"Bob is a responsible person and he works hard, and I've got confidence in him," Piniella said. "I'll keep bringing him in there. I'll continue to do so. The home run ball has hurt him. Maybe he's in a little bit of an unfortunate streak, when you make a bad pitch and somebody hits it. He goes out there and competes and gives you everything he's got. I expect him to have a pretty good finish for us."

Marquis frightens me...its a good thing our playoff rotation will be a 3 or 4 man, because Marquis just isnt very good.

Another thought, I'd really like to see us win 100 or more games, so if we win the world series, that will be one more argument in our favor when the "2005 sox vs 2008 cubs" arguments begin :)

Absolutely. Howry is a flat out bad pitcher. Theres no way around it. He was bad last year, and he is bad this year...why we dont just keep sending Gaudin and Jeff S. in there, I dont know. we have plenty of other capable relief guys. Howry will lose us a playoff game this year. Mark my words.

2 things we need to do with our pitching staff, well maybe 3.

1. Howry and Marquis go bubbye.
2. Sean Marshall becomes the 5th starter.
3. We grab a dependable veteran off waivers for the playoff push. (I don't know who's available, just sayin)

If we do those 3 things I would be supremely confident in the Cubs.

The time when I believe actually winning, but then ended up being down by somewhere between 6-8 runs by the end of the inning?
I didn't remember that it was against the Devil Rays, but that sounds right.

Yeah, everybody was just pissed at first, and then one thing after another after another after another went wrong and it just became comical.

Soriano has 20 hits, including six homers, and 14 RBIs in 11 games since returning from a broken finger.

Also look what Berkman said...

The bullpen is looking better every day, and it just seems like we can bust out 10 runs in a game at will. It's too bad we've been sprinkling in those 0-2 run games as well. What really gets overlooked about this team, though, is the strength of the order from top to bottom. I mean, I don't know of any other team that has such great hitters at the bottom of the order. In the bottom half of our lineup we have guys like Soto, Reed Johnson, DeRosa, Cedeno, Fontenot, etc. These guys are all hitting remarkably well and drawing plenty of walks. Which makes it almost a moot point about where Soriano bats, because these guys at the bottom get on base a lot in front of him anyway. And when we have Zambrano pitching, he's even a severe threat. It's really great to have a different hero every day, and know that the Ramirez and Lee and Soriano don't have to go 3/5 every day.

Although Soriano has been fucking on FIRE since his return. When he is hot like this, you almost expect to see him hit it out when he comes up to bat.

Ok so in the two days since the first two post. The bullpen has given up a lead, which we wound up coming back thanks to the offense and winning 11-7. Then today Marshall and Shark pitched, who you've said in the past that neither can be trusted.

I suppose I was a little hard on the bullpen posthumously. Other than Bob Howry, it has been getting better. I still don't think you can really trust young guys like Samardzija and Marshall in really tight spots, or especially in the playoffs when they will be going against the best hitters and veterans who have been there before. But I am still worried that this recent stretch over the past week or so of pretty good pitching by the pen might not stick. We just have a lot of young guys pitching who I'm just a little worried will fold under pressure down the stretch or in the playoffs.

But yeah, if they continue on this trend, I would be pretty confident in them. And if Howry would just come around and stop giving up homers, that'd be nice. I'm just worried he's kinda just lost it. He's not really gonna fool anyone with that fastball, and he's always really relied on spotting it on the corners, but it just seems like he has so much trouble getting any easy outs anymore. Last year was patchy, but he still had some excellent stretches. This year it's just been almost uniformly awful.

Listen I know Theriot wore down at the end of last year, but he's a decent short stop. I even said last year I thought Cedeno should be the shortstop and Theriot the second basemen. Whenever DeRosa leaves I hope that happens. I feel Theriot is a very good second basemen.

Regardless Theriot is hitting .314 with a .392 OBP. He's hitting .340 with a .403 OBP at Wrigley Field. Some good situational hitting -

Close and Late: .324 AVG with a .432 OBP
Runners On: .323 AVG with a .400 OBP

Also here's how he hits in certain spots of the lineup -
Batting #1: .368 AVG, .419 OBP, .831 OPS
Batting #2: .311 AVG, .394 OBP, .782 OPS
Batting #7: .375 AVG, .412 OBP, .787 OPS
Batting #8: .207 AVG, .281 OBP, .488 OPS

Honestly, how anyone could say Theriot sucks...it's beyond me. Gets on base occasionally?? He has the best on-base percentage and batting average on the entire team. What the hell are you talking about? Granted he's not going to win any gold gloves but he's very important to the offense.

I also like Cedeno and like the idea of Theriot playing 2nd after DeRo leaves, but honestly, I really like Mark. His average has been way down as of late, but he is a solid hitter who can draw walks and hit the long ball occasionally, as well. I'm not sure Ronny would be an improvement over either player. He's likely not going to hit for average or get on base as much as Theriot (and is more prone to the SO), and he probably doesn't have as much power as DeRosa.

I think that Theriot is a much better overall player than Cedeno. That dude needs to get dropped like a bad date.

Disagree. He has had some vast major league improvement in the past year and it would be STUPID to get rid of him.

I as well think Cedeno is valuable to the team.
Is he an everyday starter? No.
But useful? Yes.

The Cubs -- who waived the left-handed Eyre, then designated him for assignment Tuesday -- received Class A right-hander Brian Schlitter, a Maine South graduate, in return.

Schlitter, 22, has been assigned to Class A Daytona. The Park Ridge resident was 4-3 with six saves and a 2.22 ERA in 34 relief appearances (48 2/3 innings) for Class A Clearwater. He has 58 strikeouts and has allowed only one home run this season.

By them you mean D&T? If so, I fail there. I went to 3 of the 4 D&T shows in 06' and the free Obahma show this year. Only time I've seen the duo. I'm going to the Greek though. Though with Alpine shaping up to be epic, the Greek might just be average.

Edit: And since you're going to a lot of shows like me. Do you ever have to explain how you're not the only one doing this? That it's a common thing among DMB fans? I've had to explain that a lot recently. "Didn't you just DMB?"

CHICAGO -- Right fielder Kosuke Fukudome is in danger of losing his spot in the Cubs' everyday lineup.

"We need him to start hitting," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said before Sunday night's 6-2 win against the Cardinals. "If not, I'm going to have to start looking for other options."

Fukudome's batting average splits have decreased each month: .305 in April, .293 in May, .264 in June, .236 in July and .107 in 28 August at-bats. He has one home run since the Fourth of July and has started sitting against the occasional left-hander.

Fukudome went 0-for-4 with a pair of groundouts on Sunday. Piniella repeated his concerns after the game. Fukudome, who continues to receive widespread praise from Cubs fans, said he remains confident.

"Nothing much I can say," Fukudome said through interpreter Ryuji Araki. "If Lou decides to put me on the bench, then that's where I will be. I'm not going to start hitting just because he said something like that, either. So I'll just follow whatever Lou tells me to do."

Fukudome grounded into a double play in the first, fouled out to left in the fourth and grounded out to the pitcher in the sixth and seventh. Piniella defended the hitless night.

"Today he hit a few balls hard," he said. "The first double play today was a hit-and-run, and we didn't execute the play. That double play certainly wasn't his fault. He moved the runner over when we needed it [in the sixth]. He hit that ball hard last time up. ... He does such a good job in right field that we hate to take him out of the lineup because of that. But at the same time, we've got other people here that are looking for some playing time that are swinging the bat. I'm going to give him every opportunity, but we'd like to see him hit."

Fukudome said Piniella has not expressed his frustrations with him face-to-face.
"It doesn't bother me at all," Fukudome said. "Maybe that's the American way of doing things around here."

Piniella said the only change he's seen with Fukudome is that he's not taking as many pitches as he did earlier in the season. The outfielder has addressed his batting with Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry a couple of times, and he has not sought advice from previous coaches in Japan.

"[Perry] hasn't seen me play all year round," Fukudome said. "He hasn't seen me when I'm really hitting good. He hasn't seen me when I'm really hitting bad. Gerald has not seen everything that he needs to see to give the best advice."

"I just look at trying to put lineups that produce runs," Piniella said. "We've got a couple of guys here that are swinging the bats. ... Sooner or later, I've got to give them opportunities."

We play them at home for three games starting Sept. 16, and then we play them at Wrigley North the last 3 games of the season.

I hope those last 3 games, our record will be good enough where they don't matter, and we've clinched home field through the WS, and we can just play our scrubs and rest our studs while we are laughing at the Brewers trying to win the wildcard.

Go Cubs go!

Got Harden going vs. Atlanta today.

Thought to myself that it seemed like forever since he's pitched, and well thats cuz it's been 7 freaking days!
But thats good for Harden. I know they wanted to rest him, and with the Cubs having the 7th and the 11th off they were able to do just that.
Giving him 2 extra days rest.
Wunderbar!

Lets get them Bravos tonight.
They are now Teixera-less and with the extra rest Harden should be able to 7 if we need him to.

Tuesday's scheduled starter, Rich Harden, gets the call in the second game tonight -- the eighth day since he last pitched -- while today's original starter, Jason Marquis, pitches the opener.

The backed-up rotation leaves the Cubs needing another starter Sunday in Florida. That could be lefty Sean Marshall, if he's not needed in relief between now and then, with a heavy dose of bullpen at the ready for what likely would be a five-inning start in a best-case scenario.

Otherwise, the Cubs could look to Class AAA Iowa for somebody such as Kevin Hart or even Mitch Atkins, who began the season at Class AA Tennessee and has gone 15-6 this season, including 6-0 with a 3.96 ERA in six starts since his promotion to Iowa.
I wouldn't hold it against Marshall if he struggles. He's not stretched out after not starting for over a month. My god I'm not looking forward to seeing Marquis pitch tomorrow.

ATLANTA -- Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood's next relief appearance most likely will not be as the closer, but one more time in a setup role.

Wood has pitched twice since coming off the disabled list Aug. 5, and both times he was not used as the closer. Cubs manager Lou Piniella and pitching coach Larry Rothschild discussed their options Tuesday.

"We're going to give him one more 'tightener,'" Piniella said. "Kerry feels he's ready [to close again], and you know what, he probably is. I think we give him one more tightener, and then we get him back in the closer's role."

The Cubs have missed Wood, who has 24 saves in 29 opportunities, but there haven't been that many save situations either. In the last 14 games, the bullpen has a 5-0 record and three saves.

"The amazing thing is in the 30 games or so that Wood's been out, or hasn't closed, there haven't been many closing opportunities," Piniella said.

Wood has had no problems with his back, which sidelined him on Friday, or his finger, which had a blister and forced him to go on the disabled list.

What a great win!
We should be able to take this double header for sure with Harden on the mound.
He was very un-Harden-like last time out, and with the extra rest I expect him to be very good.

Good move by Lou as well putting Marquis in the day matchup against Morton, who kinda sucks and placing Harden in the night game vs. Campillo who is better.
Gives us a better chance to win both games.

ATLANTA -- Because of Wednesday's doubleheader, the Cubs have to tweak the rotation for the upcoming series in Florida and may call upon Jeff Samardzija to start Sunday.

For Samardzija, who has not started since July 20, when he went six innings for Triple-A Iowa, the news was a welcome surprise.

"It'd be great," Samardzija said before Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves. "What day did [Lou Piniella] say? Sunday? It'll be hot."

Jason Marquis started the first game Wednesday against Atlanta and Rich Harden was to start the second, primarily because Harden prefers pitching under the lights. In night games, Harden is 22-13 with a 3.36 ERA in 60 games (55 starts), and in the day, he's 15-7 with a 3.34 ERA in 42 games (39 starts).

"I know he's told us his preference would be to pitch at night and in cooler weather," Piniella said of Harden, whom the Cubs acquired July 8 from Oakland, which doesn't play as many day games.

Harden's Tuesday start was postponed by rain, and he was originally scheduled to go Sunday in the series finale against the Florida Marlins. The Cubs may wait to see who they need in the Atlanta series before picking a starter for Sunday.

"I can't bring Harden back on short rest, but I can bring Marquis back possibly," Piniella said Wednesday. "By him pitching the day game, it gives him a little longer time. If not, we'll either pitch Samardzija or pitch [Sean] Marshall."

Marshall has made three starts for the Cubs this year, and is the long man in the bullpen. Samardzija's longest outing so far is 2 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh on Aug. 3, which also was the most pitches he's thrown (40) in his eight outings so far with the big league team. In his latest appearance Sunday, he threw eight pitches.

"Like I said when I first got here, I just want to come in and throw whenever they want to give me a shot and take it as far as I can take it," Samardzija said. "I'll just try to throw a lot of strikes and get some early action. Obviously with the doubleheader, someone's going to have to fill in. ... I'm ready for anything. My arm feels good, and has felt good ever since I've been here."

Because he has thrown almost every other day, Samardzija said his arm is still strong.

"You're still using your arm as much as if you're starting," he said. "As long as there's rest, I think it'll be fine."

If Samardzija did get the call, he would be rid of the pink backpack, at least for one day. The reliever with the least amount of service time carries it to the bullpen for each game.

"That would be a big plus," Samardzija said, laughing. "I've grown to hate it more and more every day, but it's all for fun. It does serve a great purpose -- there's a lot of good snacks and Red Bull. But it's an ugly backpack."

As far as hazing goes, it's pretty minimal.

"I'm sure [if I was in the NFL] I'd be tied to a goal post and I'm sure this [hair] wouldn't be here," he said.
I'd like to see the Shark get a start. But I also think Marshall should be the 5th starter. Because I don't think Shark has refined his control enough to be a starter, or developed a consistent out pitch. I think he's more of a thrower with great stuff then a pitcher currently. So 2nd and 3rd time against the lineup could get rough.

I also think that taking Shark out of the pen weakens it a lot more then if it's Marshall. I just hope whoever pitches, they make them consider getting rid of Marquis.

devilandthelord
08-13-2008, 07:06 PM
Yeah I'd rather have Marshall start. I have confidence in him, and I like the Shark where he's at.
I like him for 2 innings or so out of the bullpen just throwing as nasty and as hard as he can.
I don't think he's ready to start in the big leagues just yet.

Only distressing thing about the game so far is that Harden now has 5 Walks with only 1 Strikeout, even though he is still managing to shut them out.
That not like him.
5 walks in 5 innings against a better team will hurt him for sure.

ROAD WARRIORS

The Cubs did something on Wednesday that they hadn't done in almost forever -- swept a doubleheader on the road, winning each game by at least eight runs. The last time they did that, back in 1908 against the Cardinals (according to Elias), they won a World Series. This year, they continue to look like a team finally ready to end the long drought. And their play of late is making it tougher on the Brewers, who keep winning, too, but aren't making up much ground.

The Cubs have won seven straight road games. (Before going on this run, they were 21-30 away from Wrigley Field.) They're continuing to get tremendous production out of Jim Edmonds (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2993), who slugged his 16th home run on Wednesday. Kosuke Fukudome (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28948) showed some signs of breaking out of a lengthy funk with two hits and two RBIs. If this keeps up, the Brewers will have to focus on the wild card.

ATLANTA -- After mulling several possibilities for adjusting his rotation following Tuesday's rainout, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Wednesday night he'll start left-hander Sean Marshall on Sunday at Florida.

It would be the first start since July 6 at Class AAA Iowa for Marshall, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to finish off the Cubs' doubleheader sweep of the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.

Piniella said earlier in the day he considered bringing back Game 1 starter Jason Marquis on short rest or giving rookie Jeff Samardzija his first big-league start.

By the end of the night, however, Piniella said: ''We don't want to bring anybody back on three days' rest. And we can piggyback that game a little bit with Samardzija [in relief of Marshall].''

Wood 'tightened'

Piniella said Kerry Wood's perfect eighth in the nightcap was enough of the ''tightener'' he wanted to see before putting Wood back in the closer role for the first time since a blister problem sidelined him more than a month ago.

Wednesday's appearance was just the third for Wood since his last save opportunity, July 11.

''We're getting much closer,'' Piniella said. ''He threw some nice breaking balls for strikes. That'll free us now to start moving [Carlos] Marmol into the setup role.''

Soto mojo

Geovany Soto's ninth-inning home run in the first game was his 18th of the season, the most by a Cubs rookie since Randy Hundley hit 19 in 1966. The club rookie record is 25, set by Billy Williams in 1961.

''I started thinking about it quite a bit and kind of got stuck there,'' said Soto, whose previous homer was almost three weeks earlier. ''But if you've got good at-bats and you're seeing the ball, it's going to happen. You can't force it.''

Right-hander Angel Guzman continued an encouraging comeback from Tommy John elbow surgery Tuesday with three scoreless innings in a rehab start for Class AA Tennessee. He allowed three hits without a walk and struck out two.

Glad to see Marshall getting a start. Glad to see Wood is now back to being our closer, and great news about Guzman. If he's healthy he can replace Howry. If Guzman is Guzman, we'd have the scariest pen in the league.
