Good strikeout by Lilly in a clutch spot. Oh if our Cubbies win today and make it 8 straight road wins. It will be the first time since 1945 when we won 12 in a row during that season. Which also is the last time we won the NL and went to the World Series.

Fuk is 2 for 2. Now D-Lee is as well. I guess if you're in a slump, go play the Braves. If Fuk gets his confidence up, I think he'll start hitting again.

Sorry about the tricky hat, I didn't know :(. But I do think if Dempster has a similar ERA and can hit 20+ wins. He'd have to be right there in the voting.

I don't think 20 wins is realistic, but he'll probably end up with 17 or 18.

Do you think 18-7 with a sub 3.00 ERA would do it for him?

I dunno with guys like Brandon Webb around.

I thing he just bruised his hip. If it's serious we might be screwed. I hope this doesn't discourage Ramirez from hustling. He's been running full speed all year. Though he says leg injuries have stopped him from doing that in the past. But when have we ever seen him dive/slide like that?

Injured sliding at the plate. Something on his right side. Could be a hip or a oblique (sp?). The throw to the catcher was high, Ramirez got around him diving. Reach out to his left to tag the plate. Was rolling around in pain. Then eventually they got him up under his own power and helped him to the dugout. He scored, but at what cost?

Anytime you're in pain and can't get up, I'm worried. He was literally rolling around till they came out and helped him up. Once he was up he was able to walk under his own power. I'm not saying it looked horrible, but it didn't look good either. I'm worried. Hopefully it's nothing serious.

Right on about Reed and Edmonds, Jon.

I was just taking a look at the numbers and if you combine our centerfielders so far this year, without even taking into account Pie scrubbing it up for a couple weeks

Johnson and Edmonds come out to hitting .290 21 HR and 84 RBI combined.
Thats an all-star quality outfielder to this point in the season!

Take away Pie's time and they probably combine to about 23 HR and 90 RBI.

The more games I watch, the more apparent it is that this team is just so great from top to bottom.

Think about the 2003 team... we have 3 sick starting pitchers and another who's really good (Lilly) compared with 2 sick pitchers in '03 and one decent one (Clement).

We have a great 7-8-9 potential in the pen Samardzija-Marmol-Wood. Compared with Farnsworth and Mr. Borowski closing games like in '03.

Our hitting is stacked top to bottom... I mean comon: Paul Bako and Damian Miller...Geovanny Soto... no comparison

Outfield: Moises Alou, Kenny Lofton, Sammy Sosa
Outfield: Soriano, Edmonds/Johnson, Kosuke

Erik Karros/He Sop Choi vs. Derrek Lee

WA HA HA HA

Actually Zambrano was pretty good that year.

13-11 Record, 3.11 ERA, 214 innings pitched. His record would have been better with a good offense. Our 2003 rotation might have been better. Wood, Prior, Zambrano, and Clement were all good. Estes was the only crap guy, and he wasn't in the playoff rotation.

Now if Marshall were to be our 5th starter now, and we had the option to use him or Lilly in the playoffs. I'd take this years rotation. But what handicaps this rotation is Zambrano, Wood, and Prior were all work horses that year. Harden is an ace, but we need him to go longer then 5 innings in October.

Marshall plan moved up by a day

ATLANTA -- Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster was scheduled to return to Chicago on Thursday night to take care of a ''personal matter'' before rejoining the team in South Florida late Saturday.

The Cubs have pushed back Dempster's scheduled Saturday start by a day to accommodate him, and spot starter Sean Marshall gets his first start since July 6 moved up a day to cover.

Manager Lou Piniella also hinted that Jason Marquis could be skipped next time through the rotation against Cincinnati despite the right-hander's back-to-back wins, including a good performance Wednesday against Atlanta.

Piniella would confirm only that Rich Harden would open the Reds series Tuesday before backing away from his plans beyond that.

''Let's just leave it at that,'' he said, ''and save the pitching coach a headache.''

Ramirez hurt

Third baseman Aramis Ramirez left in the fifth inning Thursday after bruising his left hip sliding home. The injury is not considered serious, and his status is day-to-day.

Two innings earlier, Ramirez hit a three-run homer that gave him 20 homers and 30 doubles for the fifth straight season -- the first Cub to do that since Hack Wilson (1926-30).

Eye on September

As the Cubs head down the back nine of August, early discussions are under way about which players to add from the minors when rosters expand in September.

''We don't really want to be overloaded,'' Piniella said. ''I would think it would be on the order of a half-dozen or so.''

One, Piniella said, figures to be catcher Koyie Hill, who played an unsung role for last year's division winners by bridging the midseason gap between Michael Barrett and Jason Kendall.

If they go with six call-ups, that likely means two more hitters (possibly a speed guy such as Felix Pie and a lefty hitter such as Micah Hoffpauir) and three pitchers.

Piniella said his one discussion on the matter with assistant general manager Randy Bush yielded eight names of possible call-ups. He said he expects plans to get firmer during next week's homestand.
I'm glad Piniella is thinking of skipping Marquis. I mean honestly the best thing is for Marshall to start. You don't need 5 starters in the post season. You need 3, plus the occasional 4th. Get Marshall stretched out, so he can be the long reliever in the post season.

DMBZeppelin
08-15-2008, 06:08 AM
In case anyone is wondering, the stats of the possible call ups:

Hoffpauir
MLB -
.378 AVG, .410 OBP, .541 SLG, .951 OPS (19 games)
Iowa -
.377 AVG, .402 OBP, .779 SLG, 1.181 OPS (56 games)

Pie
MLB -
.222 AVG, .286 OBP, .286 SLG, .571 OPS (30 games)
Iowa -
.288 AVG, .332 OBP, .468 SLG, .800 OPS (68 games)

Koyie Hill
Iowa -
.280 AVG, .356 OBP, .489 SLG, .845 OPS (100 games)

Koyie Hill seems to have cooled off a lot. He went nuts mid season and was hitting damn near .400 and if not for Blanco being one of the best defensive catchers in the game. He'd have gotten called up.

Pie impresses me. He struggled for a LONG time after getting sent down. He's gotten it near .290 and its steadily gone up. If he's getting used to the new swing Piniella made him switch to (a shorter quicker swing). I wouldn't be surprised to see him get some starts in Sept. I know it says he played in 30 MLB games this year. Keep in mind that means pinch hitting, late defensive replacements. Not 30 starts.

Houffpair is getting screwed. The guy did nothing but hit when he was up here. He's done nothing but hit while down in Iowa. Yet I have to watch Daryl Ward struggle to pinch hit. The guy isn't a starter. His defense sucks. But Ward was a nasty bat off the bench. For whatever reason it's not happening for him this year. I hope Houffpair comes up and steals that job from Ward. Put Hoffpauir on the post season roster.

Soto 4 MVP?

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3536566&name=gammons_peter
Good read, and I really do agree. I mean I've known about Soto for YEARS. I knew he was suppose to be a good defensive catcher, but not much with the bat. Then he went nuts in AAA last year and won the MVP in his league. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if he ever won one as an MLB player. The defensive plays I've seen from him in clutch situations have been amazing.

It's like "Oh god here's a wild pitch with the bases loaded." and then there's Soto somehow getting to these balls. Thing is he's not even in his prime yet. Also he's gained some of the weight back that caused his insane offensive outburst last year. If he can get back to last year's weight. I think he'll be even better.

Control seems to be off, and a bit of a dead arm. He wasn't bad outside the inning where he gave up 4. I saw the inning right after that though. He hit 91 mph once, everything else was in the 80's on the radar gun. He seemed a little stronger later. Hopefully he'll get his act together, and if we can go on a long win streak. Perhaps skip him and Harden in the rotation. Get Marshall and Shark a start.

Ya his AVG as a pinch hitter probably went from .100 to .120 or something like that. Regardless, I hope he did. He needs to get his act together. If not hopefully he loses the job in September. Yeah, but each time he wasn't trying to come at him. Both pitches their catcher had set up on the outside and he missed right over the plate. He'd done the same thing a few other times in the inning already. Needless to say, Gregg's control was not sharp. Either way, D Ward absolutely crushed that ball. A no doubter off the bat. Cubs officials recalled that in their run at the National League pennant in 2003 they made a waiver deal for Rafael Palmeiro. "He didn't want to leave a last place team [the Rangers] for a shot at the World Series," says one Cubs official, "unless we guaranteed him another year on his contract. Wasn't going to happen."
:lol I remember when this happened. For a couple days it was like "Will he accept the trade?" and everyone thought he would. I forget what we gave up in the deal that never happened.

Mark DeRosa says he and teammate Jeff Samardzija "are the best passing combination in the major leagues right now." DeRosa was an outstanding quarterback at the University of Pennsylvania and had numerous opportunities to try out in the NFL. He and Samardzija threw a football around a couple of times until Cubs coaches stopped them, although they do throw it around the clubhouse.

Teammates say they knew when Samardzija struggled in Class A that part of the problem was going from playing in front of 100,000 fans in college football to 400 in the boonies.

"Not really," says Samardzija. "I knew what I was in for when I signed. The biggest thing was getting my arm angle and split back. When I was at Notre Dame, my arm slot kept dropping down, and I lost my split. In spring training, I got my arm slot back, and the more I pitched, the more the split came back.

"But I will admit that it's a lot more fun pitching in front of these crowds."

The crowds follow him. At Wood's bowling tournament, the crowds of girls surrounding Samardzija got so out out of hand that security had to be provided for him.

"It's a great thing to be Jeff Samardzija in Chicago right now," says one teammate.
DeRosa and Shark should go try out for DAAAA BEARS.

Cuban would be great fit to join Cubs' family
Monday, August 11, 2008 | Print Entry (http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3529942&type=blogEntry)

The sale of the Cubs hangs over Wrigley Field and under the refrain of "Go Cubs Go." Conventional thinking says Bud Selig will quilt together his selected group around John Canning; after all, the last time there was a sale without it being chosen and manipulated by Selig was when Arte Moreno bought the Angels, a transition that has been a boon to the Angels franchise and the game.

But there is increasing speculation that Sam Zell, the chairman and chief executive officer of the Tribune Company, is not going to allow the Commissioner's Office to puppeteer the sale, and that Mark Cuban is in this thing far deeper than Selig and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf want to believe. NBA commissioner David Stern has told those associated with Cubs that Cuban is one of the NBA's best partners, and everyone appreciates that Cuban understands fans and marketing, and is one of the creative pioneers in the world of new media and would create a tremendous buzz throughout baseball that would be nothing but beneficial to the industry.

So he might yell at Joe West? George Steinbrenner did a lot worse to umpires, and what Steinbrenner did for baseball because of how he grew the Yankees will put him in Cooperstown and has put a lot of money in other owners' pockets.

Last week, Cuban attended Kerry Wood's charity bowling tournament and won the bid for dinner for 10, including Wood and Ryan Dempster. "He's a really special person," said Dempster of Cuban. "His energy and enthusiasm is unbelievable."

There are three truly national baseball teams -- the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs (one might add the Dodgers, but generations of apathetic business ownership leaves them behind despite their history). Instead of worrying about fining teams for paperwork in the signing of draft choices and the harassing of teams that go above the artificial slotting system, baseball should embrace owners like Cuban who can help grow the sport and attract an even wider fan base.

Cubs chairman Crane Kenney has begun the remodeling of Wrigley and has attempted to move the ballpark from the 1950s into the 21st Century. By adding Cuban, the Cubs might quickly become the premiere franchise of the National League. This would be great for baseball and great for a city that this past weekend -- and this entire season -- has been the center of the baseball universe.
Honestly every time I see that Cuban might be able to get around Selig and his crap system, I want to shed a tear. Seriously I want him to buy the Cubs so bad. For all the hate I once had for Zell, it may turn out to be the best thing ever. Someone who doesn't give a damn about pleasing Selig.

He needs to get his endruance back up, but he did give us a chance to win. The start before this was that huge one he had in St. Louis. He constantly comes through with what we ask of him. I really hope he gets another start.

Ok, I think DeRosa has the same number of RBI's as Derek Lee. D Lee is having a bit of a down year if you ask me. It'd be nice to see him get some of that power back. When's the last time he's hit one out?

Although, maybe that just tells you how valuable Mark is. Seriously, he might be my favorite Cub right now. You know he is going to go out there and give it everything he's got, and he plays so many positions.

Honestly, I think Mark should get some starts in right field so we can get Mike Fontenot in there more. That guy just has the look of a potential real good hitter in this league. Right now Fontenot has a hot bat and Kosuke has the opposite. I mean, he hit a couple hard line drive outs today and was having a real tough time with some of the calls their pitchers were getting on the corners against him today, but at the same time, Mike just seems to find ways to get hits every day he is in there.

I agree with more sneaky power and less spinning man.

The only negative is the slight defensive loss we would have with Fontenot at 2nd instead of DeRo and DeRo in the outfield instead of Kosuke. I mean, as bad as Fuk has been at the plate, he still plays a pretty sharp right field and that's still very important.

Starting with Harden vs. Cueto tonight.

Looking forward we have Lilly vs. Arroyo and Big Z vs. Harang.

Video review near

Despite a spat with the umpires' union about details of implementing instant replay, major-league officials expect a system of video review for close home-run calls to be operational in all ballparks for the September pennant drives.

The hardware, including monitors, already has been installed at Wrigley Field in the umpire's room, accessible through the Cubs' dugout.

The umpires, who want a delay that MLB appears unwilling to grant, have issues with officials in New York making the calls and with the problems associated with umpires leaving the field to handle reviews.

Barring a delay, the system might be in place for the Cubs' next homestand, which starts Aug. 28 against the Philadelphia Phillies.
I think it's about time MLB caught up with the rest of the world. If done right, replay won't slow down the game. I'm all for getting the calls right.

I know people tend to hate on Ted, but he's been fairly solid for us. He's gone 6 innings or more in all but 3 starts since April 12th, and hasn't given up more than 4 earned runs in an outing since April 17th. Also, he's got a perfect game going through 3 tonight. :D

Well now he won't finish with one thanks to you! :twenty4

JK, anyway yeah you're right.
We're just spoiled by having other more awesome starters this year (Z, Harden, Demps) who can go out and be dominant any given start.
Lilly just makes me nervous a lot of times because we all know he's capable of having those blow-up games where he gives up 6-8 runs out of nowhere.
But I agree with you, overall he's very solid.
I'm glad to have him on the staff.

I don't know. Everyone's capable of this. It happened to Z a couple starts ago. Ted has had one game where he gave up 7 runs, and only 4 of them were earned. He's been steady, and he almost always keeps the team in the game.

Also, it kind of makes me ill when we get runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs and Kosuke can't manage to get one of them home. The guy is playing terrible, it's time for a change for a couple games.

We need to re-evaluate him and think about what his role should be going into the stretch run and playoffs.

Let me see if I get this straight, in order to get a W in the win column the team needs to... needs to... needs to win their games. Is that right? And would they do this by scoring more runs than the other team?

They'd only score more runs then the other team, if they want to win. If you got a group of guys who want to win. You might have a team, but if you have a team that wins. Well then you got a great team.

But what it really... it really... it really comes down to is pitching. If your guy can't make pitches in the strike zone he will not be successful. If you look at the track record of Cy Young winners, they generally have success in the strike zone.
