Holy shit. What? The offense needs to bust out big in the late innings today. We really can't afford to lose games to Washington when we have such a tough stretch on the road to finish the season.
I just can't believe Marquis. He pitches solid ball for 5 innings, and then has a meltdown. This is his MO. If he could just stop fucking walking people when things get tight, he'd be an alright pitcher. You just can't trust him, though.

Ya know, when you get through the first 5 innings with a 4-0 lead, it's hard to expect you'll give up 10 runs in the next 3 innings. Just ridiculously bad pitching. Marquis was pitching so fucking well, and really he deserves the blame because he couldn't help from giving up those 2 walks that killed us. He and Cotts needed to stop the bleeding and they failed miserably.

Actually they just need to play .500 baseball. We're 29 games over. 81+29 = 100. Winning every series will get us to 100, but well past it. Which I'm fine with.

You're thinking halfway. 29 games over .500 is equal to 14.5 up, 14.5 down from 81.
So 95 and 67. Or 96 and 66.

Well, first...81+29=110 But your logic is off because its not the half way point in the season, theres only about a month left. You have 79 wins with 33 left. You need to win 21 which is greater than .500. Going back to your original logic you would actually need to be 38 or 39 over .500 at the half way point to play .500 from there out to end at 100.
Math pwn. sorry.

Horrible idea, and not just because of Z's ego. As much as we all love Harden, he's not someone you're bringing back on short rest. While Dempster can handle short rest, this is his first season back starting. It's a HUGE work load increase for him.
So I mean chances are whoever pitches Game 1 may need to pitch Game 4 or 5, and whoever pitches Game 2 may need to pitch Game 5. Also it's only August, Zambrano could be back to normal for the playoffs. He struggled last August as well. I say you ride the hot hand between Zambrano and Dempster.
If you pitch Harden game 3 of the NLDS, he'll probably pitch Game 1 or 2 of the NLCS.
devilandthelord
08-24-2008, 10:44 PM
I still think that Z should be our guy.
Just overall its best for the team.
Its gotta be so sick for other teams to look at us as perspective playoff opponents and see that we will be bringing Z, Demps and Harden the first 3 games and that all of those guys could pitch twice in a 7 game series.
I mean thats awesome. All those guys have pitched like number ones this year.

Z is the most durable and capable of pitching on short rest, even though I don't believe he has a very good record when doing so. However, with him pitching in the first game, he should eat up at least 7 innings and is capable of being really, really good. Even if he's not terribly sharp, you have Dempster coming back in the next game as almost surely the better pitcher than whoever the other team has going. And when Harden pitches against the other team's #3, that's almost a sure win, the way things have been going lately.
Really, this scenario plays out the same if Dempster is #1, too, but I just think with Dempster's consistency, he is almost a lock to outduel any other team's #2 starter.

Well, I dunno.
They got Wellemeyer vs. Sheets in the first game, so normally I'd give that to the Brewers, but Sheets is 1-5 in his last 6 starts, and Wellemeyer's not bad. So who knows?
Then the second game they got Adam Wainright, who pitched 6 innings and gave up only one run in his first start off the DL, going against Manny Parra, so they could do it.
Meanwhile we've crushed the Pirates tonight, and we've got Big Z going up against Ian Snell tomorrow, so I'd think we'll be getting a "W" again tomorrow.
But we'll just have to see, won't we? :D

That's Debatable: Which team has the best rotation?
Monday's question, courtesy of Adam from Hampshire, Ill.:
Which team has the best starting rotation (1-5) in all of baseball? My pick is the Chicago Cubs (Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden, Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis).
Normally, we don't tinker with your questions here at That's Debatable. But not this week. This week, Adam, we're tinkering. So here's the question we're actually debating:
Which team has the best postseason rotation?
We opted to make that change because teams almost never use five starting pitchers in October. In fact, teams that win the World Series tend to lean on their top three starters -- so even the No. 4 starter barely pitches. Each of the last three Series champs used their 1-2-3 starting pitchers in all but two games of the entire postseason.
Essentially, this debate comes down to which team has the best top three, with a respectable fourth starter hanging around to start one game in the LCS and World Series if you need him. And here are the main teams in that argument:
THE CASE FOR THE CUBS
It doesn't get much better than Rich Harden, Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster, with Ted Lilly as your safety valve. The Cubs are 42-18 (a .700 winning percentage) when those three start. And since Lilly's rough April (1-4, 6.46), they're 15-6 when he starts.
THE CASE FOR THE DIAMONDBACKS
The only other team besides the Cubs that has two starters in the top 10 in lowest opponent OPS is Arizona -- with (guess who?) Brandon Webb (.597) and Dan Haren (.635). And if your No. 3 starter is Randy Johnson (1.56 ERA since the break), and your No. 4 is either Doug Davis or the underrated Yusmeiro Petit (.565 opponent OPS), you have one terrifying group.
THE CASE FOR THE ANGELS
No other rotation in the American League has three starters who have held opposing hitters to a sub-.700 OPS. But the Angels do, in Ervin Santana (.647), Joe Saunders (.688) and John Lackey (.691).
THE CASE FOR THE RED SOX
If Josh Beckett and Tim Wakefield were healthy, this staff might be the pick. The Red Sox are the only rotation in baseball with four starters -- Daisuke Matsuzaka, Jon Lester, Wakefield and Beckett -- in the top 50 in lowest opponent OPS. But until we know that Beckett is OK, it's tough to make a great case for this group.
OTHERS IN THE DEBATE
The Dodgers' numbers are skewed slightly by pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium, but they have tremendous rotation depth with Chad Billingsley, Derek Lowe, Hiroki Kuroda, Greg Maddux and Clayton Kershaw. Ditto on the Brewers -- with C.C. Sabathia, Ben Sheets, Manny Parra, Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan.
Can't overlook Tampa Bay's Big Three -- Scott Kazmir, Matt Garza and James Shields. They're the single biggest reason the Rays are heading for October. And the White Sox, Twins and Mets (if John Maine is reasonably healthy) also go four-deep.
THE VERDICT
Well, Adam, we may have messed with your question -- but not your answer. Crunch those numbers, friends, and it's clear the Cubs are the pick. They're the only team in baseball that has three starters in the top 27 in opponent OPS. They're the only rotation that has three starters in the top 20 in strikeout ratio (a group that doesn't include Zambrano, by the way). They lead the sport in starters' ERA and opponent batting average. And they would be the only team in baseball with three starters in the top 15 in VORP (Baseball Prospectus' Value Over Replacement Player stat) if Harden's numbers for the Cubs and A's were combined. So feel free to argue away, but I'll take the Cubs with no second thoughts.

the Cubs' 12-3 romp over the Pirates has the Cubs staring at some lofty historical franchise landmarks:
• • They moved to 31 games over .500 for the first time since they finished the 1984 season 96-65.
• • That put them on the verge of a 32-games-over, high-water mark that would be a first since Sept. 2, 1969.
• • And if they win one of the next two games to beat the Pirates -- who dropped into a last-place tie with Cincinnati in the NL Central --it will give them nine straight series wins for the first time since they won 10 straight to open the '07 season. The 1907 season.
Forget 100. We're starting to talk about 101-year significance.

He's got be kidding me. People at Wrigley aren't there not paying attention. You'll hear the collective cheer or groan each and every game. If the pitcher has 2 strikes with 2 out, everyone is on their feet.
I've been to a White Sox game before, it's not that great. I think they have better food then Wrigley. But seriously like every half inning there's some bullshit going on. Whether it be some sort of race for this or that, or someone coming onto the field.

Did you know that because there are so few latinos in the NFL, he is on the cover of the Spanish edition of Madden 09?
How funny is that?
Also, I'd love to draft with you guys, but I'm at work and its blocked. Sorry.

Big Z bringing the RBIs again! Good work Z. 8 straight games with an RBI.
And a 13 game hitting streak. Lol, what if a pitcher broke the 56 straight game hitting streak when only hitting every 5 days?

They said it was only an 8 game hitting streak on the game, is that an error? They also mentioned the RBI thing so I know it wasn't an error. If Zambrnao broke the 56 straight, that be great.
I also expect him to settle down now. Even though he knows it's not his job, Zambrano lets his hitting effect his pitching. Now that Z got a lead, and got an RBI single himself. He'll feel better and pitch better. Crazy Z.

Actually, did you know that Madden is not one of the commentators this year?
He's just the "host" of the game basically.
The commentators are Chris Collinsworth and somebody else who I can't remember right now.

Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit are pretty good young players.
At least the Pirates have that going for them.

So many choices for that, but it'd be tough to argue against him when you look at everything he's done for the team this year.
Without D-Ro we mighta been sunk this year.
He's got my vote. :thumbsup
