Boo to only one run having the bases loaded with no outs.

I've noticed we seem to suck at cashing in with the bases loaded.

Rob Neyer thinks that Oakland did pretty well. i think that the trade is pretty fair..... WTF is wrong with Demps control that inning?

devilandthelord
07-08-2008, 10:27 PM
Yeah, what the fuck was up with the 4 walks that inning?

That's enough of that Demps.
Calm down.

Not only did he give up the run, he probably just shortened his night by at least an inning by throwing so many damn pitches that inning.

"So after two blockbuster trades rocked the National League Central, did the Cubs or Brewers come out in better shape?

According to the computers at AccuScore, which ran thousands of game simulations with the new players, the Cubs increased their chances of winning the Division.

When the Brewers traded for CC Sabathia on Monday, the probability of the Cubs winning the Central dropped from 68.1 percent to 64.6 percent for a difference of 3.5 percent.

But after the Cubs traded for Rich Harden, the Cubs' probability of winning the Division has gone up to 68.9 percent.

So according to AccuScore, the Cubs made the better deal.

Harden vs. Sabathia Trade Impact

Probability of winning the NL Central

CUBS 68.9 percent, up 4.3 percent from before the trades

BREWERS 26.2 percent, down 3.5 percent from before the trades

Probability of making the playoffs

CUBS 91.3 percent, up 2.8 percent from before the trades

BREWERS 65.1 percent, down 0.7 percent from before the trades."

We had other offers on the table. One of them involved Marquis, but missed that deal. Anyways we all know that Hendry loved Bedard. Here's what we offered:

Gallagher, Murton, Patterson, and Pie

for

Bedard

So we got a guy with similar potential, and another GREAT 25 year old arm for the pen. Now Howry can move to middle relief. With one trade, and giving up way less then he should. The rotation and pen are now a lot stronger. The 3rd ranked pitching staff in the NL reclaim it's previous position of 1st.

zep where did you see this?

You've never felt this kind of excitement because we've never been this good. We did just trade a little bit of our depth, but not all of it. This is still the deepest team in the National League.

Oh and Jeff Samardzija is in AAA and according to our minor league director. He could be ready for MLB action this year. Not that we have room in our rotation for him. But if someone struggles, he could be a guy we see sooner then later.

I know what can happen. I've had so much heart break, that I almost expect it to happen again. But screw that, World Series or bust. I've lived through 2003, and I was all hush hush then. Jynx this, curse that. The hottest team in October usually wins. But unless we're ice cold. Who the hell is going to stop us?

Not to mention we DOMINATE at home. If the NL wins the All-Star game, Cubs would have home field advantage through the playoffs. Unless whatever crap team emerges from the NL west stops us. In the east the Phillies can score, but they don't have anything close to our pitching. In the central, I'm not worried about teams that might not even make the post season knocking us off.

Harden had heard his name mentioned in trade rumors.

"I had heard talk about it, but it's still always a surprise," he said, minutes after learning of the deal. "It's a bit of a shock. But they're a good team, and they have a chance of doing something special.

"It's tough to prepare yourself for something like this. Every year there's rumors, but you really never know."

Hendry made it clear to Beane that he wanted a top-line pitcher for the rotation.

"They weren't looking for starting pitching," Beane said. "They were looking for Rich."

Harden spent one month on the disabled list April 10-May 11 because of a strained right shoulder, and has been on the DL six times since 2005. The Cubs doctors contacted the Athletics medical staff before the deal was finalized. Harden, whose last start with the A's was Sunday against the Chicago White Sox, was 3-0 with a 0.68 ERA in four starts against the National League this year in Interleague Play.

DMBZeppelin
07-09-2008, 06:58 PM
Oh and I heard a clip of Hendry talking on the Score. He said with Rich they're going to be cautious. Because with him they're going to think of October and go backwards. He said that once in a while they may give him an extra day of rest, or even skip a start all together.

I think it's just fantastic that he said "Think of October and go backwards." and I might be paraphrasing that slightly. Instead of go he might have said work backwards. Either way I like how they're thinking.

DMBZeppelin
07-09-2008, 07:11 PM
Well Gallagher was going to be in the pen as a long reliever soon anyways. Gaudin is going to take over that role. Marshall will be out of the rotation. This is probably his last start Friday. Here's the rotation after the ASB, and this is all according to Piniella.

1. Lilly
2. Zambrano
3. Dempster
4. Harden
5. Marquis

But one thing the Cubs know -- one thing everyone in baseball knows -- is this: When you get Harden to the mound in one piece, he's as dominating a starting pitcher as you can locate on this planet.

Since May 11, the day Harden came off the disabled list, he's tied for the major league lead in strikeouts, with 77. Guess which pitcher he's tied with?

Sabathia. Of course.

Hey, you were expecting maybe Justin Germano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7334)?

But the bigger news was over in a different column on Harden's stat sheet -- the all-important Games Started column.

That's because he has made it through 11 starts in a row over the past two months without missing a single turn. And that, unfortunately, has been a phenomenon no one has seen much. Kind of like Comet Kohoutek.

It was the first time Harden had made that many starts in succession since 2005. And it's that injury history that already is making those ever-edgy North Siders nervous, after way too many injury-rehab updates on their previous saviors, Mark Prior (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6787) and Kerry Wood (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5982), the past few years.

In fact, one baseball man called Oakland's decision to trade Harden now -- while he's pitching great and the A's are still in a race -- a "serious red flag." Meanwhile, in a potentially related development, a scout we surveyed reported that Harden's velocity hasn't been quite the same in his most recent couple of starts, since his eight-inning, 11-strikeout two-hitter against the Phillies on June 26.

But the Cubs have watched every pitch he has thrown for weeks. They saw him hit 96 mph on the gun Sunday with their own eyes. So clearly, they'll take their chances on the odds of getting him out there 14 or 15 times between now and Sept. 28.

True, Harden comes with no get-your-four-trade-chips-back health guarantees. But unlike Sabathia, he's also not a rental. The Cubs get to keep him for a year and a half. Plus, they add very useful Chad Gaudin (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7199) to their bullpen -- and, potentially, to their rotation in case of (a) emergency, (b) a Harden health mishap and/or (c) a patience meltdown by Lou Piniella with, say, Jason Marquis (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6493).

"The Cubs," one scout said Tuesday night, "have the best rotation in the league right now" -- CC in Cheesehead Town or no CC in Cheesehead Town.

Oh and I forgot to mention. They were speculating on what Harden and the Cubs brass said. But it might be possible they don't let Harden pitch till after the All-Star break. That's just speculation, but if you believe all the scouts about him wearing down his last two starts. That might be what he needs.

Watching the game now, and I'm kind of wondering "What's next?". You still think we'll try going for a Randy Wolf (6-8 4.38 ERA) or Greg Maddux (3-7 3.90 ERA) to replace Jason Marquis (6-5 4.78 ERA). We were linked to both before this deal. I also don't think they'd cost that much.

I know Piniella has said before he wants another lefty in the rotation. Which is why it seemed Marshall was going to stay in over Gallagher before we got Harden. Though I'm not sure WHY we have Marquis in there. Are we shopping him? He's usually falls apart in the second half.

I also wonder if we'll retarget Brian Roberts with the O's now out of the race, being 10 back as of this post.

I don't want Marquis in the rotation at all right now.

And I don't really think we need Brian Roberts. I mean we got 3 guys who can second right?
DeRosa, Cedeno and Fontenot. And I like all of them.
So I'm ok without Roberts, except for his speed and base stealing which would be nice.
But other than that I don't really mind at all.

The only downside was that it was disheartening to see Marmol struggle the way he did and Kerry have to come bail him out to make just one more out. :(

DeRosa has cooled off, Fontenot isn't an everyday guy. Cedeno goes on streaks, but his numbers are down. Roberts can hit at Wrigley, we saw that when we kicked our asses. For whatever reason he's the only guy they'll move Soriano out of the lead off spot for.

The main reason I brought up Roberts is because I could see us going after another bat. Catcher, 1B, 3B, LF, and RF will not be going anywhere. So CF, 2B, and SS are the only places you can upgrade. Out of those I think Theriot is the least one in need of replacing. Though I actually prefer Theriot at 2B. He has GREAT range there. Which is usually the case for anyone who has SS range.

My thoughts on the talk of the last few pages in here:

1.) I agree that I'm always a little uneasy when Marquis is on the mound.

2.) Fuk needs to relax.

3.) Marmol needs to get it together now.

4.) Z is still the bomb.

5.) I agree that Wood gets a lot of easy saves, but he has had quite a few tough ones here and there. He's still clutch no matter what.

6.) Does Aramis really deserve to be in the Allstar game? He went 0-28 recently. I mean not that he hasn't been good all year, but shouldn't someone else have squeezed in there ahead of him somehow?

7.) Edmonds deserves to be in the Allstar game.

8.) Derosa has been rocking socks off lately.

9.) I'm kinda drunk gotta go sleepy time now, gnight.

Ahh, San Diego. Translated into english means a whale's vagina.
Pie was struggling HORRIBLY when he went down to AAA. Then they sent him to the instructional league in Mesa. He hit .667 there. Now he's back in AAA, and got his batting average up to .247 on the season. He's hitting .311 his last 10 games in AAA.

I still think sending him down messed with his head. Hitting .285 your last 15 games and you get sent down for a 37 year old hitting in the .100's. Regardless if his bat comes around, he'll be back up. Which is kind of what this season has been like. When something goes wrong, it's like we have a fix for it. Pie struggles? We got Reed. Reed struggles? We got Edmonds. Edmonds struggles? Hopefully Reed gets hot or Pie is ready for prime time.

Edit: Splits tell the tale with Pie, here's a month by month thing with him for AAA.

May - .156 AVG (.229 OBP)
June - .282 AVG (.316 OBP)
July - .326 AVG (.370 OBP)

Also he's hitting .333 with runners in scoring position on the season.

How can you say while we still can? He's 23 and 4 of his 5 tools are awesome. From everything I've heard, his bat will come around. His main problem is he needs playing time at the MLB level. He got yanked from the starting CF position 5 games into the season. That didn't really tell you anything.

Not to mention last year he was a late inning defensive replacement and usually getting one at bat a game. If Edmonds loses that power stroke he temporarily found. He's better then Edmonds and Johnson. He makes the ENTIRE outfield better with his range. Especially since it lowers the ammount of green Soriano needs to cover.

Zeppelin's Fun Cubs Facts
- We currently have the largest lead of any division leader in either league at 4.5 ahead of St. Louis. ChiSox are 2nd with a 3.5 lead.
- Top 3 run differentials in the entire National League are:
1. Chicago Cubs with +110
2. Philadelphia Phillies with +77
3. Atlanta Braves with +30
- We currently own the 2nd best record in baseball, falling short of the top spot by 1/2 a game. St. Louis and Milwaukee are the only other NL teams in the top 10.
- The 3rd place winner of the NL Central could have a better record then the winner of the NL East or West.
- Cubs have the 3rd ranked pitching staff in the NL. We're up to 8th overall.
- Cubs currently have a 71.2% chance to win the division
- Cubs currently have a 17.4% chance to win the wild card
- Cubs currently have a 88.6% chance to win a post season berth, while Milwaukee has a 47.5% chance and St. Louis has a 35.6% to make the post season.
- Being 4.5 games up for best record in the National League, with only 4 to play means one thing. The Cubs will enter the 2nd half of the season with the best NL Record.

Talking with Bo on AIM, and Jason Marquis came up. Check out these splits.

April - 4.45 ERA
May - 5.53 ERA
June - 4.91 ERA

Home - 6.29 ERA, 3-3, 44.1 IP, Opponents have a .321 AVG against him
Away - 3.38 ERA, 3-2, 48.0 IP, Opponents have a .234 AVG against him

He only gave up 2 runs his last start so he has a 2.57 ERA in July, which is just one start. At least he has that going for him. Though it's quite apparent we'd be even more dominant at home without him. We're already 35-10 at home despite his suckiness.

"• Radar gun stunner of the week: Thirteen months ago, Phillies left-hander R.J. Swindle was pitching in the Atlantic League. Monday, he made his big league debut and might have set some kind of record -- for slowest radar gun reading by a non-knuckleballer. He threw five pitches clocked slower than 60 miles per hour, topping (or is that bottoming?) out at 54 on a strikeout of Carlos Delgado. Asked if he'd ever seen a non-knuckleball register below the speed limit before, one scout replied: "Not until now. My kid threw 39 the other day, so at least he's 15 miles an hour faster than him."

"• Rain delayers of the week: Ever wondered how big leaguers kill a 2-hour, 50-minute rain delay? Now it can be told. Mets relievers Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis and Billy Wagner spent all 170 minutes of their never-ending delay Sunday in Philadelphia building a boat. They used water bottles, nail files and Slim Jims to construct the hull, and cut holes in aspirin packs to serve as the sails."

Yeah I remember last time we played the Reds, and Paul Bako hit a homer off of one of our pitchers, and I just thought to myself:

"Damn, if Paul Bako's hitting a homer off you, you know you made a mistake."

We came back earlier in the year from a deficit like this. I forgot who it was against but it was like the 8th or 9th inning and we were down 5 or 6 runs and we came back.

Anything can happen. I still have hope. But not too much hope with Lieber in there.
