well ... he's not really an idiot. he made an odd choice to not string it with 12 strings, but that doesn't make him an idiot.

are you sure that the other 6 strings are actually there, but they're so thin you can't tell? But that guitar looks pretty beat up anyway

He's obviously not an idiot simply for his great taste in vintage guitars. I've known people who string up their twelve string with a standard six string set to have a wider neck on a great guitar without having to buy a new one. He might even have another 12 string so why not use it as possibly a fingerstyle guitar with a wide neck. I have two twelve strings and I've considered doing that with my banger, but right now I have it tuned down a step with twelve strings instead.

unless he's adjusted the truss rod (i'm assuming this d35 has one) to accomodate much less tension on the neck, this guy is risking serious damage to the guitar. this is no "banger."

not adjussting the truss for LESS tension is hardly a big deal. the necks not gonna crack off backwards. the only risk hes taking is having to do a truss adjustment when he strings it back up with 12.

I have the same guitar, and I do the same thing. It sounds great and feels incredible. Some people argue about whether string tension is an issue or not, and most of the time it isn't. In fact, if you're going to be storing or traveling with a guitar, the companies may recommend that you loosen the strings. So...yeah...
When travelling with a guitar, it's true- you loosen the strings, but you have to retension them ASAP.
I'd tend to think this person is aware of the difficulties and has reset the truss rod accordingly. Properly done, I don't think this would pose a problem. Actually, the guitar may be so old and "tired" that it can only accomidate six strings safely at this point in its life.

A lot of these older 12 strings they put only 6 strings on so not to put extra stress on the neck...but i agree, its not a good selling point not having all 12 strings on it, if you are selling it as a good 12 string.

exactly. think of all the different ways this is bad. either A) he's saying that the guitar can't handle the stress of 12 strings, or B) it CAN and is set up to do so, but he's only got 6 on there <bad>
What if it can, but's set up for six? That's not a problem...
(except for the silliness of trying to sell it with only six)

This is not true. Too little stress can severely damage a guitar. That's one reason why, for example, you can't put a regular guitar in baritone tuning.
