Have we reached a point yet where it'd be legal (or possibly even encouraged) to hang Dale Sveum upside down until he dies from head rush?

Granted, it might not kill him, as it'll obviously be the first time in his life he has blood flow to his head.

But I can still track you down like a wild animal, beat you into submission and force you to admit that the Yankees are not, indeed, America's team.

Just kidding - I would never track you down and beat you into submission. But I would force you to admit the Yankees aren't America's team. ;)

Is anyone else getting really excited about our current crop of hot prospects? I'm talking about guys like Papelbon, Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez, Manny Delcarmen, Lester, Kelley Shoppach, etc...I can't remember the last time I heard so much talk about the farm system on the local sports radio station and in the papers, and all these players are being touted as "can't-miss."

now I'm not going to be completely naive here -- obviously success in the minors does not always translate into success in the big leagues, but for as long as I remember, the sox had an extremely thin farm system, and seeing all of these promising players is giving me hope for the future. home-grown talent is exactly what this franchise needs -- and would do wonders for our payroll flexibility.

It's pleasant to hear that our farm system is doing...better to say the least. Because I'm way the over here, I don't pay much attention to the Paw Sawx :shrug I know, I should pay closer attention, but it's great to hear. Our payroll is staggering, to say the least. We really need to do something about that. We have several prosepects, and we may be putting them up on the trading block soon for better pitching. It's comforting to know that we have some young talent. Young talent is sorely underrated these days.

come on, if you're going to insult us, at least put a little though into it. there's plenty to make fun of: our left fielder who runs inside the wall for bathroom breaks, the starting first baseman with no extra base hits, a third base coach with a mysterious circular arm twitch, etc. Seriously, with this team you can do better that "sox suck" (though the standings would contradict that argument :) )

good point. not the sox bashing, but the rep. it's so nice to be able to actually come on here and express a negative opinion (god forbid!) without being called a troll.

can't believe they moved my baby into this wasteland forum! I guess I should be proud something I created has made it this far?

as for the sox, I don't know. I was there last thursday and sunday for disheartening losses to the yanks. I've never felt so much excitement at fenway than when schill came outta the bullpen for the first time. but I knew he was gonna blow it.

and then sunday, when the bases were juiced and francona let cora bat...I was furious.

I don't know about him. yeah he managed to win a world series, but when you've got a good team to begin with...

davehead34
07-24-2005, 03:50 PM
I can't imagine how exciting it would be to have been at the game when Schill came in to relieve. That must've been pretty crazy. I was watching the game from my computer, and I was pacing around my room like a mad man.

I agree with you, Hench. "Grady Francona" has been making some questionable decisions lately. We have to play to win all the time. We know our strengths, and our weaknesses. We MUST utilze what we have, instead of placing inordinate amounts of faith on relative unknowns who have yet to prove themselves. Things are too close in our division right now, and we certainly cannot afford many losses spurred by mangement risks. It's acceptable to lose games during the first few months of the season when everyone is still getting situated, but right now we must play like World Series champions.

:thumbsup Thanks for the update! My MLBTV.com connection is kinda screwy right now, so I can't watch the game :( I'm going to be honest - I didn't expect us to do so well against Chicago. If we win today, that will be HUGE. We would have bested three out of four of their starting pitchers. To beat the ChiSox 3/4 would be amazing! That, in itself, would definitely warrant instant respect from the MLB community.

well not to burst your bubble but we just gave up two runs, so it looks like we're gonna have to come from behind yet again. But I agree with you that our performance against the white sox has been amazing and a really good boost for our team. Now i'm just hoping we can end on a good note.

davehead34
07-24-2005, 05:04 PM
Hmmm...it wouldn't surprise me if we had a high-scoring game today. The heat's supposed to on high this weekend in Chicago area. Hopefully it doesn't play a determining factor in our performance today.

I wish I could move to Boston - it's by far my favorite city. Right now I'm stuck in San Diego :D Not bad, I know, but it's not home (RI).

cookiegirl106
07-24-2005, 05:15 PM
The pain continues in the third, we don't do shit and they score another run. But even though the game isn't going our way I have to say I'm enjoying watching Carl Everett play. He may have been a pain in Boston but I always thought he was fun and he had one hell of a swing.

Boston's gonna be great, but I wouldn't mind moving to SD some time too. Oh and although I'm not from RI I spend a lot of time there and even it's better than CT. I live an hour from NYC and the area is completely populated with Yankee fans who enjoy making my life a living hell. I even dated one for awhile but I quickly vowed to never do that again.

You're right - a split with the best team in baseball isn't bad. I'm happy to settle for that.

I have two rules when it comes to dating. They are as follows:

1. Never date a chick who likes the Yankees.

2. Never date a chick with an adam's apple, no matter what.

cookiegirl106
07-25-2005, 12:17 AM
Hahaha good rules!! My three...

1. No Yankees fans, after that disaster.

2. No guys who enjoy listening to marc anthony.

3. No guys with fake teeth, unless it's related to a sports injury, but that's still kinda weird.

Good luck to Wells tomorrow.

as for the dating thing, I think I've been with more yankee fans than red sox fans in the past few years. I'd rather be with a girl who likes the yanks than a girl who doesn't like baseball at all. I met a chick a week after the world series win, and she was cool enough, but her lack of interest in baseball actually killed it for me.

I remember meeting her for a date a few days before christmas...told her my day had been a roller coaster (as it was the day pedro signed with the mets, and I'd been following it all afternoon) to which she responded "me too!" I asked her how hers had been so crazy to which she said something along the lines of she was studying for multiple finals, writing multiple papers, gotten one paper in a few minutes too late and gotten fucked over by the teacher, a bunch of stressful shit. then she adds "oh yeah, and my best friend from home tried to kill herself. how was your day a roller coaster?"

I go "uhh...pedro went to the mets?" weakly, and looked up at fenway, as we happen to be passing by it at that moment.

"oh." she said. "who's pedro?"

I still don't think I could ever date a Yankee fan. I fucking can't stand those souless bastards. Just the other day, I was at the beach with my Sox hat on (of course) and some prick fucking Yankee fan goes "Hey - go back to BAAAWSTON!" I'm like "Hey - how the fuck does second place taste you dumb fuck!? By the way, we're in San Diego. How the hell are you going to tell me to go back to Boston? God, some Yankee fans make me wicked pissed off. I seriously almost fuckin punched this tool in his throat.

I just can't believe that we lost to TB in 10 innings with Curt closing. That's pathetic. And unfortunately I had a Yankee fan call and tell me the scores. Yankees didn't even play and I still go shit. My biggest problem with Yankee fans are they usually don't even really like baseball, they just figure if they're gonna be a fan they might as well go for the dynasty. Most of them can't even name their starters. Soooo frustrating.

True, but not too surprising though given who we started the year with. The really puzzling thing is how no one in the division has taken advantage of this too much at all. All the injuries, mediocrity, inconsistancy, and general misery imaginable in our starting rotation and we're only a game out!

Least they beat the O's tonight. They're just in an awful slump right now and loosing Rogers only compounds it. Soriano's killing the ball though. I think they're toast myself, they haven't got a prayer in that division anymore. Oakland should cool off, they're just not that good. Meanwhile Anaheim is probably the best all around team in the AL right now. Just look at their pitching numbers and you'll be floored. Angels win that division by about ten to fifteen games I'm guessing!

This is another example of gross mismanagment by Grady Francona. Bradford, now Meyers? What the fuck? They got rid of Halama today and decided Gonzales was the long reliever. He's spent 2 arms in 2 innings and there are potentially 4 or 5 more to go. You put in your fucking long reliever and save your specialty arms until the late innings when you need to match up. This is disgusting. What the fuck is this man doing managing a major league team?

I'll never stop saying this- we won DESPITE his mismanagement last year. So far, he's lost us 6-8 games on bonehead moves.

Oh, and why the fuck does our slamming DH need a day off? Why the fuck does he put in both catchers to start the game? Give me a break- Francona is fucking retarded- you'd think he just took the shot to the head. At least he'd have an excuse.

I think he took it off the side of the head, just behind the ear, which could have been more dangerous than the face. The side of the head is definitely serious brain damage, and serious risk of neck/spinal chord injury. He's very lucky he didn't take it on the temple...scary to think about it but that could have been death.....Thank God it wasn't worse.

http://espn-i.starwave.com/media/mlb/2000/0908/photo/a_florie_i.jpg

http://images.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/photos/21florie5.jpg

When Ryan Thompson's line drive struck Boston reliever Bryce Florie's right eye Sept. 8, the New York Yankees' Thompson said it made a shattering noise that sounded like a baseball hitting glass.

Thompson's liner broke Florie's eye socket in three places and his nose in one. Florie's chances of getting all his vision back are bleak; Red Sox team doctor Bill Morgan said Florie injured his right eyeball significantly.

Florie can't see anything out of his hurt eye, and he might not ever see well enough to pitch again. Still, his worst damage may not even be physical.

(he would be well enough to pitch again, but only briefly -- I was at his first game back from the injury and we gave him as loud an ovation as I've ever heard at Fenway...but he never was the same pitcher again :( )

So, Trot goes on the DL. Manny has a scheduled day off. Francona asks Manny if he'll be available, seeing as how the team's down a player now.

Nope. Manny needs his day off from all that light jogging, misplaying balls in left field, not running out ground balls, and not being a good teammate.

Who the fuck runs this team?

Manny's actions the other night can be characterized as "less than honorable;" however, he does provide us with a much needed run support. Whether we like it or not, we need Manny.

I listen to WEEI atleast 5 hours a day while I'm at work (I deliver pizzas) and they are absolutely tearing manny apart for his shinanigans... there could be some interesting and beneficial trades that come out of it: specifically if we picked up a great second baseman and a power hitting outfielder, the numbers between two players would equal or exceed manny and bellhorn's contribution overall

But some of you didn't seem to mind, especially when he was holding that sign "Jeter is golfing right now".(Which I can understand why u guys didn't mind) Another excuse was "thats just Manny being Manny" "He is in his own world." To be honest I wouldn't care how many Rbi's he has, if he has that type of attitude I would want him off my team. But how many players would want to get out of playing for a team that has had many playoff experiences, won the WS last year in an incredible fashion, and currently in first place? I mean does he want to be on the Mets that bad? He is a selfish player, always was, always will be. Complete bonehead deal. Huff ain't bad, but Cameron is complete shit. There's also an assumption that Ortiz will be the same hitter w/o Manny behind him, and that won't happen- Ortiz gets pitches to hit thanks to Ramirez behind him.

I'm sick and tired of spoiled, whiney ballplayers. The Mets sure will regret it when Manny needs every-other day off to rest his sore-from-light-jogging body.

I actually got bitched out during game 3 of the world series by a girl I'd just met that night for having the audacity to say "manny sucks." we were watching and he came up and I said that instinctively, because it's a view I've had for a while. once he said he wanted to be a yankee I figured fuck him, let him go, we don't need him. the girl actually started cussing me out because I said a player sucks. wow. people have such strong feelings for "divot" ramirez. he's an amazing one tool player, but that's still 4 short of a toolbox. I pray they can unload his contract on SOMEONE before the deadline passes sunday...

ALSO: ESPN reports that he was loudly booed at fenway tonight by the same fans who would have gladly taken a bullet for him 2 days ago. why not the first or even SECOND time he asked to be traded? why not the time when he said he wanted to be a YANKEE?? their favorite player longing to go to the most hated enemy. Manny out of the lineup.

If Manny has, indeed, been traded, I'm just about out of faith in Red Sox management (meaning Francona and his coaches). Manny is a spoiled child, earning 20 million dollars to play a GAME, and even then, he can't play regularly. He whines and complains, drags his ass, loafs, and is an all-around piss-poor teammate. It'd be very simple from a management standpoint to put a fucking foot down and demand the best from him. Think Torre would have stood for this?

Ortiz is going to become average, at best, if this goes through. Without Manny protecting him in the lineup, he doesn't have a prayer.

And you know the spoiled bitch will be incredible for at least a year (until he wants to be traded back). Just look at Pedro- it seems to be a recurring theme with players and their attitudes.

I've always loved Manny and even through this whole ordeal I had to give him the benefit of the doubt. Over the last week there have been a lot of articles written on redsox.com that contradict a lot of what was being said in the media. I don't belive that Manny ever really wanted to leave Boston. He's very happy there and the team is happy with him. Plus, there's no way he could ever be traded cause no one else will pay his insane salary. But I don't think that we can say that Manny doesn't do his job because he certainly delievers whenever we need him. Take for example, Sunday night. He came in and did exactly what we needed him to do even with all the hype. I was very excited to see him on the bench ready to play for the entire game. I think he looked happy and that's enough for me. As long as he's happy to be in Boston he'll play 100% and do everything that we need him too. I think the last few months of this season will be the best months of his season. I'm going to Thursday's game and I'm excited to see him play again.

So apparently I spoke too soon when I said I wanted to see Manny play tomorrow cause now he's "day to day" after running into Renteria. Apparently our players have a really hard time communicating with each other on the field cause this whole running into each other happens waaayyy too often. I hope Manny's back in the game soon cause he doesn't have time to sit on the bench again.

Rob

I'd trade him for a hole in the head at this point. Theo gets a pass as he's made more good moves than bad, but the signing of Rentaria was fucking retarded. You need to look at some specialized numbers to see it- aside from his astounding error total, his batting averages with 2 outs and runners on is below .150 last I checked. He's worthless in pressure situations and an insecure headcase to boot.

Those straws(besides embree, who I hate) have made a 5.5 game lead dwindle down to 1.5 with 6 head to head games in a matter of weeks. Its not like Bellhorn is going to play much, I dont think he is good, it is just a move to have a veteran with experience(Which I witnessed first hand in last years playoffs) over Felix Escalona heading torwards a playoff run..Who knows, but yes the yanks have been taking off the scrap heap, but I hand it to Cashman, for not trying to make a bigger move and trade way Wang, Cano. And managing to make the team better with the additions of all these scrap heap players. Those shitty moves for Chacon, Leiter, Aaron Small have kept this team in the race..I just hope they continue to do so. Well, heres a cheers for a great ending to a very strange season.

He might have been lucky, but HE made the moves, and those moves have them in a playoff position, with a possibility of winning the division. You seem very confident that you guys are a lock to win it. Yeah you guys might be the favorites. But I know from past experiences, that anything can happen when these two teams play. The only team that is a lock for the playoffs are the white sox, not the yanks, red sox, angels, a's, or Indians. They are all very very tight in the standings. So don't hold your breathe for too long either. Plus my comments, were rehashing something I read that your boy genius GM theo said, Cash made good moves to improve his team without giving up Wang and Cano. I was not here to start some bs, just talking. Eventhough most red sox fans hate yankees fans, for the past 3 years I have been one of the coolest yanks fans, with major respect to you guys, and there are a few people who post frequently in this thread that can back that up. Although Steinbrenner is my mortal enemy, he's not doing anything wrong. This country is built on money. Baseball is America's pasttime. To be greedy and spend lots of money to advance a team in baseball is about as American as you can get, I suppose. I'm sure that if we had the money, we'd try to out bid them at every turn, and I'd support it, too. If I ever saw Steinbrenner, though, I would definitely punch him in the throat.

I don't even think it's greed... he's trying to put the highest quality product on the field that he can. If anyone is greedy here, it is the players, by not allowing the salary cap through the union. The owners that ARE greedy are the ones that could spend more money on payroll and maintain reasonable profitability but don't because they want to pocket it.

I agree with that to a certain extent. Steinbrenner is greedy, IMHO. While he does want the best quality product on the field, and that is in the team's best interest, he's not very flexible and understanding. If you don't perform to his level of expectation - BAM! You're cut! Just like that. Either that or you're sent to the Clippers. There is a certain element of greed in Steinbrenner.

some people in the yanks thread were complaining about the red sox payroll and how schilling and wake would get rocked this weekend... i did some quick stats and wrote this up to shut them up, but decided to be nice and post it here instead:

-----------------------------

as a sox fan, i'm not trying to intrude, but i do want to point a few things out. i don't think any team paying over 100 million can complain using the payroll schtick..

but let's not forget how MUCH more the yanks are paying... 85 million more than the next team, the sox at $123... if we DOUBLED our salary we'd be closer to the yanks payroll than we are now. i think that really puts it in perspective. really, staggering numbers.

i wouldn't call schilling a remnant of his former self... in his last 3 starts(21.2 innings total), he has 8 runs, 6 walks, 16 strikeouts, and an era for those 3 starts of 3.54--compared to mussina who has 13.1 innings, 12 runs, 6 walks, 10 strikeouts, for an era of 9.85 for his last 3 starts.

let us also note that mussina has given up 16 runs this year to the sox in 20 innings.

i'm not too worried about schilling or wake.

i think sunday will be a great game.

:thumbsup Interesting. I hadn't realized that Schill has done so well in the past three games. I was actually looking at his stats earlier today and his ERA isn't staggering (lingering around 5.60's?); however, he's won seven and lost eight :shrug I'm sure you know that baseball is all about streaks, though, and if Schill's on a role, it'll be tough to stop him! Streaks are what the Sox do best.

I'd be interested in seeing some stats on check-swing appeals/requests. Posada is such a little bitch- he points down the line whenever somebody moves their bat- it's ridiculous. At least last night's ump (who wasa "Look at me!" bitch drawing out his strike calls) ignored Posada's ludicrous requests.
