i really cant believe we did that all with two outs.... its fucking insane.... special tema we are wathcing
I was there yesterday and today. What I didn't get, since we faced the same situation twice. We were losing 6-2, and people didn't really start leaving till after the top of the 9th. Why would you leave after the Brewers at bat? To see if we were going to lose by more? If you weren't going to stay for the bottom of the 9th, wouldn't you leave after the bottom of the 8th?

Either way, just an amazing game today. Really sad we lost Wednesday because today would have been the coolest clinch game ever.

Apparently Eddie Vedder's song 'All the Way' has hit the Chicago air waves. I have no idea if it's live or studio, can anyone fill me in? PearlJam.com said it will be available for free in the next few days.

Here's a YouTube link to either what they're playing on the radio, or a more recent live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqHTScDBsDU it's got more verses then before, and all around it's just an awesome song.

from espn... "What does Manny Ramirez -- the fourth in the group -- have in common with them? The answer seems to be: Nothing. This is a guy who jogs after balls in the gap, who has brought his iPod to the outfield, who so frustrated the Boston Red Sox they put him on waivers. But he was faster to 500 homers and faster to 500 doubles than any of them."

the other three being referred to are Frank RObinson Willie Mays and Hank Aaron..

Which leads to the question which is more ridiculous? TIm Raines having cocaine in his pocket and blowing in Center Field or Mann listening to Lil Wayne while playing Left Field

As I watch Geo's homer over and over again, I started picturing that being one in Game 7 of the NLCS to tie us up in the bottom of the ninth. I can't even.... I can't comprehend what that would be like. To be dead and out of it - so close but again so far away and all of a sudden BAM!

I think 2003 really damaged me. It has kind of made me less emotionally involved, but I think part of that last year was the fact that I knew we didn't have the team to win it all. This year though... well, it could actually happen.

Phils no offense, I know you've got Santana, but we've made Cole Hamels look like Cy Young far too many times, and the prospect of having to face him twice in a five game series is not fun.

As I share your sentiment, oddly enough I had never thought about how he would react in that exact moment...

Just think about being in Wrigleyville as they record the final out to win the WS and they're pumping Santo/Hughes throughout the streets. WGN Radio's ratings would have to break records if that happened.

A 4.36 ERA from your #5 starter is damn good. Sorry but I don't know what you are talking about. Yeah he gave up 3 runs in the first and looked like shit. BUT, he kept the team in it. Guzman did just as badly in his second inning of work and at least Marquis has played in the post season--every year of his career.
Guzman or anyone will have a bad outing once in a while. Just like even good pitchers have bad outings. Marquis seems to always be bad, but instead of slumps he has good stretches.

I'm very happy Marquis has a 2.70 ERA in September. It's insane he's been able to do that. Also he's not played in the post season every year. You're right his team makes it every year, which is more lucky then anything. But he's SOOOOO good that he's only pitched THREE seasons (2001, 2004, and 2005) in the post season. He usually gets left off the roster.

You think he'll make it this year? If he did it will be in the pen. The guy has a 5.56 ERA at Wrigley. We'll probably have home field advantage. So if he does pitch we'd have to be careful with him. Even in July he was close to a 5 ERA when it was up to 4.96 on the season. He's worked it down a little bit, but good for him.

He more times then not brings the suck. Which fine, but not on a championship team. Not when we had guys like Marshall and Gaudin sitting around who were better starters.

You need guys with a little experience when you are going up against tough teams. You dont' want to have someone like Guzman out there who's going to act like a deer caught in the headlights.
Marquis has a 4.57 ERA in the post season. The scary thing is that he did that when he was good.

And I think it's funny how you blame Marquis for the Cubs' awful offensive production last night. Sorry, but that doesn't fly. It's not Marquis' fault that they were swinging at off-speed junk all night and couldn't come up with a 2-out hit (Cubs are last in the majors in 2-out hitting, fyi, can't blame that on Marquis).
I'm not saying it's all him. I'm just saying his constant sucking puts the offense in a hole. Guys are more patient when they're not losing. You give up a lead that early. They start thinking they have to swing away before Marquis gives up another 3.

Budweiser, the King of Beers, likes red, white and blue. It does not like "putrid brown."

That's how Anheuser-Busch describes the brown tarp that now covers one of the most famous Wrigley Field icons -- the huge Budweiser billboard covering the roof of a home just beyond the ballpark's left field wall.

The house sold in June for $8.35 million, and the home's new owner covered up the billboard Wednesday after voiding Bud's $347,287.50-a-year lease amid a contract feud with Anheuser-Busch. He then announced the space is for rent -- just in time for the playoffs and perhaps a historic, well-watched run at the World Series.

"It's available," owner Tom Gramatis said. "It's known as the Budweiser Building, but it's the Whoever-Wants-To-Go-Up-There Building."

"There should be a lot of interest. I would prefer maybe one of the corporate sponsors the Cubs have. I don't want to create any animosity with the Cubs, but at the same time, I have to make the best business decision."

"People will say, 'Wow. It's Viagra,' or whatever it is," he said.

Not so fast, says Anheuser-Busch.

The beer giant filed a lawsuit Thursday asking a judge to make Gramatis take down the "putrid brown colored, tarp-like material" that he "unceremoniously draped" over the ad, and reinstate the lease, which was to expire in February. The lawsuit, to be heard this afternoon, revealed the previously confidential lease terms.

The rooftop has been Budweiser's domain for decades -- except for a brief stretch when it advertised Sapporo Beer, much to the chagrin of Cub Fan-Bud Man Harry Caray.

But Anheuser-Busch was late on its quarterly payment earlier this month, Gramatis said. His lawyers sent a five-day notice and then terminated the lease after not getting paid within that time frame, he said.

Anheuser-Busch disputes that. In a statement, local marketing director Jeff Schmidt said Gramatis, after buying the building, was late in providing a rent statement and tax ID number. When he did, Anheuser-Busch sent an $86,821.87 quarterly payment -- only to have Gramatis return the check uncashed.

"We've been in full compliance with the lease agreement, and it remains in effect," Schmidt said.

Gramatis called Schmidt's account "total b-------" and said he's fielding offers for the space. Anheuser-Busch is welcome to re-up, he said, if they come back "with the appropriate number."

The rooftop will be leased to someone "either way" before the playoffs start next month, he said.

DMBZeppelin
09-19-2008, 08:22 AM
Whatever the sign winds up being. I just hope it's not Viagra like he suggest. I like the Budwesier rooftop, and hope it stays. When they first covered it up on Wednesday I was wondering what the deal was.

This guy is the same rooftop owner the Cubs had all those fights with. Where they put up that crappy screen to block his view. Because all the rooftop owners agreed to a deal, and he refused to accept it.

Shark would have been out of the inning if not for DeRosa. I agree if he keeps getting shelled take him out, but it's probably just a normal slump. His ERA is still in the 2's. There was a lot of peopel done with Marmol before the All-Star game. Sometimes people struggle for a bit, but as long as he gets his shit together before October. We know how good he can be.

At the request of Ernie Banks, Eddie threw together a song for the Cubs ("All the Way"). He got a pretty good live version of it at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago this August. It's now being played on Chicago radio and at the Bleacher Bars around Wrigleyville.
We have decided to make the song available for download. There's a chance we'll also make available some hard copy CDs and we're looking into souvenir 45 singles, as well.

Go, Cubs, go!

Well apparently Z's grandma passed away. He's been traveling back and forth to venezuela. He also had some joint irritation. That happened yesterday. Piniella says he'll think he'll be fine. He's going to start again in 5 days. Wasn't really an injury. My condolences to Zambrano and his family.

DMBZeppelin
09-19-2008, 06:50 PM
Zambrano said there's no excuse for how he pitched. Said he got back to Chicago last night. I can't understand him, but the joint thing might be in his left (long flights can do that to you). He looks pretty out of it and sad.

He also apologized to Lou for leaving the mound. He said it was stupid and he had too much on his mind. He also just said he was little tired today, but he felt good. They asked him if he thought about asking Lou to push him back. He said he thought about it.

Wait so what happened to Soto? Is he hurt?
He hurt his and on a swing during his at bat before the 9th. His hand was bothering him when he hit the 3 run homer. When he woke up today, it hurt a lot more and it was swollen. They're calling it joint irritation as x-rays said no structual damage.

So Soto not Zambrano had joint irritation, cause I posted Z did earlier. Misunderstood who Lou was taking about in the post game.

Great news!

Does Eddie Vedder's "All the Way" bring tears anyone else's eyes besides me?

I'd actually heard it a few months back, but now that they've released it I've actually listened to the lyrics and its great.
I watched on youtube, and while I was driving to the gym about half an hour later they actually played it on Q101.
It was sweet!

Listening to it right now and just thinking about the possibility of it happening this year does bring a little tear. Thinking back to all the afternoons as a kid living and dying with the Cubs on WGN...and all the summer trips my family took to Wrigley...and then being able to live 3 blocks from Wrigley for five years...and 2003. With everything I've (we've) gone through as a fan over the last 20+ years just hearing someone sing "someday we'll go all the way" makes you feel good.

Enough of this sappy shit.......Magic # is 1, let's go kick the shit out of the cards tomorrow and with this thing the right way!!!!

A-Ram's defense is so underrated. He was crap when we got him in 2003. He was known as a horrible 3B. He improved every single year. Until last year he was just great. Making plays like he just did. He had a higher fielding % in 07' then a lot of other 3B even David Wright. Ramirez hasn't been as good as last year, but still I love his defense.

Ok, well....I think now is the time to just keep playing like any other day. We shouldn't be resting too many guys for too long, although I think Dempster, Big Z, and Harden could use an extra day or two of rest. Get Marshall and someone else a start. But the everyday players, I think the team needs to stay in the same sort of groove, especially in the last few games before the playoffs. We need to use that Brewers series at the end of the season as a playoff warmup. The Crew will probably have something to play for, so that would be a good test.

I think Piniella said it best. We played a pretty tough September schedule. Lots of road games and all against mostly playoff teams. If this money didn't get us ready for the playoffs, nothing will.

Or not, I mean I love Dempster and all. But you send your ace out there for Game 1. That's without a doubt Zambrano. He's the guy. If you're worried like "Oh well what if this, what if that." if Zambrano is going to suck in Game 1, he would have sucked in Game 2. If he's healthy, no reason not to go with him.

Dempster has been consistent. So lets say you take a gamble with Z and Game 1. If we lose, big whoop they just used their ace. Now we have Dempster and Harden going against their 2 and 3.

DMBZeppelin

Thinking about the schedule, if we played every game. Check out what we could do.

NLDS
Game 1 - Wed., Oct. 1st - Zambrano
Game 2 - Thurs., Oct. 2 - Dempster
Game 3 - Sat., Oct. 4 - Harden
Game 4 - Sun., Oct. 5 - Zambrano *on short rest
Game 5 - Tues., Oct. 7 - Dempster

NLCS
Game 1 - Thurs., Oct. 9th - Harden
Game 2 - Fri., Oct. 10th - Zambrano
Game 3 - Sun., Oct. 12th - Dempster
Game 4 - Mon.m Oct. 13th - Lilly
Game 5 - Wed., Oct. 15th - Zambrano
Game 6 - Fri., Oct. 17th - Harden
Game 7 - Sat., Oct. 18th - Dempster

World Series
Game 1 - Wed., Oct. 22nd - Zambrano
Game 2 - Thurs., Oct. 23rd - Dempster
Game 3 - Sat., Oct. 25th - Harden
Game 4 - Sun., Oct. 26th - Lilly
Game 5 - Mon., Oct. 27th - Dempster *on short rest
Game 6 - Wed., Oct. 29th - Zambrano
Game 7 - Thurs., Oct. 30th - Harden

You bring Zambrano and Dempster back on short rest only once. You use Lilly only twice. You use Harden on normal rest only twice, allowing him plenty of extra rest the other starts. Meaning he can go deeper then usual, since he's a guy who needs extra rest.

I mean I have no idea what Lou would do, but I just really like the rotation on paper. Depending on how much you want to abuse Zambrano's shoulder. You could use Lilly just once.

Dempster isn't a true ace. Zambrano would suck Game 1 or Game 2. Wouldn't matter which game. We'll probably lose that game. So at least Dempster going later, gives him the better pitching matchup.

Edit: And the way I laid it out, Dempster would pitch the deciding Game 5.

CHICAGO -- Ryan Dempster won his 17th game, Felix Pie had two hits and scored two runs, and Casey McGehee had two RBIs to lead the Cubs to a 5-1 victory Sunday over the St. Louis Cardinals in the regular-season home finale.

4. 1B - Daryl Ward
5. 2B - Mike Fotenot
6. CF - Felix Pie
7. 3B - Casey McGehee
8. C - Koyie Hill

Just saw this on ESPN

The victory means the Cubs (94-60) need one more win to ensure home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

Chicago manager Lou Piniella said before the game he'll go back to his regulars when the Cubs go on a final road trip to New York and Milwaukee next week because they'll be playing teams still alive for the wild card.

"If we need to rest a player here or a player there, that we can do. I just can't play the lineup like we're playing today the rest of the week," Piniella said. "It just wouldn't be fair to the [contending] teams and it wouldn't be fair to us because we haven't clinched home-field advantage yet either."

DMBZeppelin
09-21-2008, 07:38 PM
From ESPN game notes:

Piniella said he wouldn't set his playoff rotation until the Cubs find out who they will be playing. ... Dempster threw 67 pitches. He finished the regular season 14-3 at Wrigley Field, the most home wins by a Cubs pitcher since Ferguson Jenkins set the club record with 15 in 1967.

Chicago reliever Chad Gaudin, who hadn't pitched since Aug. 29 because of a sore back and wasn't with the team for the clincher Saturday, worked the seventh inning.
----------------
Eh, and in case anyone cares. Gaudin didn't allow a run. He gave up two walks, but also had a strike out. He gave up no hits. Hopefully he regains his form.

Another who didn't allow a hit? Bob frickin' Howry. One strike out, and no walks. It looks like Shark worked a scoreless inning with 2 K's for himself as well. That's what we need. These middle relievers to get their act together.

Lou has said he'll play his starters in any game that is to determine playoff standings. We only play the Houston game if it's needed. If Houston needs it to try and get in, they'll play it. Otherwise we only play 161 this year.

There's something to say for sending a guy out there and not knowing what you're going to get. He could have his amazing, dominant stuff, or....he could get roughed up for a bunch of runs. The first game of the playoffs isn't just like any other game, anymore. If you get crushed in that first game, that could have a demoralizing affect on the rest of the team. Game 1 is very important in 5 game series. I don't risk Zambrano unless he shows something in his next start.

However, they'll almost certainly throw him out there. And we might get killed. Hope not.

I disagree. Zambrano on short rest in the first series? Pitch Lilly. He would be more useful than Z on short rest. Zambrano is TERRIBLE on short rest. He's just bad. Short rest is generally just not smart in the first place. Even Sabathia got roughed up the other day on short rest. And Zambrano is coming off an injury.

And why would you pitch Dempster on short rest instead of Zambrano on regular rest in the World Series? That doesn't make much sense to me. Especially because in game 6 and 7 I'd rather lean on my most consistent pitcher who I KNOW is going to give the team a chance to win.

I love Lilly, but if you can go Zambrano and Dempster instead of Lilly and Dempster. You can't tell me our chances aren't improved. How often have we seen Zambrano on short rest? Chances are he will pitch Game 4 though given recent history.

As for putting Dempster out there on short rest. I know he can pitch on it. He did for the All Star game. I know it wasn't a full start, but I don't think he gave up any runs. With Zambrano in the World Series. You're right he is coming off an injury. So instead of starting him the 27th on normal rest. I thought a well rested Zambrano and Harden would be a hard combo to beat in Games 6 and 7.

If Zambrano is going to suck, he's going to suck. Doesn't matter which game. This team has a lot of vets, I wouldn't be too worried about it having a carry over effect. Otherwise we'd have turned into the Mets and kept losing after the 8 of 9.

But fact remains, if we're going to win the World Series. Zambrano needs to be Zambrano. If he's getting shelled in the playoffs, we have bigger problems then if he's starting Game 1 or 2. So you have to pretend he will be and start him Game 1.

Not necessarily. An extra day of rest could work wonders for the guy. His stuff is very "touchy" it seems, and if he doesn't have the control or the extra oomph on his pitches, that can be the difference between giving up 6 runs in 2 innings or 1 run in 8 innings. I don't see the point of putting Z out there on short rest one start and extra-long rest the next. That's not the pattern he's been in all year. Ideally you'd like to stick as close as you can to that pattern and regularity, IMO.

I mean, I know Lilly gave up four runs in the 6th the other day, but the guy has had some excellent starts lately. At this point I don't really have too many worries about Ted. Since the beginning of August, he's had 7/10 quality starts, and he gave up 4 runs in two of those other three starts. He can keep us in the ballgame. He went head to head with Sabathia and kept us in the game.
