View Full Version : Minnesota Twins

If Twins end up overtaking Detroit and winning the division, Mauer is definite MVP, if he's not close already as it is.
The Twins merely staying in the race this long is helping Mauer get the MVP vote. The ONLY way he wouldn't win it is if voters couldn't get over the fact that he's on a bad team, which isn't the case. He's on a mediocre team, but one that's still in the playoff chase.

Ranks 1st in AL in BA (.374)
Ranks 1st in AL in OBP (.441)
Ranks 1st in AL in SLG (.610)
Ranks 1st in AL in OPS (1.051)
Throw in he's 13th in homeruns (27) and 14th in RBI's (87), this guy makes the team go.

By comparison...Derek Jeter:
Ranks 4th in AL in BA (.330)
Ranks 7th in AL in OBP (.399)
Ranks 33rd in AL in SLG (.466)
Ranks 23rd in AL in OPS (.865)
Ranks 44th in homeruns (17) and 51st in RBI's (64)
I'll throw in runs scored: Mauer is 17th (86) and Jeter is 2nd (102)

Honest to God, how is this even a question?

Peter Gammons has made it no secret he's voting for Mauer and feels it should be near unanimous (which might be wishful thinking because of all the Jeter lovers out there who will vote for him simply because he's never won it.)

I can't believe this is even a question. I read somewhere (maybe even linked from Ants) that New York writer was trying to justify a Jeter MVP by comparing it to the Oscar lifetime achievement award... or how some directors or actors win the Oscar for a really good movie years and years after losing as part of a great movie....

I'm sure a sweep this weekend might be asking too much, but we're facing the Tigers at a good time.
Edit: With the way Cuddy has been producing at 1B it's a shame Morneau didn't go down sooner with the way his back is, the hole in his bat was a drag on the lineup's output.

Oh man. That was cool. Great crowd at the dome tonight, felt like a playoff game. Our little husker Duensing is on a roll like I can't believe. Really happy to see him doing well at the major league level. With the Tiger-killer Pavano going tomorrow and Baker Sunday...this race just got interesting. I swear to God, if Pavano doesn't get the win tomorrow, he should have to forfeit any salary paid to him by the Twins. This game tomorrow is THE reason we got him.

Because he can't make the final out at home in a 3-0 game, not saying the run was meaningless but there is no real incentive to take the base there, got to let the batter do his thing

I thought about that afterwards and you're right, he doesn't. It was just one of those "oh crap Nathan is on the hill in the 9th and he has two runners on and he just threw a wild pitch" kinda bad feelings.

oh man, couldn't agree with you more. I love how important college football/Huskers are to me. Except on days like this. I just want to crawl into a hole and die. Even the Twins win can't make a dent in the impenatrable shield that is that Husker loss.

The implosion of the Metrodome can't come soon enough. Imagine how many bloop hits and fudged pop-ups will not happen when the dome is gone. The Twins are losing one of, if not the best, home field advantages in baseball. They will become just another National League-style team when they move into their new stadium.
I was dreading this series and it appears our fears are not unfounded.
But whomever said the Twins are a scary playoff team is totally wrong. You're just hot at the right moment. These aren't the 2006 Twins.

I think people make too much of the roof. I'd be willing to bet that as many people lose balls in the sun as they do in our roof. It's just that when it happens, everyone makes a big deal out of it. But the infield "dome" hits will be missed.
And you should recall that the 2006 Twins got swept in the first round of the playoffs by the A's. If we do pull off the miracle and win the Central, our playoff fortunes can't possibly be worse than that.

Its not that they're that important to me but they were happening at the same time. Right as Kubel got the go ahead hit and Cuddy hit the HR it was when VT threw that long pass. That was weird. I was at a bar with the Husker game on one big screen and the Twins game on another. At one point I remember the Twins were rallying in the 8th and Nebraska stopped VT on 4th down. The whole place was going crazy, half the people watching the Twins, half the people watching Nebraska. I also thought it was going to be a great day at that point.
Then we couldn't get a first down...
Then we didn't blitz when we had them deep in their own territory...
Then we blew a coverage assignment at the worst possible time...

Funny the way it is, I was 100% certain we needed a sweep of the Tigers. But now, even after losing Sunday and falling back to 3 games behind Det, I still think we have a fighting chance. The Tigers are just not playing well. If we can pick up a game on them during the next series, and go to Detroit only 2 games back, we definately have a chance to take 3 of 4. That happens, and I really like our chances.

(If necessary) Tiebreaker game is in Minnesota...the same Monday night that Minnesota hosts Green Bay.
NFL says they won't move the game.
My thought is hell no they shouldn't move the game. Can you IMAGINE the excitement around the dome that day if they played the baseball game during the day and then they play one of the most highly anticipated regular season football games in a while at night? Holy crap...Detroit wouldn't have a shot.

That was a pretty good time. Doesn't quite beat 2006 when we got to celebrate a division title with the team after our game was over. Still, Tuesday should be out of this world. We simply must win that game and take the AL Central Championship, especially after the mountain we just climbed to get here and what happened last year.

Good times at the game today. I took something like 600 pictures, literally (about 11GB worth). I got the homerun swings of both Kubel's second homerun and Cuddyer's homerun (which may end up being the very last homerun ever hit in the Metrodome). I plan on bringing my camera to Tuesday's game as well. I'll post pictures when I get them edited. Here's a taste:

Not as bad as going home the very next night, but yeah, it doesn't make the ALDS any easier, especially against the Yankees. Didn't Detroit beat the Yankees in the 2006 ALDS after the upset in game 162?

11th inning time.

EDIT: On replay, he got it right. I think if Casilla would have had is hand flat on the ground through the whole slide, he may have been safe, but he didn't put his hand down until it was over the plate.
