Even though we are the best team in the NL, the bullpen is still very weak. Who knows if Wood will be the same Kerry Wood that saved 17 straight or something earlier this season when he returns.

Bob Howry is in complete disarray. He gives up a run almost every game he pitches, and usually it comes via the HR. Gaudin has been good, but look what happened today. I have little faith in the lefty specialists, Cotts or Eyre. Marshall has been very solid eating up innings, and Samardzija looks to be the same, but it's really too soon to make that call on him. Carlos Marmol has been getting his confidence back and he has the nastiest slider in the league maybe, but he's just plain wild.

They really need Howry and Marmol to return to form and they should be okay.

Howry is a good pitcher once his fastball starts hitting 95-96, and for whatever reason that takes him till late in the year now.

Now I'm not saying it will happen this year, but for a guy we're not relying on. He might be bad ass for us in the post season. But this pen has Wood and Marmol. By all accounts Marmol is back to being Marmol. So unless you're lucky you better get your scoring in by the 7th. But wait... we now have guys like Gaudin and the Shark. If someone didn't go deep you still have Gaudin or Marshall.

Yes we have crap like Eyre and Cotts, but how often do they pitch? Still doesn't change the fact the back end of this pen is strong as hell. How many teams bring in their 5th and 6th relievers and feel good? This pen has more then enough arms to kick ass in October.

The Cubs will complete a stretch of 20 games in 20 days Wednesday in the final game of a three-game series against Houston. The team is 10-7 during the stretch that Piniella predicted would be one of the most difficult of the season.

Though August will be made up mostly of home games, Piniella said it's also a month that becomes mentally tough.

''But we're in first place, and it shouldn't be as difficult as for the other teams lower in the standings,'' Piniella said.

''We start getting more days off now. We're off on Thursday, then play three and get another breather [next Monday].''

The days off will mean adjustments to the rotation.

''We're set up through the St. Louis series,'' Piniella said. ''We'll see what we do next Tuesday [in a three-game series in Atlanta], but I think it will be Rich Harden.''
If Harden goes Tuesday, it will be the rotation as normal. So the only change I can think of is they'll use the extra day off to skip Marquis a turn in the rotation. Plus Harden will have an extra day of rest for that Atlanta game.

Piniella also wants to test rookie Jeff Samardzija in back-to-back outings.

''We need to see how he reacts, how he responds,'' Piniella said.

Samardzija pitched Sunday in relief of Carlos Zambrano, but Piniella said he won't use him today after he was used for more than two innings Sunday.
If he doesn't respond well, he could always replace Marquis. 2009 can't come soon enough.

I saw him last year dominate. I saw him dominate early this year, and now he's back to normal. It's not like he's on a hot streak right now, this is what we usually see out of him.

Do you expect me to take you seirously as a baseball fan? The guy gave up a game tying home run, sure. But he didn't give up the lead. He got out of the inning. Is it good he gave up that home run? No, but there's a reason no one has ever had a 0.00 ERA on the season.

In baseball you'll do good and you do bad. If you HONESTLY think we should be out raged over ONE bad pitch. You don't understand how this game works. Whoever wins the Cy Young will probably lose another game between now and the end of the season.

Rich Harden will probably suck it up one game before all is said and done. Zambrano will probably give up a game tying home run himself. These things will happen over the course of the season. The reason I'm not going to get super down on Gaudin is because besides that home run. He's been VERY VERY good. If it becomes a trend, then you worry. Not over one game.

Samardzija looks great as well, but he's only pitched....what, 6 or 7 times? You can't just say he's going to be lights out the rest of the year after so few appearances.
So Gaudin has one bad game, and we should make a big deal out of it. Shark has looked good in multiple games, and we should be cautious? While I don't think he'll be lights out. We're not asking him to close. We have Wood. We're not asking him to be our setup man. We have Marmol.

But it's VERY obvious the guy can pitch. He has an electric arm. He's been put into big situations in the few games he has pitched, and so far pulled through with it. This guy can handle the big stage, and I doubt with experiance that changes.

Wood threw 30 pitches to hitters from the Wrigley Field mound after warming up and getting some work done in the bullpen hours before Sunday's game against the Pirates. He said he also did some throwing Monday morning.

Sidelined since July 11, Wood couldn't get the blister to heal until recently.

"I tried just about everything. Then the last thing we tried seemed to work well. It turned around in about three or four days," Wood said Monday without explaining the procedure. "It toughened it up and worked well."

Manager Lou Piniella said Wood would be used in middle relief the first time he returns to the mound and then resume the closer's role when he's ready.

"He should have a nice fresh arm between now and the end of the year," Piniella said.
I hope this is for real, and not Wood just trying to pitch through this.

I work right downtown on N Wacker Dr.
Me and about 20 other people at the firm I work at just spent about 20 minutes in the stair wells.

We just got back, but apparently there was a touchdown in Lincoln Park, and over 40 mph winds.

I heard these crazy sirens, and there's all sorts of horizontal rain, thunder and lightning as well!

Thanks for the concern, it was a crazy night. By the time you posted this I had already lost power. I was actually listening to the Score for an update on the Rain Delay. David Shooster/Schuster (sp) said that in his 30 years of covering sports, he'd never seen anything like it. He went on in detail about how intense the rain was, and the winds ect. ect.

So I was like "Well it seems normal here." and went downstairs to check it out. The second I opened the door, the wind just got intense and about 20 seconds later the rain game. By far the craziest storm I've ever seen. It got an intense dark from the clouds, but the lightning was going off like a strobe light.

I wish I had thought to try and record the lightning, because when I mean a strobe light, I really mean it. It never ever ever stopped. It got dark for a split second, and the next bolt was going. You could see lots of lightning bolts, but at the same time all the clouds were lighting up from non bolt lightning.

But ya Griffith got hit hard, I drove around in between two of the storms that hit. There were lawns totally gone because a tree got uprooted. Floods everywhere. A couple stores and shit were just completely gone. Just some debris left. Other people were missing roofs and crap.

To make matters worse, the Cubs lost :(. I hope everyone in this thread who lives in the Chicago land area is ok. I know other places got hit hard as well. Oh and I'm going to the Cincy DMB show tonight. So I had to go with my girlfriend to her brother's house because he had power, so she could wash some clothes.

He had a friend over who was a White Sox fan, I spent the whole time arguing with him over Rich Harden. He swears up and down that he's a horrible pickup for the Cubs and never goes more then 5 innings. White Sox fans are crazy I tell you.
