Time? This isn't a Hootie and the Blowfish concert, we don't want "time." We have a VERY productive squad, why bring in a worthless hump like Edmonds?

Damn you're right!
Another homer and 2-2 tonight.

He's so streaky.

Its like when he's cold a minor-leaguer could make him look silly.
But when he's hot its like "damn that guy just beat the shit out of that ball"
And you'll say like 15 times in a week.

I feel like i am living in the twilight zone... I am legitimately excited about Jim Edmonds coming aboard. This is a guy that I have hated since he became a red bird when i was in eighth grade. Eight years later IF he has something left in the tank (which both our scouts and Greg maddux think he does) this is the type of upgrade that could do wonders for our ball club.

Do not be surprised if tomorrow Dome is hitting second where he should be and Edmonds is hitting fifth. THis will help Aramis and Lee (who is slumping) by putting an OBP machine in front of them. I think this will really help our offense. We were not going to play Pie anyway for whatever reason so this transaction needed to happen. We paid him 284,000 for one year. and if it doesnt work we will cut and run and never look back. There is only positives in this. Except for if Carlos punches him in the eye. I am about to link two articles. The first of which is the one which talks about why we are signing him and the second of which is the players reactions....

On another note I love Lou and Hendry but I think they have really mis managed Pie... This is pathetic that we are sending him to AAA. At least there though he can hit consistently and hopefully get his stroke back....

It pains me to say this but can we please give #15 a chance.... ANd by a chance i mean a 2 week stretch.... That is all. I respect peoples differences. But lets give it a chance.

Prior watch

Former Cub Mark Prior may not pitch until after the All-Star break after having a setback last week while rehabbing from shoulder surgery in Arizona.

"He felt something in the back of his shoulder, in the capsule area," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "He's going to go have [orthopedist James Andrews] look at it. I'm sure he's going to be down for a while. It's probably doubtful he's going to be active the first of June, which was our hope this winter."

Prior turned down the Cubs offer of one year and an option, signing a one-year deal for $1 million and around $4.5 million in incentives.

"That's kind of why we structured the contract the way we did," Towers said. "

"We felt it was a $1 million gamble to get 10 to 20 starts out of him if he was healthy, which we still may [get]. And it would be worth it."

You can all call me crazy, but I think the Edmonds deal will work out. Just give it a little time.
You're as bad as gocubsgo3822 who promised an explanation on why Edmonds would be a good singing. He said it was good enough to make me realize the error of my ways. Yet all we get is how he's had a love/hate relationship with him since 8th grade.

I hope you're not in that bandwagon. This guy is NOT in his prime. He's OLD, he's 37. Very few players age well, and the one who do are your VERY elite players. This guy should be with his kids in the stands, not screwing up the Cubs lineup. Lets break this down. We'll go with the age he'll be at the end of each season. End of this one he'll be 38.

2005: (35 Years Old) .263 AVG, .385 OBP, 29 HR's
2006: (36 Years Old) .257 AVG, .350 OBP, 19 HR's
2007: (37 Years Old) .252 AVG, .325 OBP, 12 HR's
2008: (38 Years Old) .178 AVG, .265 OBP, 1 HR

I mean god bless him if he turns it around, but the guy is suffering from something called AGE! He's not a young man, his skills are declining. This isn't Julio Franco. It scares me that the team with the second best record in baseball. Sent down Felix Pie for a guy who's 15 years older, and has a worse batting average and fielding skills.

I get Felix wasn't playing, and if Reed is still starting with Edmonds usually on the bench. Hopefully that won't turn out to bad. But this team was doing well, I don't see the need to mess it up. Keep in mind not everyone on the Cubs likes Edmonds. Some of the Cubs/Cards games used to get heated. Why mess with chemistry?

The addition of Edmonds could make for an interesting situation in the Cubs' clubhouse. During a 2004 game with the Cardinals, Chicago pitcher Carlos Zambrano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6559) twice hit Edmonds with pitches twice and was ejected.

Edmonds also homered in that game and stood at the plate to admire the flight of the ball, angering Zambrano who began to yell at him as he neared the plate after running the bases.

"I just told him to run the bases and don't try to be cocky," Zambrano said after that game.

Zambrano declined comment Wednesday when asked about the arrival of Edmonds in the Cubs' lineup.
Zambrano isn't the only one who's had issues with some Cards players. Why bring in a guy some of our long times Cubs have issues with? I'm sure when Edmonds is botching balls in center field on Reed's off days. Zambrano won't be wondering why the better back up in Pie isn't in there.

Maybe you're right, he'll come in and do well. But I've NEVER seen as much excitment over signing a guy to a league minimum contract, who was placed on waivers that was hitting .178, while Maddux is likely to get a standing ovation. Edmonds is just as likely to get booed. Though I think they should start Edmonds tomorrow to let him try and do damage against a team that released him.

I agree with everything you sayh i really do... but he will probably be better than Reed in the long run and he probably will do alright... and if not Felix will be up in two weeks which in the mean time will let him work on his stroke and get his shit together with regular ABS... I see this as a best ofboth words.

Either A) Edmonds is alright and we have another decent LH bat in our lineup OR B
0 He sucks we cut him and its like a DL trip for Pie except for he was able to get consistent ABS and get some constitency in his swing and he will be better for us later.

Would not be upset with the fans tomorrow when we most likely will boo him when he is announced. But i think in all fairness we should give him a chance... THat is all i have to say...

What if being sent down for a 37 year old hitter batting .178 destroys Felix's confidence? What if his bad vibes effect your Zambrano's and Wood's. Guys who have been known not to like him in the past. What if after he's gone, those vibes remain? What if his sucking cost us games? I mean for everyone calling this low risk. I think there's some things that are of concern. Mainly how his play effects W's and L's and the Clubhouse environment.

Normally it wouldn't be a big deal, but everyone is meshing so well together. Just scares me to be bringing in a guy who could mess things up. Edmonds won't get a chance. He'll get booed, but if he hits and keeps hitting. He'll eventually get accepted. But he's going to have to kick ass to do so.

Where does this guy hit in the lineup? I know you said 5 in a previous post, but that be a joke. Until he proves otherwise. He doesn't deserve to bump Fukudome, Soto, or DeRosa down. So I'm actually thinking here's the new 8th hitter.

Totally agree, but pro baseball players aren't your normal people. Most have never had a real job. As most high school athletes don't, and they go from that to the minors or college baseball. The ones who do make it to the majors have egos more times then not.

So you get 25 of these guys together, and things have to work well. I think we all know, that in a work enviroment we all just do our jobs. But if you like everyone it makes it fun. Just in case anyone is wondering: Matt Murton was batting .440 (11-for-25) over his last seven games.

Edmonds is pretty unnecessary, in my opinion. Moving Fukudome to 2nd in the order really doesn't do all that much, because Theriot's on-base percentage is exactly the same as Fukudome's. So...who cares. Plus, it's nice to have some extra speed on the bases at the top of the lineup. Things have been working well with the lineup that's been going out there, lately. I don't see how Edmonds is any improvement whatsoever over Reed Johnson. It's not an improvement, at all. It just makes them worse. There really isn't much risk, but I wonder how they think this can work out. If Johnson continues hitting .250 with a .350 OBP....Edmonds probably won't match that, and as far as defense goes, we've all seen what Reed Johnson can do in the outfield.

Totally agree, but pro baseball players aren't your normal people. Most have never had a real job. As most high school athletes don't, and they go from that to the minors or college baseball. The ones who do make it to the majors have egos more times then not.

That is a very good point. Zambrano is a bit of a head case and if our new player misses a catch I could see him losing it. That said however he is now a part of the team and us as fans I think have to give him a chance.

If he is terrible I am pretty sure Lou will not let him play but I guess we should at least give him a chance.

Once again I will clarify I did not want him but he is here so we should all just deal with it for a bit.

I really hope they don't move Fukudome to the two hole over Jim Edmonds. Everyone on the team is hitting better then he is at the moment. If we got a legit 5th hole hitter, with 30+ home run power then I'd say we do it. Though that will one day probably be Soriano.

You can all call me crazy, but I think the Edmonds deal will work out. Just give it a little time.

Time? This isn't a Hootie and the Blowfish concert, we don't want "time." We have a VERY productive squad, why bring in a worthless hump like Edmonds?

I said "a little time". Like, a week. ;)

I'll still be around here, so if this turns out to be the most horrible deal ever (which it won't), I'll stand up to fire. Edmonds platooning with Johnson, I just have a feeling this is going to be good.

How long do we give Edmonds? Two weeks? A month? Until the All-Star Break?

There's a reason the guy was hitting .178. If we play .500 ball over the next month, it's on Jim Hendry for screwing with chemistry and talent.

I'm mad about this.

EDIT: But in the world of good news, we knew he'd come around but man, is Soriano on fire or what. With him hitting like this, our offense is ridiculously stacked. D-Lee is slumping a little right now, but I like Soriano hitting leadoff because of the depth in our lineup. And Theriot can clearly hit in the two-hole.

Cubs fans are so fickle. If Cedeno or Soriano happen to struggle, people will blast them. If they are playing solid, they will praise them. Either way, at least the guys are getting a chance to prove themselves on the field. Let Edmonds' play determine whether he fits or not. Hendry thinks he will, and he sure as hell knows more about baseball than everybody in this thread.

I think with Edmonds now on a winning team he will be surrounded by performers, which might help him out of this rut. He will be pitched to differently with runners on base ahead of him, probably be more patient at the plate like the rest of the Cubs, etc. Hopefully he performs well. He has had a great career, and I'm sure he is capable of doing more than his share despite his early season woes in SD.

He hadn't walked anybody since April 13th....so I don't know what that is supposed to mean. He never walks people. Throwing it over the plate, though....really?? That's how you give up home runs. Howry's game is to paint the corners with his fastball.

I just meant with a lead I don't mind people hitting it. I hate when we walk people up runs. Basicaly I said that despite getting rocked I did not mind his performance because with a big lead it is ok as long as it is over the plate.

Ah that was a great game to be at. Just got back. I was sixth row by the plate. Too bad we lost by 14 ft. Lee could have redeemed himself for shitty at bats, but noooo. Oh well.

If this lineup ever totally clicks, we could be unstoppable.

This is a very likely possibility, yet I still worry about how we'd do under pressure against the Brandon Webbs of the league in let's say, October :shrug

Still a loooong way to go, but I love the look of this club.

Alfonso Soriano can't remember being as hot as he is now. He went 5-for-5 and had his second consecutive multihomer game. Soriano is hitting .541 (20-for-37) during the homestand and has four doubles, seven home runs, 12 runs and 15 RBI.

So, I don't wanna jinx him or anything, but I don't think I've ever seen someone as locked in as Soriano is right now.
He is exhilirating to watch as not just a Cubs fan, but a baseball fan right now.
His bat is lethal.

Currently .301 means that he has raised his average 137 points in a span of just over 2 weeks and 17 games, since coming off the disabled list May 1.

That is unbelievable.

Go Cubs!!!!!!!

DMBZeppelin
05-19-2008, 08:32 AM
So, how are the Cubs 10 games over .500 and owners of the second-best record in the majors? For starters, they lead the NL in batting average and runs scored, and they have the third-best ERA in the NL. The Cubs have outscored their opponents by 71 runs this season, the largest margin in baseball. Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster both have ERAs under 2.50, and Kerry Wood has held the bullpen together with 10 saves.

Now, add a healthy Alfonso Soriano to the lineup. Soriano, who hit .192 in April, went 21-for-40 (.525) on the homestand, raising his average from .188 to .296. He also had seven home runs and 16 RBIs. He had two-homer games on Friday and Saturday, helping the Cubs win for the 11th time in 12 games against Pittsburgh.
