I would think it might have to be Santana, especially if we win game 3 and its by the skin of our teeth. Sure, we wouldnt have him for game 5 but at least we'd be playing a game 5 and it would be at home.

Ah, not a decision I'd argue with. But damn. One bad break and the series is near out of their hands.

If Radke can get a win on Friday I'd feel uberconfident with Santana on the hill in game 4. If the series goes back to the Dome anything can happen.

You gotta give the ball to the youngster Bonser in game 5. He's young and wants to redeem himself. Plus, he'll have the energy of the dome behind him...

Despite all that, they did not win. Runs were given up. I agree, he pitched well but it can always be better in the mind of a starter.

When a rookie starter gives up 2 runs in 6 innings during his first postseason start, he should not walk away feeling he needs to redeem himself. Sure he can want to pitch better, but Boof has no reason to hang his head the slighest bit. The Twins offense does for the first two games and Hunter does especially tonight. I agree that Boof should come out hungry and wanting to pitch better, but he has nothing to redeem at this point.

That game was almost as difficult to watch the end of as Game 5 of the 2002 Anaheim series. Did anyone see Morneau when he hit the home run? He shook his head like, "if i'd only of made that play we'd be down by one." It was tough.
We've always got next year with Santana, Liriano, Bonser, Garza, and Silva in any order you want.

LOL.
Silva had such promise at the beginning of the season, only to be mediocre most of the season. He'd have a few good starts in a row, just to get your hopes up, only to follow it up with a month or two of bad pitching.

If the Twins bring back Silva I will be very disappointed. I would rather see the Twins pitch Baker then Silva. The Twins should use his $4M and Radke's $9 million salary to get a good starter, somwhere between $5-$7M and use the rest to re-sign and/or arbitration for Morneau, Mauer, and Cuddyer. Also, Stewart wont be back and that will give the Twins another $6.5M to play around with. Does anyone here want the Twins to pick up Torii's $12M option or buy him out for $2M?

Biggest concern: starting pitching. Liriano may help, but we are young. We are thin at starting pitching, but many of them got some experience this year...sounds like they want to pick up Silva's option b/c they hate giving away starting pitching...

That was one of the big reasons why I thought they'd bring back Torii this year and years to come. You FINALLY got a stadium built and then you let one of the guys who's been here the longest go? I doubt it. You need name guys to be out in the field to put butts in the seats.

I'm not too worried about haing names in the field at that point...Mauer, Mourneu, Santana, Liriano, Garza, Cuddy - and who knows what other players will emerge in the next 2 -3 years...HOWEVER, I have always felt it would be right to start the new era in the new ballpark with Torii in CF to start things out,and at that point, we should have the next great CF to replace Torii (I know there is a guy in the minors right now, but he is not ready and I can't remember his name for the life of me)...
As far as locking up 3-4-5 for the next few years - look for the team to go through arbitration with those 3 to see what happens...if they can seal those guys up for 3 - 5 years after the arbitration decision, the Twins will do it. These will NOT be the biggest contracts Mauer and Mourneau will see in their career. These guys aren't going anywhere in the near future.
While Terry Ryan has admitted we may need to pick up another vet starter, he said that the Twins scored enough runs this year and they are not going to look for another big bat :shrug IT would be nice to get another bat in this line up, but we will have to wait and see...
Let's hope the farm system continues to produce winners and good ball players - Yankees are you listening - and we can keep this thing going. The AL Central should be the best division in baseball next year, again.

But Eddie. The state of Minnesota has been fighting a ballpark for a long long time. How would the orginization look in terms of building for the future, if after finally getting a ballpark let one of the veteran leaders get away? Yes I realize that our future is with morneau, mauer, liriano, etc but Torii has been here through it all and it would only make sense for him to be here for the new ballpark.
I think we still need a big bat. Just someone who is there to hit the shit out of the ball. I know those guys are few and far between. But having Phil Nevin as our DH isn't going to cut it. Another arm in the pitching rotation wouldn't hurt but not the most pressing need.

Don't get me wrong, I want Torii there too...but in 3 more years it will be time for someone else to take over, or at least figure out who will take over. By picking up his option, the Twins prolonged their negotiating timetable.
As I said, they will work on the contracts for the young guys, and should have something figured out with Torii which will be a 3 - 4 yr extension - under market value.
I just hope that we do have another superstar CF in the wings down in the minors - this has always been a bright spot for the Twins, and I think Torii would be a great "teacher" to this young player.

I wasn't the one looking for another south paw...but it would be cool...all lefty starters, with a bullopen full of righties? That would be funny.
We will have to see how Baker and Bonser do in spring training. If they pick up Silva's option, and Liriano has a healthy off season, than all we are worrying about is a 4 & 5 - which we have plenty of pitchers, just young guns now.
You have to assume that Radke is done - Ryan said yesterday that if Radke wanted to pitch next year, he would need the surgery to repair the torn labrum. Radke has said he would rather not have surgery, and just retire...so we will wait and see...

The Twins must find a way to pay both Mauer and Morneau what they deserve. They are on the cusp of solidifying a solid core of players that teams dream of: Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Santana, Bonser, Garza, Bartlett and don't forget Liriano. I think his best year was 2002. About 15 wins, ERA under 4.00. Intersting sign. Hopefully the Twins can get him to turn the corner and return to that form. I still wish that they would trade a solid starter to put behind Johan but oh well. We have the best pitching prospects in baseball, from low minors on up, so hopefully they develop.
Ortiz will be penciled into the starting rotation. We have locks of Johan, Boof, Silva, and now Ortiz. Ponson will simply be brought in to be put up next to Garza, Baker, and Perkins so they can see a real life version of what not to be. I see Garza being the last starter.

Carneal was part of the club's radio play-by-play crew for all but the first year of the team's existence in Minnesota.
"To hear that voice was magic," said former first baseman Kent Hrbek, who listened to Twins games growing up in the suburb of Bloomington and later played 13 seasons for the team before retiring in 1994. "When I was a kid, it meant school was almost out and spring was coming."
A native of Richmond, Va., whose first radio job was right out of high school, Carneal called Athletics and Phillies games in Philadelphia and Orioles games in Baltimore before coming to Minnesota in 1962 -- a year after the Washington Senators moved west to become the Twins.
Carneal was given the Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball broadcasting by the Hall of Fame in 1996. With his fluid, understated style and southern drawl, Carneal's warm voice became synonymous with broadcasts on WCCO-AM and affiliates on the network throughout the Upper Midwest.
Opening each game with his signature greeting,"Hi, everybody," Carneal was a master of minutiae who could easily recall old facts and statistics well into his 80s.
His on-air partner for the past 20 years, John Gordon, spoke with Carneal each week this spring. Even though his health was failing, Carneal consistently impressed his colleague by the way he stayed on top of the news from Minnesota's camp -- and around the majors.
That professionalism and attention to detail was one of his strengths. Even when his time on the air was limited recently, Carneal's preparation remained meticulous.
"I used to just be amazed," Gordon said Sunday."'Come on, Herb, you're only doing three innings. You don't have to put all of this together like you're auditioning for a job.' But that was him."
On recent visits to the Metrodome, Hrbek was struck by how frail Carneal had become.
"But stick him in front of that microphone, and it was smooth as glass. You'd think you were 10 years old again, listening to him," Hrbek said Sunday.
Survived by his daughter, Terri, and grandson, Matthew, Carneal was preceded in death by his wife Kathy. Funeral arrangements were pending Sunday.
Carneal stopped traveling in 1998, scaled back further in 2003 and last year was limited to the first three innings of weekend and weekday afternoon home games. He was scheduled for similar spot duty on the air this season, but his deteriorating health had put that duty in doubt.
Needing a walker to get around and his vocal chords clearly weakened, Carneal sat in the media dining room and smiled before last year's home opener -- still eager to call the game.
"As long as I can do the job the way it should be done," he said then.
In a 2003 interview with The Associated Press, Carneal spoke warmly about the way he was able to connect listeners throughout the region to the team -- whether they were sitting on their porches, driving in their cars or cooking dinner in the kitchen.
"Sometimes I say, 'What's an old man like me doing here announcing a kid's game?"' he said then."But I'll get a letter from someone saying how much they look forward to hearing the games on the air. That's one of the things that makes me keep going."
His favorite call came in 1987, when the Twins won their first World Series. Sixteen years later, in that interview, he mimicked his original narration -- without hesitation -- of the final play of a Game 7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
"Willie McGee hits a little bouncer down to Gaetti, there's the throw to Hrbek ... and the Twins are world champions! The Twins are world champions!"
Carneal dabbled in football, but after announcing some Triple-A games in Springfield, Mass., and then several seasons of major league broadcasts he knew his sport was baseball, a youth-instilled passion.
"Most of the kids that I hung around with, we all liked baseball," Carneal said."We just liked to play. It was something we all seemed to enjoy."
Garrison Keillor, another radio man whose voice made him a Minnesota icon, once wrote a tune for one of his Prairie Home Companion shows that was titled"Porch Song." In that whimsy, folksy tribute to summer's simple pleasures, Keillor included this stanza:
"Just give me two pillows and a bottle of beer. And the Twins game on radio next to my ear. Some hark to the sound of the loon or the teal. But I love the voice of Herb Carneal."

Very sad news on the eve of our opener again, but alas, the Twins will make it.
It will not be the same to listen to Twins games, and NOT hear Herb, but hey, they aren't on WCCO anymore...
As far as the season looks - it should be another exciting run in the Central (baseball's best division again?)...

Yep, 3 wins are 3 wins...I will always take 2/3 or 3/4 in every series...that was what I said last year when they started to turn it on - just win 2/3 and you will be just fine...
With an offense as we saw in the first few games, and the pitching holding its own on the first trip through the rotation...not a bad start, but yeah, it was the O's...:D

I think Bert takes joy in watching those few pitchers in the league who give up massive amounts of long balls because:
A) It gives him company in that category in the record books
B) Its another reason for him to be the subject of something on air that isn't related to his birthday.
C) Chicks dig the long ball
Garza will be in the rotation by mid-May at the latest

The world must be off its axis, Johan took the loss tonight in giving up 4 runs. Rabe needs to be sent back down, he's a poor excuse for a left fielder. Why charge on a ball you know you can't get and off the bat of a guy who one of the fastest in the league. Inside the park homers at the dome only happen when hit to CF, not lazy flyballs to left.

Twins looked great tonight. Very nice hitting night. Hunter's grand slam was sick, and Mauer with 3 doubles was awesome. My prediction for the year is that Jason Tyner (longest active MLB at bat appearances without a home run) will hit a home run this year. Still a little distracted by the Wild (THAT was an AWESOME game)...however, that doesn't mean I wasn't watching both...
In fact, Torii's Grand Salami was hit right after the Wild scored their 3rd goal (I think, that 3rd period was crazy)...I raised my hands to celebrate, and looked to my left and saw Torii's ball go over the fence...

I don't see Silva overtaking Felix tonight, I just don't
Well, that is why 2/3 is always the way to look at any series...if we can keep some of the offense going, and if SIlva curve is dropping, we should be ok tonight...if not, there is always tomorrow...

Well, that was fun last night...Silva looked good - he only made one bad pitch, and Mr Sexon made him pay for it...
I really hope Joe Nathan can buckle down soon....I know he is 4/4 with a 1-1 record also, but man this is getting old...I thought once we got rid of Eddie G we didn't have to suffer through these crazy 9th innings...oh well...WONDERFUL play to close the game...
Johan going tonight...5:30 start, alright, I kind of like that idea, especially with the Wild playing too...

Again, turning an easy victory to a crazy finish...however, I do like the idea of Joe Nathan getting the opportunity to get saves in the book right now...
Again, it would be nice to get 2/3 from KC - whio gave us fits last year...
Loved the 5:30 start, gave me time to run a couple of errands in between games, but was up way too late watching that Wild game...

They will settle down...and let's be honest, they were AMAZING last year - especially #'s wise...if you only looked at the #'s it would look like they DOMINATED everyone...
This is also one of the quicker starts we have had as a team in a while, so if we can continue the pace - 2/3 - we will do just fine.

Yeah, we could be, it's not like they came here and split a series with us..right, they did...
As usual, teams start off slow, and then will get better, but baseball in April can be pretty rough...you rarely hear of a team going 17-3 in April, yet so many teams are 10-10, give or take a game or two...teams start to make their push...

GA outfield seats...always fun out there. If there are more than 2 people in your group, get there a little early if you want ok seats, especially when they are expecting 25 - 30,000 people. And because it is GA, if you get up to get food, you may lose your spot...
jesus mary and joseph we need a win...
Seriously, I am sick of this...last night was disgusting...again, even though it is April, I WISH WE HAD PLAYERS WHO COULD HIT THE BALL!!! :BANG
I am not mad at Ponson - he had 2 bad pitches. Although he has a problem when he is ahead of batters :freak Granted both bad pitches HR's, he only gave up 4 runs...and I can't get too upset at Casilla yet, he is still a young player who has already proven he is ready to play in the big leagues, but he needs to learn that in the 8th inning, when you are down by 1 run and the reigning MVP at the plate, don't lead too far off of 2nd base :shrug BUT, we should not have been fighting to get back into the game at that point...
The Kansas City Royals pitching staff is dominating our hitters. Sad, VERY SAD :mad

While it would be nice, there is no reason to get rid of him right now if we can't produce any offense. Tough weekend, and could get worse with the injury to Joe
http://www.startribune.com/509/story/1166837.html
"Twins catcher Joe Mauer landed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday because of a strained left quadriceps muscle, but the injury could take a little longer to heal.
Mauer, who has been bothered by the injury in recent games, felt it tighten up running the bases over the weekend. A magnetic resonance imaging exam taken Sunday morning revealed the strain. The area is swollen and the MRI also detected some bleeding.
Mauer might need three weeks to recover. "It could be more [than 15 days]," Mauer said. "Hopefully not."...
Not to mention injuries to the others...Cuddy, White (surprise, surprise), Castillo, etc...
As long as the key players are around come July/August, that is what will count the most.

They need to litter the rotation with youngsters behind Johan and see where it takes them. Boof and Baker have pitched solid, that might give the other guys down in Triple-A some confidence to do the same if given the chance.

I think you could be right. We have some very good young talent that will eventually be solid starters within our team. Hopefully Baker's outing tonight really kick starts his career and inspires Garza and this Kevin Slowly, he is like one of the best pitchers in all of triple A has the best ERA amoung the starters and 2nd in wins and like 7th in strikeouts. That is what I really like about Minnesota we develop our players instead of going the easy expensive route and just buying people like the East coast fags.

Ortiz might be trying to pitch himself out of the rotation, which would be ok because our bullpen is starting to get depleted. Agree. Ortiz should go to the pen. Reyes season last year I am starting to think might have been a fluke. He had, I think, the best ERA of all our bullpen last year. Just remember we are missing our best hitter at the moment and filling his spot is an old veteran, who is doing a great job by the way, but once Mauer is back our line-up will look solid liek this....
