Everything Phish goes here. I noticed the recent upsurge of Phish topics, so, as was asked in a locked Phish topic, here's the Phish Discussion thread. Talk away!

theres not any other phish threads for real? but if we have to discuss them i guess i will. sad to see them quitting but with all the speculations of dave/trey/tim i say go for it:)

Good band. Never saw them live, but I like some of their records, including a few of the live discs. Trey isn't the songwriter that Dave is, but incredibly talented musicians.

Maybe its because Trey doesn't write the words, he writes the notes, something he is much better then Dave at.

Even taking that into consideration, I generally like the notes Dave writes better, to be honest. Just a personal preference.

pretty recently i started taking more of an interest in Phish, and JUST MY LUCK - they're done after this tour.
kinda like what happened when i really got into Rage - i had like a few of their singles, but never really got into all their stuff until right about the time they split up. :BANG
any suggestions of Phish studio albums and/or live shows i should start with?

Yeah pretty much. I don't know how to defend myself other than just simply saying that I like the music Dave composes better than Trey. Maybe it's a human failing of mine, but I'm not going to pretend that it isn't true, you know?

True, true. Everyone has their likes and dislikes.
Yeah, I mean, even my taste in Dave songs seems to deviate from the norm. My favorites are #41 and Two Step and Warehouse, which is pretty common, but I could hear Billies, WWYS, Ants, and Too Much at every show and be totally happy. Can't explain it more than that the songs just appeal to me.
But that's why everyone is different.

The 8-26-89 version of You Enjoy Myself is really something, I love it.
And the studio version of Llama when he goes "taboot" in a real deep voice, that makes me laugh everytime

Whoops, I topped the simulcast thread before seeing this, oh well.
edit: Okay, I have a problem making decisions for myself, so answer this. If you had a friend that went with you to almost every concert you see, and that friend couldn't make it to the 14th simulcast because of her little brother's bday party (which you were invited to and would be skipping/partially attending due to simulcast), would you pass it up and go to her party, being a good friend, or would you be a bad friend and go to the movie? I already know what I'm going to do, just want to see if I'm the only person who'd skip the movie. I'm a bad friend for even thinking about going, but I can't help it :(

I have seen Phish a few times in the past, including once this summer, but my sisiter (firedancer430 on this board) has never had the privilage of seeing Phish. I am trying very hard to find a pair of tickets, even lawn, so that I can get her to her first and last phish show ever.
If anyone can help me out with a pair or even a single ticket for that fact, either post here or email me at

If they do it would really piss me off, after all the money I've spent and arrangements I've made just to see them one last time I'd feel betrayed.

Is that from LivePhish 11? If so, I don't like that Reba as much as most other ones I've heard. It's smooth flowing and chill, but I tend to like 98 rebas better.

just got back in.... the first set was pure heaven, just smokin. second set had it's ups and downs. but a david bowie encore? i was floored when they started it, i was sure it was just gonna be a tease or they would abort and go into something else, but sure enough we got a rocking and psychadelic as always bowie.
highlight of the night for me, however, had to be contact. one of my favs and a song i was starting to think i'd never hear live.
ill give a longer review later maybe but now im going to bed so i can wake up and get ready for coventry.

Here's a prayer to Icculus for the 50,000 w00ks still in traffic, apparently 20,000 are in or so, the rain keeps coming down, the mud's getting worse, and the buildup is only going to get worse before tomorrow night.

My father just called me from Coventry. He's up there selling water to benefit the non-profit he works for. He said it's a complete disaster! He left last night cause vendors had to get there a little bit earlier, and by now the rain has gotten to the point where it can't be absorbed into the earth anymore. Apparently they've got tractors that are towing RV's into the middle of some surrounding fields and the RV's are just sinking. He's been walking around and talking to people mainly... said he walked by the VIP "phish and friends" camping area, where there are some fancy RV's set up for the band and such. Said there were around 25,000 in so far, but that's nothing compared to the hours and hours of backed up traffic throughout the state. It sounds like he's having quite the adventure! If you're going, buy water from C.I.D.E.R. and support my dad and the elderly people of Vermont! :) I'll post more if calls with more stories.

The prayers to Icculus did not work, as Coventry is closed to everyone not through the gates yet (2/3rds of all tickets). They're still playing as of now, but everyone is being turned away and turned around.
August 14, 2004 - Coventry, VT - As a direct result of the severe weather
conditions and serious flooding encountered over the past few days, the
Vermont State Police and concert organizers, in the interest of public
safety, have been forced to limit entry in to the COVENTRY festival this
weekend. After exploring all possible options, Police and organizers have
concluded that there is no conceivable way to park the remaining vehicles on
or in the near vicinity of the concert site, due to the conditions of the
grounds as a direct result of the persistent and torrential rains over the
past several days.
Effective immediately, all vehicles bound for the concert site not already
off Interstate 91 will be turned around and denied entrance to the festival.
In addition, roadblocks at additional points of entry have been set up and
State Police will be ensuring that people can turn around in a safe and
efficient manner.
All ticket holders denied entry to the site will be granted a full refund.
Ticket refunds will be refunded directly to credit card holders who have
purchased tickets from Ticketmaster and from Phish's online ticketing
system. Further details on refunds will be announced in the coming days.
While Phish deeply regrets having to take this action, it is necessary to
protect fans as well as residents of the greater Coventry area.

08-14-2004, 12:27 PM
This is turning in to such a mess. There is a problem with the full ticket refund policy. What if someone bought tix from phish and then sold them on ebay for 400 bucks. That person would then receive the full refund and the ebay person will be screwed. Not to mention the question of what they are going to do with the people that were turned away. Can you imagine how pissed you would be going up there and being turned away to find out a select few (24+ thousand of them) have been allowed to watch the show while you drive home. I think it will be interesting to see what happens in the next few hours/ days.
Chaykak
08-14-2004, 12:47 PM
Supposedly they're going to find a way to 'make it up to the fans' that didn't get in... outside of another concert, I don't see how you could do that :/ And I sure as hell hope the Simulcasts work alright... better chance of that tomorrow anyway. Damn.

here's a post from phantasytour. this guy just talked to a buddy of his that is there...
He said what people are doing that got turned away is heading back South, then back up North on a different route, then setting up camp in people's yards, farms, side of the road, and hiking 3-5 miles to the festival.
He said that nobody is going home, everyone is hiking in.

I just got home from the simulcast and it was amazing. The energy was very apparent the first two sets and then the third was a little more mellow but still amazing. The Harry Hood was great even with the interruption. The David Bowie, Free, and Antelope all were highlights. A friend of mine said his brother was turned away this morning and then ditched his car somewhere on the highway and walked fifteen miles into the venue. After tonight and looking at tomorrow it seems definitely worth it.

theater vibe is pretty much the vibe coming outta the guys in the band. if they get into it, the theater gets into it. we rocked pretty hard during the first set, and by set III, we were all tired as hell. btw, there weren't that many people in the theater, so yeah, you can hear and see EVERYTHING. Well, I got back to Indiana at 6 o'clock this morning. We drove over 20 hours to get to Coventry just to be told that we had to go home. You can't blame the band though. It was just a freak thing. We were near the front of the line when we were told that they were going to have to turn people away, which really sucked. We were going to park on I-91 and walk to the gates, but we were told that our car would be towed. We also saw the police break into another car in order to tow it, so we decided it wasn't worth it. Mike said on the radio that the band would refund money for tickets, and that they were trying to come up with something else for the fans that didn't get in. I'm not expecting another show, but who knows what they'll do. Phish has always been good to their fans, and I'm sure they feel just as bad as the fans do about the whole situation. Yeah well, I got to go to Canada which was a fun experience, and even though we didn't get in I'm not too upset. We still love you Phish.

No way on the full gamehenge.
I'll predict an appearence of the song Icculus. We'll get a forbin's accent->mockingbird most likely. Could be a long Mikes song->Weekapaug with a bunch of segues in between.

Just got done speaking with my friend dan. He had tickets to both nights and got turned away. He was pretty sad but he's making the best of it. He's going to New York and Boston and just see the sights. I hope the band plays another show....

looks like those that turned around and went home weren't too many.
i bet they are pissed that they left now, when everyone else stayed:
"The music resumed at Phish's last concert Sunday night. Police estimate that between 65,000 to 68,000 people are attending the festival, an indication that not many heeded the request Saturday to turn back."

Sure, listening to the internet stream, it may sound dissapointing, but let me tell you, I was at the simulcast, and it was just... words cannot describe. So fucking emotional. I'm a late newcomer to Phish, but by the middle of the third set I was crying. And I don't cry often. The emotion they were playing with was just unreal.
During DWD, Trey picked up a couple of glowsticks and played the guitar with them. Page just broke down crying after the first line of Wading, and Trey had to start it back up for him. And during the end jam to Ghost, he held the guitar in front of him and did some weird feedback stuff while waving it around. I'm sure it sounded like shit on the webcast, but watching it it was just amazing.
And they could not have picked a more appropriate song to end with. "Please me have no regrets". Sure, Trey flubbed the With jam, but I didn't give a damn. If you weren't there or at the simulcast, you just can't judge this show. You had to have seen the way they were playing. I'm still having goosebumps. Seeing Trey walk off the stage after the show, he was crying, they were all hugging. It was a perfect ending.

If anyone says that was a bad show, they're full of shit. That second set was KILLER. Damnnnnnn. Our WHOLE theater broke out into a HUGE glowstick war during DWD. Then Wading, which, though I usually don't like it, gave me horrible goosebumps.
