability to hit home runs doesn't help, either, but that's a whole different can of worms.

Theo gets a pardon, as we're coming off a WS win, for his move with Renteria, whose name should be legally changed to Diarhea. He has, what, 9 errors so far this season? He's left the equivalent of the population of his home country on base in 40 games so far. I'd rather have the lighter-hitting, defensively consistant, and clubhouse-proven Cabrerra for less money. I thought the rational for not spending money on Cabrera was Baby Ramirez sitting in the minors, and then he spends double on Diarhea? WTF?

well being that i'm from NC (no pro team), i don't get the pleasure of listening to a local station to hear the game broadcast. thus, the only thing i can listen to is the only station carrying the game nationally, espn. i'm a huge baseball fan and understand a lot about the game, so it's probably not really necessary for joe morgan to go on a 10 minute rant about why someone did this or that, or why he would or wouldn't have called that play an error. however, for the uninformed casual fan who may be interested in things of that nature, i think he makes some great observations. the reason i like jon miller is simply b/c he's goofy, he's funny to me. anyway, i can see i'm in the minority here so please forgive me for intruding on the SOX territory. it was a great win though, regardless of who you were listening to.

Just got back from Fenway South after witnessing a no less than fantastic game. My friend and I bounced around for the first inning or two and wound up about 15 to 20 rows back (second row behind the main walkway) directly across from home plate.

The most amusing part of the evening had to be the whole number switcheroo deal. All this season I'd been torn trying to decide whether to buy a Bellhorn or Renteria shirt. I've been supporting Rent all along through his struggles this year, as we all know he's always been a solid player throughout his whole career. When he smacked the grand slam Saturday it was settled, and I immediately set out and bought myself a Renteria #16 shirt.

After Wells gave up the two runs in the first I sat in my seat dejected, not sure whether I was more upset about the fact that Wells was certain to blow the game, or that I was about to suffer the humiliation of having his new number on my back for the rest of the night.

And then they both turned in gems.

I was making plans during the game to buy a new, correct shirt, but after such a great show last night, I think I'm gonna keep it. When everyone jumps on the Edgar bandwagon now that he's gotten hot, I can remember supporting him before that. Also it'll be an amusing story to tell (how many people find themselves at the ballpark in a shirt with one player's name and another's number?) and a nice little reminder of an awesome game.

The only part I'm upset about is Francona not letting Wells stay in to finish the game - with one runner on and up 7-2, you don't wanna get too careless, but you do have a margin of error. Wells could have used the confidence boost too, shutting up all the ex-fans who've booed him so mercilessly. I was happy to see him get a standing ovation from what was left of the Yankee crowd though (they started to rapidly dwindle as early as the 6th inning).

Oh, and Olerud is fantastic! Can he PLEASE be our new starting 1st baseman???????

All in all this was a great weekend for the Sox. They really needed it.

That's all for now. Can't believe I volunteered to make the drive back to Boston after the game, especially having woken up at 6:30 yesterday morning...I'm absolutely fried!

Normally I can see somebody's point of view on most issues, but Miller/Morgan the best in the business? Ouch!

My issues with Morgan: the man confidently contradicts himself mid-sentence and doesn't notice. He harps on insignificant trivia for 10 minutes. When he's wrong and realizes it, he changes his tune without so much as an acknowledgement. A perfect example from last night: Morgan maintained that Mussina was on his game, the Sox hitters were just so good that they were hitting the ball regardless. He mentioned this to Torre during the "in-game chat" with the manager. Torre diplomatically shot him down and said that Mussina was missing the snap on his curveball. Morgan immediately agreed and mentioned that again in almost every inning.

Miller is just a senile old man. He blathers on, playing devil's advocate to Morgan's idiocy. Good example from last night: after the interview with Francona- "Thank you to Jerry Francona of the New York Yankees." Well done, Miller. Take a nap.

With everything else that happened during the game last night, I completely forgot that the opening pitch was thrown out by Billy Crystal. What was just great about it though was that apparently Billy throws a mean slider...cause it got right by Posada!! I was in hysterics laughing, and took it as a good omen for the outcome of the game. Posada ran to the back wall to get it, tail between his legs, and threw it back to Billy who then threw a high fastball which the catcher actually managed to stand up and grab. Great stuff.

I was reading an article the other day, and perhaps some of you guy read it, but it quoted Theo as stating that "changes are going to be made" or something to that effect. Apparently, the Sox's pitching staff isn't doing their job so well. *ahem* Well no shit! Although, Wells, Timlin and Keith all did an excellent job in game three against the Reds, from what I gather. so not only was last night's game incredible (hall of fame club definitely gets a :thumbsup ), but today I happened to run into my favorite neighbor, Mr. Varitek himself :D

it was the first time I'd met him, and as we were both waiting for our sandwiches from the local deli I got a chance to talk to him for a few minutes, hearing all about his crazy week (daughter #3 was just born) and his impressions of our area (as he very recently moved in).

so nice to chat with tek. he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. :)

From Bill Simmons' latest mailbag article...

Q: Bill, i was just enjoying your latest mailbag, including the potential hits on dale sveum. i was at "game on" (a bar in Boston) after their games last week and saw sveum. needless to say, my friends and i were intoxicated and shouted out that we saw him. immediately, 5 of us started shouting and waving our arms in the classic "windmill" motion. He was looking right at us, and it was priceless.

from ESPN Insider:

Gabe Kapler
Sayonara Japan?
<Jun. 20> There is a good chance Gabe Kapler will return from Japan and rejoin the Red Sox, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. Craig Shipley, assistant to GM Theo Epstein, is in Japan scouting, and one front office executive says he is working on a deal for Kapler's return.

if that's true, I've gotta be at his first game back. how sweet that would be.

another point of interest:

Jason Schmidt
Red Sox inquire about Schmidt
<Jun. 20> The Red Sox have been looking for pitching and have talked to the Giants about Jason Schmidt, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. The Red Sox, however, do not like what they see from Schmidt, even in Friday night's shutout victory over the Tigers.

What a series this should be in Cleveland. Very similar records for both teams and each only a game out of the wildcard. Should be a very vocal crowd at Jacobs Field considering Wells is on the mound. This goes back to '98 when he was with the Yankees.

Not a problem, thanks. I just want a freaking explanation from somebody as to what exactly is going on here?? I almost wish this was a 4 game series so I could hope it gets split 2-2. But honestly, the way I see it, Philly needs these games more so they need to win. But they won't. Not the way they have been playing, and not the way their pitching has been. Boston will blow them up offensively.

PTI guys said that if Schilling to the bullpen works, perhaps as a closer, the Sox immediately become the best team in the majors. That seems like a stretch to me, but a bullpen with Timlin, Meyers, a healthy Foulke, and Schilling doesn't hurt...

He wouldn't have had too, Arroyo was in the dirt. If memory serves even Arroyo didn't blame A-Rod for his decision, I think he too was happy Rodriguez didn't just bowl him over! Agreed and francona sucks. Why timlin isnt in to start the 8th against posada, he leaves the constantly struggling embree in who nearly gave up runs in the 7th, to give up a double. Timlin should have been in then. And millar playing against right handed pitchers is crap, hes horrible this year, olerud versus all righties until millar starts hitting. And maybe olerud can stop muellers throw instead of millar letting it go through and the runs to score

First of all, I don't think that was a great situation to throw Curt into right away.

That was too much of a clutch situation for Curt to have pulled through. He's just not adjusted to being in that kind of position, yet. I know there will be people on ESPN tomorrow dogging Curt, but I didn't really expect too much out of him when I saw him on the mound. I thought Terry was out of his mind when he called Curt to the mound.

Agreed. But winning against the D-Rays is like beating up the little kid in the school yard to make yourself feel tough. They're about the only team we are guaranteed to beat in our division, unfortunately. Sometimes being in the AL East sucks wicked bad.

Grady Francona is doing it again. I don't care if we're up by 8 runs. We aren't even halfway through the game, and we scored the lion's share of our runs in one inning. If we can do it, so can tehy

:lol Either one is fitting, but if I were to say "Tony Little," most people would probably think I'm talking about one of the Godfather movies.
