That was a good game, but Soriano still needs to be a little less aggressive when he's on base. When he got on base today, I said to my buddy, "hopefully he doesn't get picked off" only half-joking...and what do you know?
But hey, it didn't matter today...great game, hopefully Aramis comes back SOON.
Zambrano always starts slow. He can't pitch in the cold or on Opening Day. He'll be in form by May guranteed.
:thumbsup agree i am not worried about him, hill is looking great.

So true, at least this early on its really counter productive, cause now everyone is going to be watcing him like a hawk on base.

i guess aramis is day to day so it shouldnt be too bad, as far as zambrano i know hell be fine this year but if the guys gonna be askin for 85 million contract as an ace pitcher, then you have to act and pitch like it year round, not just when it "warms" up

I hate when pitchers pitch great games and lose because we score no runs. This happened to Matt Clement the last year we had him. It seemed like everytime he would pitch we could not score any runs.

What a game today. Pathetic. Lilly gives us a strong outing...2 hits, 1 run, and 10 Ks in 6 innings, and we can't do anything at the plate??! I mean, where are our hitters at. Soriano, Floyd, Lee, Jones....none of them have a home run yet this season, and we are getting raped. Once again, 6 men left on base.

Today was just painful...Lead off double for Soriano and then a single for Theriot. Runners at the corners, nobody out...and the 3,4,5 hitters to bat. Between the 3 of them they could not get one sac fly or one ground ball? Ahh, it's too early to already have these Cubs blues...
BTW, Jones needs to be at least 6th in the lineup, he's killing us.

Oh, please...he hit .285 last year with 27 HR and 81 RBI...sure he strikes out a lot, but you can't argue with those numbers. With Ramirez, Lee, and Soriano also in the lineup, you would think we would be able to hit with some power and put up some big numbers....things will come together, just a rough start.

I dont' think he was ever "overrated" until this year....he made some stupid guarantees and for some reason the media picked up on it and people were talking about him and the Cy Young. Zambrano is a very good pitcher, and he's very reliable for 15 or so wins. He is a damn good pitcher, he has had a slow start, but I'm sure he'll get on track and he'll probably end up with his usual stats.

Soriano needs to earn his money, and Lee needs to start hitting some Homers. Lee's hitting for great average, but has almost no power numbers right now. If he had hit a few homers, he'd probably have about 12-15 RBIs right now and the cubs record might look a little different.

We need to get a comeback win today. Miller clearly doesn't have his best stuff, but he's working through it and if he can pitch 5-6 innings and only give up 3 runs, the offense needs to pull its own weight. This is a game we need to win.

There's a reason why the Cubs only have 8 home runs total in 14 games this sesason. It's kind of hard to hit home runs when the wind is blowing straight in every day. The homers will come, for everybody, starting in May.

Wade Miller just has to learn to work with what he has left. Once he gets a better hang of it, he'll be like a poor man's Greg Maddux I would say. Guzman is good for long relief right now. Miller is a veteran and knows how to work out of trouble.

Typical Cub fan attitude, just blame it on one guy...of course there has to be some individual who is at fault, not the team as a whole. Will Ohman has had a rough going, especially early this year, but who else could they pitch?? He gave up a run, but if the offense wasn't going to score a run, they would've lost sooner or later anyway. We had 8 innings to score another run after 5th, and we couldn't even get a hit in 7 straight innings. And you're going to blame Will Ohman?? Ok, so now you've started blaming Jacque Jones singularly, for some reason. He had a bad day. But Murton (who should be out there every day) went up swinging at the first fucking pitch every at bat and didn't get a hit either. The whole lineup went into submission after that 5th inning, and there isn't one guy who was at fault. Lou basically used everyone available, and apparently nobody wanted to win enough, or the Padres are just really really good. I'm going to go with the former.
The Cubs as a team choked. In my opinion, the pitching was the only bright spot. On a day in which nobody was really pitching well, they held the opposing team to 3 runs in 9 innings. Wade Miller was extremely shaky, but he didn't let the game get out of hand. Howry got into trouble but was able to get out of it, Wuertz pitched a pretty good two innings. Ohman was Ohman, but as far as I'm concerned the Cubs were lucky they got as many chances as they did.

I can't stand Cedeno! I think he looks like a scared little kid that has no idea what to do in a major league ballgame. I mean, I had faith and backed him up, but he just doesn't seem to have that natural baseball instinct yet. He freezes up and looks terrified when he's playing, IMO at least.
EDIT: I'm also not saying this b/c of today. I've felt like this since last season.

I'm not saying Jones is a great player, but the stats don't lie. I'm sure you saw them. .285, 81 RBIs, and 27 HR last year. That means something. .285 at the plate is a pretty good batting average these days. Pie had a pretty good first game in the majors, but I think it's funny how everyone says dump Jones and put in Murton and Pie, two guys who have very little experience. When they go in a slump, you'll be calling for their replacement as well.

You ahve to learn that Cub fans will hang anyone who dosent produce right away b/c we are so anxious to get some good people in there and dont want to wait for another Penent.
But youre right. Its still early on this season. I know it looks bad, but our first guys in the line up are doing well, the pitching just needs to catch up to the hitting and we will look like a steller team.

Have you watched these games?? The pitching has, in general, been quite good. The hitting is the problem. Some games we'll score 7 runs, or 9 runs, or 12 runs, and we win. But when we lose we can't score at all. Hitting in the clutch is the problem.

I ve been trying to catch most of them, but from what I hear they arent pitching well in like one or two innings and then the game goes down from there cause we can only pick up one or two runs a game (if were lucky).
And hitting in a clutch with any team is just luck to some point. At some point all your skill goes out the door when your the last dude to bat with the tieing run on and you gotta get him in.

I agree. I mean, the offense choked away this game. With batters on 1st and 2nd and no outs, it's a popped up bunt and then they strike out. Should've been 1st and 2nd no outs, but somehow we fucking blow that. That is the single most ridiculous play all season. All he has to do is stay on the base!!
Oh, and again, about everyone's favorite player Matt Murton. Nice job there. Jones was patient and drew the walk, and Murton comes up and swings at the first pitch, AGAIN???!! He just saw a guy get walked, why doesn't he take a pitch or two...

Corey Hart is essentially our Matt Murton. I really like both of them (Murton and Hart, and both need to play, IMO).
Yost is platooning Mench and Jenkins, so far to the tune of the best Leftfield in baseball, so I cant complain.
Jenkins vs. RHP = 1.099 OPS
Mench vs. LHP = 1.159 OPS (He's only hitting .405 right now)
2004-2006 splits
Jenkins vs. LHP = .677
Jenkins vs. RHP = .877
Mench vs. LHP = .969
Mench vs. RHP = .737
Really both guys should never see a pitcher who throws the same way they bat. And if used correctly both should have OPS near .900.
Corey Hart got off to a slow start but is now hitting .289/.364/.447 for a .811 OPS. I'd expect him to put up about an .825 OPS this year.
For reference sake, Carlos Lee, the same guy who got 6 years 100 million from Houston has put up years of
.830
.891
.811
.895
I'd expect a Mench/Jenkins platoon to be about .895 this year, if used correctly, which is what Yost (surprisingly) seems to be doing.

Ted Lily is cursed. Apparently when he is on the mound he will have to pitch shutouts if he wants to get a win. So frustrating that going into the season I figured if we needed to win games this year we were going to have to hit and hit big. Instead our pitching which I thought was going to be suspect at best has done a pretty good job but our offense saves all their production for the one game a week where they decide to score an insane amount of runs and the rest of the time don't do shit. Well Murton has done nothing. Neither has Jacque, so they've both been relatively useless this year. They will come around sooner or later. I would give Pie a chance, but I really think Angel Guzman needs to be brought back up. We are keeping the lefties Ohman and Eyre up here, but they have ERA's of 9.00 and 14.00 respectively, and I would rather see Guzman who was having a very good start to his season. We really need the game today. We need to at the very least split the first two series with the Cardinals.

Wuertz has been golden this season, let him get the last out...I mean, Cotts just walked the left-handed hitting Edmonds, Wuertz could've done that :rolleyes ....plus if Wuertz finished off the inning, Cotts could've thrown in the entire 8th inning and we could've used a pinch-hitter if we reached that spot in our half of the inning...

Howry is doing better almost every time he pitches, and Cotts has been a bit lucky. He wasn't too good today.

just got back from the game, sat in the left field bleachers and got burnt to a crisp:( as far as the game went, miller sucks bring up guzman to be the 5th starter and leave miller at long relief, id imagine pie will stay in center and murton/jones/floyd one of them will be gone because pinella has stated the need for a 12 pitcher since the bullpen is getting taxed, but this team really needs to step it up and start playing more consistently and go on a run here

At least the offense has held its own the last two games...I mean, Wade Miller is just plain bad so its hard to hold this lost against the Cubs. Hopefully the offense can keep things going and Zambrano, Hill, and Lilly can have good outings this week and we can get a sweep of the Brewers. The one good thing to take from today's game: Soriano's clutch hit. He had a great at-bat and he showed that he wants and can handle the pressure. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for him.

Tomoprrow should be a very interesting day. From everything that I have read it seems that Ronny Cedeno is going to be sent down and Rocky Cherry is coming up. Also soraino is in left. Guzman or Marmol should be the fifth if Miller blows dick again... Frustrating loss. I think one way to solve this problem would be to put theriot at SS. He started in the minors at SS and can play the position. A lineup of
LF Soriano
SS Theriot
1B Lee
3B Rammy
C Barrett
RF Jones/Floyd/Murton
2B Derosa
CF Pie
would be sick. Hopefully we can shit on the Brew Crew. Yall have a good night..

Just switch back and forth during commercials...I dont need to see every pitch of the game, especially if it's going to lead to disappointment.
Oh, and who the hell is Rocky Cherry?? Why not bring Guzman back up?
there stretching Guzman out to become a stater again, Cherry was good in spring training

should have gotten something for him and Wood why we had the chance. a 9th round minor leaguer would be more beneficial to us than either of them.

Wade Miller to the DL. Rocky Cherry up from Iowa for a 7-man bullpen. Angel Guzman will likely be up shortly to take the 5th starter's spot.
I really don't mind this at all. I feel bad for Wade, because I've always liked him. But he clearly has lost most of what he had....
