Nice stat in the Suntimes:

The odds of the Cubs tailspinning all the way out of the postseason are extremely long. Just do the math. If they win only one game in each series the rest of the way for a 6-13 finish, the top challenger in a would-be wild-card race, Philadelphia, would need to go 13-5 to tie the Cubs.

And didn't the Phils get superhot at the end of the season last year?

Soto Named NL Rookie of the Month

The Cubs catcher has been selected as Gillette's Rookie of the Month for August in the National League after capturing that same award in April.

Soto was selected over National League nominees Chris Perez of the Cardinals, Jeff Samardzija of the Cubs and Ian Stewart of the Rockies.

In a month when starting catchers traditionally wear down from the grind of a long season, Soto was an extraordinary exception. He hit .355 in August with five doubles, three homers and 21 RBIs. Soto drew 13 walks and scored 17 runs during the month.

Soto's durability at a tough position has been one of his greatest assets. Through August, he had made 124 starts. The only catchers in the National League who had played more were Russell Martin of the Dodgers and Jason Kendall of the Brewers.

Lou is starting to fuck things up a bit. Is he not paying attention anymore? I know one time last week he had Casey Fucking McGehee pinch-hit when he had Daryl Ward because of the matchups. FUCK. THAT.

Then against the Reds he doesn't intentionally walk a guy to set up a double play opportunity and the guy wins the game with a hit. Same thing happens tonight.

And how about keeping Marmol out there. If you're going to use Marmol in almost every game, you cannot leave him out there for more than one inning. They have a lot of guys in the fucking pen.

But how about the fucking offense. WHAT. THE. FUCK. These guys better get their shit together fast. You don't give your team much of a chance to win if you're going to score 3 runs every game. And absolutely nothing after the 2nd inning? Absolutely pathetic. This team looks done. Lou needs to make a scene, kick some asses into gear...SOMETHING.

Yeah, just look at us. We're all going crazy and seeing flashbacks of 1969 - even though I was effing no where to be found. I was just in my dad's urethra.

We're arguing about Lou's sense, arguing about D Lee and things are going bad. We're still in first place, we're still headed to October. If you'd have told me we'd have a three game lead in September and one game off the best record in baseball back in March, I would have been totally psyched. If it works out, then it works out. Piniella Erupts

Another blown lead, another missed chance to step on an opponents throat in the middle innings and another loss on the last play of the game left the Cubs gasping again Tuesday night -- their eighth loss in nine games finally igniting Lou Piniella's fury like it hasn't been ignited since he got to Chicago last year.

''We're playing like we're waiting to get beat,'' Piniella said, building into a red-faced, two-minute eruption that reverberated into the hallway outside his office at Busch Stadium following a 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

''We had many chances today again and we had many chances Sunday against Cincinnati, and it's the same result!'' he said. ''If we had played ball like this all year, we wouldn't be here playing for a championship! We'd be playing a spoiler role for somebody else!

''I know we're trying. I've got no complaints about with the effort. But you've got to get the job done! We can talk about having fun. We can talk about relaxing. But you've got to get your damn shirts rolled up and go out and kick somebody's ass! That's what you've got to do! Period!''

I saw this posted on www.bleedcubbieblue.com (http://www.bleedcubbieblue.com) the other day. Let's hope they can actually pull their heads from their collective ass and make it happen!

After blazing through the first five months of this year with nothing worse than a four-game losing streak, the Cubs have now lost seven of eight. What we wonder, then, is how recent championship teams have fared. Have they gone through stretches like this? Some of you have posted this in the comments, but I thought I'd consolidate all the information here, to console and bring optimism back.

The answer to the question above is decidedly, yes. Here's how each of the last eight World Series winners did down the stretch:

2007 Red Sox: Had a 7-game lead on September 4. Then, they lost 8 of 12 and saw their lead drop to one game on September 19. Finished the season 6-3 to win the AL East by two games and had an 11-3 record in the postseason.

2006 Cardinals: Had a 7-game lead on September 19. Then, they lost 7 in a row and 8 of 9 to see the lead drop to a half game with three games left. Won two of the three and clinched on the season's last day even though they lost. Had an 11-5 record in the postseason.

2005 White Sox: Had a 9-game lead on September 7. Then, they lost 10 of 14, including two in extra innings; the lead dropped to 1.5 games on September 22 (and would have gone to 0.5 games if Grady Sizemore hadn't lost a ball in the sun vs. the Royals). After that, won 8 of their last 10 regular season games and went 11-1 in the postseason.

2004 Red Sox: Went 7-8 between September 9 and 24, but still won the wild card (by five games) and went 11-3 in the postseason.

2003 Marlins: Not to be discussed in polite company.

2002 Angels: Lost 8 of their last 13 regular season games, but won the wild card by six games and went 11-5 in the postseason.

2001 Diamondbacks: Went 10-11 in September and saw a 4.5 game lead dwindle to 1.5 games; won four of their last six regular season games and went 11-6 in the postseason.

2000 Yankees: Stumbled into the postseason by losing six in a row, winning two, then losing their final seven regular season games (overall, losing 13 out of their last 15!) and seeing a 9 game lead on September 13 shrink to 2.5 at season's end, winning the AL East only because the Red Sox couldn't play better than .500 ball in September; had a mediocre 87-74 record (the worst of any of the 2000 postseason entrants) but went 11-5 in the postseason.

That's seven different championship teams in the last eight years; every single one of them (including the 2003 Marlins, who I glossed over) struggled in September, but righted the ship once October started. This Cubs team is at least as good as any of those champions and better than most.

Ya it's a long season, we need to hit our second wind. Though it's all over if Z and Harden aren't healthy.

Uhh....wow. Lou had NO BUSINESS WHATSOEVER taking Lilly out of that game. He was dominating the Cardinals hitters in the last 3 innings he pitched, and was only at 90 pitches. Lucky. Kerry Wood needs to get his shit together, though. He through the exact same pitch to Ludwick that just got knocked off the wall by Pujols, and of course, he paid a similar price. What a moron.

While I agree they should have let Lilly finish it off, lets not act like Wood fell apart. He blew one save, where he was asked to go two innings. Never easy for a closer. He blew it, but all closers will blow one now and again.

Tonight he was given a 3 run lead, and his task was to end the game with the lead. He did that. Now would I like to see him be dominating and not give up any runs or hits? Sure, but just getting the job done is enough for now.

Another reason I wanted Lilly to finish though is because this pen needs rest. There was a period of time where Wood and Marmol pitched almost every night. Remember when they almost had Wood go 5 days in a row? Or did he go 5? It was something crazy like that.

CUBS IN BRIEF: Theriot doesn't like Ike, wants out of Houston

ST. LOUIS -- As if the Cubs didn't have enough turbulence to deal with these days, the possibility of getting caught in hurricane-force weather in Houston looms this weekend.

The Cubs are in contact with Major League Baseball and the Astros about whether and when to play in Houston with Hurricane Ike expected to hit the Texas coastline this weekend. Projections late Wednesday showed a landfall late Friday or early Saturday, possibly at Category 4 force, with Houston at the edge of the path.

A decision from MLB was expected today.

''I don't want to go,'' said shortstop Ryan Theriot, who has experience with hurricanes as a native and resident of Baton Rouge, La. ''I understand why the Astros want to play their games there. That makes perfect sense to me. But that storm is going to turn, and if it does turn, they evacuate the city. And then what do you do?

''Now we're stuck. We going to hop on a bus? And go where? With everybody else? Take a bus from Houston to Chicago? I just don't know what the outcome would be, and it's so hard to predict these storms.''

First baseman Derrek Lee, a former Florida Marlin and a member of the 2004 Cubs team that skipped a trip to South Florida in a similar case, also had concerns -- and a solution.

''Let's go to a neutral site, play three and get it over with,'' he said. ''Why risk it?''

But that was not among the scenarios being discussed Wednesday, according to one MLB source -- despite a rumor circulating at Busch Stadium that the teams might play this weekend in St. Louis, with the Cardinals headed to Pittsburgh after tonight's game.

For now, the discussions have focused more on using the four-day window (including a mutual day off Monday) to get in the three scheduled games while avoiding the worst weather, the source said. The Astros released a statement that included the possibility of moving Friday night's game to an afternoon start.

''Whatever Major League Baseball decides, it'll be safe, I think, and it'll be the right decision,'' manager Lou Piniella said.
Ok, I'm with Theriot on this one. In no way shape or form should they be playing an afternoon game with the Hurrican expected later that day. What if it goes into extras? I'd guess they'd have to post pone because of rain.

If they fit the games in here and there, and take away those teams rest and make them travel all over. All it will do is hurt both teams post season chances.

I love Billy Corgan for calling out LA and New York fans. It's the truth, but it made me laugh. Though I don't get the whole "healthy distance" thing. Maybe I'm too young, but it drive me crazy not to keep up with the Cubs.

The sixteen year old girl made me laugh. Because she was saying people tell her she's too young to get it. Which she actually is. She was 11 in 2003. You have to be in an adult state of mind, and experiance your first Cubs heart break to get it. When you're young you think anything is possible.

That's just a RIDICULOUS statement.
I hate you! I hate you! I hate you, Derek Lee! :BANG

D. Lee is worthless.
I think you guys over react to D-Lee. Seriously time and time again I see D-Lee and Ramirez strike out. Yet everyone flips out on just D-Lee. Even in this game both came up dry. Even though D-Lee is hitting for a higher average. He's not having a career year, but at least we have a 1B. They don't grow on trees.

But he has a higher average then Soriano, Soto, and Ramirez. He was 2nd till last night, but he's now 3rd in the NL with hits. Pujols just passed up D-Lee in hits. Reyes has 184, Pujols 171, and D-Lee 169. He's 26th in the NL with RBI's.

Among ALL MLB 1st Basemen D-Lee ranks:
AB: 1st - 573
Runs: 7th - 87
Hits: 3rd - 169
Doubles: 5th - 36
Triples: 7th - 3
Home Runs: 17th - 18
RBI: 14th - 82
Stolen Bases: 2nd - 8
Walks: 12th - 65
Strikeouts: 9th - 105
AVG: 8th - .292
OBP: 12th - .362
SLG: 16th - .458
OPS: 14th - .827

Now I get his power numbers are WAY down the second half. But he had it back in St. Louis. He had a home run ball go foul. He was driving his base hits, and flying out to the outfield. So if it's back, it's coming back going into the post season. Though I don't think he'll ever get it back fully. I think the Furcal wrist injury stopped us from ever getting back that 05' D-Lee.

Edit: As far as those power/RBI numbers go. He's in the middle, but there's not a lot of distance from around 15th to the top 10. If he gets on a roll, he could easily be in the top 10 with everything. Keep in mind all those stats are ALL MLB 1st basemen.

TapNorris
09-12-2008, 10:26 AM
Last night they showed a stat for D Lee...of his 18 HR's, 14 of them are solo shots. So what's the deal with runners on? If he's not grounding into DP's, he's popping up and striking out. Is he pressing too much when he's got men on? What's the problem with D Lee? He was not clutch last night when he needed to be.

True, but at least ramirez has proven that he can come through in the clutch time and time again. Lee, in my mind has slowly evolved into theriot, a hitter who mainly hits singles with the occasional double mixed in. When he hits his homeruns they are during meaningless spots in the game. Also to go along with the number of rally killing double plays he hits into what seems like every other game. His fielding has also declined this year as well, once 2008 is over it wouldn't be a bad idea to at least explore other options for first base

So I've been listening to Some Devil a lot lately and it always reminds me of the Cubs winning the division in '03 and the playoffs that year...obviously because it was released in late Sept. of that year. Anyone else listen to that album and get taken back to the fun that we all had until Game 6 of the NLCS? I'm going to keep listening and remembering those times and just pray that we can finish it off the right way this time.

HAHAHAHAHA Look at what 2 error Lopez said Quote:
Lopez was not impressed with Cubs lefty Ted Lilly, who worked eight innings Wednesday. "I don't know about anybody else, but to me he's not that good," Lopez said. "I'm not going to give him that much credit."

What a goober. Hey, Lopez, why don't you go ask Molina what he thinks about Lilly!

I just watched all the videos, and read every story. I mean the very first guy, who's worried he'll die before the Cubs win it all. Makes me sad because I'm 23 and feel the exact same way.

How awesome is it to be named Wrigley Fields?
:thumbsup

I feel the same way as the old guy. For his sake, we need to do this.

And I didn't get the healthy distance thing either. Last year, I knew we didn't have a team that could make a run, so in the playoffs, I kept my expectations low. I watched the games and rooted as hard as ever, but I didn't get my hopes up. This year - it's going to be different. Which is a bad thing.

And I was 18 in 2003. I knew what was going on, but I feel like such more of a mature Cubbie now. There's no way she got it at 11. I laid under my bed and cried for an hour after Game 7.

I was pissed after Game 6 but balled after Game 7.

That girl definitely doesn't get it yet. Those stories are AMAZING. The video that plays with everyone in it gives me the fucking chills...damn

I agree with the guy that says that it isn't gonna happen, but that it HAS TO happen. Honestly, it does have to happen!

And the healthy distance??? I'd go fucking crazy if I didn't live & die with the cubs.

Last night was what it's all about. If I missed out on moments like that, what would I be?
Deep fly by Lopez that Fuk tracks down: "OH YEAH! HOLY CRAP!!! YES! YES! YES"

Marmol strikes out Phelps: "AHH!!! WE ARE THE GREATEST TEAM EVER!"

Woody gives up a lead off double to Ryan: "That's alright, that's ok, that's fine. It's really ok. *pushing my palms toward the floor in the "I'm-totally-freaking-out-but-I'm-trying-to-convince-myself-we're-fine" motion."*

Sac bunt fails: *dry heave*

Schumaker singles: "Holy crap. Come on now. COME. ON. NOW. Don't do this to me."

Woody facing Miles: "Please hit into a 4-6-3. Please hit into a 4-6-3. Please hit into a 4-6-3. No Albert please. No Albert please. No Albert...."

Strikes out Miles: "YES! (.01 seconds after). Oh, no."

2-2 count on Albert: "You gotta go with the slider in the dirt here Woody. Nothing good to hit. Nothing good to hit."

Pops him up: "AHHH!!!! WE ARE THE GREATEST TEAM EVER!!!!"

See, where would I be without that? Teh ups-and-downs of a a single Cubs game has more emotion than most teams' entire seasons.

Teixiera is gonna be a free agent, and depending on who our new owner is, they may want to make a big splash like this, it certainly wouldn't hurt to try

With how much it cost to eat up D-Lee's contract, and sign Teixiera. I'd much rather our new owner get C.C. Sabathia. I've heard he's not a clutch guy. Doesn't get big hits. He's a slower starter. Now I don't know if that's true, just what I've heard in the past. Guess the point is, is he REALLY that much of an improvement over D-Lee?

There's a few positions I worry about on this team, but 1st base is never one of them. He's durable, and great defensively. How many times has he saved Ramirez? He's not having a great year, but he'll probably wind up hitting around .295 with about 20-22 homers and 90ish RBI's. Not MVP numbers, but that's not bad either.

I noticed this last night as well. Cards are 10 back, Astros 8.5, and Brewers 5.5 back.

I personally do not want the Astros to make the playoffs because we DO NOT play them well and if they happened to win their divisional series and we would face them in the NLCS I would be very worried.

In the playoffs though, we're going to have the big runs pitching. If they are healthy, that should be scary for any team. Not this hurt Zambrano crap who gives up 7 runs a game.

CHICAGO -- Kerry Wood's 30th save was a historic one.

The Cubs closer notched his 30th save on Thursday night against the St. Louis Cardinals when he got Albert Pujols to pop up and preserve a 3-2 win. Wood is the ninth pitcher in club history to record a 30-save season, but the first to reach 30 without having previously recording a save opportunity in a prior campaign in his career.

Wood and Ryan Dempster are the only two pitchers in club history to each have a 30-start season and a 30-save season. Dempster had 33 saves in 2005 and has 30 starts in 2008. Wood had 33 starts in 2002, 32 starts in 2003 and 30 saves in 2008.

Wood is two strikeouts shy of becoming the third pitcher in franchise history to reach 1,400 strikeouts with the club.

Cubs starter Rich Harden, now 5-1 in 10 starts since joining the team on July 8, has given up 11 earned runs in 60 innings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Harden's 1.65 ERA is the third lowest by any pitcher over the first 10 starts for the Cubs. Earned runs have been officially compiled in the National League since 1912. The only pitchers with a lower mark than Harden were Hippo Vaughn (1.23 ERA, 1913-14) and Hank Wyse (1.61 ERA, 1942-43).

Apparently, rumors of Rich Harden's dire condition were slightly exaggerated. In his first start for the Cubs in 13 days, Harden spun a six-inning two-hitter against the Cardinals on Thursday. It was the sixth time in Harden's 10 starts as a Cub that he allowed either one or two hits. He leads the National League in starts like that -- even though he's been in the National League for only two months.

The only other Cub in the past 50 years with six starts that unhittable in a season: Kerry Wood in 2001.

Ok well the Brewers lost again. We're 6 up and the magic number is 10. Even if they won out we just need to go 10-6, and we win this division. I just hope the Phillies sweep the Brewers. That give us a chance to clinch at home, as long as we beat the Stros.

Miller Park could host Cubs-Astros set
PHILADELPHIA -- Suddenly it seems that a Cubs-Astros series under the dome at Miller Park is not so far-fetched.

Major League Baseball was considering moving the key series between National League Central contenders to Milwaukee on Sunday and Monday, according to two baseball sources. If the plan goes through, details, including game times and ticket procedures, would be announced Saturday.

Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed that the team is on stand-by, and is waiting for direction from MLB.
So we'd play at Miller Park on Sunday and Monday. Then leave Milwaukee to come play the Brewers at Wrigley on Tuesday.
