I think that most saxophonists just use an instrument mic that goes into the mixing board directly into the PA. If you're going to use a clip on mic, then you'll have to have a preamp too. Everytime I've plugged into a guitar amp, it's sounded somewhat tinny. A bass amp takes out too much of the high end.

A piano amp is definatly what you want to do if you don't have a PA to use. Piano amps are made for all ranges of the piano, therefore would work for all instruments. That's also why they are more expensive.
