Haven't seen this posted yet, just heard about it.. shitty news to hear..

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former President Bill Clinton will undergo heart bypass surgery as early as Saturday.
Clinton was in New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Friday undergoing tests for chest discomfort.
Clinton's office issued the following statement:
"Former President Bill Clinton is being admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital today and is scheduled to have bypass surgery.
"The former president went to Northern Westchester Hospital yesterday afternoon after experiencing mild chest pain and shortness of breath. Initial testing was normal and he spent the night at home in nearby Chappaqua, New York. After undergoing additional testing this morning at Westchester Medical Center, doctors advised he should undergo bypass surgery.
"Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and (daughter) Chelsea Clinton will be with the president in New York City."
A close friend of Clinton said the former president called him to say that his doctors had advised him that he needs bypass surgery.
The friend told CNN that Clinton's condition is serious and the former president had told him he might have a quadruple bypass.
No known history of heart trouble
Clinton, 58, has been in good health with no known history of heart problems.
A medical report in January of 2001 showed he had an above-normal cholesterol level and borderline high blood pressure.
During his presidency, Clinton had a reputation for eating fast-food meals.
Since leaving office, Clinton has lost weight and he told talk show host Oprah Winfrey that he had gone on the South Beach diet.
Clinton had been scheduled to tour the New York State Fair in Syracuse Friday afternoon with Sen. Clinton.
In recent days, he has continued to maintain an active schedule.
Last Sunday, Clinton delivered what was described as an energetic and forceful sermon at Manhattan's historic Riverside Church.
On Monday, Clinton was on the campaign trail in Pittsburgh, stumping for Rep. Joe Hoeffel, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate running against incumbent Arlen Specter. (Special report: America Votes 2004, Pennsylvania's races)
And on Wednesday, Clinton participated in a book signing in New Orleans.
During that appearance, Clinton was asked about his weight loss after leaving office.
"I work out a lot and I went on the South Beach Diet for a while, that helped, but the combination -- I have a wonderful man that comes in two or three times a week and we work out," he said.
"You know when you get older you really got to watch it. It gets harder. The older I get, the harder it is (to lose weight)."

So fucking what? there are hundreds of people getting bypass surgeries every day that arent in the news. Just cause hes an ex president doesnt mean I need to hear about every single ailment he has on the news. Doesnt mean I want him dead, but i just seriously think its not news worthy.

You're right. People have bypass surgeries every day and we don't hear about them. But people aren't all enormous public figures, and people don't all enjoy secret service protection, and people don't all live to be Presidents.
You could just as easily argue "People die every day, why are we hearing about soldiers dying in Iraq?" The reason you hear about it is because of who they are and because the events surrounding their deaths are considered significant by a great number of people, if not by yourself.

theres a difference. Its not who theyre talking about, its who theyre excluding. Public figure or not, it matters just as much that my neighbor gets a bypass surgery than it does Bill getting one. And yes, death is death, but its what death is more gloryfied, whos life meant more, that bothers me. If youre going to talk about the soldiers who died, what makes their lives any better than the innocent civilians who had NOTHING to do with this war whos lives are never mentioned? theyre both in the wrong place at the wrong time and yet ones a hero to the media.

I think that part of the reason it is getting as much coverage as it is, is that Clinton is expected to be campaigning for John Kerry this Fall and this surgery may affect his ability to do so.

It would not be as significant to as great a number of people if they covered your neighbor as opposed to Bill Clinton. Personally, I thought a bit much was made of it, but I would certainly expect it to make national news.

honest question: how much of that would be REAL significance? The American public is prone to drama, and whats significant to them is only such because the media tells them so.
Now, if what was mentioned was true, and that this is significant because of how it may effect Bills campaigning for Kerry, then I will concede to that. But at the same time, its being pushed as more than it really is, regardless of that point.

how much media coverage this got was ridiculous. I was watching TV yesterday and the news cut in with a 15 minute "update" that basically said "he's okay." I mean fucking A, "he's okay," that takes 2 minutes tops to report. I don't see why they cut in at all, but for more than a quick "he's okay" is stupid.

So when Reagan died, was that not a big deal either because people die every day and Reagan dying is no more special than your neighbor dying?

I'm going to have to guess............
He was president of the United States of America for 8 years. Yeah, I think that's why he's a household name around the globe. Yep, I'm sure of it now. President. USA. Bill Clinton.
Ladies man, too. That got a lot of press. People know him for that too. Don't blame him one bit. IF I were the most powerful leader in the Free World, I would definitely be gettin' hummers in the Oval Office. President Matt's desk---Black phone: Regular calls to senators and stuff. Red Phone: You pissed me off, your country is now a smoking crater calls. White phone: Chicks to give me head.
I would have picked a better lookin' intern, though. But I guess with all those security gates and secret service, one can't get too picky.

Correct. And until then, it matters to other people, if not yourself. Nobody said clinton was a saint; I'm pretty sure they just said he was having heart surgery.

I am glad to see that he is doing ok, but Clinton just got put in the non-factor catagory. I don't think he can recover enough from a quadruple bypass to campaign for anyone.
Lets just hope he gets better...loosing two former presidents in one year would stink

While regrettable, this is a prime example of how the axis of evil has infiltrated American life with their delicious Big Mac sandwhiches and triple thick milkshakes. I will bring these evil doers to justice... or bring justice to them.

Why do you post threads about Tim Reynolds concerts? There are TONS of other bands having concerts, why is he special?
Just like people here are interested in Tim, people in this country are interested in Clinton. Like him or not, he is 1 of only 43 people who have ever led this country. Did it need special break in bulletins? No. But to say it shouldn't be on the news is ridiculous.
