Mr. Ted Hendry, our GM.
It was pretty cool.

Wow. Looks like the calls are going against us today. Justice, I suppose. But really, Ted should've been called safe on that missed tag earlier in the game, and Victorino should absolutely not have gotten first. He swung his arms down into the ball....I mean, no attempt whatsoever to get out of the way. Call could've cost us a couple of runs. Either way, Ted shouldn't have been throwing the breaking pitches in those spots anyway. He wasn't fooling anybody, and the fastball has been working all day.
The offense sure sucks, though. What the fuck is going on with these jokers? 8 hits and only 1 run? We should have at least 3-4 runs by now.

this could relate to the phils too. The Phils only have 5 wins against the Mets because of the terrible mets bullpen. The Mets could be 15-0 against philly instead of 10-5 if not for the bullpen, because we've been beating up on you all year....

Hoffpauir and Lieber among returnees
Three hitters and three pitchers will be arriving today as rosters expand, and all except one has major-league experience.
The position players are left-handed-hitting first baseman Micah Hoffpauir, who hit a team-best .362 with 25 home runs and 100 RBI for Class AAA Iowa; catcher Koye Hill, who batted .275 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI at Iowa; and right-handed-hitting third baseman Casey McGehee, 25, who will be added to the 40-man roster. McGehee hit .296 at Iowa with 12 home runs and 92 RBI.
The pitchers are Jon Lieber and Angel Guzman, both activated from the disabled list, and Michael Wuertz, who returns after being sent down July 11. Wuertz pitched in 17 games with Iowa, going 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA. Guzman returns after starting the season on the disabled list after elbow surgery, and Lieber returns after going on the disabled list July 11 with a right foot strain.

The offense has been absent lately. At least today we can credit Oswalt for just shutting us down. However, lately the trouble we've had getting any clutch hits or 2-out hits is very disconcerting. The LOB numbers do not bode well for our chances in the playoffs, if we get there and don't completely tank.

We don't pay D Lee for two singles in the first and third inning. Earn your money man. come up with a ribbie in a clutch spot!
I'm not panicked and definitely not freaking out just because we lost a few. It's baseball, it happens. We still have a five game lead in the division and the best NL record and almost the best in all of baseball. We hit four solo shots, but we just didn't come up big in the big spots.
Tonight sucked, but I'm not freaking.
Bron Yr Aur
09-03-2008, 02:44 AM
I agree with you somewhat about D. Lee. He got jumpy when they had the bases loaded. No doubt. However, he hit that ball hard, it just happened to be right at somebody. The strikeout was bullshit because he took a ball that was called a strike and was forced to swing at the same damn pitch because of it. However, the lack of RBIs in clutch spots is sickening.
But Lou deserves some of the blame. He waited until the 11th to use Ward, and left Hoffpauir on the bench. But he got Blanco and Casey McGehee an at-bat? What the fuck? He is so dead set on his matchups he'd go with worse hitters in these spots. Taking out Fontenot for Blanco (in the 10th?) was just plain stupid. Putting in Howry in a close game was stupid. At some point, you can't have the guy coming into games where he is going to blow it for you. And Wuertz to stop the bleeding? Bad move but at least Wuertz did his job.
I feel bad for Kerry Wood right now, because they were forced to put him out there for more pitches than he should have had to throw, and it came back to bite him. And he should've only given up 1 run because that ball 4 call on Berkman was in actuality, strike 3.
The culprits tonight: D. Lee, Howry, Piniella
The rest of the offense did its job for the most part. But damn, some of Lou's decisions lately. Jeebus.
Also cause for concern is Zambrano's play. Wow, this guy was one of the most dominant starters in the league for most of the season, but now he's just been average to bad. NOT good. Hopefully he's getting this stretch out of him.
And I'm not extremely worried, however, these games just do not bode well for the team. It's hard to really get terribly concerned when you have a 4.5 game lead and are still 30 games above .500, but this is the Cubs, and I've seen this shit happen so many times it just becomes sickening after a while. You just wait for this shit to happen. A total choke-job by the team tonight. No other way to put it. From the pitching to the fielding to the hitting to the managing.

Most of you guys are so damn negative it makes me want to vomit. It reminds me of annoying obnoxious Red Sox/Yankees fans, constantly criticizing your team in a very negative way every step of the way. The Brewers lost last night too so we're all good. 4 straight losses and we are still 31 games above .500 and in 1st place with 23 games to go holding a 4.5 game lead....fucking relax. I've been a fan for my entire life and the last thing I want to see is people bitching as if they have the right to be pricks. To each their own obviosuly, I just won't be coming to this thread as often because of the undeserving ridicule, yell at your tv and try not to have a bitch fest online, be more optimistic. Totally not gay. I've had huge man-crush on DeRo since last year. Too bad his effort went for naught last night thanks to Howry and D(P)-Lee. That was just a bad, bad game, and I had a feeling they were gonna lose as soon as it went into extras. Hopefully they'll get 'em today.

I was thinking about Derek Lee overall as a hitter this year and it made me very, very angry with him.
He's in my doghouse.
I need to see some big hits from him, in important spots and to be able to drive the ball affirmatively.
HolyCow
09-03-2008, 01:49 PM
Something I've noticed about D Lee lately is a little nervous "tell."
He always does that little back stretch thing where he lifts his hands/bat over his head and kind of shrugs for a second before getting into his stance.
But the last few nights in REALLY big spots, he's done it more often and more exaggerated. Now I played ball too and you get nervous and I'm not saying a big leaguer shouldn't, but I think Lee is feeling pressure in those big spots.
Maybe I'm out of my mind with the "tell" but I've been noticing that.

I would rather both teams suck at the same time then say the Cubs suck and Brewers roll. All that would do is tickle my balls and make me feel good just to have the acorns squashed when the following week the Cubs roll and the Brewers blow up, then we are right back to where we started. There are enough ups and downs in the season, Im fine with it being idle for now.

The lack of hitting over the past week is a BIG concern. They are leaving runners on base. No clutch hits. Apparently so. They fold whenever a bit of pressure is put on them. Fucked up. Nice example of it. D Lee gets a belt high fastball down the pipe and rolls over it for a basehit grounder. I'll take the basehit, though, who cares. But Ramirez gets the same pitch and pops out in foul ground. Pathetic. They just never seem to be able to hit pitchers' mistakes.
Edit: Jesus, there's the same thing with Soto. Weak fly out on a fastball down the middle of the plate. This is getting really fucked up in a hurry.

I think you guys are pretty much a lock for the post-season. The Brewers have decided that they dont want to go anymore.

I mean, they let the Reds pitchers off the hook all day long. Imagine what will happen when/IF we face the Diamondbacks. Yeah. I mean, what the fuck? It looks like they are just trying to throw the season away. The hitting with RISP or 2-outs just looks pitiful. And then THAT happens in the bottom of the 9th. I mean. PLAY SOME FUCKING DEFENSE.

I'm in line for Berkeley watching the box score on my phone. Words can't describe how upset I am over them blowing that game. This whole weekend has been horrible.

I really excited about football season, but we can't forget about our Cubs.
Jesus we need some help to get out of this funk.
Worst stretch we've had all year.
Some people need to step up and carry this team.

Wow they were showing the Wild Card standings on Sports Center. Astros are only 5 back and have gone 30-11 since July 27th I believe was the date. Phillies are 3 out and Cards are 4 1/2 out. That Wild Card race is starting to get tight.
