Too bad the umps screwed Soto. The replay showed he CLEARLY hit a home run. Soto being the man beast said 'fuck it' and legged out an inside the parker. I still can't get over the Cubs having an elite catcher like this.

Good work Marmol. That was a HELL of a job. 1st and 3rd, nobody out, thanks to f'ing Worst. But Marmol comes in and gets Tejada, Berkman, AND Carlos Lee.

Soto's inside the park homerun was great! He's quickly becoming one of my favorite players. Edmonds catch was great as well, I take back half the bad things I said about him...I'll take back the other half when he starts hitting a little better. As far as Wuertz is concerned, I wouldn't mind just dropping him. Thankfully Marmol was there to clean up his mess.

YES!!! That kid is going to be a man beast. He just needs to get a little more seasoned. Seriously he throws in the high 90's, and has some nice stuff. Steve Stone was big on him when we got him. Said he could be our surprise player who contributes a lot.

We've been great against Pittsburgh this year so far, but they aren't a pushover. They really don't have much pitching, but they have some really good young position players who can really hit.

Fox headed to DL; Ascanio to get call-up

HOUSTON -- The Cubs' pitching carousel continued Monday night with the news that reliever Chad Fox will go on the disabled list today with irritation in his pitching elbow. Prospect Jose Ascanio will be called up from Class AAA Iowa to take his place.

Earlier in the day, the Cubs put demoted starter Rich Hill on the seven-day minor-league DL because of upper back spasms -- and also to give the command-challenged lefty a mental breather.

The short-term impact of the moves is that the bullpen gets younger. Young left-hander Sean Marshall has moved firmly ahead of Hill for a shot at being the second lefty the Cubs have wanted to insert into the rotation -- to better align a pitching staff that has a right-hand-dominant bullpen -- since sending down Hill two weeks ago.

''I would think [Marshall] would need at least one, possibly two more starts down there to really build up his stamina so we don't have to have him do that here,'' manager Lou Piniella said.

Ascanio, acquired from Atlanta in the offseason for left-hander Will Ohman, has a 2.29 ERA and nine saves as Iowa's closer, with 23 strikeouts and eight walks in 21 2/3 innings.

I'm really loving Ascanio's AAA numbers. Thing I've been wondering about, if Marshall is coming back soon then who's out? If anyone recently read where Hill stood, of the current starters in AAA:

1. Marshall
2. Hart
3. Hill

Piniella has said Gallagher will stay in the rotation if he continues to pitch well. So does this mean Marquis might be out of the rotation soon? He's said before he doesn't want a pen job. So I'm guessing he'd be traded, if he has any trade value. We all know how horrible he is in the 2nd half, so I say I'd be sad that he's gone.

So how does everyone feel about this rotation that might be here sooner then later?

1. Zambrano (R)
2. Lilly (L)
3. Dempster (R)
4. Marshall (L)
5. Gallagher (R)

Among all MLB Catchers:

3rd in runs
3rd in hits

Great 1-3, extremely shaky 4/5. I don't think they'll trade Marquis...it's hard to think Gallagher or Marshall will be a whole lot better. Marquis has had a few decent outings and an ERA under 5, so I think they stick with him a bit longer. However, trading him does make sense.

You know, I actually still like Rich Hill over Sean Gallagher. Gallagher is nice, but I don't know about giving him 20-25 starts.

Well....this isn't really an issue because Gallagher is a righty and Hill is a southpaw. Personally, I've always liked Hill and I think he's got better stuff than Marshall, but it seems like he might not be all there mentally. He has been just awful this year, and Marshall has been quite solid when he's been up.

Yeah it would be rather ridiculous.

Meanwhile I am already done with Edmonds. Johnson and Pie should be back platooning. Pretty sure Pie would have throw Tejada out at third in their big inning making it two outs with only a runner on first and a chance to get out of the inning.

Also Dempster just missed on a bunch of pitches so I was not to upset with his performance. I think that he got the wrong end of a bunch of calls.

Holy crap I have not been paying attention to the standings:

CHC 28-18 (-)
STL 27-21 (2.0 Games Behind)
HOU 26-21 (2.5 Games Behind)
MIL 21-24 (6.5 Games Behind)
PIT 21-24 (6.5 Games Behind)
CIN 21-25 (7.0 Games Behind)

The Pirates tied with Milwaukee? Dusty's Reds right behind? When did Milwaukee get so far behind? When did Houston get so close to the top?

If he had another bat or two in his lineup of 1 bat (him) 3 ok bats (kooz, giles, iguchi) and 5 crap bats (you pick the padre). he would put up huge numbers.

he hit a ball tonight i thought wouldnt land.

EDIT: footage is on Padres.com its pretty graphic, after they get the first face shot of CY on the ground bleeding from his broken nose they dont go back. I was there and he had blood running down his shirt all the way to his pants.

With recently acquired Jim Edmonds finishing a 1-for-11 series in his first extended chance to play, rookie Micah Hoffpauir got his first major-league start and delivered a pair of doubles for two of the Cubs' five hits during their 5-3 loss to the Astros at Minute Maid Park.

''We're looking for some left-handed hitting here that can drive the ball,'' Piniella said. ''If this young man can, we'll find a place for him in the lineup.''

But look for Hoffpauir to get a shot to earn more time. And Edmonds might start to run out of time if he doesn't pick it up quickly. He's only 2-for-15 with two singles in four starts since signing last week after being released by the San Diego Padres. And while he flied out deep the opposite way in the fourth inning, he turned on a fastball in the seventh, only to watch it fall short of the warning track in right.

''We need to see improvement with the bat, to be perfectly honest,'' Piniella said of Edmonds before the game. ''He needs at-bats, and we're going to give him as many as we can.''

Holy hell, Pie is hitting .043 in 6 games back in AAA. He was hitting around .285 his last 15 games before being sent down. I wonder if getting demoted for Edmonds destroyed his confidence.

Edit: Though he's probably just pressing, he knows if he hits he'll be back. Especially with Edmonds doing anything but hit. I still think it was a horrible move to demote Pie for him. It didn't improve the team, it made the defense worse, and it might have made Pie worse.

"The only thing better, if not more automatic for the Cubs these days, is having the Pirates on the schedule -- a team they've outscored by 40 runs in 10 games (81-41)."

"While working on the answer, consider that the Pirates actually have a better record than the Cubs if you throw out the 10 meetings between the teams this season -- nine of which have been won by the Cubs after a 12-3 rout at PNC Park on Friday night that included a season-high 19 hits by the Cubs."

Double switch no good. But I thought the game was over earlier than that. If the bunt goes down in the top of the 13th we probably would have won. However it didn't. I don't understand why we did not intentionally walk Bay though. There was nothing to lose and it would have created the force at home. I guess that is why I am not a MLB manager though.

Hope we can get them tomorrow.

I am so pissed off right now.

Blowing saves against the Pirates two days in a row is not acceptable.

Oh me too. Nothing against Marmol all he did was get the guy to fly out and win the game.

Soriano just could not make a routine fly ball catch.

What an awful game.

Losing 2 of three to the pirates is unacceptable.

"In that same piece, we find that Derrick Turnbow has "suffered a near-total command meltdown" in Nashville. In 6 outings, he has pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits, seven earned runs, and a jaw-dropping 15 walks! Still, there's no plans for his release. Writes Haudricourt"

thats just insane, that guy has an arm but it is just sad to see what has happened to him. I thought he was going to be a dominate closer for a long time a few years ago, guess I was wrong.
