I thought this would be a good day to finally start our own thread...they passed the Phillies last night for 1st place! woohoo! I know there is a long way to go, but nobody thought they would be doing this well back in April! It's going to be a fun second half of the season :D

i love that city too. i've only been to one game in Atlanta, but i go every year when they play the dodgers and i saw them up in SF last year too.

I decided to start our own thread cuz the phillies thread people kept getting mad when i'd go in there to talk about the Braves, so now we have our own thread! :D

It finally happened!...a Braves appreciation thread! Now I don't feel like I have to constantly post shit in the Phillies thread. :bounce

Whatever ends up happening, you can't deny that Bobby Cox has done a hell of a job this year (like he does every year). For 13 straight years, he's taken a different group of guys (many times no-name guys) and won. This year, just like the last 2 or 3 years, no one gave the Braves a chance. Seriously, Adam Laroche (or however you spell it)? Charles Thomas? Dewayne Wise? Nick Green? 45-year-old Grandpa Franco? BUT THEY STILL WIN.

The Phillies could turn into the Yankees and spend billions...it wouldn't matter. The Braves will still be right there because WE KNOW HOW TO WIN. We you win 12 straight, winning almost becomes a reflex.

yeah braves!

good to see them back in their righful position--on top. Long season left, but winning this year would be the most amazing yet. Every year they get further "depleted" of talent, and yet pull it off. Bobby Cox really does know how to get a bunch of kids to play together doesn't he?

The Phillies on the other hand have all the talent in the world and can't crack an egg ;)

This is going to be a good series this weekend with the Cards.
I think I'm going sunday

So who does Ramirez replace if/when he comes back to the rotation? All 5 of our guys are pitching lights-out right now. I watched Ramirez's rehab assigment in Greenville on Wednesday. He looked smooth and effortless. I say one more week or two and he's ready. Does Thompson take a seat?
my guess is Tompson probably, who'd a thought the pitchers they have would be doing so good?!?

this series this weekend will be interesting, should be a good test for them. ATL seems to have better pitching then the cards though

i know i only did that to estrada for dropping the ball and boy did he ever redeem himself with that homer!! :D I'm surprised with the Pitchers this year as well, but hey not everyone can be Smoltz, Glavine, and Maddux. They're doing awesome, props to "Rockin Leo" and the pitchers

did you see the link to the article i posted? i think it's on the page before this one...it's about what an amazing month Ortiz, Wright, and Hampton had in July. They actually did top S, G, and M...amazingly...although nothing will ever top their run

I doubt Thomson gets benched. If anyone, Paul Byrd is pitching the worst out of all of them. He's the only pitcher whose ERA and WHIP have gone up since the All-Star break. I'd like to see a rotation consist of Ortiz, Hampton, Wright, Thomson, Ramirez. It'll be interesting to see how Leo and Bobby work it out.

I think so as well. But right now, if you're going with the hot arm (or leaving the cold arm), it's gotta be Thomson for the time being. Byrd is a better pitcher - look at his year in 2002. Granted a 3.90 ERA is nothing to drool over, but 33 starts and going 17-11 isn't too bad for a Royals team that sucked pretty hardcore that year. I'm just happy to get Horacio and his wonderful left arm back now.

Cards won the series.... just like they're going to win the world series with their rediculous offense, defense, and usually solid pitching. (Minus a morris start or two)

P.S. Marquis is the reason cards lost saturday, he is usually the top 3 of stl's pitchers, but he got all excited facing his old team.

it amazes me that Marquis has been decent this year....he absolutely sucked as a brave, i was so happy when they traded him....don't expect him to stay good....he started out great as a brave nad then just kept going further and further downhill

I totally agree there, I was surpised at his doing well also.
The clip they showed was from game six, when he hit the homer and everyone was going crazzzzzzzzzzy!! I'm surprised we played so poorly we are usually one of the few teams to do good against the Cards.

the cards are on a completely different level than any other team in the league, except MAYBE the Yankees.

And Marquis didn't progress under your pitching coach because they wanted him to be a strikeout pitcher, he's a groundball pitcher, that's why he's done so good. He averages only like 2 K's a game. Carpenter is still the best pitcher on the staff, and I might take Woody lately over marquis, but he's still solid.

that makes no sense....most of the braves pitchers over the years have not been strike out pitchers. Mazzone is the best pitching coach, i doubt it had anything to do with they way they "wanted" him to pitch.

I got a feeling that my braves will show your cards what's up in the playoffs. usually, the braves kick ass during the regular season and then suck it up in the playoffs. this year (when nobody thought they would do aaaaaannnything) they turned out to be pretty damn good. so it would only make since that they would kick ass in the playoffs, just out of shear determination. so.... i guess we'll see you in october.

I was just implying that they add more excitement to the game IMO. Believe me, I'm glad Bonds isn't in also, but he is very fun to watch. And I didn't know that about Chipper. (Insert Hooters' waitress joke here). Congrats indeed.

Truth is, I'd be very surprised if the Giants came out of Atlanta with a split, especially with Bonds out of the line up.

Screw Moneyball, where's Schuerholz' book? I don't know he has done it year after year. Nick Green? J.D. Drew? JULIO FRANCO???

good coaching. Bobby Cox is amazing! Charles Thomas?? yeah, all these rookies, well, and Julio are doing such a good job this year. They picked it up when Chipper and Marcus were out. i love watching nonames just take over like that. :thumbsup
