Man Alpine is creeping up on us. Going to be a good week. August 7th is a Bears pre-season game. It will be good having football back. August 8th I get to enjoy Cubs/Cards. August 9th and 10th ALPINE! I will be mad about Alpine and Cubs/Cards interfering with each other, but worse things have happened.

So are we all comfortable with the Cubs if they don;t make another move today?? Personally I think harden was arguably the biggest acquisition to date (maybe 1a and 1b with Sabathia)...but if they don't make a move I can live with it. We got Harden for a bag of balls basically. If we can get a left handed stick or another bullpen arm, well great...but if that doesn't materialize I think we have the horses to get it done...it's up to them and avoiding the injury bug from here on out!!

I honestly don't see any major room for improvement. Neal Cotts is throwing well so that cures any lefty pen issues.
With Cotts, Howry (I hate him) Gaudin, The Shark, Marmol, Wood we have a solid pen. Our starting rotation is as good as any and there's no place to improve on the field.
I like what we've got. If we don't win, it's not going to be because we were missing something. It's because the pieces we have just didn't perform.

There's only two moves I'd like to see, and it would make the Cubs A LOT better. Activating Wood from the DL, and removing Marquis from the starting rotation.
And get that damn blister healed on Kerry Wood.
They talked about it during the game. It's not a blister, it's an open wound. The skin won't regrow there for whatever reason. He's trying to toughen up what little skin he does have there.

2.04 on the season, too bad he gave up that run. Would have had a 1 something on the season. What was his Cub ERA before giving up that run?

I'd take that though, our curse is being able to get to the Wiorld Series. Not that we can't win it. So if we get there, the curse is over. Not that I'm saying it's a real curse or not. Just saying if we get there, we never have to hear about it again.

I think I was right, they held him back his last start so he could go deep this game. 7 innings and a 100+ pitches is nice. Now they'll baby him for a little bit, and then next big game let him go deep. Keep the arm fresh so they can abuse it in October.

Yeah probably so, especially now that we've opened up a bigger lead in the division.

I can't see him going past 5 the next couple starts. They'll do what they've been doing. Harden goes 5, Marshall goes 3, and some guy who needs work pitches the 9th.

They'd take him out without a doubt. Perfect games in August won't get you a ring. Even Harden knows he's had issues, and said he's glad the Cubs will give him a 6th day rest now and then. He will have a strict limit next game after going 100+ pitches. Perfect game or not, he won't go past that limit. If you think otherwise you're crazy.

Wood doesn't sound too happy with the situation, not that I blame him. Good to see he's keeping his arm in shape by throwing simulated games. I just really want him to come back, Wood is the Cubs.
MILWAUKEE -- Closer Kerry Wood threw a simulated game Thursday, and when he's eventually activated, he could be the only addition the Cubs make heading into the final two months of play.
Wood, who has not thrown since July 11 because of a nagging blister on his right index finger, threw about 26 pitches with bullpen catchers Corey Miller and Edgar Tovar as the hitters. Thursday was Miller's birthday.
"I'm beyond antsy," Wood said. "It's the [darndest] thing I've ever seen. I can't explain it, and nobody here can explain it. We've tried just about everything we could think of, and tried some things we probably shouldn't have. I think time is going to be the best thing for it."
"Hopefully here in a few days -- I feel like I've been saying 'in a few days' for about three weeks," Wood said. "I'm tired of talking about it, tired of dealing with it, tired of looking at it, tired of touching it, tired of coming in here every day trying to get it better. I did my throwing today, and I'm going to try not to think about it."
Is he close?
"I don't know," Wood said. "It was wrapped up today, so I didn't feel anything today. We'll probably try to throw without it [Friday] and see how it feels."
Don't bother sending suggestions on how to heal his hand. Wood has had enough, from Vitamin E to salves to things that are better left unsaid. His hand has been tested to see if there is nerve damage, or if there's a problem with blood flow. Nothing.
"You go to one doctor, and he says keep it wet, you go to the next doctor and he says dry it out," Wood said. "Flip a coin."
The problem is that Wood can't get a grip on the ball because of the blister.
"It's the pressure on the ball that causes the pain," he said. "It's not burning, it's not a blister anymore. It's an open wound, it's an open sore on my finger. The skin is missing. We're trying to toughen up the skin that has come back and get it as hard as we can. It seems to have hardened up quite a bit. I think we're making more progress than we have in the past couple weeks."
The good news for the Cubs is that they haven't had many save opportunities while Wood has been sidelined. Wood notched his 24th save on July 11, and since then, the Cubs have had a mini-vacation because of the All-Star break, and Carlos Marmol has two saves and Samardzija one two-inning save.

Yeah but if he's got a no-no going I think they'll give him a little longer leash.
But if he would need 125 or more pitches to complete the game, then I think there's no way they'd let him, no matter what.
DMBZeppelin

Hendry has said with Harden "We're thinking about October, and going backwards." he's on a strict pitch limit, and will remain on it. Most pitchers they'd let them go beyond a pitch limit. But from what Hendry has said, Lou has said, and Harden himself. They're all on the same page with this. Why would you risk breaking the glass pitcher over a game against Houston?
I get how special and rare a no hitter/perfect game is. You know what else is special and rare? Harden staying healthy. Every start from here on out is a career high in consecutive starts. Because before this season he had never started more then 13 straight. He might hit a career high in innings pitched this year. You don't want him being tired in October either.
If he goes deep in a game, it has to be worth it. Beating the Brewers is one of those times it's worth keeping him out there.

It's not really a blister anymore, and yes if need be Kerry will have to pitch with it. Thing is, they'd like him to 100% in October. That's why this year we're being cautious with most guys. In the past we'd need them out there to win. We can get by without Kerry for a little while. Even if it takes another month we'll be fine. But in Octboer I want him out there in the 9th. I agree with being cautious with him. We don't want to make it worse or get it infected or something. I just think it's funny that an open sore on his finger has sidelined him for 3+ weeks.
And it doesn't matter when we're blowing people out, anyway. And Marmol has looked a little more confident recently.

Gotta love how these Brewers back pedal
The Cubs trailed just once in the series, and that was for one inning on Monday.
The Brewers have downplayed the much-hyped July series after initially calling it a dress rehearsal and a test for September and the playoffs.
"This is not a death sentence by any means," Yost said. "If this was September, it would be different. We have plenty of time to recover from this and get back on track."

Cubs are 65-44 (.596%), 21 games over .500 with a +130 run differential. The closest to us in run differential is the +82 Red Sox. The Angels are only +56. Honest to god Rich Harden changed this entire team. With Dempster, Zambrano, and Harden we'll be tough to beat in the playoffs. We already know this offense is for real. Granted, but it's the nature of the position. Your body gets so beat up behind the plate. It's hard to maintain a good swing, and it will probably be like this every year.
The good thing about Soto is he doesn't take his struggles behind the plate. He probably won't get credit for it being he's a rookie, but he's easily one of the best defensive catchers out there. He should, but probably won't get consideration for a Gold Glove.

:thumbsup, its natural for catchers to wear down as the summer heats up.
And I totally understand.
And you're right about his defense. I've been very suprised and impressed by him behind the plate.
And hey he had 2 RBI today!
Giving him a .275 BA, 17 HR, and 60 RBI through 102 games played for Geo.
Very impressive for any MLB catcher, but especially a rookie.
We've got a guy who can be a special player for many years to come here. We are very lucky with Soto.

I'm not sure if batting average is involved, but I remember hearing the Cubs have never had a catcher with 30+ HR's and 100+ RBI in a season. If he heats up, he's got a chance to do that. Again I don't remember if they said a batting average or not, but I'm pretty sure they didn't.

Lilly (11-6) gave up one run and worked around six hits, surrendering three walks and striking out five. He didn't give up a home run for the first time since June 30. Relievers Chad Gaudin, Bob Howry and Carlos Marmol finished up.
Edit: Lilly only gave up one run in the taxing second, and that came on a bases-loaded grounder by opposing pitcher Paul Maholm (7-7) that bounced off Ryan Theriot's hand.
After that, Lilly faced no more than four batters in any one inning. Credit catcher Geovany Soto for helping to settle his starter down.
"He knew that I was scuffling with my curveball," Lilly said. "He helped me have a little more confidence and made me throw my changeup a little bit more and made me use my slider. Sometimes I get stubborn out there, and there will be times when something's not working and I want to force it to work. He was good with me today in that regard."

Maybe. He'd have to heat up a good bit though, as right now he's on pace for 26 HR and 90 RBI. Which is obviously very good for a rookie (or any) catcher, but I don't see him doing it.
Given what we said about how catchers generally slow down as the season goes on and weather gets hotter.
I'm gonna throw out a prediction of 25 HR and 87 RBI for Geo, and see what he ends up with. I hope I'm wrong and he does even better obviously though.

CHICAGO -- The best possibility for Kerry Wood's return from the disabled list is Friday, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said after watching Wood throw a simulated game Sunday morning.
Wood, who has not seen game action since July 11 due to a blister on his right index finger, tossed about 25 pitches. He did it without wearing the protective pad that he used in throwing sessions last week.
"[Wood] threw a lot of breaking balls, threw fastballs and a few cutters and didn't feel it," Piniella said. "He hadn't been out there in a while. Initially, he had problems getting the breaking ball over. Then it started getting a little more consistent when he finished up."
Bullpen catcher Corey Miller nearly took Wood deep on the first pitch of the simulated game, lining it off the left-field wall before the closer settled down.
Wood said he will meet with coaches to determine the next step before commenting. Piniella said Wood prefers to avoid a Minor League rehab assignment.
"He felt OK," Piniella said. "He looked a little rusty; that's to be expected. The important thing now is to see how he feels [on Monday]. After that, I'll put together a schedule to get him back pitching. A lot depends on [Monday]."
And if Wood feels fine on Monday?
"Then we can step it up and get him ready to pitch," Piniella said. "Once we get through the first obstacle [the finger], then we can worry about getting his arm in shape. That's why I mean stepping it up."

:lol Looks what's going on at the other side of town.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Miguel Olivo charged the mound after being hit by a pitch from D.J. Carrasco in the fifth inning Sunday, touching off a benches-clearing brawl between the White Sox and Kansas City Royals.
Two innings later, Royals starter Zack Greinke was ejected with one out in the seventh when he hit Nick Swisher with a pitch after both dugouts had been warned. Royals manager Trey Hillman was also ejected.
Carrasco was just brought in from the bullpen to replace starter Clayton Richard. Carrasco threw a pitch high and tight to Olivo, who ducked out of the way, and the ball struck his bat for a foul. On the ensuing pitch, Carrasco hit Olivo and the Royals' catcher charged the mound.
Olivo pulled up as if he was ready to punch Carrasco, a former Royals pitcher, when White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski grabbed him from behind. Olivo instead hit Pierzynski in the head, and by then both dugouts and bullpens had rushed the field.
Order was restored and Olivo, Carrasco and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen were ejected.
I also love Pierzynski getting punched in the head... again.

For the record I like Gaudin.
I still can't believe we got him. Harden and Gaudin for the lint in our pocket basically. Anyone missing those guys? Though I'll never forget someone calling into the Score and bitching we gave up catcher Josh Donaldson. Saying how we're going to regret that, not that we have anyone who looks to be our catcher for the next decade.

Marmol has been getting back to normal, which is great to see. I saw a story on Cubs.com yesterday he hasn't given up a run since the All-Star break. He said pitching in the All-Star game helped his confidence.

5 games up on Milwaukee, and 5 1/2 up on St. Louis!!!

Edit 2: Milwaukee is only 12 games over .500, 10 game difference. That's pretty nice.

They said Wood might be back the Houston series. Which means he'll definetly be here for the St. Louis series. Seriously we have a chance to knock them out of the division race. They could still try and catch the Wild Card, but we could seriously knock them out.

Ya know espn really makes me sick with their coverage sometimes (unfortunately most of the time recently).
I was watching Baseball Tonight yesterday and they were talking about how they think the Cubs are one of the first place teams that won't be in first place by the end of the season, and are apparently in love with the Brewers.
I was like "Hello? Have you not seen us play? Seen our roster, our bats, our pitching? Did you not see us rape the Brewers last week?"
They pissed me off so much.
And then I was just like, "Well ya know ESPN? Fuck you. We are winning the World Series this year. Ya hear me? The Cubs! Not the Brewers, and not Red Sox or the Yankees either! And we are throwing the biggest damn party you've ever seen when we do and you assholes will have no choice but to cover it!"
BOOM! :violent

Oh, undoubtedly. However because we all know this, any post count lead he does obtain for any amount of time is tainted.
Is Marshall left handed?
You serious, Clark?
Yes he's lefty.

Sometimes I am lazy too look it up.
I though so.
I guess he is more of an innings guy though instead of a lefty specialist that Eyre and Cotts are "supposed" to be.

Thats definitely good.
But you woulda thought that in a close game, only in the 5th inning, if things were going good he woulda let him go out for another inning or two.
I know Z's been throwing a lot of pitches in recent starts, and I'm all for preventative measures and resting him, but the timing was just weird.
Oh well. Didn't end up hurting us that much, as we were still able to get the win, after some struggles. But wins like this build character, so thats good.
And you can bet we'll get Super Z in his next start cuz he will be well rested! :evil

Ryan why are you trying to jinx us by changing your avatar?
Jon jinxes us with Cubs avatars, not me. I bring good things.
I have found that when I change my avatars to certain players they come out and do really well.
For example, Harden becoming a Cub and dominating, Fonz cominig back from injury and now he's hot.
Geo's been down a little bit and started to heat up a bit the last few days. I want him to get even better.
I just want to spread my magic around a bit to those in need.

Going into today, Guadin had given up 2 earned runs. So today was his third. He gave up 1 run over 2 inning July 10th. 1 run over 2 innings July 26th, and the solo shot today.
He did let one inherited runner to score today, but he usually starts off innings. He rarely comes in mid inning like he did today. So I doubt he's allowed a lot of interhited runners to score.

The July 10th game was his debut and he gave up a HR to the first guy I believe. Although every Cub pitcher that day gave up a HR so he just wanted to feel like one of the guys.

Damn it that really sucked.
It was not really that bad of a pitch either.
Which pitch were you lookin' at? He hung that thing right over the plate. Looked like a slider that didn't break. He's lucky the offense bailed him out.
They should've left Z in for the 6th, no doubt, though. I mean, if he got close to 100 pitches in that inning, I wouldn't mind them pulling him, but it's pointless to shorten him up for future starts when the bullpen is as bad as it is and you could potentially lose the game at hand. However, this probably will mean that he will be at his best against the Cardinals next outing.
Oh well, Reed Johnson and Alfonso Soriano are badasses, so it didn't matter.
Seriously, how great as Soriano been since he's returned? He was hitting .333 in July with a .641 slugging percentage, and those numbers have gone up to start August. And we've only lost 3 of the 12 games played since his return.

Even though we are the best team in the NL, the bullpen is still very weak. Who knows if Wood will be the same Kerry Wood that saved 17 straight or something earlier this season when he returns. Bob Howry is in complete disarray. He gives up a run almost every game he pitches, and usually it comes via the HR. Gaudin has been good, but look what happened today. I have little faith in the lefty specialists, Cotts or Eyre. Marshall has been very solid eating up innings, and Samardzija looks to be the same, but it's really too soon to make that call on him. Carlos Marmol has been getting his confidence back and he has the nastiest slider in the league maybe, but he's just plain wild.
They really need Howry and Marmol to return to form and they should be okay.

We are about to be 5 up on the Brewers and 6 up on the Cards.
Thats a good place to be. :)
The way I look at it, is right now, if we stay how we are and win the division then thats all we need to worry about going into the playoffs, because we will have home field advantage all the way through until the World Series (because of Bud Selig's idiotic rule about the all-star game we can't even possibly get home field in the WS).
But as it stands now, if we win the division, we should also definitely have the best record in the NL, which means we play 3 outta 5 in the first round and 4 outta 7 at Wrigley in the second round.
Yeah!
