Really starting to hate Reed Johnson. He is fucking worthless. He cant hit the ball
He's a 4th outfielder, who can get hot. That's why we need Pie in there everyday so he can get his bat going. I don't care if he struggles now, we need that bat to come around by Sept/Oct.
But something has gotten into Soriano, he's not as fast as he used to be. But he's balls out trying to do something. When's the last time we've seen that kind of effort with that dive at home?
gocubsgo3822

Derrek Lee has a nine-game hitting streak. ... After hitting a two-run homer Saturday, Kosuke Fukudome is hitting a robust .438 with 11 RBIs in 18 home games. ... Carlos Marmol threw a perfect ninth, extending his scoreless streak to 10 2/3 innings.

with as far behind as the brewers are and as bad as they look like they might be for a while, i'd almost rather have them beat the cards right now. but gagne does suck. so does izzy. neither team wants to go into the ninth with a lead for fear of having to use their closer.

Went to the game on friday with some friends from ohio. THey had a great time, and of course we won.
Drank more in a 36 hour period over Thursday and Friday than I have in the last 3 months.

I heard on ESPN 1000 today that the Cubs are interested in Jim Edmonds (if he clears waivers). What do you think? They would have to deal Felix Pie (I'm not sure how many options he has left), but I would like that platoon in center field and it gives them a decent left handed bat

I think this is one of the first times that trading or getting rid of someone has really become a tough decision. I love the CUBS roster right now, and I like Pie, why can't we keep them all? I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in Edmonds, but Pie is 23 while Edmonds is 37. Edmonds has been struggling all year, spent time on the DL, and so I don't know if he is capable of turning things around. I say no.

Getting rid of Pie and picking up Edmonds? They would have to be mental. If Pie could play everday in center, his bat would come around. Right now the guy is a 4 tool player, while Edmonds doesn't really have anything going for him.

Pie can still go to AAA if need be, if he was out of options. There's no way in hell Hendry would cut/deal Pie to make room for a washed up Edmonds. Seriously Edmonds can't hit, his batting average is in the .100's and Pie's is in the .200's. Pie has INSANE speed, and spectacular defense. We'd lose those things by adding Edmonds.
When you have Soriano, Pie, and Fukudome in the outfield, it's a defense that's VERY hard to run on. Because everyone of them has great arms. Since we all know Pie is not going anywhere. That would mean they'd get rid of Reed Johnson. While he's not an All-Star he's someone who fits with the team, and wouldn't bitch about losing playing time to Pie when his bat comes around.

Zambrano's ERA went from 1.80 to 2.03 from this start, but still he's been great this year. I just love how this team always seems to EXPLODE after giving up a lead. If the Brewers big lead holds, the Cubs will be in 1st place after this game.

Gallagher's spot start earns him Cubs' rotation spot
A change in starters Sunday figures to be the start of a change in the Cubs' rotation, with rookie Sean Gallagher joining the starting five and Jon Lieber moving back to the bullpen.
That is manager Lou Piniella's plan after liking what he saw from Gallagher on Sunday in his last-minute call to start.
''We have a decision to make on what we'll do, but I don't see why we can't pitch Gallagher against Pittsburgh on his next turn,'' Piniella said. ''We'll see. I have to talk to [pitching coach Larry Rothschild]. But I think he'll stay in the rotation and Lieber will move into the bullpen.''

Cubs poised to sign Edmonds; Pie on way down?
It might not happen quite as fast as the Reed Johnson deal at the end of spring training, but the Cubs appear poised to sign veteran center fielder Jim Edmonds soon after he clears waivers Wednesday.
That would mean a demotion to the minors for touted prospect Felix Pie, who entered Monday with a .222 average and strikeouts in one-third of his plate appearances. The lefty-hitting Edmonds and right-handed Johnson would share center-field duties.
General manager Jim Hendry wouldn't comment on Edmonds, 37, because he technically remains property of the San Diego Padres until he clears release waivers.
But multiple Cubs sources said the team plans to pursue Edmonds, and one said Edmonds has told his agent to talk to no one before he talks to the Cubs. The Cubs have considered a left-handed bat a need for weeks.

I seriously will kill someone if we send down Pie for fucking Jim Edmonds. WHY IS GALLAGHER GETTING A SPOT!? I like the kid, but why not Sean Marshall??? He had a good ERA in 2006 until the oblique injury. His ERA ballooned into the 5's late in the season because he sucked when he came back.
Then he post a 3.92 ERA as a starter last year, and I don't get why if Lieber isn't going back to the pen, how Marshall hasn't earned a shot. I mean Gallagher is cool and all, but he has a 6.48 ERA this year to go with a career 7.83 ERA. Marshall started for the Cubs in 06 and 07. We repay him by not even giving him a chance to show he can do what he did last year.

I just don't get what's wrong with the Pie/Johnson combo. It's gotten us this far, do we really think Edmonds will make us better? He's hitting .178 with a .265 OBP versus Pie's .222 AVG and .286 OBP. The difference? Edmonds is declining, Pie is getting better. Pie is someone who if he doesn't start, is a GREAT pinch runner and defensive replacement with a rocket arm.
Most of Edmonds great catches, were because he misplayed a lot of balls he should have gotten under. He made routine fly balls into Sports Centers highlights. We don't need his defense, at 37 Pie is easily the better option. Do we think the 37 year old Edmonds would have robbed that home run like Pie did?

I agree with the Edmonds pick up being low risk. Lou must have zero faith in Pie at the plate, at least currently, so picking up another leftie to compliment Reed seems like a logical move. I started thinking after the game tonight that the Cubs may be better off if Pie toys around in the minors, works on his bat for the majority of the season, all the while preparing himself for that late season roster call up. Sure, you will be losing his speed and glove on the grass and the diamond, but maybe it is for the better.

You really think they'll move Fukudome and Soto down in the order to make room for Jim Edmonds?
Edit: If he sucks, he might cost us games. I doubt we make a judgement after one game. They'll give him some time. During that time we might go "Oh that ball right over the middle Reed would have went the other way with, instead of striking out." or "If Pie was in, that guy would have been out at the plate by a mile. Instead we trail late." There is a risk in that he will mess up the lineup. We're all hitting, we're all patient. We don't need Edmonds.

I should have made it more clear. I believe he should be playing consitently in the lineup, but if Lou isn't about to consider it, maybe this option would be better than spot starts and pinch running duties. Who knows. He should be in the lineup anyway. Been saying this for months.

looks like we will sign edmonds on wednesday.... I jsut hope we all give him a chance... And hope Carlos doesnt kill him...
"The Cubs have interest in recently released center fielder Jim Edmonds, who is likely to clear waivers Wednesday.
Edmonds, who turns 38 on June 27, hit .178 with a .265 on-base percentage for the Padres, and the general consensus seems to be that he's well past his prime. The longtime Cardinals star hit 29 home runs in 2005 but fought leg injuries the last two seasons before being traded to the Padres last winter after San Diego failed to sign Kosuke Fukudome.
General manager Jim Hendry could not comment, but sources in the Cubs organization insist he will jump at the chance to sign Edmonds if he's available."

Tribune Co. Chairman Sam Zell has rejected former Gov. James Thompson's secret plan to acquire and renovate Wrigley Field for at least $400 million without raising taxes and now plans to package the Cubs and their landmark stadium in a private transaction, sources said Monday.
Together, the Cubs and their real estate could command $1 billion, based on recent sales of professional teams. Zell opened talks with Thompson, chairman of the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, in hopes that selling Wrigley to the state would make the team more valuable.
But sources said Zell has rejected the state's proposed terms because it relies on a novel and untested financing plan: the sale of individual seats at Wrigley as if they were condominiums. The idea is called equity seat rights and has been advanced by Chicago area business executive Lou Weisbach, who has applied for patent rights on it.
Zell, Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney and their advisers have concluded that the equity plan and its tax ramifications would violate both the Internal Revenue Service code and the rules of Major League Baseball, the sources said.
They said Thompson's plan called for selling several thousand seats to raise money for ballpark renovations. The purchase of the ballpark could have been covered by state bonds backed by future ticket revenue.
But the plan could have driven away potential buyers of the franchise. The next Cubs owner could have been denied revenue from the best seats in the house.
"It's not a matter of, is there enough money in it for the Tribune Co. This plan violates so many rules that the parties have to live under, it doesn't even get to first base. It doesn't even have a chance to succeed," said a source familiar with Thompson's plan.
Another person close to a bidding group for the team said, "From what I understand, the state's offer was getting kind of crazy. It was creating complications for the next owner of the team."

In case anyone cares, Zell rejecting that deal helps us in a big way. If Cuban buys the Cubs he wants the team and Wrigley. He doesn't want to have to deal with the "owner" of the park. He wants it like it is now, and he's already said he wouldn't change Wrigley. He thinks it's great. Though I'm sure he'd update the restrooms, concessions, and locker rooms.

There is a lot of optimism to be had...here's my only concern. Away games. We've got the best home record, and yes, it's good to have the home field advantage, but you need to win on the road. Until we can prove to consistently do this, there will still be that one question mark of "Can they win on the road?"

While most of your post was correct... this is bullshit. Edmonds read the ball off the bat so well that he would play shallow and take away bloop hits because he could get back to most balls that were deeper. Although it ocassionally led to a ridiculous catch because he had to get back. He had an uncanny ability to stop looking at the ball after he figured out his route, and then look back at the last second and snag it. Go look at some of his highlight catches, and you'll realize that's false.
On the other hand... He lost his ability to read the ball off the bat as well when he had a concussion against the White Sox. He hasn't been the same. Along with age comes injuries, and between the injuries and the post-concussion symptoms, Jimmy Baseball just doesn't have it anymore. Will he better than Pie? Probably. A lot of Jim's problems are from playing in San Diego's Spacious ballpark, on offense and defense. Where do you think Brian Giles homerun power went? It died in San Diego's alleys. Wrigley's smaller. But I wouldn't expect too much. Edmonds is pretty washed up... Coming from a big Edmonds fan.
I really wish he would retire, and not go out in a Cubs uniform. That is pure disgrace for a true Cardinal ball player. It'll make it hard to cheer for him when he comes to Busch as opposed to if he had come in as a Padre... he'd have gotten one of the loudest ovations out there.

I'm starting to think it will, they are covering it on ChicagoCubs.com and they don't report on jack unless it's almost 100% true. Though this interesting:
If the Cubs do add Edmonds, Pie would likely return to Triple-A Iowa. He was batting .222 so far, which included a .286 (10-for-35) clip in his last 15 games after opening the season .143 (4-for-28) in his first 14 games.
Isn't hitting .286 in his last 15 games tell you he's IMPROVING!!?!? Dunno but it seems like he should get more playing time, not demoted.

How is Edmonds taking away playing time from BETTER players not hurting our team? How do you not understand that logic? This isn't 2001, Edmonds is VERY OLD. Hitting a buck something. He's not even a good defender anymore.
Edmonds will get Pie (who's hitting better, and light years better defensively, not to mention what he adds as a pinch runner) sent to AAA. He will also cut into Reed's playing time. Do we really need to add a struggling player to our lineup? What are the positives? I'd seriously like to understand how you view any of this as positive.

Johnson has only started about 6 games this month. He's had a couple of pinch hit appearnces. Granted he only has 4 hits this month. The hits he has had have contributed to our winning. Edmonds actually has more hits this month, with a monsterly 5 hits.
But I'll let Johnson slide becuase in April he had 24 hits (.296 AVG in April) to Edmond's 11 hits (.153 AVG in April). While on the season Reed is hitting .254, he's got a respectable .341 OBP. Edmonds is only hitting .178, with a .265 OBP. Johnson even has a better SLG% .316 to Edmonds .233
I mean I get for whatever reason you like Edmonds. Maybe you still envision him as being good like he was back in his Cardinal days. There's a reason he's being released mid-season by the team with the worst record in the MLB. Reed brings something to this team. He has decent speed, and gets on base.
Why are we the number 1 scoring offense? Because everyone is getting on base. Edmonds might kill a big inning with a strike out, or double play. Where as Johnson probably won't hit it out of the park. He'll at least likely draw a walk.
Projeted Numbers
Jim Edmonds: 149 Games, 516 AB's, 34 Runs, 92 Hits, 11 Doubles, 0 Triples, 6 HR's, 34 RBI, 57 Walks, 138 K's, 11 SB's, 6 CS's to go with a .178 AVG, .265 OBP, .233 SLG, .498 OPS
Reed Johnson: 158 Games, 533 AB's, 81 Runs, 135 Hits, 23 Doubles, 0 Triples, 5 HR's, 72 RBI, 36 Walks, 77 K's, 5 SB's, 9 CS's to go with a .254 AVG, .338 OBP, .322 SLG, .660 OPS
That's if they keep on pace with what they've done. Though I think it's pretty obvious it's likely Johnson will do better then his projected stats. The soon to be 38 Edmonds? I'd like to see some evidence he could turn it around.

Suicide is an option. The Cubs should never lose a game to the Padres ever again unless it's against Jake Peavy.

Don't worry, if we get Jim Edmonds we'll never lose again.

just like to point out you guys have won like 4 games in the last 4 years to the padres. Including this year.
thats not a very good number. With Peavy and Maddux still to go... might end up being a 1-3 series. if the Padres offense shows up (and i mean Adrian Gonzalez of course, he is the only padres offense)

Jim Edmonds is a closer to becoming a Chicago Cub.
The team reached a deal contingent on the left-handed hitting center fielder passing a physical. He's expected to have that on Wednesday and, if all checks out, would likely be in the lineup for Thursday's series finale against Gred Maddux and the Padres.
We'll have more to come.
