Do you remember the begining of the season?
Fuk was the shit. He would lead off with hits non stop and he was good for the clutch when we needed to push some people home.
I think his problem now is that he isn't seeing the pitches as good as he was earlier in the season. He used to be really patient and get walked A LOT now he's swinging at garbage.

Man the Brewers are just about as good as us at home 30-15 and just as bad on the road 21-26. This should be an interesting series later on in the month. I'm definitely going to one of the games maybe two! One at Miller Park one at Wrigley, that would be fun. None of those teams scare me. Honestly if you take the Cubs when they've been at their best this year. Not a single one of those teams could hang with the Cubs. They have the best lineup in the NL, and above average pitching. In the playoffs we won't have to see Lilly or Marquis but once or twice. Going Zambrano, Harden, Dempster over and over we'll be fine.
Honestly unless the Cubs are in a slump heading into October, there's no reason they can't make the World Series. When healthy they have the most complete team in the National League. I also believe the Cubs are the only NL team that could hang with an AL team. Given that, I also think the Cubs would probably get their asses whooped in the World Series. Look what happened when the Cubs plays the Rays and O's... not so good.

Saw this in the Suntimes
On Sunday evening -- the same night when word broke that the Brewers had worked out a deal for CC Sabathia -- Hendry indicated to Beane for the first time that he would make Gallagher available in a Harden deal, but it would create a problem: If Gallagher was traded, the Cubs wouldn't have the kind of depth they needed to deal with an injury.
"Let me call you back," Beane said.
Beane had an idea. He could fill Hendry's need for depth by adding veteran swingman Chad Gaudin in the trade. He phoned Hendry back on Monday night with the suggestion. "That could work," Hendry said, and the two general managers began piecing together other parts of the trade. Beane called Hendry with a detail of the trade very late on Monday night, California time, figuring the call would switch over to voice mail on Hendry's cell phone because it was so late.
But Hendry answered the phone, wide awake. "Jim, what are [you] doing awake?" Beane asked.
"I'm just laying here on my couch," Hendry said
Also it had this
Oh, and about that dead arm thing. Checking with Fangraphs, Harden's fastball this season has averaged 92.6 MPH (http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1772&position=P). In the past seven days? 91.9 MPH (http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=4&season=2008&month=1). I wouldn't worry too much about that yet.
Murton is excited about his new opportunities (http://dailyherald.com/story/?id=216477&src=152), which means he hasn't been told yet that the A's are assigning him to their AAA affiliate in Sacramento (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/08/SPFE11LLCS.DTL).

I see he gave up a run, but he still got the save. Every closer will have off days. If he didn't have his best stuff, at least he still got the job done. Save 24 I believe ties him for the lead in the NL. Even if it caused his ERA to go up to 3.02

You know what be an awesome trade for the Cubs? Royals setup man Ron Mahay. He's 37, so he wouldn't cost a kings ransom. He has a 1.91 ERA, 14 holds, 36 K's, and a 1.19 WHIP.
I read on ESPN rumor section that contending teams have interest in him. Even though his team is crap, the AL has good lineups. Maybe we have to give up a couple good young pen arms in the minors, but oh well.
I also think we need to go and get one more starting pitcher. Another ace would be nice, but even a Greg Maddux will do. I'm not sure what's up with Lilly. All I know is Lilly + Marquis = start of a couple losing streaks.

Looking into it more. The Royals do have a pitcher the Cubs coveted last year in Zack Greinke. He's 24, but has some service time. He's ranked 11th in the AL ERA wise. 7-5 Record, 3.48 ERA, 140 K's in 124.0 IP with 36 BB. Get him and Mahay in a deal where we give up whatever. Give them Veal, and a guy like Colvin and/or Pie. Hopefully not Vitters, but if it came to that it come to that.
Greinke has 4+ years service. No way in hell he stays with the Royals. There's lots of money to be made out there. He's had some mental issues in the past, but he usually pitches well. Small market teams will usually deal a guy who only needs 1 or 2 years of service time to become a free agent. We have pitchers with low service time. Veal has none, Hart is another guy who probably is under a year.
1. Zambrano
2. Harden
3. Dempster
4. Greinke
5. Marshall/Gaudin
In this scenario you never have to see Lilly or Marquis. I know it won't happen but it's what I'd love to see. You have 4 guys pitching like aces. Marshall is solid, and Gaudin can spot start if Harden needs extra days off between starts.

I want Lilly pitching still though.
Among starters (who qualify) Lilly is ranked 39th in the NL with a 4.68 ERA. Lilly is the 75th in the MLB. Granted it was in the AL, where ERA's tend be a little higher. This is what Lilly has done since 2003.
2003: 4.34 ERA
2004: 4.06 ERA
2005: 5.56 ERA
2006: 4.31 ERA
2007: 3.83 ERA
2008: 4.68 ERA
In 2007 he had a 3.68 ERA Pre-All Star break, and a 4.01 Post-All Star break. Month by month here's what he's done for us this season:
April: 6.46 ERA
May: 4.72 ERA
June: 3.02 ERA
July: 6.23 ERA
That June is the ONLY reason he's even on our 25 man roster. I like Lilly, I really do. But he's like Javier Vasquez over on the ChiSox. Someone with good stuff, but he never really put it together. Lilly had the advantage of none of the hitters knew him early last year. That's no longer the case, and it's the AL all over again. We're kind of stuck with Lilly, but if we want a great 2nd half we need another starter. We need Zack Greinke.

greinke is good.. interesting... I dont think we have enough to get him and i have heard he is not a real long pitcher that six innings might be the max
To put his 124 innings in perspective, in 19 starts.
Zambrano: 120.1 innings, 18 starts
Lilly: 115.1 innings, 20 starts
Marquis: 99.1 innings, 17 starts
He's comparable to Zambrano in innings pitched. He's more of a work horse then the losing streak brothers have been. I think we have enough to get Greinke if the Royals are looking to move him. Because if they don't this year, they will next year. Otherwise he'll walk for a big contract somewhere.
I don't know how serious talks were for Greinke got last year. I just know we wanted him. He had a 3.69 ERA last season though he spent some time in the pen. He's 24, so I'd only expect him to get better. While I'm not sure if we can get him. We're not going to get a pitcher from a contending team. KC will have to trade him, or get nothing for him sooner or later. Which is why he sticks out to me. He's good, but his service time is adding up.

Ya, it brought down his ERA to 4.44. Which is actually lower then his 4.57 career ERA. It's about time he did well. He gave up 7 runs his last start, and 5 runs the time before that. This was from ESPN.com's Jayson Stark's article. Made me laugh because I was talking up Greinke and then I read this:
Something brewing: Had the Brewers not landed the biggest 290-pound fish in the trading pond, we're hearing they wouldn't have turned to Harden as Plan B. Their target was the Royals' Zack Greinke (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7257). That's a moot point now. But as the Brewers turn their attention to adding an impactful bullpen arm next, they wouldn't be crazy to make a run at Greinke in that role, too. His bullpen splits last year were definite closer material (.226 opponent avg., .282 OBP, .332 SLG). "For some reason, as a starter, he's been only a six-inning guy," one scout said. "It just seems like he doesn't have the mindset or the durability to finish games. When I look at him, I have no doubt he could be a real good closer. It would just depend on the fit for the club."
• Leaning left: Don't be positive the Cubs are through dealing for a starting pitcher. Lou Piniella's preference is to have two left-handers in his rotation. So if Sean Marshall (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7718) doesn't meet the manager's expectations, it wouldn't be out of the question for the Cubs to take another look at someone like Randy Wolf (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6248).
Though I'd really like to know why if Piniella likes two lefties, why is Marquis the 5th starter coming out of the ASB?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-baseball-boy-hurt_webjul12,0,5241006.story
Boy, 7, in serious condition after being hit by foul ball at Wrigley Field on Thursday
Dominic DiAngi woke up early, put on his Aramis Ramirez (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/aramis-ramirez-PESPT006037.topic) jersey and Cubs ballcap, and asked his father all morning Thursday how many hours were left before they would be sitting in the stands at Wrigley Field (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/wrigley-field-PLTRA0000169.topic). It was his first baseball game, though he'd been a fan of the game forever, as far as a 7-year-old is concerned.
Peter DiAngi got his sons to the ballpark early, in time to snap pictures in front of the marquee, find seats behind the Cubs dugout and buy popcorn and soda for boys so short they squatted on their seats to see over the grown-ups in front of them. Which might have been how Dominic got so badly hurt.
The foul ball seemed to come straight toward them, faster than Peter DiAngi has ever seen a baseball move. The frozen rope off Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/ted-lilly-PESPT004371.topic)'s bat in the bottom of the second inning was a few feet away when DiAngi saw it, much too late. He never saw it hit Dominic's head, but can't erase the image of the boy falling limp.
"It was something I'll never forget, the speed of that ball coming in and the face of my son looking up," Peter DiAngi said Friday. Adrenaline jolted the 44-year-old Frankfort man, thinking "this is bad." He scooped him up and ran, yelling, not knowing if the boy was breathing, blowing air into his mouth anyway.
Dominic was in serious condition and still unconscious Friday in Children's Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering from a fractured skull and swelling around his brain. His doctors and family expect him to live, and are thinking now about how his neurological functioning will fare when he comes around.
"We hope he'll make a speedy recovery, and look forward to welcoming him back to Wrigley Field as soon as he's ready," said Cubs spokesman Peter Chase. Lilly, who says he didn't see the foul ball hit the boy, seemed visibly shaken when told about it Thursday.
"We're past the scary life-and-death part," DiAngi said Friday, though he hasn't relaxed yet. "We have to see his reactions. We want to make sure he can focus."

4-0 Cubbies!!
Harden Stat: When given 4+ run support, he's unbeaten in his career :eek
That's an amazing stat. It also bodes well for the post season. We'll likely have home field. Not to mention at one point, not that long ago. The Cubs were averaging 6.5 runs a game at home. Anyone now if we're still close to that?
I still think we need one more starter. If we got one more guy that doesn't suck. We'd have the best rotation in either league.

^ disagree we are fine on starters now. We have 4 good ones and a serviceable 5th option

Who's your 4th? Zambrano, Harden, and Dempster are all good. I like Marshall, but the Cubs seem intent on not giving him a shot. Lilly and Marquis suck.

Lilly and Marquis are good 4th and 5th options. Both have pitched great the past month and a half, save for a bad outing for each. Since we don't have to depend on either for the playoffs, our offense can carry us all the way to a pennent.
Why the fuck is Marmol even pitching? That's what I want to know. Why is he in there? There's no reason for it. Let the damn kid rest a few days. He shouldn't even be in the game.

While I love Marshall, it's Woody time. Send him down to the pen.

Wood should be pitching. I don't care if he gets out of it. And now he HITS A GUY! Loaded again.
WTF WTF WTF just get him out! You're only making things worse Lou!!! Marmol is turning into a headcase, he needs to sit out a few days!

Marquis had a 4.91 ERA in June. Lilly has a 4.68 ERA on the season. Only because he did have a great June. He posted a 3.02 ERA that month. Though in his two July starts he has a 6.23 ERA.
History says both will suck in the 2nd half. Especially Marquis.
