The new stadium wouldnt have a retractable roof on it; hence the low price, which legislators might pass. It would cost 100 million extra to get a roof.

That can be added later, since the design has always had the ability for modular construction. I think it's great. If Detroit, NYM, NYY, and Boston can survive in April and October without a roof, we die-hard 'Sotans can too.

I've noticed a strange trend, and I brought it up today on a local sports talk radio show, and made my case(it actually turned into the topic of the hour). A MLB scout guesting on the show agreed that teams are starting to place less value on Twins prospects, since they don't adjust well to other organizations that are more 'individual focused'. The Twins organization makes players perform as a team and above their ability. The players value increases, but the players only perform under the Twins coaching and team structure. Once they get traded or wander under free agency, they fall apart.

Guzman: Currently hitting .178 in Washington. Underperforming. Already has 3 fielding errors(12 all last year)
Hawkins: Solid as a Twin: Not welcome in Wrigley anymore, blows games often.
Pierzynski: Performed great in MN, SF hated him, Chicago is souring on him, too.
Mientkiewicz: Bounces right out of Boston, pisses off the front office. lands at NYM, still an unknown commodity.
Koskie: Hits high .200s & low .300s w/ MN, now .192 at Toronto
Guardado: Currently stinking it up in Seattle, 50% less saves on 30% less opportunities last year
Kielty: Never hit below .250 as a Twin. .233 w/ Toronto, .214 w. Oakland, currently .111

Exception: Ortiz

The word in the league is that Hot Twins do not translate into good ballplayers elsewhere. Interesting.

That is interesting, no one ever prospers when they go elsewhere, except Ortiz, but not everyone can suck when they leave town. There's no one on the team who puts up impressive numbers, sure they have a good year but like you said, it was in the Twins system, which is the opposite of power teams like the Yankees, Red Sox and hell, even the Chi Sox who like to hit for power. A lot of other markets are more critical of their players and that can take a toll on a guy who even when he was down, still received slight encouragement from the Minnesota public. Dougie Fresh and Guzman added more defensive support than offensive, and that played well in to the Twins scheme of winning with good fielding. Now they play where defense comes second and the teams want to put runs on the board, which we know both of these guys were never run producers. Although, Guardado was always shaky when he came in to close games, I always got nervous, especially if it was only a one run game, he was usually good for letting at least one guy on base, if not two before closing it out. Closers shut you the fuck down, not grease through an inning here and there because of a timely pitch that happened to lead to a double play. On that note, Joe Nathan is a rock, even at his worst he's still better than Everyday Eddie.

it's nice to have a team that promotes growth for all players.
that's why i'm not a vikings fan...(sorry).
they just don't build a team, they build for right now, right now, right now. they are talented, but why not get some stability and kick ass for years instead of this year, this year , this year?
sorry to hi-jack the thread. back to the twins.
we need to stop leaving players on the bases. lately we have had hits, but few runs. that sux. gardy said the other day that they are working on this, and i know things don't change overnight, but sooner than later would work for me.

I'm surprized this is on the 3rd page. 8 more K's for Santana. Another win for our ACE!

Plus the White Sox lost so we picked up a game. We've still gotta find the offense. There's no question about the defense, but the offense just hasn't been there.

Last night's game was great. Santana has now gone 20 games consecutive without a loss. Nathan is a machine. he's not human.

The offense needs to pick up, though. Too many men left on base. We threaten and then fizzle(take the top of the 8th as an example). It's a win, on the road, in the division. I'll take it.

If anyone else is pitching that game for the Twins it’s a certain L, you can’t score 2 runs and still pull off a win, unless you have Santana, then two is more than enough. Considering fucking Gay-Rod had 3 homers and 10 RBI’s last night, he himself would have beat the Twins 4 times, now THAT’s run production.

It's still early, and they Twins have always ramped up slowly. They rarely jump into the lead at the beginning of the season. Gardy doesn't let them. Too many players get all nimbly-bimbly to start winning games and either tire themselves out for the stretch or get injured. He keeps them reined in well and makes sure that they hit their strides at the proper times. The Twins are playing with all 162 games in mind. That's my take.

Baseball season is a the freaking marathon of professional sports, no use wasting all your energy in the first third of the season. We're 4 games back on Chicago right now, and that's great considering the the early injuries. Sox don't have the depth to maintain that lead through the season. We'll be up ~6 at the break. Write that down.

In this nice run J has had...3 more wins and he ties the rocket...4 more starts w/o a loss and he will tie a record from 1940's i think...oh well, I think it is safe to say that JS is throwing about as good as a pitcher could ever dream of. Keep it up Johan...

Note #2 of the day...we have to stop leaving runners on base...this is getting old. I mean, they are 4 - 28 when the based are loaded...:BANG When most teams / hitters seem to do their best, we are failing right now...but hey, this is ok. I would rather struggle right now, in April, than in Aug or Sept (Chi Sox).

Note #3 The new stadium plan is pretty good, but some people still are having a hard time understanding why paying .03 for a $20 purchase is worth it :BANG :violent . Folks, if the Twins don't ask for STATE funding, they need to raise some $$$ in another way. I wish Carl would take out his checkbook and pay $300 mil toward the stadium, which would then include a roof and ask for the county to assist with with the remaining $250 mil in the bonds which will be paid off by this minor tax increase. I mean, if I buy a house soon (which are my plans) I will be contributing a few $$$ toward the stadium (165K house x .15 % = $248) - and I dont care!!!! Just build the fucker...you will see a full house every game for at least 3 seasons...and they WILL HAVE TO re-sign all of our stars - and not bitch about it...and they could then raise their payroll a few $$$...

I WANT OUTDOOR BASEBALL!!!!
the one hitch is that the Hennipen County Commision is debating if they should maike this a referrendum or not....NO!!! If you leave it up to the voters, they will vote no - buit if you do it, they won't complain. I mean, when did an extra .03 on a $20 purchanse make you rethink the purchase? Oh yeah, and one final note about this little tax...two choices when the stadium bonds have been paid for - 1. immediately eliminate the tax, or 2. assign the tax for road improvements, schools, something needed...

Roof or no roof - I don't care!!! Just give me an outdoor stadium...

OK, go Joe - have another solid outing, and lets keep beating up on KC.

Couldn't agree more...the Sox have had this choking issue when it comes to September - but I am confident that we won't have to wait that long this year. I just wonder if Cleveland can put it together this year - I feel they are as much a threat as those damn Sox are this season...

8-10 games by the break? I need to jump into this now. The Sox won't be as affected by the grind as in previous years. A slump by a player in this year's lineup isn't as big as it was the last 5. We are no longer a home run team. We are designed more like teh Twins. Run and gun. Now that we aren't depenedent on the long ball, one of our big guys can go into a slump without affecting the team all that much. It will be a tight race this year, with the Twins and Sox (and Indians if they ever start hitting). If the Sox play 500 ball from here on out, they will win 86 games. The Twins have been averaging 90-92 wins the last couple years. Its going to come down to the 13 games played by Sox/Twins in August/September. I have faith in my Sox.

I do hope the Twins get their stadium.

Vote on sales tax in Hennepin County delayed one week:

One day after being formally unveiled, the newest proposal for a stadium for the Minnesota Twins had a turbulent hearing Tuesday in Hennepin County as opponents argued that the $478 million project was being rushed toward approval without public input.

Though a slim majority of the County Board is believed to support the project, the seven commissioners postponed an initial vote on the 42,000-seat stadium for at least one week. The delay followed a two-hour session in which a familiar throng of supporters and opponents -- many of whom have long debated the merits of a new baseball stadium -- alternately praised and criticized the plan.

"I'm not surprised by it," Commissioner Mike Opat, a lead negotiator on the project, said afterward. "It's a big step." Opat said stadium supporters would have to wait to see whether a majority of the commissioners would vote for the project.

But Commissioner Linda Koblick, who objected to the attempts to give the plan a quick approval, said after the meeting it probably had enough votes to move forward.

"When does the public get to weigh in on this?" Koblick asked.

Tuesday's meeting came just two days after an agreement between the Twins and the county was announced to move the team from the 23-year-old Metrodome to an open-air stadium in the Warehouse District of downtown Minneapolis.

The project would include $125 million from the Twins and $235 million from the county to build the stadium. The county's share would be raised through a countywide 0.15 percent sales tax that would add 3 cents to every $20 purchase.

The project's total cost, including bonding costs and site preparation, would be $478 million, and the agreement stipulates that the proposal would not be subject to a voter's referendum.

But it was those types of details Tuesday that quickly led to friction.

"You're getting taken, guys," said Dann Dobson, a real estate management official who testified against the stadium.

Dobson and others objected to a provision that would pay up to 18 percent of the gross sales price to a newly created stadium commission should Twins owner Carl Pohlad sell the team before 2016.

While Dobson argued that Pohlad would profit many times over what the county would receive from any sale, county officials stressed that the agreement obligated the Twins to a "no-escape, 30-year lease." The Twins also would agree not to relocate the team and would oppose any move by Major League Baseball to eliminate the team.

At various points, the meeting featured several onlookers holding homemade signs -- one asked the county to "Finish the Cedar Lake Bike Trail" -- and a man who rolled an infant in a stroller up to the podium as he testified. William Oosterman of Minneapolis told the commissioners the proposal was "blatant corporate welfare" and a "boondoggle."

Stadium supporters were equally passionate. Sam Grabarski, executive director of the Downtown Council, said the stadium and the anticipated development surrounding it would be "one of the great epic public works" in Hennepin County history. "I think that three cents on a $20 purchase is not that an outrageous thing," he said.

Outside the meeting room, Jerry Bell, the president of the Twins' parent company, watched calmly. "I'm getting used to it," Bell said. He said that Opat, during negotiations with the team, had told him that while he could not promise the proposal would be approved by the county, Opat "was comfortable [and] felt good" that it would pass.

County officials had attempted Tuesday to take an initial step toward formally asking the Legislature for the authority to increase the local sales tax, an amount that would annually bring in $28 million. But Commissioner Penny Steele said that she had little time to study either the agreement or a series of relatively minor amendments that were offered to it on Tuesday. "This is the first time I have looked at this," Steele, who is expected to vote against the plan, said of the amendments.

In a break with policy, the board agreed to allow continued public testimony on the stadium at its meeting next Tuesday.

Said Commissioner Mark Stenglein: "There'll be plenty of time for the public's input."

The delay was inevitable. The Hennepin county commission has two types of meetings. Tuesday's meeting was a meeting where votes are not allowed. Next week's meeting is a vote-type meeting.

But, it sounds like it will go through. The only obtacle is getting the state to fund the roof, but I think it will go through without it.

Rincon suspended for 10 days for violating the substance abuse policy (steriods, i believe).
huh...
i thought of all teams, twins would be the cleanest...

Haven't been able to listen to any speculation...but he received the ban for testing positive for a "banned substance"...while we all want to assume steroids, there are a lot more "banned substances" on this list now...and we WILL find out if it was steroids or not...some of these baseball players aren't the smartest people and continue to use suppliments that may have ingredients which are banne dand they may not even know about it.

BUT - it would suck if he were using the roids...:BANG

Hennepin County OKs Twins stadium plan

A bitterly divided Hennepin County Board debated late into the evening Tuesday before voting 4 to 3 to endorse a proposed $478 million baseball stadium for the Minnesota Twins in downtown Minneapolis that would be built using a countywide sales tax increase.

As expected, much of Tuesday's debate centered over the plan's most controversial aspect -- a provision that would exempt the stadium from facing a referendum.

More than 50 people spoke at a public hearing that began in the early afternoon and then spilled into the evening. The hearing passed the seven-hour mark before commissioners finally cast their votes to send the plan to the Legislature.

Early in the proceedings, former Twins first baseman Kent Hrbek walked to the microphone accompanied by two Twins officials, who poured hundreds of cards signed by fans supporting a replacement for the Metrodome onto a table. "I love playing in there, but I hate watching in there as a fan," Hrbek told the packed hearing room.

But for every supporter, there was an equally opinionated opponent. "Why are you afraid of a referendum? Do you not trust us, the voters?" asked John Knight, a Minnetonka attorney. "I'm not some kind of radical here. I'm a Republican."

Tuesday's hearing came just eight days after the proposed open-air stadium was unveiled, drawing quick praise and heated criticism.

Stadium proponents had hoped the state's largest county would move rapidly to ask the Legislature for approval to levy the additional sales tax, which would run for as long as 30 years and amount to three cents for every $20 purchase in the county. The 42,000-seat stadium, to which the Twins would contribute $125 million, would be completed by 2009 in the downtown Warehouse District.

Supporters said the plan, the latest in a decade-long attempt to move the Twins from the Metrodome, was a relatively straightforward proposal that blended public and private money.

But critics argued that it was being rushed toward approval, was overly generous toward Twins owner Carl Pohlad and left little room for public input.

'Anybody else'

The hearing also spilled into the upcoming mayoral race in Minneapolis. In the hallway during the meeting, Hennepin County Commissioner Peter McLaughlin -- a mayoral candidate -- was confronted by Dave Bicking, a delegate to the upcoming DFL endorsing convention. "I think people should get some sort of vote on it," said Bicking, who held a makeshift sign that read "Stop the Stadium."

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, the first speaker on Tuesday, meanwhile gave his clearest endorsement of the plan.

"The deal is sound, and I speak in favor of your moving forward," said Rybak, who had repeatedly declined to endorse the project last week.

Outside the hearing room, DFL city delegate Harry Savage promised that delegates would deny both McLaughlin and Rybak the party's endorsement because of their stadium support. "Anybody else but those two guys right now to be mayor of Minneapolis," he said.

Elsewhere, supporters and opponents squared off. David Sternberg, a senior vice president of Brookfield Properties, a major downtown landowner, was confronted by an opponent after he endorsed the plan at the public hearing. "I believe this is an exceptionally sound piece of legislation," he said.

At one point, County Board Chairman Randy Johnson said that of the 45 people who had spoken, 23 had said they favored the proposal.

Critics however said the majority of the supporters represented downtown business and lobbying groups, who stood to at least indirectly benefit if a new Twins stadium were built. "What we've seen is a lot of upper-level business executives," fumed Kathy Ricketts, an opponent.

I think we have a stadium folks. Hrbek comes to bat for the Twins.

This hearing could have gone better, in fact it went pretty bad from what I've read. The DFL delegates are apparently headhunting any Democrat who endorses the deal. That sucks, as the DFL delegates carry a lot of power in MN. It's going to the legislature now, and the I can almost guarantee that the DFL controlled legislature is going to send it to a referendum in a public vote of county residents. This won't appear on the ballot until this fall(if they're lucky) or next fall. If it's this fall, it will be on the same ballot as they mayoral race. Bad news.

My absolewte favorite part about the 3 games I've went to since last fall when I transferred schools has been screaming "Leeeeeeeeeeeew" whenever he does anything! At the last game I went to (Angels game, Silva pitched) some friends and I tried to yell "Puuuuuuuunto!" but it was too damn funny and he's not clutch like Lew. 8-1 tonight. 7-1 last night. 9-0 the night before. Looks like we got that offense we wanted. Now it's just a matter of keeping it up the winning we're in good position when Chicago falters. Despite their huge succes, we're still only 4.5 back and on track to win 100 games this year.

Mark my words; Frank Thomas will return and they will slump as a result.

I know the Twins are keeping pace, but it’s the White Sox, they aren’t supposed to have the best record in baseball. If shit does keep up at this rate, the WC will come out of the central, and that would be a big step for the division. It would also be interesting if Baltimore holds on to the AL East, then Chi Sox and us make the playoffs, that would be a different look for October baseball…..and I would love it. Harold Reynolds was saying on Baseball Tonight he expects the Yankees to start making a run, winning 8 of their next 10 and getting back in to the swing of things…..I hope he’s wrong and they lost 8 of 10.

No Boston or NY would be a nice departure. And I don't see Chicago staying healthy enough to maintain. NY will go no better than .500 over the next 10, they're not out of the woods yet, and may have done enough damage to doom them in the fall.

Stupid Tiffee. Not only did he make the error at first that put two men on for Cano's 2 RBI double; he stepped on first before throwing home which allowed the tying run to score on the bases loaded infield grounder. Moron.

Give him a little slack, he's not a first baseman.

Then he shouldn't have been standing there. Bases loaded with 1 out and it's hit to the infield. Where do you go? HOME! So after he stepped on first(wasting time and destroying the force at the plate) they intentionally walked Rodriguez to load them up again. So it started off 4-3 with bases loaded and 1 out. After Tiffee's idiocy it was 4-4 with bases loaded and 2 out. Had he just thrown home, it would have been 4-3 with bases loaded and 2 out. I don't know about you, but I like the 4-3 scenario better.

Some Yankers fans were mouthing off after the game too which I replied, "208 million ought to get you one win every seven games or so."

we're 10-12 in one run games. Yeah that's not that good but we're 36-25 so if we would have won half more of those one run games we'd be 42-19, only a half game up on the CWS.

We're well on our way to winning 95+ games if we stay on this pace. I still feel good about that regardless if it's the division or the WC.

Not a bad couple of series against the worst teams in baseball, took 5 out of 6, but should have been two clean sweeps against teams this pitiful. The Sox havent had their annual injury that desimates the team (well, The Big Hurt, but he doesnt count). If one of the guys in their rotation goes down I think that'll throw them off their game, they havent had the proverbial wrench thrown in their gears yet.

I dont think we can rely on the sox going down on their own. They're sick of seeing the twins on top of the division. They're going to be tough down the road especially if the twins cant solidify their lineup and the sox stay as healthy as they have. I think the race will turn into a three way down the road with the end twins on top by a game or two and cleveland back by 6-8.

EatSleepJeep
07-05-2005, 11:19 AM
Correct. We can't control what chicago does, but we sure can give them a run for their money. It makes me sad that Torii was quoted as saying that the Twins are playing for the wild card now, but he's probably right if CWS keeps this going. Otherwise the Twins are positioned well to take over if Chicago stumbles. They're having an unbelieveable year, so the Twinkies just have to win what they can and try to stick close. The WS have to have a slump eventually.

i agree and that took me aback when i saw that too, but he is being realistic. i really think there is such a thing as setting your sights too high. and maybe it's a thing where, instead of being down on themselves for always chasing the sox (which seems like an impossible task -- catching them -- this year) they can take advantage of the adrenaline and emotion that comes from being in a race. they are only a game up on cleveland in the wild card, but at least that's not 8 and a half games back.

big win last night by the way!!!! i really wish mauer would start coming through...i think i have my expectations set too high with him, but he just doesn't seem to hit very well. and morneau in the 7 hole?? i realize it's tactical (LRLRLR) but still...that's depressing too.

oh well. see some of you for the game next friday (the 15th) it's my birthday present from my fiance!! :thumbsup

Poosible deal brewing between the BoSox and Twins:

Here's what's moving through the Twins' grapevine these days:

The Red Sox have called the Twins looking for pitching. Boston is believed to be interested in lefthander J.C. Romero, who could help stabilize a bullpen that had a 5.51 ERA entering Monday -- the second-highest in the American League.

The Twins, of course, are looking for hitting, and the Red Sox might be willing to deal veteran third baseman Bill Mueller, who is batting .277 with four homers, 36 RBI and a .379 on-base percentage.

Mueller was the 2003 AL batting champion when he hit .326 with 19 homers and 85 RBI. Those numbers fell to .283, 12 and 57 last year. He is making $2.5 million and will be a free agent after the season.

First baseman-outfielder Kevin Millar also is available, although he indicated to Boston reporters he would prefer to stay with the World Series champions.

The Yanks and BoSox series will be a good litmus test to see if we can either come back in the central or compete for the wild card.

Hopefully I can catch some Twins games sometime in August in the dome. Either the BoSox series or the Seattle series. It'll all depend on when my mom can go. Yep son and mother going to a baseball game. I love mom.

looks like it's a strained tendon.

BOSTON -- Twins center fielder Torii Hunter strained a tendon in his left ankle in a collision with the fence and was taken off the field on a cart during the first inning of Friday's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

No word was immediately available on how much time Hunter would be out. X-rays for fractures were negative, but the team said Hunter will have an MRI on Monday.

Hunter was attempting to catch a long fly to center field off David Ortiz's bat when he hit with the fence. His spike appeared to get caught on the fence's padding.

Television replays showed the 30-year-old Hunter, a four-time Gold Glove winner and AL starter in the 2002 All-Star Game, grimace in pain immediately as he fell to the warning track. He was unable to make the catch as Ortiz went to second base with a double.

Hunter spent several moments down on the field as Twins players and trainers rushed to his aid. The injury was serious enough for him to be taken off the field a cart through a door in the center field wall. Lew Ford was called on to replace him in the field.

This season, Hunter has a team-leading 14 home runs while batting .269 with 50 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He had yet to bat in Friday's game.

Bad news for Twins' fans: :(

Hunter suffered broken ankle, not tendon tear

Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Twins (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=min) center fielder Torii Hunter (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5884) will miss at least another month, if not the rest of the season, because of a broken left ankle.

Hunter had an MRI and CT scan on Monday, which revealed a small undisplaced fracture of his talus, which is a bone in the ankle.

The injury occurred on Friday night in Boston, when Hunter -- a four-time Gold Glove winner -- tried to make a catch by climbing the center-field wall at Fenway Park.

The Twins initially feared Hunter had torn a tendon in the ankle, which would probably require surgery and force him out for the rest of the year. There's no tear, team spokesman Mike Herman said, but Hunter will be on crutches for three-to-four weeks and miss an undetermined amount of time.

It's crippling news for Minnesota, which loses its best defensive player and a leader in the clubhouse. Plus, Hunter's 63 runs, 24 doubles, 56 RBI and 23 steals are tops on the team. He's batting .269 with 14 homers.

The Twins, who have lost eight of their last 10, began the day 14½ games behind the Chicago White Sox (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=cha) in the AL Central and four games back of the Oakland Athletics (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=oak) in the wild-card race.

Twins released Bret Boone today and called up Jason Bartlett.

Hopefully we can get some bats going and hopefully they'll be contagious.
