stacking chinas

I have my chinas stacked just like Carter does. I currently have a 18" Zildjian Oriental China Trash stacked on top of an 18" Paiste China. I am going to get a 20 or 22" soon so I wont have 2 18"'s stacked on top of each other..........but my question is how does stacking them this close affect their sound? I read that the way Carter has his stacked makes them sound trashier? Is this so and how is it that stacking them like this makes them sound better?

How close are they stacked? (inch wise) cause from my experience...the closer like Carter says...the "Trashier sounding" (cause they smack into each other.)
and the further would make it "lighter sounding" so to speak. So all I can say is adapt it (The stacking formation) to your "style" just experiment. (Theres no right way or wrong.)
