http://www.suntimes.com/sports/mariotti/920521,mariotti042908.article

When it comes to a tirade parade, former Cubs manager Lee Elia is in a class by himself.

Thanks to an expletive-filled rant 25 years ago Tuesday when he chastised Cubs fans.

Elia committed the all-time error of protecting his players from people who ultimately paid his salary -- Cubs fans -- though he had every right to be angry that they were firing bottles and garbage at Keith Moreland and Larry Bowa, two hotheads who engaged the crowd with shoves and barbs after a 4-3 loss dropped the team record to 5-14.

Thus launched the most infamous and enduring rant in Chicago sports history, some distinction in a town that has employed such characters as Mike Ditka, the '85 Bears, the Blizzard of Oz, Dennis Rodman, Norm Van Lier and Bryan Cox. Da Coach may have thrown a thousand tantrums and Guillen may have slurred half the civilized world, but they've never lost their lids to the point of taking on a home crowd. Not only did Elia do precisely that, in an era before Wrigley Field was marketed as a party-hardy funhouse, but the manager became profoundly personal by stereotyping 9,391 afternoon fans with socio-economic insults and mixing his tirade with 54 profanities, including 45 of the 'f' variety.

I hope to god Pie is ok, I think we need him. Light bulb is starting to turn on for him. Plus his defense, arm, and speed as a pinch runner can't be over looked. If his recent success at the plate was for real. We'd have 4 outfielders I'd have no problem starting.

In fact I like Reed in LF, and Pie in CF with Reed leading off more so then I like Soriano in the lineup.

And I reitterate: why the hell is Kevin Hart allowed to pitch? I don't hate him at all, I have no ill will towards him. But he's just a rook, and he can't pitch in 38 degree weather obviously. Just let Marshall and Lieber pitch in the mid innings.

Oh and the more I think about it, why was Soriano still in? You plan to end the game there, it's Soriano's first game back. Put him in CF, and slide Reed over to LF. The top of the 9th should have been the best defensive team out there.

It's the way we lost. It was that Woody blew the save and that we lost a game we should have won to the Brewers. I know we're going to be good. But it's NEVER ok to lose a game when you should have won.

When you're a fan that cares very, very deeply about the team, it hurts when you lose. Especially when it's a game like this.

Soriano needs to step the fuck up. Lou needs to drop his ass if he can't produce this year. That being said it is only the beginning of May, lets just relax here a little bit, we have a little losing streak going and it happens, better to get it out of the way now and not in September.

Oh c'mon, he was a big reason for the success last year. Yeah, those two plays were fucking AWFUL. He's having a slow start, made worse by an injury. The guy will bounce back, and he's lacking confidence. The depressing this is that....this is just the same old thing for the Cubs. Good players doing stupid things, tons of errors, 4 walks in the first five batters, 3 runs in the top of the 9th....I mean, it's sickening, but you can't put it all on Soriano. Derek made an error in that inning, too.

Well then you know nothing about baseball. Soriano won us a few games last year, and he will probably do the same this year. Give him a break, he just came off the DL. In a few days he'll get back into it, I'm sure. Today was unacceptable, for sure, but he's not the only one at fault. He's the only one with an RBI today, just so you know.

I don't know what Soto is really thinking. I mean, he watches DeRosa get a walk and decides to come up swinging at the first pitch on the low outside corner? What is he trying to do with that ball? I just don't understand it.

Marmol was the only pitcher left. Lou was saving him because it's an away game. If the Cubs got the lead the next inning, he'd have to use him then. If he used him then, and they got out of it, he has to pitch the rest of the game. And Marmol is a one to two inning specialist.

Molina is one of the best there is though when it comes to throwing out baserunners.

Also good at being hot tempered and hobbit sized. Best at walking to the mound as well.
