The other day i was playing guitar when my dad walked in. Now he doens't really like any type of music at all and he sat down and listened to me jamming. So i started playing Lie In Our Graves and he loved it... which is very suprising. So im wondering what songs do u play to impress people?:monkey

WWYS is a good one because just about everyone knows it.
I usually play The Stone if I'm at an open mic and there is someone there that needs a reality check.
I also played the Stone at this talent show thing at my work and won 1st place.

i know its a DMB website, but it seems like everyone hear plays DMB on guitar very often.
i dont know, maybe its just me, but DMB songs dont sound that great with just a guitar. now some do, dont get me wrong, and dave solo shows are good but a lot of that has to do with his voice

blasphemy!
Anyways, I play LIOG and billies...well try to. Sweet Home Alabama's a good one, wonderwall. Ehh, anything will impress people if they know the song and you're good.

I like to whip out a little "Blackbird" by Beatles or "Over the Hills and Far Away" by Led Zeppelin. For Dave songs, I pick either "The Stone" or "So Much To Say"..

I agree with you. That's why I'm always confused when people post an entire song (for example, The Stone) with no lyrics, but they play the entire song. It's very bored to listen to The Stone for 4:30 - 5:00 of just guitar.
Anything that can stand on its own- something like Comfortable by (gasp) Mayer has a bass line and melody that goes well on its own. Also, Signe by Eric Clapton is simple and effective.

Mood For A Day - Steve Howe, Harp Etude(w/my own cadenza) - Mauro Guiliani, Minor Swing - Django, Pride and Joy - SRV, Jimi Thing with a WWYS jam tease ending, some flamenco sounding stuff always works , as well as SMTS>ASTB>TM, the possibilities are endless .

if you've got blackbird down, people seem to be impressed by it (ironic, considering how simple the song is from a musical standpoint.) if i feel like singing, i'll play some bathtub gin or, if the mood is right, champagne supernova, but to paraphrase a previous post, if you really know the song inside and out, any song can be impressive.
peace.

My guitar teacher and I came up with an arrangement of the jazz standard Misty for solo guitar. It fits the melody and the chords together, so I can play alone and sound good. I usually use that one.
For some reason, people seem to be impressed by the opening riff to Day Tripper.

Yeah Blackbird works surprisingly well...and people that don't know the song usually end up liking the melody.
SMTS with some variation and a lick or two thrown in is cool.
Learning some flashy Spanish guitar works wodners as well.

i usually do the general by dispatch, people usually dig that. just fooling around i do the stone, what would you say jam, and to please the girls i almost always do crash.

Crash...works every time. DMB fan or not. Often I'll start playing that for people I know are not DMB fans and the always say something like "ooh, I love that one. What is it?" When playing for DMB fans, I usually do a little SMTS, Warehouse, WWYS, LIOG, or Ants before I get into Crash, but once you do, a smile always pops up. What Will Become of Me and the One Sweet World Intro are gems as well.

#41=Sure thing for getting laid that night by any chick you want
41 definitly requires some voice. The guitar part on its own doesn't seem to stand for people.

Nothing wrong with a little Divided Sky (Phish) if you have the chops and hate your voice. DMB related, people seem to miss the general brilliance of the Billies progression, so I'm more inclined to play Warehouse or LIOG over that. Counting Crows' melodies are really nice and generally will put people in a good mood.

I usually play the stone, trippin' billies or satelitte to try to impress but the ladies always seem to go for Crash

The vast majority of ladies out there aren't keen enough to enjoy good guitar, they get turned on by the voice while playing the guitar. ;)

if really depends who you are trying to impress...i mean for other guitarists you can play some buddy guy blues licks or some eric clapton. but for the ladies stuff like cannonball by damien rice and morning after by howie day seems to do the trick.

I like how this thread became "What song do you use to impress girls." :)
As for that question, I think it depends on the person. Knowing which artists she likes helps more than being good at guitar.

:thumbsup I'm actually kinda psyched - having a poolside BBQ in the backyard in a week or so, and some friends may be bringing guitars. Looking forward to a laid back DMB jam session...

I love to play any DMB song, but my friends don't really like the Dave, (I cringe at the thought of someone not likeing Dave) but as long as i don't tell them who the song is by they enjoy it. I know deep down they must like they just think they have to act cool.

well anyways i usually play something like WWYS, Mona Lisa (Guster), Jimi Thing, Why Georgia and Crash if any ladies present.

My favorite to play in order:

Watchtower
One Sweet World
The Stone
Billies

Crash

Crush
Warehouse

I still like playing Oh, even though its at the bottom. Too bad my voice sucks, cuz I can play all those songs perfectly. I should probably start taking voice lessons.
Back to the original topic, I brought my guitar on vacation last week and played it on the beach. I met two girls the first day, I played Crash for them and The Stone to impress them. It actually worked, we ended up hanging out all week.

Ok, for pure impressing people...I do my own contraption of Streaming Through 41. It's a combination of Stream and 41 (dont' ask, just happened one day). If you wanted to check it out, it's online here.
Jeremy Sliwoski - Streaming Through 41 (http://mail.rochester.edu/~js004m/Downlloads/Streaming%20Through%2041.mp3)
Also, recently I've been starting to do Crush, which if you include a stop-time jamm and soloing is pretty damn hard on one guitar, and also makes the ladies go crazy. If all else fails, I have my own music to fall back upon.

Wow. Now thats impressive. That sounds almost exactly like Tim. The only thing that isn't perfect about it is that some of the faster parts aren't as smooth as Tim plays 'em. Its still amazing, I'm nowhere near that good yet.
How long have you been playing? Just wondering how long you have to be playing to be that good  I'm at a year and a half, so hopefully I'm not too far behind.

let me think....I started playing the end of my freshman year at high school.....and spent the summer after my sophomore year learning that song.....so give or take...it was about year after i started playing that I learned that song. But then again i spent about 5 hours a day durring hte summer playing guitar. I know it's still not smooth, i think i just did a one long take on that. I've been playing...damn, six years now....gah, way too long for me not to have a record deal.

haha, yea, you're pretty good. I made a recording or myself playing The Stone, Billies, Warehouse and Over the Hills and Far Away just to see what you think. I have the L@LC tab book, so I guess I could try it out. Its just a minute long, so tell me what you think. Am I good enough to try it out?

You might need iTunes to play it. I've got a Mac and I don't know how to make it .mp3. Sorry.

I impress people by sitting in my basement by myself and not letting them hear me play....
Except for when I'm drunk at parties and someone is trying to play Stairway to Heaven and taking 15 seconds in between each of the opening notes... Then I crank out #41, because like I have said before... It's the only one I can sing and play effectively (I still suck)....
