MOTHER FUCKER!!!!! I'm so pissed, I really wanted Harden to get the W he deserved. I really think Lou wanted to leave Marmol in and let him work himself out. But seriously, there's no way he'd let any other reliever struggle this much.

Honestly I don't get what the point of that was. Had Marmol given up 1 or 2 more runs, and we lose. What kind of answer would Lou have for that? "You went into the ninth with a 7-2 lead. When it got to 7-7, why didn't you pull Marmol?" because he obviously had no intention of pulling him.

Alex Hinshaw a Giants rookie had this to say about Wrigley
"You go to some parks, and the fans are just there to hang out," Hinshaw said. "Here, they pay attention to every pitch and they're involved in everything. It's like they have 40,000 players on one team. Forty thousand people want to be in the dugout slapping fives. 'Passionate' is an understatement. Fans like that are special."
In other news, I'm so fucking pissed at Piniella leaving Marmol in.

Zep you really are in the Lilly hater club... He hasnt been that amazing this year but he is a solid #4 at this point
Marshall has a 3.95 ERA right now. Lilly has a 4.68 ERA on the season. Last year Lilly had the benefit of hitters not knowing him. So it stands as his second best season ever.
2008: 4.68 ERA
2007: 3.83 ERA
2006: 4.31 ERA
2005: 5.56 ERA
2004: 4.06 ERA
2003: 4.34 ERA
2002: 3.69 ERA
2001: 5.37 ERA
2000: 5.63 ERA
1999: 7.61 ERA
As much as I'd love to believe Lilly could repeat last year, his own history says it's unlikely. He does have some good outings. Hell Marquis has some good outings. My problem is how inconsistent they are. Not to mention when they've been bad this year, they've both been REALLY bad. But you really think those numbers say "Championship pitcher?" or the guy who couldn't make the Cards post season roster. He wasn't even in our post season rotation last season. I have zero faith in those guys.

Hey Murton hit close to .350 his first year up, and even Todd Hollandsworth had his moments. I hope he returns to the 07' Lilly. But just because he did something once in his 30's doesn't mean he's likely to do it again. Especially with a track record that goes against last year.

They didn't grill him, because he had an answer for everything. Including what he thought Marmol did wrong. He also said he left Marmol in when it was 7-5, because the guy coming up was a righty. He thought he'd get out of it. Piniella said he was really impressed with Marshall. He gave Edmonds a little praise as well.

He said all he cares about was that we won.
And Zep, how about Marshall, again. Someone tell me why he isn't locked into the rotation again?
Ya Marshall is a guy who Greg Maddux was big on when he was here. Listen to Mad dog. We have so much $ spent in Lilly and Marquis. I mean this isn't rocket science.
Lilly: 4.68 ERA (3.83 ERA in 07')
Marquis: 4.44 ERA (4.60 ERA in 07')
Marshall: 3.81 ERA (3.92 ERA in 07')
Marshall is by no means perfect, but he's a solid guy. A bad outing for him he'll give up like 4 runs. Which could happen to any of these three. But you never hear "Oh well Marshall gave up 7 runs today." but I can't say that about the first two.
Also Marshall is 25, and only getting better. The arrow is going up, where as Lilly is 32 and Marquis 29. Marshall's only bad year was his rookie 06' year. Where he had a 3 something ERA until that oblique injury. After he came back he did get rocked. But his second year last year, and this year he's been solid. Yet we put people doing less in front of him.
DMBZeppelin
07-12-2008, 07:38 PM
I know some of you love Lilly, but seriously. Look at how much better we'd be on any given day going without him:
Current Rotation:
1. Zambrano, 2.84 ERA
2. Harden, 2.19 ERA
3. Dempster, 3.13 ERA
4. Lilly, 4.68 ERA
5. Marquis, 4.44 ERA
My Rotation:
1. Zambrano, 2.84 ERA
2. Harden, 2.19 ERA
3. Dempster, 3.13 ERA
4. Marshall, 3.81 ERA
5. Gaudin, 3.58 ERA

The first big series out of the ASB is against the Brewers July 28-31. Pretty big since they could make up a lot of ground on us. The projected matchups are:
Game 1: Lilly V.s. Sabathia
Game 2: Zambrano V.s. Sheets
Game 3: Dempster V.s. Parra
Game 4: Haren V.s. ? (probably McClung)
There's a series against St. Louis August 8-10. We have an off day before it. So if we wanted to, in that series we could throw Zambrano, Demp, and Haren at them on normal rest. But because Haren is going to get extra rest here and there. I doubt they will, and go with Lilly, Zambrano, and Demp instead.

"I had a lot of people tell me this was going to be a good experience. It was," Harden said of his Wrigley love-in. "It was a pretty cool feeling. I've never had anything like that, pitching in Oakland. It's easier to pitch here with the crowd into every pitch. It's exciting, and I'll use it as motivation to give me a push. From what I hear, it's like that every game. It's pretty impressive."
Edit: I'm glad he enjoys it here, I think that will definetly help us resign him.

Hey, I don't know if anyone else has an iPhone in here. If you do download AOL radio. There's a link to CBS radio stations.
Local Chicago radio stations you can stream on this: 104.3 FM (Jack FM), 670 AM (670 the Score), 93.1 FM (93XRT), 9?.? (B96, I forget the station), 780 AM (WBBM Newsradio 780). If only they had 720 AM and I could stream Cubs games.
Now my only question is, if I'm streaming 780 AM on my iPhone this fall. Will I be able to listen to the Bears game? Or would they block it out on the stream?

st louis now crushing... Brewers losing by one
They crushed themselves
The Cardinals appeared to be cruising with a season-high 22 hits while taking leads of 9-3 in the seventh and 10-4 in the eighth, but Jason Bay (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7143) hit his second two-run homer of the game in the eighth.
The Pirates tied it with four runs in the ninth on Nate McLouth (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7513)'s three-run shot off Jason Isringhausen (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5449) and Bay's fifth RBI of the game, on a force-play grounder.
Troy Glaus (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6063) homered leading off the 10th for St. Louis' 10th extra-base hit, but the Cardinals' unreliable bullpen couldn't hold this lead, either. Cardinals relievers have lost 20 games and lead the majors with 22 blown saves.
The Cardinals outhit the Pirates 22-13 but left 12 on base.
The Brewers fell to the Reds 8-2, so all in all a good day in the Central.

Marquis had a 4.91 ERA in June. Lilly has a 4.68 ERA on the season. Only because he did have a great June. He posted a 3.02 ERA that month. Though in his two July starts he has a 6.23 ERA.
History says both will suck in the 2nd half. Especially Marquis.
I don't really get what you have against Lilly. He has pitched well for us. Sure, he's no ace, and he gives up some runs and his fair share of homers, but he almost always keeps the team in the game, and has pitched well other than the short outing last week against Cincinnati.
And Marquis has been throwing excellently other than the start against Baltimore. I would just relax until one of them starts really having issues. Right now they are GREAT 4 and 5 options.

Aigh.
In Marquis' last 8 starts, 6 of them were quality outings (3 runs or less).
In Lilly's last 8 starts? The same. 6 of them quality.
That's what you ask out of your 4th and 5th starters.
You can't just look at ERA numbers. When you only pitch 2 1/3, your ERA will look horrible for giving up 4 runs. But if he had stayed in and pitched 6, it wouldnt have been too bad.

Yep, good first half is right.
I was looking at Edmonds numbers with the Cubs and through today he's played 44 games for us and has 9 HRs and 29 RBI as a Cub.
If you divide 162/44 you get 3.68
If we multiply Edmonds numbers out by 3.68 to see what he'd have if he played like has for us so far for a full season that works out to about 33 HRs and 106 RBI.
Pretty fucking good. I'll take it.
And he's playing good defense.
This is starting to look like a genius move by Hendry.
And I admit I was wrong about it.

Great first half Cubbies!!!
Not trying to get ahead of myself, but I LOVE that we've demolished the NL West this year so far, since *if* we win the Central, we'll more than likely play the West Division winners since the Wild Card will most likely come out of the Central :thumbsup

I'll look into this more, but just quickly using these two links.
1. All-Star Game History on Baseball Almanac (http://baseball-almanac.com/asgmenu.shtml) - Has dates of All-Star games.
2. Regular Season Standings (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/index.jsp) - Has final standings through 2001, and standings of any day during the season through 2005.
So I'm going to show the team(s) with the best record at the All-Star Break, then team with the best record in final standings. In addition who played in and won the World Series. This is just the start, I'll make an updated post once I can find better sources. Any suggestions where else I can look to find this info?
I intend to at least date this back to 1995, to see if any team with the best record, at the break, has missed the playoffs since the Wild Card came into effect. I think we all know about the 69' Cubs who I believe had the best record at the break. Though the thing about that is there were only two divisions. We were in the NL East, and there was no Wild Card. It's a lot easier to make the playoffs now.
So this is just basically a template till I find out more.

By the way, what would being black have to do with me liking Malcolm X? White people can't like him?
No, because Malcom X hates you. The guys is one of the biggest racist this world has ever seen. Had Malcom X been white, and said a lot of things he said about blacks instead. Well besides him being a Klan leader, he'd be hated by whites and blacks. Here's some nice quotes for you from Malcom X:
If I have a cup of coffee that is too strong for me because it is too black, I weaken it by pouring cream into it. I integrate it with cream. If I keep pouring enough cream in the coffee, pretty soon the entire flavor of the coffee is changed; the very nature of the coffee is changed. If enough cream is poured in, eventually you don't even know that I had coffee in this cup. This is what happened with the March on Washington. The whites didn't integrate it; they infiltrated it. Whites joined it; they engulfed it; they became so much a part of it, it lost its original flavor. It ceased to be a black march; it ceased to be militant; it ceased to be angry; it ceased to be impatient. In fact, it ceased to be a march
I've never seen a sincere white man, not when it comes to helping black people. Usually things like this are done by white people to benefit themselves. The white man's primary interest is not to elevate the thinking of black people, or to waken black people, or white people either. The white man is interested in the black man only to the extent that the black man is of use to him. The white man's interest is to make money, to exploit.
The common enemy is the white man.
"Every time you see a white man, think about the devil you're seeing," Malcolm X said when he was the leading spokesperson for the Nation of Islam, a black Nationalist religious group.
If I'm not mistaken he was against whites and blacks doing anything together. He opposed interracial marriage. He hated America, and said all black people were Africans. I know he later claimed not to be a racist, but I don't see a damn thing he did that made him likeable.
Yes, but I'd like it better

Three hole is usually best suited for your best power hitter who has a combo of contact/speed/base running. You want your best power hitter in the hole 4 hole. You'd like some sort of slugger in the 5 hole. Fukudome isn't a slugger, and by all means is not suited for the 5 hole. We survived, just like we could if D-Lee was in there.
But D-Lee is not a slugger, he's not Cliff Floyd. He is a good contact guy though. Even last year when the wrist injury took away his power. He was still hitting for a high average and can hit to all fields. He's not as fast as he was in his Marlins days, but he can still steal bases. He's a smart base runner so he knows what to do when Ramirez and Edmonds are batting.

If it goes too much further, they should use college football-type overtime rules. Each team starts with a runner at second at the beginning of each inning.

Jesus Uggla, suicide squeeze or ANYTHING! Seriously that was a horrible at bat. I agree that Selig sucks for "making it count". I don't understand why the team with the best overall record doesn't get homefield. That's how it is everywhere else. You take care of business and you get rewarded.
The Cubs could wind up with the best record in baseball, win their division, and get to the World Series. Yet they might not have home field advantage over an AL Wild Card who barely gets in, and couldn't even win their own division.

Elijah Muhammed was a racist, Malcolm just ate up everything he said and preached it. When he realized how fuck Elijah Muhammed was, and after his Hajj; he changed for the better.

No. If we choose a song by Eddie Vedder as our song...I may stop being a fan.
How can you knock that song? It's frickin' awesome.

What would Malcom X think about your discrimination of a song? It's a song about the Cubs, how you can hate that is beyond me.

He's right Bo.
You're being ignorant and intolerant of this song, and Malcom would not be down with that.

Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time... up there. But down here it's our time. It's our time down here... that's all over the second we ride of Troy's bucket
