Have fun there tonight!

Are you going to the brewery restaurant in Old Town beforehand?

I love that place.

Didn't go to Upstream last night...new bar two blocks away from Qwest called The Old Mattress Factory is where hundreds of Dave fans posted up before the show. Third row seats, great times...even with the Stay closer.

Got to see the 9th. What the hell is happening?

Who said this? With the Cubs viewing him as a front of the line starter. Even if they wanted to break him in through the pen first. Have they given any indication they think he's ready? I'll take him over Hart though. Hopefully Samarzidja would be great, and kick Marquis out of the rotation when Wood comes back.

Found it:
Lefty Scott Eyre was activated from the DL on Wednesday, with Kevin Hart optioned to Class AAA Iowa to make room. If Wood goes on the DL, the Cubs could replace him by activating Jon Lieber (foot strain) when he's eligible Saturday, or possibly by going to Samardzija, their top power arm at Iowa.

''That's conceivable,'' assistant general manager Randy Bush said. ''He's put himself on the radar.''

The former Notre Dame football star is 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA in six starts since his promotion to Iowa.
Looks like Jeff is off to a good start in Triple-A. Also Pie has his batting average up to .263, and is hitting .371 in his last 10 games. He's also hitting .338 in the month of July. He only hit .282 in June.

Man, is this division race making me lose sleep...Milwaukee is suddenly loaded, and the Cardinals are scary, mainly because of how many key players will be coming off the DL for the home stretch. Both leagues' central divisions are going to be CLOSE finishes this year, especially with detroit finally playing as good as they look on paper. Our boys need to take it one series at a time, and routinely win at least 2 out of 3 like we were doing at the beginning of the season. with soriano back, and almost everyone healthy, this is when we need to put together a nice streak!

AlexK79
07-24-2008, 02:52 PM
We will get hot. Milwaukee is scary, but keep in mind we just got Soriano back, which is essentially like adding a superstar in a trade deadline deal right now, not to mention it strengthens our bench.

And even though we are only 2-4 since the break, our starting pitching has been good in just about all those games, the O was just sleeping a little.

If he stays healthy Harden is going to be huge for us. He's been absolutely lights out in 2 starts but is 0-1 because of a blown lead one day and an anemic offense the other. That will even out.

Even though the lead is down to one, I'm not worried. We have the best lineup, a great starting rotation, the best bench, and a very good pen. Not to mention who do you want managing down the stretch in a pennant race? Sweet Lou or Ned Yost? lol

I actually think that the Cubs would play better trailing the Brewers, they need something to strive for, apparently being in first for almost 2 straight months isnt good enough to keep the bats swinging.

darbini
07-24-2008, 05:12 PM
Lou will keep them striving, and he'll make sure they know what good enough is. Everyone knows what they have to do, it's just a matter of constantly improving as a team and stepping up when needed. We've earned our spot, and chasing the Brewers isn't where we need to be, we have demons to cast and bigger fish to catch.

Mark Cuban has made it down to the final 3 bids for possible owners for the Cubs.
I for one, hope he gets it.

If you read the article, of the 3, the only one I really hope doesn't get it is that Rickells family who found TD Ameritrade, because I really, really don't want Wrigley to be renamed TD Ameritrade Field. :(

The one with Hank Aaron and Jack Kemp involved would be ok with me too because I trust them to keep the tradition and the integrity of Wrigley in tact.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban reportedly is still among the potential list of potential buyers for the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that the Cubs have narrowed the original list of 10 prospective buyers to five and Cuban is still in the running. All five have submitted bids of $1 billion or more to the Tribune Company, which owns the franchise.

The most important thing about all of this though:
John Canning, the chairman of private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners LLC, which had been treated as the front-runner, did not make the initial cut, according to the person, who said Tribune is not letting any bidder eliminated after the first round submit a new higher proposal in the second round.

Canning is a minority owner of the Milwaukee Brewers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=mil) and close friends with Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig. Any successful sale must be approved by three-quarters of the owners of other major league teams.

Canning did not return calls seeking comment.
If this is true, and he can't submit a higher proposal in the second round. Mark Cuban ACTUALLY has a chance. Because it was assumed Selig would pick his buddy. Hell when the Red Sox were for sale, Selig took a lower offer from Theo's group. Because he felt like it, thought they'd be the better owners.

Cubs being owned by the Tribune Company, and openly traded on the stock market are in a different situation. The Tribune in theory should be selling to the highest bidder. But again any owner would have to be approved MLB. Seriously with Canning out, I like Cuban's chances a lot more then I have in the past.

Cubs being owned by the Tribune Company, and openly traded on the stock market are in a different situation. The Tribune in theory should be selling to the highest bidder. But again any owner would have to be approved MLB. Seriously with Canning out, I like Cuban's chances a lot more then I have in the past.

Exactly! Before, it was like Canning and then everyone else. Now it's WIDE open, and Cuban has as good a shot as anyone.

I just hate all the politics involved with having to get him approved by all the other owners. You know Reinsdorf is going to be doing everything he can to blackball Cuban because 1. He hates Cuban and 2. He doesn't want to see his White Sox become even more irrelevant in Chicago than they already are.

Did you know Reinsdorf was the ONLY NBA owner NOT to approve Cuban as the Mavericks owner. Not that it mattered, but Reinsdorf is buddies with Selig. I just like Cuban becuase he honest to god GETS the Cubs fans. He said if he was owner, he's not going to have some suite or anything. Just a couple reserved seats in the bleachers for him and his friends.

Cubs place Wood on DL
The Cubs placed closer Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list before their game Thursday night, the 12th time in Wood’s career he has been on the DL.

A corresponding roster move is not expected until Friday, but the Cubs are likely to call up touted right-hander Jeff Samardzija, the former Notre Dame football star, from Class AAA Iowa.

The Wood move was backdated the maximum 10 days, making him eligible to return Tuesday, and the Cubs are hopeful he’ll be available that night in Milwaukee. Wood hasn’t pitched since July 11 because of a blister on his right index finger.
If we call up Samardzija, I'll be happy. Hopefully he pitches well enough that they give him a shot in the rotation. Bye bye Marquis... since we refuse to let Marshall start over him. Maybe a big name prospect like Samardzija will do the trick.

From what I read the blister is now gone, but the skin is still really tender right there. So if he were to pitch the blister would come back. He's said in the past he could pitch through this. But right now the Cubs are thinking about Wood in October, not July. Though with the division lead shrinking, this is a shitty time for this to happen. Stupid offense.

Wasn't his trip to the DL supposed to have been retroactive to like a week ago?
So he's only supposed to be on it until Sunday.
Which is like nothing.

Or has something changed?

A trip to the DL can only be retroactive 10 days. Regardless of when we put him on the DL, he still has to be on it for 5 then. I'm not sure when it changed to this.

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Steve Bartman has refused yet another offer to cash in on the moment he became the most famous -- or infamous -- Chicago Cubs fan in history.

Bartman friend Frank Murtha says that Bartman won't accept an offer of $25,000. For the money, all Bartman would have to do is attend the National Sports Collectors Convention in Rosemont and autograph a photograph of himself tipping a foul ball that seemed destined for Cubs outfielder Moises Alou's glove during a 2003 playoff game with the Florida Marlins.

Bartman was vilified by Cubs fans, who thought that he helped prevent the team from reaching the World Series. Alou has made conflicting statements on whether he would have caught the ball.

Bartman has declined all offers to make appearances or money off his brush with fame.
I couldn't turn down 25k for one autograph.

But if you can get a guy in his prime who's a good hitter. I say we do that. SP wise I'm sure the Cubs still want Bedard. I've made the case for Greinke in the past (we went after him last year), and we could always go after a Roy Halladay. I'm a fan of getting Greinke too, not so much Bedard though honestly.

Whaddya think we'd be offering/giving up for any of those guys?
If Greinke is available, which I'm 99% sure he'd have to be. He's an FA after next season, and KC knows it can't keep him. He was Milwaukee's plan B if Sabathia deal fell through.

I'm sure we'd have to give up a lot, but I don't mind raping the farm system. Normally I would, but we all know how good this team can be. I know some people on these boards still like Lilly and Marquis. I don't care if one of them had a good year last year. That's last year, and this year they are struggling. I'm all about 2008 right now. In a year like this you overpay to get certain guys.

But for Greinke we'd probably have to do a deal around Vitters. Which would suck, because he's going to be a Super Star. Halladay I'm not so sure. I know Toronto would probably rather keep him. But if they're honest with themselves. With Tampa Bay so young, and you have the Red Sox and Yankees. They really need to retool and get young.

Bron Yr Aur
07-24-2008, 11:57 PM
Are we talking about the same Halladay I thought he was a righty.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. Only makes my point even more. With Zambrano, Harden, and Dempster at the top of the rotation...I mean, Lilly is solid and almost always keeps the team in the game, and it's down to Marquis, who has held his own the last couple months. The starting rotation has been excellent since the all-star break. The bullpen is very worrisome as is the offense when we go on the road, because it seems to just disappear.

1-6, 6.95 ERA in 8 starts, and yes, i felt as if my post needed a smiley, and while i eagerly searched the panel, the cow stared into my eyes with a look no cow has ever given me before. I couldnt look away, and determined that this cow must be placed in my post.

Moo.

We need to organize the "You Can't Spell 'Cuban' without 'Cub'" campaign. Get every Cubs fan we know to meet outside Wrigley on off days. Bring posters and what not. Couldn't hurt, and yes I love my Cubs enough to do this. Because getting a bad owner could screw a lot of things up.

He looks like a cocky arse to me. Always got his helmet cocked to the side just a tilt and he just walks around with this douchish swagger. Maybe it's because he played at Miami...

If the Shark starts, I'll be ticked about going to Deer Creek. I really want to see how he does.
The former Notre Dame football star might even start for the Cubs this weekend, though that could not be immediately confirmed. A Saturday start would push back Rich Harden's scheduled start to his sixth day -- a schedule that produced good results for Harden with Oakland earlier this year.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said before Thursday's game that a final decision on whether to recall Samardzija from Class AAA Iowa was to be made Thursday night, with an announcement expected today.

One thing's for sure: Since his promotion to Iowa last month, the third-year pro has looked like Indiana Lightning at the Class AAA level, going 4-1 with a 3.13 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings to just 16 walks.

''He's made tremendous progress. He's been outstanding,'' Hendry said.

''He's exactly where you could have hoped he'd be in a year and a half.''
The right-hander signed a five-year, $10 million deal before last season after being drafted in the fifth round in 2006.

Despite the fact they have this plan about giving Harden 6 days between starts, and even skipping a start here and there? If they're going to do that, right now would be the perfect time. I really don't care where he pitches though, I just want to see him.

The Pirates are indicating to other teams that their asking prices on outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte are coming down, but some teams are still not lured by the change. The Pittsburgh asking price, says one rival executive, "has gone from absurd to crazy." Other teams are reading the adjustment downward on the Nady and Marte asking prices like a blink in a card game -- and think that the Pirates will continue to drop the prices until they find a suitable deal. The Mets, the Rays, the Athletics and the Yankees have kept in contact with the Pirates.
You know who can play center field? Xavier Nady. You know what team he's on? Pittsburgh Pirates. What's the only team that's ever shown a willingness to trade with us from the Central? Pittsburgh Pirates. Last time they did a big trade with us? 2003. Who did we get? Kenny Loft, Randall Simon, and Aramis Ramirez. Lets pull an 03' and get Nady, and some other guys who will help us get to the post season.

The Cubs became the first NL team to win 60 games this year, but reaching that milestone isn't necessarily a good omen. The last time the first NL team to 60 wins went on to win the World Series was 1995, when the Atlanta Braves beat the Cleveland Indians.

1st NL Team to 60 Wins, Since 2000

Year Team Result
2008 Cubs ?
2007 Mets/D-backs DNQ/L, NLCS
2006 Mets L, NLCS
2005 Cardinals L, NLCS
2004 Cardinals L, World Series
2003 Braves L, NLDS
2002 Braves L, NLDS
2001 Cubs/Dodgers Both DNQ
2000 Braves L, NLDS

Granted, but Harden's health is first priority. I'd rather him be able to face the Brewers or whoever in the NLCS. But he just had the All Star Break. Plus the day Harden goes, it's not like we need an ace pitcher.
