Cubs win! Nice catch it sounded like from Edmonds to end it!
Beautiful! :multi
Edmonds made up a LOT of ground, it was amazing he's still able to do that. Bon and Len even said they didn't think there was any way he was catching up to that ball.
Also, since you can't see it. Shark's first two K's in the 9th he made the batters look foolish. It's still too early to say, but all things point to him being a good one.

Can you be charged with a mental error.
That was ridiculous.
I was wondering how they were going to score that. Cuz it really wasn't an error.
HA... Either way, Samardzija's first save, grew up just down the street from the kid playing baseball in the park next to his house. Great to see him up in the Bigs!

That's why I like Lou!!
Ya this was Lou's exact quote:
"If you see a young man throwing the ball like that, I don't think he'll be the guy leaving, I'll tell you that," manager Lou Piniella (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/lou-piniella-PESPT008480.topic) said Saturday. "If he continues to throw the ball [well], it's almost like trading for a reliever."
Shark gave up a run in that outing, but Lou liked what he saw after only one game. Now after two scoreless innings, and the way he did things a mature pitcher would do. Like shaking off Soto on the Ramirez strike out pitch. I'm hoping he sticks around.
I swear though if we send down Marshall or Gaudin while Marquis sticks around, I'm going to be pissed. To quote Al Gore, "I'm super-cereal!"

Watching the post game. Lou said "I asked Jeff if he was ready before the game, and he said 'Just call on me.' and it was impressive." might be paraphrasing it, but so far he's brought him up twice saying how impressive he was.
Edit: "We've been looking for one more good arm in that bullpen and I think we've found it." he went on to call him cool as a cucumber and what not. Glowing review on him. He said was really impressed with him last time, and even more so today. Because it was 2 big innings, in a game they needed to win. So Lou is loving on him in the post game press conference.

After my last post, he kept going on and on about him. I think Piniella is in love. Marmol better watch out. If he doesn't get his act together he's pitching the 7th. If Wood can come back 100% this pen is fucking scary.
Wood to close, Marmol the 8th, and Shark in the 7th? Better hope Marquis is starting.

Here's how I want our pitching staff for the rest of the season and I see it currently being most effective:
Starting 5-
Zambrano
Harden
Dempster
Lilly
Marshall
Bullpen-
Gaudin
Shark
Cotts (Yes I said it. He's been decent lately and is a lefty.)
Eyre (for now)
Marmol
Wood
*Notice no Jason Marquis, Michael Wuertz (even though he's in the minors now, where he belongs) Kevin Hart (see Wuertz) and no fucking BOB HOWRY!!! :mad (calm down Ryan, calm down, deep breaths)
Anyway, I think that would be a pretty damn good pitching staff. :)
Edit: I would still be very much in support of the Cubs grabbing another quality reliever before the trade deadline or on waivers after it.

Ya the thing is, with that rotation. Lilly can have his occasional Marquis like games. It's just too much to try to carry both of them. Because Lilly can be dominant, and other times suck. Marquis can be ok, and most of the time suck. Then you get those losing streaks started when both of them suck at the same time.
That way with Zambrano, Dempster, Harden, and Marshall. You like your chances every 4 days. Then with Lilly it's like "Ok lets see what we get."

Ha! I can't say it unless we beat Sabathia and Sheets in the first 2. Even then I couldn't be comfortable with it totally.
We both have some good pitching going in this series.
It will be a very good one.
If we can hit and our pitchers pitch like they can pitch then we have a good shot to take the series.
But if we don't hit I think I best bet will be a split.
But I don't want to talk about that.
Positive thinking. Lets get the Brewqueers!

They were talking on the Score about him. Saying he could be the next Jenks or K-Rod. Jenks came up in 2005 mid-season as a setup guy. Same deal with K-Rod in 2002 for the Angels. Both were super star setup men for their teams that went deep into the playoffs.
Now with Marmol all erratic, could the Shark be our new super star setup guy? Hell could he be the new Marmol?

Why? If he helps us win the world series I'm all for it.
We are all about one thing this year, right? Winning the WS.
Manny is a prolific playoff hitter, even as his numbers have declined in the regular season in recent years, he has still raked in the postseason.
If we grab Manny for the rest of the season and have to give up Fuk I'm fine with it.
I believe Fuk will only be a good every day player at best. Not a great one.
I'll give him up to improve our chances at winning this year, and won't lose a wink of sleep over it.

No, I knew Lee still wasn't completely healthy and comfortable, but I just don't believe Fuk will ever develop into someone with superstar qualities. Only an above average outfielder, who'll hit .280-.300 with about 12-18 homers at best.
Thats not worth holding onto if you're offered a guy who is a surefire HOFer with a proven track record of post season hitting, you've gotta seriously consider it.
And Fukudome is somebody I consider replaceable for next season.

With all you saw earlier this year, you think he'll only do that? Once Fuk gets back on track, he's going to be great. Not to mention he's improved the team. Best defensive right fielder in the NL. He's got a cannon arm, and his patience was infectious. Others on the team have said so. He still has a .382 OBP, which is INSANE for a guy hitting .277.
Edit: And OBP >>> AVG

Are you serious? Ron Santo has great career numbers, but I wouldn't want him suiting up for the Cubs right now. Manny is 36, his career numbers reflect what's done over his career. I doubt you'll get an argument from ANY Cubs fan. That if we could trade Soriano for a 27-28 year old Manny that it be a great move. But we'd be getting the 36 year old version.

He helps make Soriano less of a liability out there in left cuz he can cover so much ground.

Problem is, I don't think he can hit .270 in the majors. I'm pretty convinced at this point that he's a AAAA player. Every time we send him down to Iowa he tears it up, only to return to the majors and look completely over matched by big league pitching. Corey Patterson v2.0.
Big win last night, always nice to get a W when the other team has their ace going. And speaking of aces, Big Z vs. Sheets tonight, can't wait!

I disagree, Pie has always required about a year of STARTING to get his bat to come around. Not to mention they adjusted hid swing at the major league level.
He only got a chance to use the new swing pinch hitting/late inning AB's. When they sent him down he was hitting .285 in his last 15 games. I think getting demoted destoryed his confidence, and caused him to press. The new swing is working now. Hopefully it translates to MLB success.

Wow if Pie can hit like .270 or above in the majors I'm all about him coming back up. Good news!
He helps make Soriano less of a liability out there in left cuz he can cover so much ground.
Its truly fun to watch him play centerfield.
How are Pie's Homers and RBI numbers?
He can't hit at all in the majors. He can stay in Iowa as far as I'm concerned.

Can't hit in the majors? This type of thought process is why the Bears will never be able to develop a quarterback. Chicago fans must learn patience. Pie isn't A-Rod or Pujols. He's not going to be up for the MVP award his rookie year. But lets look at other currents Cubs hitters.
Derrek Lee
1st year in majors - .259 AVG
2nd year in majors - .233 AVG
3rd year in majors - .206 AVG
Aramis Ramirez
1st year in majors - .235 AVG
2nd year in majors - .179 AVG
3rd year in majors - .256 AVG
You can go through out the majors and find more cases like this. Felix Pie has NOT had a chance to start for a long period of time. To hit major league pitching he needs to see it. Not coming in as a defensive replacement and getting a late inning at bat. He's a 5 tool player, who already has 4 tools MLB ready. He just needs to get his bat working.
His .222 AVG this season blows, but he'll get better. He has a good work ethic, and in the long run you'll eat your words.
Felix Pie needs to be treted how Baltimore is treating Adam Jones in Baltimore. Let him hit and leave him in there regardless
Exactly! It's not like we have a center fielder bringing us super production. Edmonds gets hot every so often, but is usually not doing much. Defensively Pie far and away is the best option. He makes Soriano better, by giving him less ground to cover. Not to mention Soriano, Pie, and Fukduome combine to make an outfield you CAN NOT run on.

Edmonds isn't doing much because he's been hurt. He's been one of our biggest hitters since we got him, whenever he's been healthy. This is a team that needs to win a World Series. Edmonds knows what he's doing, and has the experience to handle the pressure both defensively and with the bat. Pie has shown nothing but an ability to shit the bed when the game matters (barring his one 9th inning home run in his career). Edmonds, on the other hand, makes amazing plays in the field with the game on the line.
We don't have time to develop Pie in the Majors when we can win now. Similar to the Bears not having time to let Rex truly develop, because they could win right then.

I honestly really like Fuk in center with DeRosa in right with Fontenot playing second. Mainly because Fontenot has swung such a hot bat.
But I agree about Pie. If we get rid of him without ever letting him play 3 months straight then we screwed up. We have to give him a chance besides just spot play. It's so hard to develop confidence when you're thinking, "Crap, I struck out my first two at bats. I have to get a hit here or Lou won't let me play tomorrow." He has to have that confidence of knowing he'll play.

I definitely agree with you on this.
However, I think that right now may not be the best time for Pie to be up with the major league club. Given what we are trying to do, and our chances at actually doing it.
Now is not the time for Pie to be able feel his way out in the bigs for a few months.
Bring him up for the very start of next season, just like we did this year, except let him stay up longer if he struggles and let him gain some confidence when he can't hurt us so much when it counts.

Yeah we can't afford to mess with this season. We have too much of a good thing going. Unless there's a rash of injuries, he needs to stay in Iowa until next year. Then we bring him up and let him loose until he stinks so bad we can't take it. Because if he's as good as I think he is, he might be an All-Star by the break next year.

That wasn't my point. I was just saying history shows that even a great hitter takes time to develop. The guy said Pie will never be able to hit MLB pitching. For this year, they made the right choice to send him down.
When rosters expand though, I think he also deserves to be called up. The minor league season is over at that point. We can rest the starters, and let Pie get a few more at bats. Maybe he'll pull a Kevin Hart and get really hot. If Pie is hitting, I doubt anyone will complain if he's starting over Reed/Hollywood.
I don't care who starts/plays as long as we win. In terms of future success though, I can't believe some people have given up completely on Pie. We don't know enough about him yet. 2008 isn't his time, but 2009 or 2010 he might be the reason we win games. He's only 23 years old.
I definitely agree with you on this.

Ya that's what I was saying this year. Let him struggle if he's going to struggle. He needed to be ready in Sept/Oct not April. Most hitters don't worry about going 0 for 4 and getting benched. Pie had to worry about that.
No one can say we aren't a better team defensively with Pie. We also have a pretty good record in games he starts. Again I'm not saying he should be our starting center fielder in 2008. But if he starts hitting, there's no reason not to call him up in Sept. and see where he's at.

Where is he going to play? We kind of have a lot of money tied up in Left Field and Right Field. No he can't play center field.
Don't think about the future!? So you'd be the guy trading away a Pujols and A-Rod for a really old starting position player? You have to think about the future. The reason Brian Roberts isn't on the Cubs is because of guys like Marshall and Cedeno. Guess what? They've both been up with the club this year helping.
Had we traded Pie and Hill for Soriano to the Rangers a few years ago. Guess what? We don't go to the playoffs in 2007. They both helped get us there. People wanted Carlos Marmol and offered good things in the past, again without him no 2007.
We should have traded the Shark for Kyle Farnsworth a few weeks ago. Screw the future.

Post season just like regular season is a 25 man roster. During September the rosters expand to 40. That's when you call up guys who you think can help the last couple weeks. Plus you can rest some of your big names after a long season if you have breathing room in the division.

If we can get a big enough lead. We should only play mostly backups for the first two weeks of September. Third week give starters a little more playing time. Then back to normal the last week. I hate when guys rest the last week, because then their bats gets cold.

Yeah I did...but only because I've had him stashed on my fantasy team ... he didn't look bad either ... not that I am a Cardinals fan, but he could sure help me make my run into the playoffs if he can still throw like he used to.

Three games + three wins = :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup
Now question for all of you out there. At Deer Creek last weekend I saw several "Matthews" Cubs Jerseys, in addition to a Cardinals and White Sox jersey that had 41 on back. I did some searching, but couldn't find them anywhere. Anyone know where they get these? Is it just a matter of customizing a jersey from your team's store? Thanks, and here's to a sweep .... :hump
I have one pics on ants n2 wpb after party page. Girlfriend made it and i rock it everywhere.

can yall imagine how lucky we are on another note to be missing our #3 pitcher who was untouchable this winter not even for Carl Crwfored or Bedard and be the best team in the NL......
Think about that... Big Z and Dempster have been aces... Dempster has had only one bad game against the sox and Z has had about two games equal to one bad Dempster game.... That means we have had amazing starts the whole year. We really might be seeing these two fighting for the cy young twoards the end of the year with them both having amazing win totals and eras under three..... THey have been fucking amazing.
Ted lilly has been either on or off and when he has been on he has been on. Its a jekyll and hide act for sure but i will take that out of my number 4 starter. Rich Harden cant say enough and i like how we are keeping him strong for October. Him and Big Z followed by Dempster have fuckig fun!!!!
Lets just ensure that we play well down the stretch rest our stars enough and storm into october healthy.....
PS shoot Howry and release or trade Eyre. I talked to Michael about this and there is no plac for eyre on the roster when lou will never pitch him no matter if its a blowout or not

Really? I think because he has only had one season with this type of success we can probably get him locked up for 12 or less per year.
Like 3/30 or 3/36.
Or 4/40 or 4/42, something like that.

So far in the series, Cubs starters are 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 21 innings. And for all the offensive production from the hitters -- 20 runs on 40 hits and 15 walks the past three nights -- the Cubs pitchers have allowed just six runs in the series.
And despite a mediocre 7-6 record since the All-Star break, the Cubs' pitching staff has a National League-leading 3.18 ERA in that span.

interesting theory on dempster i think he will take a below market contract to remain with us i mean we signed him during tommy john surgery and gave him closer money when he wasnt a closer i think he will give us a good price.. Same for Kerry also after this year.. I am so excited for our potential pitching staff next year..

Actually I see 11 and 12 being:
Jose Ascanio - Just turned 23 this season, Steve Stone raved about him when we got him. Said he's an All-Star talent, and could be our closer one day. With Marmol and Wood around I doubt that happens. But once he learns to control his awesome stuff he'll be in the mix.
Angel Guzman - When he's healthy, he's awesome.

well i am of the belief that Ceda might be better than just about anyone but I really want to see if Guzmn an rebound but lets see him do something first. And ascanio is straight by me he looked good in MLB but there is something about him that i dont trust.

I 150% disagree. With Wood healthy, we're fine. With Wood being hurt, and as Piniella put it today "he's not close." we NEED another pen arm. Until Marquis is kicked out of the rotation, we need another starter. Bring back Maddux.
we are also in on brian giles gross
Ya, not sure why we're looking for another outfield bat.
comcast sports net says we are in on luis gonalez for a bat off the bench...
Because we need another old corner outfielder who can't hit for average? Honestly if they want someone over Reed or Edmonds. Call up Pie, or go out and trade for a REAL bat. Because what can Gonzo do that Reed isn't doing?

agree with all of his except for the fact tha maddux said he wouldnt leave the west coast and quite frankly i like marquis marshall and guadin more than maddux there is a reason he went like 15 starts without a win

I agree, in some circles we call it the Padres offense. Maddux had a 3.90 ERA before the break. I think he'll bounce back, not that he's getting a lot of help. Padres have the 3rd worst record in the MLB, 2nd worst in the NL. They also have the 2nd worst offense in the MLB. Not a lot of wins, and runs to go to any pitcher.

That doesn't add up for two reasons. We only play 28 games in August. Of the three road series:
(3) @ Braves
(3) @ Marlins
(3) @ Pirates
They're all only 3 games each, meaning that's 9 games. So there isn't a 10 game difference of 19 to 29. Regardless, it's fantastic that two of them are the struggling Braves, and our bitch a.k.a the Pirates. Going to be nice to have all these home games where we dominate. Lets get a nice division lead.
