Why don't the Cubs bat Fuk leadoff?
I was thinking about this last week.
Fuk has displayed that he does a great job of getting on base, working the count and not swinging at bad pitches.
He also has good speed, baserunning skills and hits the ball hard, but not often with home-run power.
Soriano says he is most comfortable out of the leadoff spot, but I say, you know what? Fuck that guy until he is most comfortable playing left field and catching routine foul balls.
But seriously, I'd rather have a guy with his power and feared bat in the middle of the order than leadoff. Why not give a guy like that a chance to knock more runners in?
As well, Soriano does not have a good OBP and is a free swinger.
It would give us the best chance to have runners on base with the big boppers up.
I think the lineup would be at its most productive and dangerous like this:
Fukudome
Theriot
Lee
Ramirez
Soriano
Soto
DeRosa/Fontenot
Edmonds/Johnson/Pie
Pitcher
I think that's a really nasty lineup.
Thoughts?

I'd rather have Fuk's batting in the middle, so he can knock people home.
But he gets on base a lot more than Soriano, and is more selective. So if you put Soriano in his place, with his greater power, he can knock in guys like Fuk who are on base all the time.
Not to mention Theriot, the speedster, and Lee and Ramirez, who all have much higher OBPs than Fonzie.

I would support the Fuk switch.
He seems like he would be a good lead off man.
After all Soriano does have a lot lead off home runs that don't really mean much most of the time. If he was batting even just second I think it would be more collectively productive for the team.
The Dome has been one of the most, if not the most consistant player thus far this year. Lead off would be a good spot for him.

One reason...Soriano will cry like a little bitch if he doesn't get to bat in his precious leadoff spot. Nothing more, nothing less.

i am going to say something a lil controversial but dome = 40 million down the drain.... i know we signed him for 48 but he cant hit with any authority and MLB ptchers have figured him out.. Just pound him away low and outside. He cant do anything with it. I have seen more pathetic swings in the past 2 weeks from him than the rest of the team combined.

He's batting almost .300, on base % is almost .400, leads the team in walks and triples, 3rd in hits, 4th in runs, and he also leads the outfield in assists iwth only one error on the year. He's in a little bit of a slump right now, but he is as legit as they come. He's played for a long time already, and will adapt to what he needs to in order to be more productive. Pitchers learn from previous mistakes, then Fukudome makes mistakes and learns from them, it's a cat and mouse game. Just throwing low and outside isn't going to get the job done, he'll adjust. Edmonds isn't here because Dome is performing poor lately, he's here for experience to the youngere players and to have another left handed bat in the lineup. He's batting .376 at home, and only .207 on the road, maybe it's b/c he is used to the same Wrigley setting for his at bats and not used to the different ballparks around the league. This can definitely be tough for a new player, foreign or domestic. Blah blah blah ehhhhh Go Cubs!

I think July 31st we should go after Milton Bradley for CF or RF and shift Dome to CF if we need a bat...
i like dome but he needs to start making adjustments. it seems that the pitchers have adjusted to him. and no what to do with him. I hope that this changes.
As far as #15 he was brought in because lous obviously worried by the fact that we have no lefty power prescense. We can debate all we want if #15 is that (hes not) but he was brought in for that reason..

i just dont think dome is all that great right now and worth 12 million a year. i love the cubs but i think we might have made a rash decision. I just think he might hit 8 home runs with 50 driven in. thats not worth 12 million. And as his batting average his dropping so will his OBP... I think its very likely that by the end of the season he will finish with a sub .800 OPS. Thats not good for 12 million..
I hope he starts driving the ball with authority to prove me incorrect :D

NO. You should have stopped there, because the rest of your post was just wrong after that.
Actually your whole line of thinking about Fukudome is off.
He's coming back down to earth after having such a hot start.
Yeah guys have started to figure him out a bit, but thats to be expected with any guy they've never seen before.
I still believe he can and will be a .300 or better hitter this year.

Do we want to talk about Chase Utley's May? He was off the charts in April and has come down to Earth as well. I know the two are incomparable and agree that Fukudome has not proven to be a power hitter worth $12 million a year, but I'd rather have him on my team than not have him.

05-27-2008, 07:45 PM
Honestly, I can't disagree more either. We have plenty of power hitters (Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Soto). It's guys like Theriot, Derosa, and Fukudome who keep us in ballgames when our power hitters are slumping. So far this year, when our home run hitters are hot, we've been unstoppable. That's why we're about 20-3 when winning by four runs. However, there have also been plenty of times when our singles and walks have won us the game. And as far as salary goes, 12 million a year is great for someone with an OBP of .400 . Look at Ichiro, he's getting around 15 mil a year for batting around .320 each season. Yeah I know Fukudome is far from being called Ichiro, but I believe there is a lot of potential.

yes if you lose the ball in the sun it is a hit not an error. People lose balls in the sun. Shit happens. Everyone on here hates on SOriano all day long but without his home run that catch doesnt matter.
Interesting article i found
"Piniella said there's no "time limit" for Edmonds to prove he can hit, but added: "The only problem I have here as a manager is I've got a young man named (Micah) Hoffpauir here, and I want to see what he can do also, so it creates a little bit of a situation for us, for me as a manager.
"Outside of that, there's no timetable on anything. But, this kid has had two good springs for us and he's hit the ball well, and we've got the luxury of having him here while Daryle Ward is on the DL, so we'd like to have a little clarification there also."
Judging by the Piniella pause, there may be some clarification sooner than we think. "

ok i am getting a lil bit angry now... seriously there is no need for malicious attacks. I blled and die cubbie blue just like everyone else here. There is no need to question my baseball knowledge and call me an idiot. the facts remain hat since may 1 he has had an OPS of aroun .600 which wont gt it done for a corner outifelder. I also never said that Edmonds is better than him.
What i said was that lou obviously doesnt believe that DOmeis the left handed power bat which is why we signed Edmonds (Hes not either and i hope s released soon (hello adam dunn hello milton bradley))
I am really a lil po'd that i am getting so much shit for making a statement based on facts. I normally count on this thread as the one place to not catch any grief and yea.... Yall can disagree with me like i do with yall without insulting my baseball knowledge.
On another note
CUBS WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 in a row!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gallagher was fucking awesome tonight!!!!!! A better throw by Soriano and he gives up no runs. We came back tonight when our offense looked dead and i like that that shows a lot about the team
3 stars of the game
1. Gallagher (kid is going to be special just wait)
2. Dome (2-3 with a walk an RBI and a double and single
i am glad you made me look foolish :) ))
3. Rami- just doing what he does best hanging in there and driving the ball
Also Ronny did well as well as Soriano
Lets break out the brooms tomorrow!!!!!
A good way to keep yourself from catching shit is to post a little bit more intelligently. Not just your opinions (Adam Dunn? Really?), but I'm talking about grammar and punctuation, excessive swearing and exclamation points, etc.
Also, useless Jim Edmonds is just taking up space on tihs team. The dude does nothing but leave guys on base. Get rid of him, move Fukudome over and give Hoffpauir a few starts in right field. It couldn't hurt, and I think Fukudome would be serviceable in center (not as defensively solid as Johnson or Edmonds, but what can you do). You have to give Hoffpauir a chance, he's been up for 7 games now and only has 10 at bats.

No, it has to do with the fact that you come off as an idiot because of the way in which you post.
The lack of defense with Dunn and Soriano as your corner outfields would be very bad for a team that has been having defensive issues lately. Otherwise, sure, you have a point. I also think it's laughable how you think Fukudome is worthless after 50 games. Especially considering he's drawn more walks than anybody on the team and has a .300 average. The RBI's and home runs will come with time. Just as pitchers are starting to figure his zone out, he's adapting to major league pitching. He hasn't lived up to his billing? Give me a break. If he drops down to .275 with 50 RBI's at the end of the season it'll be a bust, but he's having a bit of a slump right now.

How do you explain saying that he's not a run producer?
D Lee: 41 runs
A-Ram: 37 runs
Fuk: 32 runs

Now he may not drive in a lot of runs, but he is a pretty solid run producer.

i agree wth you clay he has gotten on base well but his power is not exactly what i thought and he is not the ichiro/matsui hybrid that we were lead to believe he was. He might be an Iwamura/Ichiro hybrid. But i dont see his power being much more than 8-10 HR... He is ideal for the leadoff or second hole.

When I say he has more walks than anybody on the team, that's 33 walks. That's a stat.
I saw your stats on Fukudome in May. Yeah...and? The last couple of weeks he's been in a big slump, but that kind of thing happens to everybody. If he doesn't get it going again in the next week or so that'll be cause for a bit of worry, but the guy is a solid hitter and he has shown it all year. I don't think that if you've seen the guy play day in and day out you can think it's going to be a huge issue.
Why don't you take a look at Derek Lee's stats during the month of May? .234 avg/.274 obp
In the last week or so he's starting to break out of the slump, but you have said nothing about how bad D.Lee has been.

You know, it's very unusual that he hasn't hit more home runs, because I believe he hit something like 30 homers last year in Japan, so that's very weird. I would have to guess that as it starts getting warmer, he's going to hit for more and more power.

Fukudome is on pace for 100+ runs, has an OBP of .406.
As long as Lee, Aram and Soriano do what they are capable of, Fuku is more than we could have hoped for. It's still early, and he'll have his slumps, and the lack of power is a concern, but to imply he's worthless or not meeting expectations is, hmm, incorrect.

Well, I've never been a big Soriano hater, and I think he's an integral piece to the ballclub. But his defense since his return from the DL this month has been a bit....curious, and that's why people hate on him. And it's a bit worrying the way he's been running lately. When they had the runners moving and he was on first when Fontenot hit that weak grounder scoring the tying run, he seemed to be moving very slowly.
Also, as to D. Lee. C'mon, driven the ball with some authority? He's been hitting A LOT of lazy fly balls. In May, he's got 13 RBI's to Fukudome's 9 RBI's. So they've both been bad with runners on.

I think the last Cubs post on Nancies was in 2005. (Slight exageration)
Aside from the awful defense by Soriano, the .319 OBP is awful for a leadoff hitter. If he doesn't hit for power, he isn't providing much spark.
Theriot's value is underrated tis year. While both Soriano and Lee went through extended slumps, he has been hitting for average consistantly, setting the tables where others have not.
I still remain concerned about our pitching. I'm not liking what I'm seeing from Lilly, and I can't believe Dempster can keep this up all year injury free. We need to start breaking away from the pack in the division soon.

Ward, who said his first BP since going on the disabled list with a bulging disc went fine, is eligible to return from the DL on Thursday but likely will need at least several more days, if not a rehab assignment into next week.
Barring another injury somewhere, the looming return of Ward sets the stage for a showdown between rookie Micah Hoffpauir, who has gone 4-for-10 with a walk in limited time since replacing Ward on the active roster, and Edmonds, who is only 3-for-24 since signing as a free agent two weeks ago after being released by the San Diego Padres.

Fukudome hit 13 homeruns last year in 81 games with a .294 avg. Everyone keeps on saying that he isn't worth/is worth 12 million a year, but I thought he was only making $7-8 million this year, would that change some of ya'lls minds? He ranks 6th in the NL in walks(32), 10th in OBP(.406), is hitting .301 and is 3rd on the team behind Lee and Aramis in runs(32) and hits(55). He's 4th in runs created. He's also 2nd on the team in stolen bases. I think he's worth whatever money the Cubs want to pay him, just as is every other player on the team right now because we are 10 games over .500 holy shit.
Edit: 7 guys are making more money than Fukudome this year, he is only making 7 million. I don't know where the 12 million is coming from but oh well, maybe I'm missing something.

Geo Dome and Soriano are all in the lead!!!!!!
Derek Lee is in third same for Ramirez and DeRosa... THeriot is in 4th but could easily with enough voting win the spot.
Soriano is the OF leader Dome is second.
Soto is beating McCnn by over 100,000 votes.
Time to go vote.

All Kenny Lofton has done over the last 3 years is bat an average of .310 and steal an average of 26 bases a year, and still plays good outfield.
Why would we not want that kind of production right now?
He may be 40, but he played great for the Indians last year, and has still got the skills.

Here was my ballot from just now that I posted in the MLB thread.
AL
C- Joe Mauer, Twins
1B- Justin Morneau, Twins
2B- Ian Kinsler, Rangers
3B- Alex Rodriguez, Yankees (Yes I know he missed a lot of time, but there is no other 3B in the AL having a great year and he is head and shoulders better than all of them.)
SS- Derek Jeter, Yankees
OF- Josh Hamilton, Rangers (Continues to be my favorite non-Cub player)
OF- Magglio Ordonez, Tigers
OF-
DH- David Ortiz, Red Sox
Write-In- Carlos Quentin, White Sox (I'm glad to see you remembered to write him in as well, Lewis)
NL
C- Geovany Soto, Cubs
1B- Lance Berkman, Astros (his power numbers and average speak for themselves, but when the hell did he become a basestealer too? He's got 10 already this year!)
2B- Chase Utley, Phillies
3B- Larry Jones, Braves
SS- Miguel Tejada, Astros
OF- Carlos Lee, Astros
OF- Nate McLouth, Pirates
OF- Jim Edmonds, Cubs
If they had a DH- Albert Pujols, Cardinals
AL Starting Pitcher- Cliff Lee, Indians
NL Starting Pitcher- Edinson Volquez, Reds
Hahaha, just kidding about the Edmonds thing obviously. I voted for Xavier Nady in that last OF spot.

:thumbsup:thumbsup I was devestated when he couldnt stay healthy. I really thought we had a hall of fame dominant pitcher. DOwn the stretch in 2003 he was the best pitcher in baseball...
In the second half 11 starts for a 10-1 record... 1.52 ERA... 95 K-16 BB
with a WHIp of just over 1... Amazing

I agree with all of that. He had great movement on all his pitches.
A fastball in the mid to high 90s that dipped, a 2-seamer in the 90s that fell off the table and made guys look silly, a nasty 12-6 curveball, his mechanics were perfect, he had stamina, his composure was great.
Damn.

Favorite Player: Ryno
I must say, I liked Sosa too. He made watching the Cubs bearable during the bad years in the 90's. Sad to see how he invited his demise
Lofton discussion: We picked up Edmonds for a few bucks with the specific hope of getting some power from the left side. It's not working, and the experiment needs to end soon, but I would rather Pie or even Johnson full time over Lofton at this point.
All Star Game: I still can't stand the voting process for the all-star game. What's the point of allowing us to vote 25 times per day or whatever it is? It's a popularity contest based on the size of the market and name recognition based on previous years stats. I fill out one or two ballots every year with the people who deserve to be there...and that's that.
As of today, I think Marmol, Z and Dempster should be invited...with Soto being a coaches selection if he takes 3 catchers. Lee is just at a killer position in the NL. I don't see how he can jump ahead of either Berkman or Pujols. Fuku would make a nice story, but he's not an all-star as of today.

Mine, by far, is www.TheCubReporter.com (http://www.TheCubReporter.com)
Great, intelligent basebnall minds run the site with spectacular coverage of the minors by someone who goes to basically all the Arizona Fall LEague and Extended Spring Training games, and by a resident doctor who posts detailed information explaining various injuries.
They also have an in-game chat that is always fun and filled with heavy testosterone when 30 of us think we make better managers than Lou.

Luck is something that happens by chance. You don't CONSISTENTLY win by being lucky. You do that by being good. They're tied for the best record in baseball. They're 1st in the ENTIRE majors with 296 runs scored. They're 6th in the majors ERA wise, and 2nd in the NL ERA wise. They are also the only team in baseball to not have a 3+ game losing streak. I mean that right there almost boggles the mind.
They even have national recongition for being good. ESPN.com has them 1st in their power rankings. That's saying a lot for a website/network that's biast towards East Coast teams. How many teams have 6 and 7 hitters like Soto and DeRosa? This team is VERY good, and just wait till they get hot again.

Anytime your ace doesn't have his best stuff, goes 8 innings, and only gives up a run. You have to win those sort of games, and the Cubs with some great at bats late really pulled through.
I just realized we're 32-21, 11 games over .500 is that a season high? I know we've been at 10 before.

Exactly. Great pitching almost always beats good hitting. The Dodgers have a solid pitching staff, and you have to really credit the Cubs for giving up only 3 runs the entire series.
And about getting lucky always....give me a break. Did we get lucky last weekend when Soriano lost a ball in the sun on what should've been the last out of the game? That was some real bad luck there, and as for last night, luck had nothing to do with it. We just went up against some great pitching and when we finally got a chance, capitalized.

Honestly, I think the shirts and bandanas/headbands/whatever are pretty stupid and really just show the typical American ignorance and belief in stereotypes. Is it racist or really offensive? Probably not, but you'd have to ask someone like Kosuke about that.
Also, I'm really hoping for the offense to really break out tonight. Be nice to put up 10+ runs to support Marquis.

That being said as long as they can use the bear legally which they might be able to because of the cow it might be legal based on the first amendment. While I think that is stupid and wrong free speech is something that i dont like abridging in any way no matter how repugnant. Now if any of the vendors decide to step on Cubs property arrest them for trespassing. Another remedy might be to push for the city to strip their licenses so that they cant sell that garbage.
I hope this is resolved but i fundamentally believe no matter how abhorrent the shirts are they have a legal right to sell them as long as they arent doing it on CUbs property and are doing it with a license.

In other news.... Neal Cotts was recalled from Iowa and Jose Ascanio was sent down... interesting. I thought Ascanio did alright. Lou must have wanted another lefty... WHile COtts sucked last year he has had phenomenal AAA numbers this year @ Iowa
27 innins Pitched... 2.00 ERA.....33 K 10 BB.... 23 Hits allowed.... 3 saves in 19 games..

Yeah, this is a weird move IMO. Those numbers are pretty darn good, though.
As for the t-shirt thing, I think it's stupid that they wouldn't allow them to sell the shirt. I agree with you about first amendment rights. In my opinion, they should be allowed to sell the shirts as much as they'd like, but if the Cubs organization doesn't like it, just don't let anybody wearing the shirt into the park.
