Did this bother anyone else? Arnold used it last night during his speech when he was reffering to the economic worries of Democrats. It really got on my nerve.
It was still bothering me today, and even though I knew why it was bothering me, I wasn't able to find the right words to use so that I could explain it to other. One of my friends did a pretty good job and it sums up my thoughts well.
What bugged me, and still bugs me, is that Arnold used gender as derogatory adjective. Now before you say that I'm overreacting let me explain some more...
First of all, this horrible misuse of gender is coming from a man who has done some terrible shit to women. If he had said this inside his home, or somewhere other than the RNC, then it would be one thing (it would still bug the hell out of me, though), but to say it on an occasion when much of the country is watching seems pretty ridiculous to me, not to say stupid. I don't think that language like that belongs on the national level.
I don't really understand what 'economic girlie men' means anyways...can someone explain?
All politics aside, I just can't understand how a person, especially women, can't find this offensive. It's a fucking stupid thing to say.
It's ironic that this statement was said to an audience where most women were holding signs "W stands for Women"....

All politics aside (I'm a liberal and democrat), I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to be labelling the remark "offensive" and "stupid." Well, maybe "stupid" isn't that far off, considering the heat he received using the phrase earlier in this campaign. Actually, I think he did it on purpose, as most people see it as nothing but a joke, and when extremists complain about it, it makes everyone on the left look petty and out-of-touch. It's another attempt to keep everybody from focusing on important issues and complexities. If you look at the records, it's clear how much the Republicans have failed this country. But, keep the people entertained and allow the alternative side to jump up and down about harmless catch-phrases, painting them as reactionaries, then they can win.
Don't buy into the smears and the negativity. Arnie isn't offensive. Hell, the remark is even somewhat self-deprecating, as it plays to satire of his muscle-head image. Keep it about the issues.

I agree it was a lame choice of words...I think he was trying to throw some Arnoldspeak in there for the recognition, kind of an appeal to the masses type thing. Bad choice though.

i agree with the original poster. plus no one seemed to grasp the ridiculous irony of him using a phrase that was meant in an SNL skit to be a mockery of himself. it'd be like bush actually using the word "strategery" intentionally in a speech. in fact, that's a nearly perfect parallel.

Didn't Dana Carvey use it first on SNL, and Arnold's just quoting it?
Or do I have it reversed??

Arnold spoke last night at the RNC and he used it there. I think it was a good speech and how can you take that seriously?? He is at a convention meant to stir the pot for his party and that's exactly what he did. Oh and to the post below by Jsingood, we could talk about the issues but Kerry still hasn't talked about anything for 4 months now. Bush isn't too far behind him I know but after this convention Bush will have defined his position on certain issues (if he hasn't enough already) and not have pissed away a whole week of having the ear of the whole country to establish some issues. 4 more years is what I see in this country's future.

If you really want to get into semantics, "girly man" and its evil twin "manly girl" are not gender-epithets. Girly man (as well as manly girl) means that a person possesses unfavorable qualities. Girly man is only demeaning to a man, manly girl demeans a woman. A man should desire to be a manly man, just as a woman should desire to be a girly girl.
EDIT: Replace "girly" with "womanly" if you're offended.

regardless it just sounds wrong for a man that california decided to represent them, I mean c'mon arnold, this isn't hollywood.
I beat maria gave him a mouthful.
but wait he isn't even a native of california, nor the united states. I guess that makes it all alright.
I don't know I want somebody in office that is intelligent, as well as, speaks intelligently. that's something you say on the sidelines, not while publically speaking. sounds like he just wants to be a good ol' boy when what we need is some real answers and decisions. giuliani come to california.

I agree that is was not a very intelligent sounding comment. But, what I found even more amusing was that Arnold made it sound like Nixon was a great republican. I would think the republicans would not want to associate themselves with Nixon any longer.

I took more issue with the fact that gay advocacy groups jumped on him claiming that he was insinuating that they were gay. Ironic considering that they're always trying to dispel the traditionally notioned stereotypes about gays. By automatically inferring that he was more or less calling the girly men "gay" is as conformative to stereotypes as you can get. But anything to get ahead I guess.

arnold used this phrase a few weeks ago in cali
the dems accused him of being homophobic
the dems were percieved as overly sensitive whiners and arnold got a 5% bounce in approval ratings.
this was bait for the dems, and apparently they bit it hard.

honestly, Koan, he did it just to make liberals and the media mad. I know it, you can see it in his eye when he says it, he got that twinkle, and then rammed the sword in. it was hilarious.
I don't understand why women would be mad abuot it...? i mean, the feminists probably have their panties in a wad, but i...don't get it.

If it offended you...it was for one reason, and one reason only, and that is the fact that you didn't like what he was saying. Anyone with half a brain knows he wasn't making fun of women, homosexuals, or anything. He was calling them wimps, plain and simple, and is so down to earth that he will use a joke, that was created for the sole purpose of making fun of him, to get his point across.

What I'm saying is that ideally we should ALL be discussing issues logically and rationally. Actually, I was condeming my fellow democrats for avoiding the issues and focusing on meaningless catch-phrases. Wherever you fall in the political spectrum, it's easy to see most politicians, and both major candidates, have avoided clarity and complexity in favor of propaganda. There's no reason why we should too. Bush has had four years to make a point, and has failed to do anything but skirt issues with ignorant babble. I just saw an excellent example on a Today show interview a few mornings ago:
"The terrorists were planning 9/11 long before we invaded Iraq."
Another sentence which means jack shit and has absolutely no point, and completely avoided the question, but hey, it gives the impression of some sort of connection or something.
And, no, I really don't expect much more from the democrats, but at least Kerry and the democrats addressed the health care issue and idiocy of cutting taxes for a select rich few during war time during their convention.

Them: "All his policy and actions are stupid"

I do not think it was a smart move, like someone said, since he got some heat for it a few weeks back. However, as a Dem I personally do not find it offensive or rude. I think people are being overly-sensitive about the comment. Yeah, it's a dumb thing to see...but I do not feel like he is being sexist or homophobic. I think a lot of people need to just wipe their tears and get over it, personally.
But again, it's a dumb comment.

Sounds like the conversations I used to have with my Republican family members about Clinton. A single individual is hardly a good sample, nor is a lack of articulation an indicator that he or she is actually wrong about Bush.
There's a lot of whining going on in both camps.
