Yes! Yes! Yes!

We got him!

Now they know, we own the CC.

We beat the Brew for the first time since he had been with him, and now we hang his first loss on him!
And possibly the Brewers season with it.

He didn't get the loss that first time, he got a ND but we beat the Brew and that hadn't happened since they had him.
And today we actually gave him the loss.

Good news, Astros lost tonight. Had they won three straight, we couldn't have clinched. No one, even the media brought this up. I didn't because I didn't want to jynx it. The Astros elimination number is now down to 2. So obviously 2 Cubs wins (a.k.a. clinching) would seal the deal 100% now.

Contract extension for Piniella in works

The Cubs appear poised to offer manager Lou Piniella a contract extension at the end of the season. The team already has had preliminary talks with him, but the issue has been tabled until the offseason, Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said.

General manager Jim Hendry also might be in line for an extension.

''Lou's done a great job here,'' Kenney said. ''We look around the league, and there isn't anybody else I'd rather have in the dugout right now than Lou. And I think he feels good about what's happening.

''But it's a grind. Making decisions with two weeks to go, I don't think it's a smart thing to do, and I think they would agree with me. Let's get the job done, and then we'll address it.''

Piniella has one guaranteed year left on a three-year contract worth about $10 million, and the Cubs have an option for 2010. Hendry is signed through this season, with an option he can exercise for 2009. He also has a clause assuring another year in the event of the Tribune Co. sale of the team.
:multi :thumbsup Lou and Hendry can stay as long as they want, in my opinion.

'09 in motion

Kenney said the impending sale of the team might get done some time between the end of the World Series and the first of the year.

Kenney, Hendry and the rest of the Cubs' management team are going through management presentations with the five bidders, showing each group the team's plans for next season along the way.

''Right now, in any season, we would be already working on a budget for next year, so we are showing each one of the bidders what our projection is for payroll and sort of where we want to address some of our needs,'' Kenney said.
Crazy that they're already thinking about 2009. I wonder what they think our needs our *cough* Sabathia *cough*

No, I'm saying for wanting Adam Dunn. Mainly because he's a shitty fielder, and will either hit a HR or strike out. (Granted, he could hit HR's with a wiffle bat, but that's a different story.)

I dont think Adam Dunn is a better option that Fukudome. Dunn is at best an average outfielder. Even when Fukudome isnt playing good offensively he is a great defensive attribute to the Cubs. I'm sure they will figure something out, but Dunn is not the answer, not even close.

Fuk can stay and play right if he can hit at least .270 and drive in 60. He plays the best right field since the Hawk and is a walk-machine. He's helped the whole team with its discipline at the plate.

Keep in mind - he's a rookie. The long grind of an MLB season got to him. Next year he should be adapted a little more and should have more success.

I was referring to the talk of Fuk's role on the team beyond this year...

At this point...I am not concerned about Harden, Fuk, Dempster etc. for 2009...i'm just saying let's win the world series and then discuss this stuff...which i'm sure we all agree on.

Dempster is a free agent, we'll try to dump Marquis who doesn't make a ton, and Harden makes next to nothing. The new Cubs owner won't be in the poor house over Sabathia. But he will make us the NL favorite for the next 5+ years. If Harden can't stay healthy you still have two aces.

Maybe, maybe not.
But you're definitely right about tomorrow. With harden we've got as good a chance as any to win. And Bush is pretty awful and their bullpen will certainly be fucked after tonight.

Marquis is crap, he didn't get a 4.36 ERA by accident. Giving up 3 runs may not seem bad on paper, but in terms of how it effects the game is huge. Before our bats even had a chance to do ANYTHING the Brewers were on the board.

Now the Brewers offense feels relaxed, and knows they don't to do too much more with one of their aces on the mound. The pressure is off Sheets with a 3 run lead early. He can take chances on getting guys out. His mentality is totally changed. While Marquis knows another run or two, and he's out of the game.

If he was going to give up 3 runs I'd rather it be in the 6th then in the 1st.

Glance at '09

The Cubs get a taste of life on the South Side next year with an interleague schedule filled with American League Central opponents, including home series against Minnesota and Cleveland and a road series at Detroit.

The tentative 2009 schedule was released Wednesday, with the Cubs playing the White Sox in an unusual midweek series June 16-18 at Wrigley Field. They play a weekend series at U.S. Cellular Field on June 26-28.
The Cubs open on the road with a trip to Houston and Milwaukee before facing Colorado in the home opener April 13.

A 4.36 ERA from your #5 starter is damn good. Sorry but I don't know what you are talking about. Yeah he gave up 3 runs in the first and looked like shit. BUT, he kept the team in it. Guzman did just as badly in his second inning of work and at least Marquis has played in the post season--every year of his career. You need guys with a little experience when you are going up against tough teams. You dont' want to have someone like Guzman out there who's going to act like a deer caught in the headlights.

And I think it's funny how you blame Marquis for the Cubs' awful offensive production last night. Sorry, but that doesn't fly. It's not Marquis' fault that they were swinging at off-speed junk all night and couldn't come up with a 2-out hit (Cubs are last in the majors in 2-out hitting, fyi, can't blame that on Marquis).

I don't get your point. 3 runs is 3 runs. MLB games are long and the players have played in enough of them to realize that 3 runs is nothing. The offense just didn't have it. Marquis has given us a number of high quality starts lately and has been valuable. Not many other #5 starters have the stuff Marquis has. When he's in a bad stretch, yeah, it's bad. But when he's throwing the ball well, he's much better than a #5 starter.

Ok...I guess he's played on playoff teams every year. That's not really the point.

Look at Harden. He gave up a run in the first inning without giving up a hit. How do you think the defense likes seeing a guy throw 3 walks and not give them a chance to play ball behind him? Not to mention the strain he's going to put on the bullpen because he can't go more than 4-5 innings.

Now I'm just playing devil's advocate, but people undervalue players like Marquis way too much.

i have to say the MVP of this game who had aramis's double in the ninth go through his glove and legs... If he catches that which was a catchable ball then they win the game... Thank you silly Ryan Braun

I was talking to a Brewers fan last night, wearing a Braun jersey. And I said, yeah Braun's a heckuva a player. I love the way he hits. I'd love to have him on the Cubs if he didn't play such terrible defense. :lol

Apparently Eddie Vedder's song 'All the Way' has hit the Chicago air waves. I have no idea if it's live or studio, can anyone fill me in? PearlJam.com said it will be available for free in the next few days.

Here's a YouTube link to either what they're playing on the radio, or a more recent live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqHTScDBsDU it's got more verses then before, and all around it's just an awesome song.
